The Netherlands Due to the country’s geographic location, the Netherlands has become known as the ’Gateway to Europe’. The Dutch are famous for being a nation of traders who are open to change and progressive in their economic as well as political policies. The Dutch way of doing business internationally has been known for many centuries.

Your destination

Throughout the years the Netherlands has built up an outstanding academic record in many fields, such as economics, business, agriculture and engineering. It was the first non-Englishspeaking country in Europe to introduce higher education programmes taught entirely in English. This progressiveness is one of the reasons why the country has become a popular destination for international students. Approximately 50,000 international students are currently studying in one of the 1,485 international study programmes at Dutch higher education institutes. The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Using the latest technologies and making optimum use of the available means, the Netherlands is also one of the largest exporters of agricultural products in the world. In particular in the fields of dairy and meat production, floriculture, bulb growing, nursery stock and glasshouse horticulture, the Netherlands takes a large share of the world’s trade. This success in agricultural trade is not only the result of highly effective production methods, but also of sound management, marketing and logistics.

‘s-Hertogenbosch

5

‘s-Hertogenbosch ‘s-Hertogenbosch (or Den Bosch for short) is a lively city in the south of the Netherlands. It is the administrative centre of the province of NorthBrabant and the focal point of a region of rapid economic growth. Den Bosch has approximately 134,000 inhabitants and ranks among the Top 10 most attractive cities to live in the Netherlands. Den Bosch is well-connected to major cities in the Netherlands as well as the rest of Europe, such as Amsterdam (1 hour), The Hague (1.5 hours), Brussels in Belgium (2 hours) or Cologne in Germany (2.5 hours). Furthermore, it borders with important nature reserves such as the fens of the ‘Oisterwijkse Vennen’ and the largest sand plain in north-western Europe, the ‘Loonse en Drunense Duinen’. Being one of the oldest cities in the country, Den Bosch has many monuments. However, Den Bosch is also a city where old and new has met and in some way it represents two key aspects of Dutch culture: it is busy and sometimes hectic but at the same time pleasant, cosy and friendly. It has a lot to offer to you as an international student!

HAS Den Bosch, University of Applied Sciences In 2008 HAS Den Bosch celebrated its 60th anniversary. It was founded in 1948 as a specialised secondary school for dairy production, which later on fused with a specialised secondary school for horticulture. Since 1957 HAS Den Bosch officially holds the title of University of Applied Sciences. Fifty years later HAS Den Bosch is ranked as the best horticultural University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands and

6

holds a place in the Top 20 of all Universities of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. HAS Den Bosch is made up of three faculties, each specialised in a different field. Green Business School The Green Business School (GBS), is one of the three faculties at HAS Den Bosch. All of the English-taught programmes HAS Den Bosch offers are run by the GBS. Its study programmes have been designed in consultation with Dutch companies and are therefore sure to meet the demands of the industry. The GBS is a one-stop shop for high quality education in the green sector. It is an international marketplace for the exchange of knowledge and expertise. Dutch programmes: • Horticulture & Arable Farming • Urban & Rural Development • Landscape Design • Garden & Landscape Management • Geo Media & Design (starting 2012) English programmes: • Bachelor Horticulture & Business Management • Bachelor Floral Design & Business Management • 1-Year Certificate Floral Design Faculty of Biology, Animal & Environmental Studies The Faculty of Biology, Animal and Environmental Studies is the largest faculty of HAS Den Bosch in terms of student numbers. In all study programmes students are challenged to implement theoretical knowledge in practical work situations. For this reason the faculty cultivates and cherishes its excellent contacts with the industry.

Dutch programmes: • Applied Biology • Animal Husbandry & Animal Care • Environmental Studies Faculty of Food & Business The faculty of Food and Business offers three Dutch-taught Bachelor programmes which have recently attracted a lot of interest from international students who take it upon themselves to learn the Dutch language just to be able to enrol in one of the programmes. Like all faculties of HAS Den Bosch, Food & Business frequently cooperates with companies from its fields and consults them on the content of its study programmes. Dutch programmes: • Food Design & Innovation • Food Technology • Business Administration & Agribusiness

Horticulture & Business Management Bachelor of Applied Sciences The Netherlands is the second largest exporter of agrarian products in the world even though it covers no more than 0.008% of its surface. How can this be? The secret lies in the industry’s technological advancement, its efficiency and its innovativeness. The Netherlands is a source of knowledge in the fields of commercial plant breeding, cultivation techniques, technological innovations and product quality. Moreover, since about 80% of Dutch horticultural activities are export-oriented, also the field of logistics and marketing is a crucial and well-developed sector of the Dutch horticultural industry. Horticulture & Business Management lets you in on these secrets of the Dutch horticultural industry. Degree Horticulture & Business Management is a practically oriented 4-year programme at undergraduate level that prepares students for a career in the international horticultural industry. Successful completion of the course leads to an internationally recognised Bachelor of Applied Sciences. “There is so much I can learn about horticulture in the Netherlands that I cannot learn back home!” (Sejong, Korea) Content The programme covers all the sectors of horticulture and the entire horticultural chain from plant breeding to consumer marketing. Due to the business-oriented approach of the course, several elements of the curriculum are run in

cooperation with local and global horticultural companies. It also includes several study trips and guest lecturers as well as training sessions at a vocational training centre. Each course year consists of four terms of ten weeks during which two modules are covered. In order to emphasise the practical aspects of working in the horticultural sector, students participate in project work, practicals, skills trainings, workshops, three traineeships and a final-year thesis, written in cooperation with a Dutch horticultural company. Job Prospects Graduates of this programme can be expected 12

to advance to managing positions in production or export companies, or to work as consultants or researchers. Upon graduation you will also be able to set up your own company or become the successor of your family business. You will be a well-trained professional who is able to work in an international team and address projects in a systematic and practice-oriented manner. “HAS Den Bosch trains students to fulfil the requirements of a career in both a research and a business environment.” (Feng, China)

Tyrrel

‘Discovering new cultures is a real eye-opener for me’ Den Bosch. ‘HAS Den Bosch is nice and practical’ he says. ‘You do not only spend time with your books but you also go out and experience what you are learning about and I like that very much.’ He almost considers the staff at the International Office as relatives. ‘They help you with everything and you can always appeal to them.’

21-year-old Tyrrel Chisenga comes from the countryside in Zimbabwe. At home they grow maize and peppers. So it was a logical choice for him to study something in that field. ‘I wanted to go abroad to study Horticulture & Business Management. My sister and her husband have taken up permanent residence in the Netherlands. This was another reason to come here. Because of them I was offered this opportunity. I am very grateful to them.’ Tyrrel thinks he is learning quite a lot in the Netherlands. ‘I live in a student house with Dutch students and I really get to know the Dutch culture. Discovering new cultures is a real eye-opener for me.’ Tyrrel is quite satisfied with HAS

After his studies Tyrrel wants to have his own business in agriculture. At home in Zimbabwe. But for the time being he thoroughly enjoys his time in the Netherlands. The only downside? ‘ It’s a shame about the food. You do have a lot of deep-frozen products here!’

Horticulture & Business Management Traineeship in the Netherlands

Frans

“The traineeship is about patience, strong motivation and having a good time!” And what about working with Dutch colleagues for the first time? “My colleagues were nice and working with them was no problem. They were always highly focused during work… but there was also time for fun.”

Frans Hyso (20) is from Albania and came to Den Bosch to study Horticulture & Business Management. For the traineeship in his third year, Frans decided to stay in the Netherlands and get an insight into the famous Dutch horticultural industry. Frans did his traineeship with Van de Westelaken, a lily bulb and dairy farm close to Den Bosch. “I researched the methods of other lily growers all over the world and compared them with the Westelaken way of growing. In my report I also gave recommendations on how to stay informed about the latest developments in the lily growing industry.”

Personal growth For Frans this practical period has been more than just a professional learning experience. “The traineeship is about patience, strong motivation and having a good time. I am proud of what I have achieved and my time there brings back good memories.” In his final year Frans will specialise on the profile Research & Innovation. “I’m interested in the innovation of horticultural products and breeding and I want to improve my research skills. One day I want to work in an international consultancy firm that advises farmers in developing countries on growth parameters.”

Professional insights The traineeship exceeded his expectations. “I strongly recommend Van der Westelaken to other trainees. The atmosphere there was really good and the supervision was excellent, both from the company as well as the lecturer.”

Elle

"The traineeship is the best part of the whole programme!" Elle Janssen (22) from the Netherlands can’t deny that she was a little scared of getting homesick, but her traineeship at De Ruiter Seeds in Guatemala turned out to be fantastic. Elle studies Horticulture & Business Management and specialises on Research & Development. During her traineeship she did research on the right time to harvest melons and tomatoes. “I really enjoyed my traineeship. In fact, it is the best part of the whole programme”.

pany produces seeds for tomatoes, peppers and various kinds of melons. “It was really interesting, which is probably why I learned so much. I have definitely come one step closer to realising my dream”, says Elle. “I harvested melons and tomatoes on different days after they had been pollinated, sowed the seeds and evaluated how they developed. A cultural experience Elle is proud that she did a good job on her project. She also learned something about the Guatemalan culture. “I thought the people there are really friendly and relaxed. They seemed much happier that we are in the Netherlands.” Any tips for future trainees? Start looking for a suitable traineeship on time. And enjoy it to the fullest, just like I did.”

A job in which she can do research about the quality of vegetable seeds and the breeding thereof, preferably not behind a desk but out in the field (quite literally) – that is what Elle dreams of. Her traineeship was a perfect fit. De Ruiter Seeds is a (seed)breeding company specialising in vegetable seeds and rootstocks. In Guatemala the com-

Floral Design & Business Management Living in the Netherlands

Yi

‘My sister thinks I am quite brave’ It is her second year in the Netherlands. 22-year-old Yi Wu from China first studied tourism for a while in Breda. She did not like her studies, however, and consequently came to HAS Den Bosch. She now studies Floral Design & Business Management. ‘I like HAS Den Bosch very much. I like my field of study; I always wanted to do ‘something with flowers.’ Yi is fond of Den Bosch. ‘I think it is a wonderful city. And I have seen several cities since I came to stay here: Den Haag, Maastricht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Leeuwar-

den.’ At home in China she has a single sister. ‘She is not the type to go and study abroad’, Yi says. ‘My sister thinks I am quite brave.’ She sometimes misses China, but most of the time she is too busy for that. ‘I enjoy going to the pub or playing football with my fellow students. And I take dancing lessons.’ As a result she does not feel like going home for quite some time. She knows exactly what she wants. ‘I want to finish my studies first. And I would like to do a work placement in South-America and Africa!’

Floral Design & Business Management Traineeship in the Netherlands

San

“My bouquets were different but they sold well with the Dutch customer. ” San Deul Kim (22) knew for a long time already that she wanted to do something creative with flowers. That’s why she came to study Floral Design & Business Management. Her traineeship took place at an exclusive flower shop in Leiden. San was very pleased with her traineeship company. “The shop where I did my traineeship specialises on top-ofthe-line floral designs. They have several regular customers like a museum, a college and a hotel. But they also have a lot of individual clients, especially brides.”

San did feel the cultural differences from time to time. “It is difficult to feel at home in an industry if you can’t speak the language fluently. Towards the end it got a little easier to understand each other, though, and the cultural differences became interesting instead of frustrating.” A unique contribution What was the best thing about San’s traineeship? “The style of my hand-tied bouquets was just a little different from my Dutch colleagues but they got a lot of praise and sold well with the customers.” San has several ideas about what she would like to do later on. “My dream job is to be the manager of a floral design department in a big hotel. But I can also imagine being a floral design lecturer or to run an exclusive floral design shop, like the one where I just did my traineeship.”

Going Dutch She is especially grateful for the excellent supervision she received. “My boss was very charismatic and in the beginning I was a little intimidated. But after a while I realised how funny and flexible he was and I ended up learning a lot from him.”

proved his language skills considerably. “I also learned a lot about cultural differences between the Netherlands and Canada, which was a great experience.” This is but one of the things that went well. “Giving advice and changing and optimising the garden centre worked very well and the employees accepted the changes quite readily. It was also good to hear that customers thought the garden centre looked much nicer and that they returned to make more purchases. The garden centre is doing quite well with an 18% increase of turnover on last year!” Wesley is not the only one to look back with satisfaction on his traineeship. “The employees were very sad to see me leave. Some of them even wiped away a tear… I think it is fair to say that I considerably changed their way of thinking and that is something I am proud of.”

Wesley van den Berg (20) from the Netherlands studies Horticulture & Business Management and is interested in the garden centre industry, retail business and marketing. Therefore, he did his traineeship abroad at a garden centre in Vancouver, Canada. Wesley’s assignment was to write an advisory report, comparing Dutch and Canadian garden centres and describing the differences. “Many Canadian garden centres are ten to fifteen years behind Dutch garden centres. This was also the reason why it was a challenge to stir up things thoroughly.” A success in every respect The traineeship did not only improve his knowledge of garden centres. I promote Dutch flowers and plants that have been shipped to Finland by sea. This process involves several important companies, such as the Dutch Flower Group, the Flower Council, KP Holland and Wageningen University.”

Even when she was still a student, Tekla Wannas wanted to start her own company. Flowers are her passion. In 2009 the 26-year old from Finland graduated in Floral Design & Business Management. “HAS Den Bosch offers floral design at a very high level, and in combination with business management. You will not find this kind of combination anywhere else and the chance to learn about both subjects at the same time was too good to miss.”

Going international Tekla’s idea of the future? “I want to continue with my company and hopefully grow as an entrepreneur.” She plans to go back to Finland eventually but for now she wants to go international. “Every product as well as every market has its own character. It is, therefore, very important to promote the products in a culturally sensitive way. For that you need a lot of imagination and when it works, it really gives you a kick!”

Promoting Dutch products During her studies Tekla discovered her interest for the Russian market. “I now work as an advertisement photographer and writer for a magazine that promotes Dutch flowers on the Russian market. I design innovative, creative flower arrangements and preserve them in a photograph. The photos are then printed in the magazine, together with the article that I wrote. Funding EU students All students who are citizens of a European Union member state can request a student loan from the Dutch government. This loan is known as a “tuition fee loan” (in Dutch: collegegeldkrediet) and is paid out monthly. It covers no more than the national tuition fee which is set by the government every year (¤ 1672 for 2010). After you finish your studies you need to pay back the amount you borrowed. You can find the application form for this loan on the website of the IB Groep/DUO, the organisation which handles the loan request on behalf of the Dutch government (www.ib-groep.nl). Please note that the application procedure for the tuition fee loan can take several weeks. For EU students there are more funding possibilities, which are dependent on a number of conditions. For more information please check the website of the IB Groep/DUO. Non-EU students HAS Den Bosch gives a ¤ 1000 grant to each non-EU student enrolling in one of the undergraduate programmes. This grant has already been included in the tuition fees for non-EU students. HAS Den Bosch does not award any individual grants.
