Welcome

Welcome As Editor of Russian Art and Culture, I am pleased to present London’s inaugural Russian Art Week guide.

Russian Art Week is a bi-annual event which takes place in June and November. The major auction houses of Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Bonhams and MacDougalls all join together to present a series of Russian sales in London. Several Russian exhibitions and related cultural events also take place. We hope you enjoy our guide to this major event. We aim to provide you with a comprehensive listing of all sales, events and a directory of Russian auction houses, galleries, dealers and specialist institutions.

I would like to thank everyone involved for all their support and Evgeny Lebedev for sponsoring our new Russian Art & Culture Journal and postgraduate writing competition. Also we are grateful to historian Antony Beevor for presenting this year’s prize. Enjoy!

Theodora Clarke

Christie’s

Specialisation: 2011 saw the three highest prices for any paintings ever sold in a Russian sale by an international auction house established by Christie’s. In June 2011 Christie’s led the market with the sale of Ilya Repin’s magnificent painting A Parisian Café, which realised £4,521,250 ($7,396,123). The continuing strength of the Russian art market was confirmed by the most recent sales in May this year.
