Conference Report

Crossing Perspectives: Concepts and Methods in the Study of Nationalism The workshop “Crossing Perspectives: Concepts and Methods in the Study of Nationalism,” held in Edinburgh on 11 November 2011, was organised by the Ethnicity, Nationalism and National Identity Network (ENNIN) of the University of Edinburgh.

The keynote speech was delivered by Dr John Hutchinson from the LSE, who outlined the main historical developments in nationalism theory and the implications for future study.

First, he reviewed approaches and theories by scholars such as Anthony Smith, Elie Kedourie, John Breuilly, Walker Connor, Charles Tilly and Michael Mann. Later, he pointed to the persistence of national identity in contemporary states and referred to scholars including Michael Billig and Rogers Brubaker. Another contemporary issue he addressed was the debate concerning multiculturalism and religious communities, and the persisting importance of religious beliefs in many parts of the world.

When delivering his key message to the audience, Dr Hutchinson recounted a conversation he once had at the LSE with Ernest Gellner. When he asked the latter which methodology he should apply in his research, Gellner replied promptly: “What’s your problem?” Dr Hutchinson’s point was that in the field of nationalism one’s methodology can vary between a number of methods that are used in the social sciences, always dependent on one’s specific research question.

The panel discussions highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of current nationalism studies. Participants expanded on their own distinct approaches, from a variety of disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, psychology, political science and oriental studies. Hence, exchanges and discussions of concepts and approaches from different social sciences stimulated the debates and shed some light on different perspectives.

In his closing speech, “The Puny Child of Muscular Parents, or National Identity the Weakest Link,” Professor David McCrone elaborated on the gap in contemporary research concerning the understanding of “national identity.” Following his argument, most of the literature addresses issues such as citizenship, historical, cultural and philosophical accounts on how “nations” were invented. He sees such questions as partially misleading and argues for the necessity to study “national identity.”

For Professor McCrone, social identities are the “hinge” between social structure and social agency. Therefore, national identity should be one of the primary targets in the study of nationalism.

Nations and Nationalism Announcements Ernest Gellner Nationalism Lecture To 18th annual Ernest Gellner Nationalism Lecture be given by Rogers Brubaker on “Language, Religion, and the Politics of Difference.” The lecture will take place in the Hong Kong Theatre at the LSE on 26 March 2012 at 17:30 and will be chaired by Jon Fox. Rogers Brubaker is Professor of Sociology and UCLA Foundation Chair at the University of California, Los Angeles. His works include Citizenship and Nationhood in France and Germany (1992), Nationalism Reframed: Nationhood and the National Question in the New Europe (1996), Nationalist Politics and Everyday Ethnicity in a Transylvanian Town (2006) and Ethnicity Without Groups (2004).

Nations and Nationalism Debate Series The next debate, on Joep Leerssen’s book, National Thought in Europe: A Cultural History, will take place in Room U8 at the LSE on Wednesday 2 May 2012 (time to be confirmed). Jonathan Hearn and Oliver Zimmer have agreed to participate alongside the author.

Joep Leerssen is Professor of Modern European Literature at the University of Amsterdam. He won the Spinoza Prize in 2008. His previous books published in English include Remembrance and Imagination: Patterns in the Historical and Literary Representation of Ireland in the Nineteenth Century (1996) and Imagology: The Cultural Construction and Literary Representation of National Characters (2007).

Snouck Hurgronje, ‘de grootste islamoloog aller tijden’ Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje, geboren in Oosterhout, 1857, studeerde in Leiden theologie en semitische talen. Hij promoveerde op zijn 23e op een studie naar de hadj, de jaarlijkse pelgrimstocht naar Mekka. In 1884 ging hij als onderzoeker naar de heilige stad, met foto-apparatuur en 1500 gulden van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde.

Hij publiceerde vervolgens Mekka , Bilder-Atlas zu Mekka en Bilder aus Mekka.

De Thawr-grot, schuilplaats van de profeet Mohammed. Onderop staat gekalligrafeerd ‘foto gemaakt door de Sayyid ‘Abd al-Ghaffar, dokter in Mekka’ in 1888.

Snouck Hurgronje gebruikte tussen 1890 en 1906 zijn kennis van de islam om als adviseur van de koloniale regering van Nederlands-Indië de opstanden op Atjeh te helpen bedwingen. Zijn ideaal van een verlicht koloniaal bestuur werd niet uitgevoerd. Daarna was hij hoogleraar Arabisch in Leiden. Bij zijn dood in 1936 werd hij geprezen als „de grootste islamoloog aller tijden”.

Schrijver en Indië-kenner Rudy Kousbroek (1929-2010) is altijd lovend geweest over Snouck Hurgronje. Hij citeerde in Een ereschuld de islamoloog die al in 1923 op wantoestanden in Nederlands-Indië wees. „Snouck Hurgronje hanteert de maatstaven als die ook nu nog gelden.”

De Nederlandse arabist Snouck Hurgronje was een van de weinige westerlingen die doordrongen tot het 19de eeuwse Mekka. Hij maakte er de eerste foto’s. Met een verborgen camera legde hij zelfs de Ka’aba vast, de heiligste plek van de grote moskee.

ij bekeerde zich tot de islam, nam een Arabische naam aan en liet zich besnijden. Allemaal om maar in Mekka te komen – de heilige stad en streng verboden voor niet-moslims. Tussen 1503 en 1884 waren er maar vijftien westerlingen in geslaagd Mekka binnen te komen.

De Nederlandse arabist en islamoloog Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje was de eerste Nederlander die in Mekka kwam. Bovendien was hij de eerste westerling die er in 1885 foto’s maakte. Binnen een paar maanden werd hij de stad weer uit gezet. Maar zijn fotoboeken, die in 1888 en 1889 verschenen, maakten hem op slag wereldberoemd.

Het fotograferen was niet gemakkelijk geweest, want afbeeldingen maken was onofficieel verboden en veel mensen stonden argwanend tegenover fotografie. Maar dat hij überhaupt foto’s had kunnen maken in de heilige stad, overtrof Snouck Hurgronjes verwachtingen. Het lukte, zolang het niet op straat gebeurde maar in een studio. En het bleek gemakkelijker de elite te fotograferen dan mensen uit de lagere sociale klasse.

Niet al zijn foto’s werden destijds gepubliceerd, blijkt uit de studie van historica Durkje van der Wal (1974) die vorige week verscheen.

Verschillende foto’s, vooral die uit de collectie van de Universiteitsbibliotheek Leiden, waren

tot nu toe onbekend. Zoals de bijzondere beelden, gemaakt met een kleine camera waarvan de lens paste in een knoopsgat. Daarmee maakte Snouck Hurgronje een zesdelige geheime opname van de Ka’aba: het kubusvormige gebouw in de grote moskee, het centrale heiligdom van de islam. „Het is de eerste foto van de Ka’aba genomen vanuit de Grote Moskee van Mekka, de Al-Masjid al-Haram”, zegt Van der Wal. „Er waren toen alleen enkele foto’s genomen vanaf een hoger gelegen standpunt in de stad.” De camera fotografeerde volgens de ‘revolvermethode’: een glasplaatje dat doordraaide zodat zonder wissel zes opnamen achter elkaar gemaakt konden worden.

nouck Hurgronje gebruikte de geheime camera omdat hij nooit kon inschatten of hij mocht fotograferen in de heilige stad.

Er bestond ook veel weerstand tegen het fotograferen, zegt Van der Wal. Een vriend in de havenstad Jeddah, waar hij eerst verbleef, waarschuwde: „Als ik je advies mag geven, breng de foto-apparatuur eerst hier en verscheep het in kratten zodat niemand weet wat het is.” Niet alle foto’s die eind negentiende eeuw in die wereldberoemde boeken werden afgedrukt, maakte Snouck Hurgronje zelf. Een dokter uit Mekka, ‘Abd al-Ghaffar, hielp hem toen Snouck Hurgronje nog in Mekka woonde.

Een lokale arts was tenslotte minder verdacht als fotograaf dan een westerse moslim. ‘Abd alGhaffar ging bovendien door met fotograferen toen Snouck Hurgronje het land had moeten verlaten, met achterlating van zijn dure apparatuur. De arts stuurde in totaal 250 foto’s naar Nederland.

De prachtige afbeelding van een bruid met versierd hoofddeksel, ketting en enkelbanden, is van ‘Abd al-Ghaffar. Het is goed mogelijk, vertelt Van der Wal, dat de vrouw helemaal geen bruid is. Dat ze alleen maar poseerde, op verzoek van ‘Abd alGhaffar, die op zijn beurt aan een verzoek van Snouck Hurgronjes voldeed. Ook de foto van een tentenkamp in de vlakte van Arafat, dat in augustus 1888 was opgeslagen voor de jaarlijkse pelgrimstocht, is van ‘Abd al Ghaffar. En de vele groepsportretten van inwoners van Mekka, met baby’s, bloemen en boeken – de dokter verdiende aan het portretteren van welgestelde stadsgenoten.

Dat waren trouwens niet de foto’s waar Snouck Hurgronje op zat te wachten, hij hield meer van antropologische beelden.

Snouck Hurgronje heeft niet opzettelijk de naam van de andere fotograaf verborgen gehouden, zegt Van der Wal. „Hij zag het beeld als illustratief studiemateriaal, zoals een wetenschappelijke kaart of tekening. Niet als een autonoom kunstwerk.” Van sommige foto’s,

waaronder die gemaakt met de verborgen camera, is niet zeker of ze nou van Snouck Hurgronje zijn of van ‘Abd al-Ghaffar. Om het ingewikkeld te maken was ‘Abd al Ghaffar, letterlijk ‘Dienaar van de Allesvergevende’, ook de Arabische naam van Snouck Hurgronje. „Puur toeval”, meent Van der Wal. „Het was en is nog steeds een veelvoorkomende naam.”

ok ‘Abd al Ghaffars foto van de Thawrgrot, waar de profeet Mohammed zich drie nachten zou hebben verscholen, is volgens Van der Wal uniek. Aan de Arabische letters bovenaan de foto (de plaatsnaam) en onderop (zijn signatuur in gekalligrafeerd Arabisch schrift) weet ze in dit geval zeker wie de maker is. Op de foto poseert een man alsof hij onder de rots uit klimt. „Zo worden daar nu nog steeds foto’s gemaakt”, grinnikt Van der Wal. „Kijk maar op YouTube. Dit is de oudste foto van die plek. Ik hoop dat ik de Arabische wereld een plezier doe met het ‘teruggeven’ van dit gemeenschappelijk cultureel erfgoed.”
