Running Zone Foundation decided that we would try something different. Instead of having one main beneficiary we are donating the funds raised to many beneficiaries. We decided to make the beneficiary of the Space Coast Marathon & Half Marathon each individual organization that hosts each of the 13 water stations along the course. It is a great way to fundraise for an organization as it only requires a day or two of work for most of the volunteers. This month we will announce 13 beneficiaries for Space Coast Marathon and Half Marathon. We have been accepting applications from various not for profit local organizations that are interested in hosting a water station! The goal is to make the event very fun for all of the participants. The water stations have an enormous impact of the enjoyment of all participants.

ORGANIZATION, ENTHUSIASM & CHEERING ARE WHAT MAKE A GREAT WATER STATION! 1 - MUST HAVE AT LEAST 20 VOLUNTEERS 2 - MUST STAY FOR REQUIRED TIME AT STATION

3 - MUST HAVE A TEAM CAPTAIN IN CHARGE OF WATER STATION. THE CAPTAIN MUST ATTEND ALL TRAINING TO COORDINATE THE REST OF THE TEAM 4 - MUST WEAR COSTUMES EITHER PROVIDED OR YOUR OWN

5 - MUST RETURN ALL COSTUMES BEFORE 12/31/2013 If you are interested in being considered to host a water station, please contact us at info@spacecoastmarathon.com by August 15th. Thanks,

We still have a few possible hosting opportunities. Here are the qualifications:

Runners mass at the starting line of the July 4 Firecracker 5K which kicked off the 2013-14 Running Zone Race Series in Melbourne.

The 2013-2014 Running Zone Race Series got off to a hot start – literally and figuratively - on July 4 as 1,044 runners and walkers shrugged off the summertime heat to measure themselves over the 5K course. Peter Clusener, 36, of Melbourne won the race in 16 minutes flat while the overall women’s title went to West Melbourne’s Kaitlin Donner, 23, in 16:57. Viera’s Shane Streufert, 41, won the Male Masters laurels in 17:26 while the Female Masters honors went to Satellite Beach’s Cathy Friedel, 49, in 20:44. The race was run in downtown Melbourne, beginning and ending at the Liberty Bell Memorial Museum. Team honors went to Team Running Zone – Clusener, Joey Castagnaro, Donner, Ron Abel and Steve Chin – with a total time of 1:24:41 to 1:29:11 for Long Doggers Club of Jessica Crate, Dillon Mcgee, Shane Streufert, Angela Cobb and Nathan Wick. Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy graduate and Florida State University rising sophomore Castagnaro, 19, of Melbourne, was second to Clusener overall in 16:08. Viera’s Crate, 27, was second to Donner in 18:01. The race marked the start of Clusener’s season as well and he was pleased with the result. “I was shooting for sub-16 but who knows, it’s the beginning of the season,” said Clusener, an entrepreneur. “I just want to keep running strong and

get some speed in if the universe allows me.” Clusener plans to concentrate on the seven-race series but said he wouldn’t be opposed to taking on additional challenges if he felt up to it. As for Donner, the Firecracker was just another step in her training as a professional triathlete with the ultimate goal of making the U.S. Olympic team for the 2016 Summer Games in Brazil. “I’m very happy,” Donner said of her result. “It’s the first time I’ve been under 17. I am so thrilled with the warmer conditions (to be able) to get under there. “I just got back from Canada two weeks ago racing the World Cup there and then I head to Germany in about 2 ½ weeks for another sprint race there so this is really fine-tuning my run to get to the World Triathlon Series race in Germany and have a good kick at the end.” Donner finished fifth overall in Canada. “It was my third World Cup and second one in the top five,” she said. “I was the first American so I’m thrilled with that.” Donner wasn’t the only person wearing a wide smile. Race director and Running Zone co-owner Denise Piercy was overjoyed with the turnout of runners – 988 competed in 2012 - believing the high level of participation bodes well for the remaining series races. “We really expected Firecracker to be down this year due to the fact that it was on

15 Running Zone The Starting Line

Consistency, discipline help drive Kaitlin to the Olympics By Mark DeCotis

Triathlon – a sport of swimming, biking

and running – also is a sport of focus, balance and consistency when it comes to competing at the international level.

A triathlete must perfect all three legs through a process that West Melbourne’s Kaitlin Donner knows quite well as she continues her preparations for and her drive toward a berth on the 2016 U.S. Olympic team. “Luckily I have a great coach who really targets that (one leg at a time) and I switch my brain off with what workout I do on what day,” said Donner after winning the overall women’s title in the July 4 Firecracker 5K that kicked off the 2013-2014 Running Zone Race Series. “It’s on our training plan, it’s in our system. It’s all there for me with the details. As far as over time, it’s just consistency. It’s the only thing that’s been proven about you will get better, is to be consistent. “Whether you go out for a 30-minute run, whether it’s a 15-minute run, an hour run. It’s consistency.” To that end Donner, 23, used the Firecracker to get under 17 minutes – she finished in 16:57 – as a means to an end. “I just wanted to come out and have a good day,” she said. Donner’s main competitive races are

Olympic distance – a 1.5- kilometer swim (0.93 miles), 40-kilometer bike (24.8 miles) and 10-kilometer run (6.2 miles). So the Firecracker represented half the distance and was another brick in the foundation she is putting down. That’s vital since the 10K run on the final leg presents formidable challenges that Donner estimates kick in at the 5K distance. “It’s about half to three-quarters through,” she said. “It’s what I found in all the races I do. Whether it was the mile on the track, it’s that third lap, that third quarter of the race. It’s the same with the 10K. “In those races I need to set myself up to be around people at that point to kind of use them to get me through. Just like (in the Firecracker) there were a couple guys in front of me. I needed to just hang on their shoulder and use them as much as I could so you are not out there by yourself. “Just mentally thinking about them and kind of not thinking about how I am feel in the West Melbourne’s Kaitlin Donner en route race. When you get to that point you have to to her overall women’s victory in the July 4 turn your head off because everybody’s hurtFirecracker 5K. ing. It’s just who can sustain it the longest.” And many times it comes down to who trained the smartest. “This year is just another building But until then another factor in the drive block to get me there (Olympics).” to the Olympics comes into play: discipline. “I have to just always remember that we – Kaitlin Donner still have three years,” she said, “So much can happen in three years. People could come into the sport, out of the sport. Injuries can happen. Donner was 14th overall and the second American in her most recent race, the July 20 “Gwen Jorgensen, I was with her at the sprint race in Hamburg, Germany. OTC training a year or two out of the (2012) Olympics. She is winning huge races now. “I’m happy,” Donner said from Hamburg. There’s so much that can happen. We have to “It's my best World Triathlon Series finish to remember that.” date against some of the best women in the To that end Donner’s training plan for sport. My goal going into the race was top 15.” 2016 is four years in duration. Iconic Space Coast Marathon grows, evolves By Mark DeCotis

august events August 1st

NB Demo Run – Thursday Night Fun Run – 6:00pm

August 15th

Todd Williams Run Safer Clinic – 6:30pm

Runners start the Space Coast Marathon & Half Marathon in 2012.

A sport of motion cannot afford to stand still and that certainly is the case with the Space Coast Marathon and Half-Marathon, the 42nd running of which will be held Sunday, Dec. 1 beginning and ending in Cocoa Village. In an attempt to ensure the iconic race it is the oldest marathon in Florida - continues to both accommodate more runners and run smoothly, race organizers have decided to split the starting times. The half-marathon (13.1 miles) will start at 6 a.m. and the marathon at 6:30. The race has been capped at 5,000 participants, 3000 for the half and 2000 for the full marathon. The half marathon filled to capacity on July 18th quickly followed by the full marathon capping on July 24th. "Race directors have evaluated the course and decided that to improve the race experience for all runners, the start time will be split," said Denise Piercy co-owner of Running Zone who shares race director duties with her husband and business partner Don Piercy. "We did not make this decision lightly. Every decision we make about our event is to try and improve the experience for all participants. If there was any way to have started the full marathon first, we would have made it.

The decision to stagger start times was made to alleviate congestion on the southern end of the course - which comprises the halfmarathon - and at the finish line in Riverfront Park. "We did an extensive analysis of the course and past finishing times to see if we could improve on the course flow for both marathoners and half marathoners," Denise Piercy said. "By making the change in the new start times allows more than 60 percent of the half marathoners to be finished before the majority of the marathoners start on the half marathon course which is the second half of the marathon course. This will reduce the congestion for all participants and allow both races to flow much better. " Interest in the full and half-marathon has been increased with the introduction of The Big Bang Series which will award space shuttle-themed finisher medals and Mega Milestone Medals in two categories: Milky Way Challenge Finisher Medal to runners who complete any combination of three races in five years or Intergalactic Challenge Finisher Medal to runners who complete any combination of five races in five years.

Selecting a Running Shoe By Richard C. Wilson, DPM, Melbourne Podiatry Associates

The selection of a proper running shoe is not as simple as it may seem. This is especially true considering the large numbers of shoes available, all offering special features. The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine describes four factors to consider when selecting a running shoe. These are: past experience with shoes; current problems; biomechanical needs; and environmental factors. Regarding past experience with a particular shoe model, my advice is simple: if you have found a shoe model that works for you, continue using it. I recommend purchasing several pairs. This is because running shoe companies are notorious for changing and discontinuing shoe models after relatively short time periods, so you might find that your favorite model no longer exists when you go shopping for your next pair. Current foot problems necessitating a shoe model change include size and fit issues, blisters, or development of a condition that could be improved or prevented with a different shoe. Biomechanical needs refers to the function of the foot as related to its shape, such as a pronated or supinated foot (to be discussed further). Environmental factors refer to running surfaces, and the decision by the runner regarding desired amount of shock absorption. The biomechanical evaluation of a runner is important in shoe selection. Traditionally, runners have been classified by foot shape, of which there are three: pronated (flat); supinated (high arch); and neutral (or normal). This is an oversimplification, but it is accurate in perhaps the majority of runners. It should be noted, however, that foot shape alone does not determine the biomechanics of the lower extremity. Compensation to alter gait in the presence of a foot imbalance is common, and it cannot be assessed with foot shape tests. Despite this, the foot shape tests are a good place to start and will be useful in most runners. The simplest way to determine foot shape is to perform what “Runner’s World” magazine calls the wet foot test. To do this, step on the floor or preferably a piece of paper with the foot wet. Observation of the resulting footprint will tell you your foot shape. The normal has a normal-sized arch and has the

heel and forefoot connected by a wide band. The pronated foot has a low arch and leaves a print that looks like the entire sole of the foot. This type of foot rolls inward excessively. The supinated foot leaves a footprint with a very narrow or no band between the forefoot and the heel. This foot supinates or rolls in to the outside. As each foot type performs better in a different type of shoe, it is important to understand the various categories of shoes. “Runner’s World” classifies running shoes into six categories. These are cushioned shoes, motion control shoes, stability shoes, minimalist shoes, off-road shoes, and racing (performance shoes). Cushioned shoes are recommended for runners who supinate and for those who need maximum midsole cushioning. They offer minimal medial support, and are not recommended for the pronated foot. They are the shoe of choice for lighter runners. Motion control shoes are recommended for moderate to severe pronators. They are rigid and are generally heavy, but provide the maximum rearfoot control and medial support. They are durable and are the shoe of choice for heavy runners. Stability shoes are the preferred shoes for the normal foot and for mild pronation. These shoes provide good medial support and midsole cushioning. They are the commonly used type of running shoe. Minimalist shoes offer no cushioning and have been discussed in a previous article. Racing shoes are lightweight and fit snugly, and are generally used

for racing, but can be used for training by runners with normal foot structure. Off-road shoes are designed for rough terrain and have more traction on the sole and a more durable upper. When shopping for a new shoe, select a good store with knowledgeable staff. Go shopping at the end of the day, when the feet are their largest. Wear the same type of sock that you normally use when you run. Make sure that the length of the shoe is adequate. There should be a thumb width between the tip of the shoe and the tip of the longest toe. Try the shoes on and run in them. Wear them for at least 10 minutes. If they feel good, buy them. Even though shoes do not need to be “broken in” they should only be worn for short distances for the first 100 miles. This allows your feet to get used to them. Proper shoe selection takes some time and effort, but the results in comfort, performance, and injury prevention are well worth it. Dr. Wilson, a Melbourne native and Florida Gator, earned his doctorate degree from the Illinois College of podiatric Medicine in Chicago. After completing a surgical residence in Chicago, Dr. Wilson returned to Melbourne where he has been practicing with Melbourne Podiatry Associates for 30 years. The good doctor is passionate about his profession; running – a sport in which he has reveled for more than 45 years – and writing, particularly about all things running and foot related.

First or Fastest Camp teaches process to success by Mark DeCotis

Veteran runners and coaches Barry Birdwell, Bernie Sher and Rick Foresteire are holding a Space Coast Half-Marathon training camp in conjunction with Running Zone and Health First Health Plans beginning on Sunday, Aug. 18. The 42nd edition of the marathon and half-marathon will be run beginning at 6 a.m. Dec. 1 in Cocoa Village. The cost for the First or Fastest camp is $125 or $95 for Health First Health Plans members. Registration is still open at www. runningzone.com or www.spacecoastmarathon.com/training Birdwell, who is the lead coach, took time to answer questions about his experiences, the camp, its methods and its goals. Question: How many full marathons have you run? How many half-marathons? What was most recent for each? Birdwell: I just counted from memory 12

full marathons, some of my favorites are Alaska four times, Maui, San Diego three times, Donna 26.2, Vancouver and Big Sur. (Wife) Michele (Birdwell) and I like to travel.

Half-marathons, I will guess about 20 maybe more. Our most recent was the Nike half in Washington D.C. in April and the Vancouver full last May. Question: How many camps have you held

with Bernie and Rick?

Birdwell: This will be the third camp that I worked with Coach Bernie and Coach Rick. It’s a great collaboration. Question: How many camps have you held for Team in Training, an organization close to your heart?

Birdwell: Michele and I work pretty much year round with Team In Training. We coached our first season back in 2003, since then we have coached 21 camps. Team In Training is a passion for us. I hope it leads to a world without cancer and soon. Question: Based on your experiences what is the No. 1 lesson you try to impart to your campers?

Birdwell: Getting to the marathon start line is not a destination it is a process. I want campers to learn to love the sport and respect the distance. In marathoning, whether it is the full or half distance, the training needs to be well thought out and planned. A proper plan is based upon each persons inherit ability and current level of fitness, not a time goal. I hope they learn no matter if it is their first or if they have done many, it takes a respect for the distance and dedication to an appropriate plan for them to succeed and do their best. Question: What is the No. 1 misconception runners new to the distance have about running half or full marathons?

Birdwell:: If I run more I'll get stronger and faster is probably the most common misconception. Training is a cyclical series of stressing the body and letting it rest. It is while at rest the body rebuilds itself from the stress of training. While at rest period you get stronger and ready for the next challenge. Question: What is the No. 1 bad habit of the new or even experienced campers that you have to break?

Birdwell: I think relying on personal technology while on the course is problematic. Things like a music player are not the best

way to focus or a GPS device, which provides a runners pace information can become a crutch. In some ways technology can be very useful during training sessions, but the habit of using these devices can be devastating when they fail on race day, which happens all the time. When it comes to race day I say leave them at home. Go with what the day gives you and get in the best habit a runner can have and that is to listen to your body. Question: How has training evolved over all your years and how will this camp be different or what might you change from previous years?

Birdwell: Social media and the sheer volume of options online have exploded. This enables us as coaches to reach out and be reached more efficiently. It also allows us to research and learn from other coaches regarding the most up to date science. This season Coach Bernie, Coach Rick and I look forward to mixing it up a bit more, maybe a few more causeway runs to build strength, and additional direction regarding cross training. Running takes more than your legs, you are only as good as your weakest link. We will work on bringing a balance to the entire package and make sure whether the camper is out for their first or fastest our process will lead them to start line and a strong finish. Question: Is camp still accepting campers? Is there a registration deadline?

Birdwell: Runners can register online and at the Running Zone through August.

Todd Williams' Run Safer Program coming to Running Zone on August 15th by Mark DeCotis

Todd Williams, a two-time U.S. Olympic track athlete and holder of a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is bringing his Run Safer program to the Running Zone at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 15. The one-hour seminar with Williams, who established himself as one of the United States best-ever distance runners in the 1990s, costs $20 cash or check made out to Run Safer LLC. Participants must pre-register by emailing pete@runningzone.com. The seminar is limited to 30 participants. Williams created Run Safer to help all runners and athletes not only become faster and stronger but safer when they're in an environment that may warrant self defense training, according to his website www.runsafer.com “Time after time we read headlines about how individuals are assaulted or attacked while out on their run or going to or coming back from the gym,” Williams said on his website. “Run Safer is here not to turn you into a pro fighter but to give you some self defense tools to pos-

sibly save you if a situation ever occurs.” As more women than ever take up running - about 7.6 million females finished U.S. road races in 2011 – awareness of surroundings when on training runs and at times self-defense become even more vital. As the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported in March, Running USA numbers show women now account for the majority of entrants (59 percent) in the 13.1-mile half-marathon, a distance that can require 30 or more miles a week at the height of training. Because so many work, many of those miles are logged when women are alone, in isolated areas, at off hours. Yet it was an attempted assault of a woman runner in daylight hours on a trail in nearby Wickham Park that prompted Williams to contact Running Zone about holding a seminar, co-owner Denise Piercy said.
