acknowledgement

Dear Partners and Friends, This year, 2019, will be a historic one for us. We’ll be celebrating the 25th running of the Volkswagen Prague Marathon. And the birth of an organization that would eventually become RunCzech. What has been most gratifying about our growth is watching how we all seemed to grow together. Just as importantly, the towns in which we stage our races have all benefited economically, and through exposure to travelers around the globe. Sometimes thrilling crowds with world recordsetting performances. And last but not least, our partners and other supporters have all profited. We have delivered more than a million runners, and exposed our patrons’ products and services to many millions more spectators. And all of them – Volkswagen, adidas, Mattoni, Hilton Prague and all the others – are beloved for their involvement in helping us put together events that are a source of so much happiness for so many. Make no mistake. Staging the races and helping to make the world a little healthier, happier place gives us tremendous joy. But being able to link arms with our host cities and our partners, and rise together? After 25 years, that’s what make our organization run. Carlo Capalbo President of the RunCzech Organizing Committee

all runners are beautiful

4

our assets

“All Runners Are Beautiful” is our way of welcoming everyone —and we do mean everyone— to the wonderful world of running. To a world of fitness and fun and friendship. This is an homage to everyone who cares enough about themselves to lace up a pair of running shoes and commit to making themselves a little bit better. That’s what victory is, in our minds. Not winning, necessarily. But doing. And enjoying. “All Runners Are Beautiful” is also a testament to how we feel about running. About the sport itself. It is pure. It is life-restoring. It can be social or meditative. It can be a personal challenge or a slow jog through the woods on an autumn morning. Running is a joy. That’s the message here. And everyone who’s willing to participate in this perfect, beautiful sport —young, old, big, slim, fast, or slow— is welcomed. Is loved. Is beautiful.

As impressive as these numbers are, they only tell part of the story. What they don’t show is how intensely people intersect with RunCzech events. Look at the runners lining up at the starting line. Look at their anxious families. Look at the spectators lining the course and standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the city squares. Or jumping to the beat at our music festivals. Czech Republic

Coincidence? Hard to say. But it’s absolutely true that running is as good for your mental health as your physical health. Marathon Music Festival

Music has long provided a kind of drumbeat for runners, helping them put one foot in front of the other, mile after mile. The more running can feel like a party, the more runners like it. The more running feels like entertainment, the more participation we can expect. That’s why, in addition to our giant post-race music festival, singers, bands and DJs are posted every few hundred meters along the course.

RunCzech has long felt the obligation as a good corporate citizen to support worthwhile causes, and to contribute to non-profit organizations who are helping people in need. euroheroes

our projects

EuroHeroes is a new initiative of RunCzech (in cooperation with European Athletics) that aims to identify, develop, and promote local sporting heroes, and motivate the public to exercise. In 2018 we dedicated two of our IAAF Gold Label races— the Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon and the Mattoni České Budějovice Half Marathon—to promote European Athletics. The elite field of these two races were limited to European athletes, including Czech runners, of course. The events, it goes without saying, adhered strictly to the IAAF Gold Label standards and EA standards.

runner’s journey with runczech

Hey, again that RunCzech Tram. Something about running. All runners are beautiful, ok, so why not me?

Running is so popular nowdays and I want to loose some weight. Lets check their web, maybe they can help me.

This FreeRun looks interesting. I will try to go with them, lets see what happens.

I am so happy! I will join at least two more races to compete in the RunCzech Running League because I want to be a winner in my category. I realize RunCzech organizes races also in Italy – great opportunity to travel, run and try the greatest pizza in the world!

32

Hey, I wait in the line up of my very first race. And this one is the big one! The “Moldau” starts to play. Bang! There is no way back! Let’s go! Hurray! All runners are beautiful!

runner’s journey with runczech My colleagues want to join me. The coach can come to our office for Energy at work! I checked the virtual bag and there are awsome partners’ offers.

I think I love running. I want to start with regular training. Running Mall is the perfect base for all beautiful runners!

In the evening I text my friends to download the RunCzech App with live tracking so they can follow me on-line. Also they can watch the race on Czech TV live.

Hey, I register myself for a first race! Just 10 km, but I received an e-mail with instructions to get my start number. There is no way back!

In a very good mood I decide to dress a costume for the race. Ok, I lost a bet, but it will be more fun. Moreover I will run for a charity organisation!

Cool down, I feel too nervous. Tomorrow is the day, now lets go to Expo to get my start number! For a better motivation I buy a new pair of shoes in adidas running – Prague Marathon Store. Gait analysis is very helpful. At home I realize I need also a new t-shirt, so I visit their e-shop.

OUR SPORT ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2018 New Czech women record

A 24-year old Czech record was broken by the amazing Eva Vrabcová Nývltová who finished the 20th Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon with a time of 1:11:01. By the way, Eva also broke the event record at the Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon (1:11:54) where, running as part of the EuroHeroes project, she finished first among women runners. She shined also at the Mattoni Olomouc Half Marathon where she broke the event record with a time of 1:11:10.

Unbelievably fast Birell prague Grand Prix

In 2017 we witnessed the women’s world record being set here. In 2018 the men shined. We saw the world’s second fastest 10 km time ever set by Rhonex Kipruto, who finished in 0:26:46.

usA reign supreme

Galen Rupp won the 24th Volkswagen Prague Marathon significantly enhancing his personal best (2:06:07). He became the first runner born outside of Africa to win the race in 11 years. 37

THE 20th ANNIVERSARY OF THE SPORTISIMO PRAGUE HALF MARATHON

In the 20 years since we introduced the Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon, it has evolved into something truly beautiful. Something iconic. An amazing experience for runners. And in celebration of our 20th anniversary, we made this year
a personal best.

RUNCZECH ANNOUNCED A NEW ‘ECO’ RUNNING EVENT – THE LIBEREC NATURE RUN

Keeping the country healthy means supporting runners, but also advocating for a healthy environment. That’s why 2018 was the inaugural year of the Liberec Nature Run. More than 2 000 runners took to the hills of Jizera mountains in what was an annual October event. Runners had their choice of two ecologically-friendly courses. One, 12 km. And the other, 22 km.

LORD SEBASTIAN COE IN PRAGUE

Global Running Day took place on June 6, 2018 all over the world. And the proclamation was made in Prague by IAAF President, Lord Sebastian Coe who also signaled the start of the 24th Volkswagen Prague Marathon. Prague, coincidentally, was the scene of Lord Coe’s first European Championship 40 years ago.

RUNCZECH CELEBRATES ITS MILLIONTH RUNNER

Jakub P. crossed the finish line at the 24th Volkswagen Prague Marathon this year, and was hailed as the millionth runner to cross a RunCzech finish line since we started hosting races in Prague in 1995. He was awarded a special T-shirt and a lifetime of free start numbers to all RunCzech races.

25th ANNIVERSARY OF VOLKSWAGEN PRAGUE MARATHON

10th ANNIVERSARY OF MATTONI OLOMOUC HALF MARATHON

If you think running 25 marathons is an amazing feat, imagine the effort that goes into staging them. But that’s exactly what we have done.

The Mattoni Olomouc Half Marathon is 10 years old. Young enough to be fresh and fun and new. Old enough to be smart, polished and perfect.

In 2019 the Volkswagen Prague Marathon will celebrate its 25th year in existence. It has taken faith. And it has taken courage, both from the founders and our partners.

Taking what we learned from staging our Prague events, we mapped out a magnificent course. We rallied the citizens of Olomouc who come out in droves to support the runners. And bolstered by the generous support of our partners, we turned this historic, beautiful town upside down, with music and laughter and life. It truly became another Mecca of running in the Czech Republic.

We have evolved into a highly successful organization in that time. And we’re proud of that. However while you can learn from the past; while it’s good to celebrate the past, we know that our legacy depends on staying focused on the future.

In 2019, the European Running Business Conference will be hosted by RunCzech. It will be held in conjunction with Birell Prague Grand Prix. Over 400 delegates will come to Prague for three days to enjoy not only the conference but also the race and the beautiful capital city.

We love what we do and we do it with love

A team of around forty individuals works hard throughout the year to ensure the RunCzech events are organized in the best possible way and the runners’ experience is simply unforgettable. But it would be impossible to do that without the help of thousands of volunteers. The support we get from them is not only much appreciated. It’s essential. No volunteers? No race. We are eternally grateful to each and every of them – for their enthusiasm, smiles and assistance.

THE GREAT RACES NEVER STUMBLE

Creating the perfect race-day for almost 100 000 runners takes experience, energy and a heartfelt commitment to the athletes and the spectators. That’s what we bring to every RunCzech event. From the day registrations open to the final note or our massive music festival. And it’s what our partners bring, too, in the form of funding, product and guidance. Together we’re doing something beautiful—creating world class events for runners, and helping to make the world a little happier, a little healthier place in the process.
