President’s Message As President of NCJW/Essex, I would like to welcome you to the 2022 Installation and Awards Brunch. I feel fortunate being able to share this special event in person as we honor our outgoing Executive Committee and Section Board members, welcome several new members to our Board, celebrate our deserving award recipients and, most importantly, share in the installation of our new president, Jennie Goldsmith Rothman. Our ad journal celebrates the many volunteers and staff members who have worked incredibly hard this year. They have all, once again, endured through very challenging times during what is proving to be a never-ending pandemic. We continue to create new and improved ways to deliver much needed services to our clients while holding true to the core values of NCJW/Essex: tikkun olam (repairing the world) and tzedek, tzedek tirdof (justice you will pursue). Our two very special award winners, Janet Berger and Laurie Kahn, exemplify these values as they support our mission in a myriad of ways. It is an honor to celebrate you both today. To all our donors: Your unwavering support and generosity is appreciated and much valued. Without you, the great work that we do would be much curtailed. Thank you for all that you contribute to NCJW/Essex. Although I have had a different presidency from those of my predecessors, this has been an experience I will never forget. I can honestly say that I would not have persevered without the support of an incredible Executive Committee, the Advisory Committee, the Board, and our amazing staff. Together we have served more clients than ever, stayed connected to one another through creative programming and meaningful advocacy and community service, and increased our capacity to partner with other organizations in our community to end systemic racism and inequity through our new racial equity, diversity, and inclusion initiative. My presidency may be coming to an end, but my passion, dedication, and support for NCJW/Essex will continue. Sadly, there is much more work to be done. I will never stop fighting for the rights of women, children, and their families in this community and beyond. Safeguarding individual rights and freedoms is more important now than ever before. There is no better group of women with whom to do this work than the NCJW/Essex women. With love, gratitude, and affection,

Penina Barr

2021-2022 YEAR IN REVIEW This year has been challenging and, once again, NCJW/Essex has risen to the challenge! Here are just a few of our highlights this year: Advocacy • Our commitment to fight for reproductive rights and abortion justice was heightened by the leaked SCOTUS draft opinion which will, if issued, overturn Roe. As a 73Forward Section, our work continues at the state and national level on all fronts. • T he Period.Project distributed more than 290,000 menstrual products, held 13 Time of the Month collections and advocated for more than a dozen menstrual equity bills being considered in the NJ legislature. • W e strengthened our anti-human trafficking work by educating our members and the larger community about sex and labor trafficking, and cheered the passage of the NJ vacatur bill, which enables survivors of human trafficking to make new lives for themselves. Back 2 School Store • T he 13th annual Back 2 School Store was again mobile and provided 1,007 underserved children from 35 agencies throughout Essex County with brand-new winter coats, pants, shirts, hats and gloves, socks, underwear, backpacks, school supplies, books, personal hygiene items and more. The Linda and Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex Center for Women (CFW) • Covid did not stop the CFW from providing clients with a wide range of career services support. Client numbers increased over the past year as new clients discovered the CFW.

• The Pack the Pantry program, with its monthly Food Heroes, collected over $11,000 in Shop Rite gift cards for our clients this year. Fund Development • T he Curtain Up! 2022 Gala, honoring two of NCJW/Essex’s shining stars, Isabel Margolin and Deborah Legow Schatz, was a runaway hit! • The 2022 Golf Outing went perfect-tee! • A big thank you to everyone who supported NCJW/Essex this year. Programming • NCJW/Essex held several fun and educational programs this year including virtual art museum tours, a chocolate tasting just in time for Hanukkah and a class on cocktails and a no-bake dessert perfect for Passover! Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (REDI) • Inspired by the Jewish values of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) and Tzedek,Tzedek Tirdof (justice, justice you shall pursue), NCJW/ Essex launched a new initiative on REDI to increase our capacity to partner with other organizations in our community to end systemic racism and inequity. Volunteer Outreach • We held several successful Mitzvahs-in-a-Minute that included diaper drives, food drives, the Holiday Gift Collection and Wrap, and a pediatric book collection which altogether benefited thousands of families throughout Essex County. • Current Events engaged seniors in lively weekly discussions at the JCC/Jewish Federation Housing in West Orange and expanded to the JCHC Village Apartments in South Orange. • T he Kids Emergency Closet provided clothing, accessories and sanitary products to 8 schools in our community for students in need.

Compassion. Courage. Conviction. Goal Achieving! NCJW/Essex has always striven to improve the quality of life for women, children, and families throughout our community. Thanks to our amazing members, volunteers and donors, the legacy continues.

INCOMING PRESIDENT

Jennie Goldsmith Rothman From that first moment when Jennie Goldsmith Rothman walked through the doors of NCJW/Essex, everyone who met her knew this was someone special. Now, more than a decade later, Jennie is poised to assume the presidency of the Section with her unique combination of commitment, warmth and undeniable smarts on full display. The recipient of NCJW’s 2017 Emerging Leader Award, Jennie brings a wealth of knowledge to her new position. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, she spent much of her professional career as a practicing employment attorney and now runs her own educational consultancy. Having grown up in Memphis, Jennie brings a refreshingly different perspective to her work with NCJW/Essex. Open to different opinions and believing strongly that there isn’t a single right way to do anything, Jennie has always sought out the “bigger world.” As she explains, “My curiosity about people’s lives and stories led me to venture beyond the South, live abroad, read extensively and dive into theater of all kinds.” Jennie’s first NCJW/Essex experience was as a volunteer in the Moving Forward program, teaching workplace skills and providing support to young women aging out of the foster care system. Inspired by the women with whom she volunteered and the work they were doing together, she kept coming back for more. Jennie worked on diverse projects ranging from leadership training to SLUT: The Play; co-chaired the Baby Bundles Mitzvah-in-a-Minute; and participated in JOIN for Justice advocacy training. She joined the Section Board and then the Executive Committee where she has served as Recording Secretary,VP Fund Development,VP Administration and co-chair of the recent Strategic Planning Committee and Executive Vice President. In recent years, Jennie put her professional skills to work serving on the Personnel Practices Committee. She is also one of the co-chairs of the REDI Committee, working to deepen our awareness of and commitment to Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion best practices in our Section so that we can be better partners and advocates as we create change in our community. Along with her husband Eric and teenage sons Benji and Sam, Jennie lives in Maplewood where she has deep community roots. She’s served in several PTA leadership positions and is an active member of Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel. “My Rabbi in Memphis used to say that Tikkun Olam was ‘God’s unfinished business’ and that always resonated with me,” Jennie recalls. “Coming out of the pandemic, there’s tremendous opportunity for NCJW/Essex members and volunteers to engage in Tikkun Olam. I’ve learned and grown so much from other NCJW/Essex volunteers who have become good friends. I’m looking forward to coming together to renew our connections with one another and repair our world.”

SERVICE TO SECTION AWARD

Janet Berger

If you want to know who the quintessential NCJW woman is, you need look no further than Janet Berger. She is bright, articulate, and not afraid to challenge the status quo. If you want someone to think outside the box, she is your go-to person. Always looking at the big picture, Janet can drill down and ask the right questions; she is an insightful, thoughtful, and strategic thinker. Her passion and commitment to the NCJW mission is all-encompassing, be it advocating for our beliefs or working to raise the funds necessary to implement important projects. After getting her Wharton MBA, Janet worked in the field of brand management and consulting. Along with her husband Robert and daughters Melissa and Elana, the family lived in Chicago and Sarasota, Florida before returning to her roots in Livingston. She took a break from her professional life but needed an outlet for her energy and skills which she soon found with NCJW. Joining the Section in 1994 to be a presenter for the Teen Dating Abuse project, she found her niche. She worked on that project for several years, becoming a trainer and then chair of the project. Seventeen Magazine interviewed her about our innovative work, and NCJW/Essex was featured with a 4-page spread. The Teen Dating Abuse involvement led to innumerable other leadership roles: chair of the Center for Women,Vice-President of Fund Development and other Section Executive Committee portfolios, creating, along with various co-chairs, the first fundraising Kitchen Tour, the first Back 2 School Store, the first Martin Luther King Day event (feeding the people at Christine’s Kitchen where she has been involved for over 10 years), and most recently, co-chairing the Executive Director Search Committee and helping to analyze and evaluate more than 30 Section projects for the Strategic Planning Committee. In addition to all of this, she has sat on almost every other committee NCJW/Essex has – Budget & Finance, Personnel Practices, Awards, Project Evaluation, just to name a few! Janet was honored to receive the Section’s Emerging Leader Award in 2001. While doing all of this, Janet also founded and ran a successful college counseling business for 20 years. Janet has stayed involved with NCJW/Essex all these years because the work continues to be stimulating and challenging, and she can use her special skills to make a difference in the community. Along the way, she has met some of her closest friends. Janet has also remained active in other community organizations. She was the founder and first president of the Livingston Education Foundation, chaired the search for a new Rabbi at B’nai Shalom congregation in West Orange, and is currently involved in the community granting process at Impact100 Essex. Of all that we do at NCJW, she is proudest of her commitment to the Back 2 School Store and considers her greatest Service to Section to be the passing of her “gavel” to her daughter Melissa who will be joining the NCJW/Essex Board next year. Mazel tov, Janet, on receiving the NCJW/Essex Service to Section award! It is so well-deserved!

HENRIETTA WEISER EMERGING LEADER AWARD

Laurie Kahn

Laurie Kahn, this year’s recipient of the Emerging Leader Award, is a perfect example of what happens when community service and advocacy work are in your heart. Witness her work on Menstrual Equity. Laurie had an “aha” moment in 2015 when she learned that women in shelters desperately needed menstrual products. She was shocked that women and girls in our society didn’t have their most basic needs met. Never one to seek the limelight, Laurie quietly set about researching, organizing and fundraising to create a community-wide collection of menstrual products for Safe House for battered women and children. It was so successful that products went to St. Philomena Church’s pantry as well! When Laurie learned from friends that NCJW/Essex was about to launch a new Menstrual Equity initiative called The Period.Project, she was all in. She joined the newly formed project’s committee and quickly rose to co-chair. Laurie also found time to work on other Section projects. In just six years, she has served on the Lunch & Learn, Project Evaluation, Gala, REDI Education and Strategic Planning committees. She joined the Section Board and served as Recording Secretary and VP of Administration on the Executive Committee. This past year, Laurie co-chaired the Back 2 School Store Deep Dive, an evaluation of our Section’s signature event. Today, Laurie is being installed as VP of Advocacy and she couldn’t be more excited to begin that work. “We’ve done so much, and yet there’s still so much left to do,” she explains. “I’m looking forward to immersing myself in our broad advocacy efforts, working with our terrific staff and volunteers.” Laurie brings to her NCJW/Essex volunteer positions a deep involvement in local, state and national affairs. She currently serves on the Livingston Zoning Board and has been a regular volunteer on Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill’s campaign since 2018. Laurie also volunteers at Toni’s Kitchen in Montclair and the Livingston Library. Laurie believes her volunteer efforts would not be possible without the strong support of her husband Jack and the constant inspiration provided by her daughter Natalie. They are with her every step of the way and are thrilled to see her work at NCJW/Essex acknowledged with this award. When Laurie talks about her time at NCJW/Essex, she always talks about the women she’s worked alongside. “I’ve been mentored by the most amazing women and cannot thank them enough,” she says. “Our Section is fortunate to have smart, experienced, dedicated volunteers who are always ready to share their knowledge while empowering newer volunteers like me. I truly believe I’m a more impactful volunteer because of my NCJW peers.” Mazel tov, Laurie!
