DEAR READERS With its core theme “Feeding the Planet. Energy for Life”, this year’s Expo in Milan is clearly dedicated to sustainability and ecologic principles. The number of pavilions, which have been built with the most sustainable of all construction materials – wood – is immensely high. This is no coincidence since its characteristic features - high pre-fabrication rate, easy transportation, rapid assembly and simple deconstruction and removal paired with spectacular architecture – speak for themselves. These were only some of the criteria, which caused Rubner Objektbau to win – in its capacity as general contractor – the invitation to tender published for 43 exhibition halls and three follow-up orders with an overall contract volume of 25 million Euro. The perfect cooperation and interaction of other companies within the Rubner Group – RHI, Rubner Holzbau, Nordpan, Nordlam and Rubner Türen – were at least as decisive and crucial as the above-mentioned criteria. The outstandingly positive signal that has been sent out by this year’s Expo for the future of our living environment has been a source of great delight and confidence: wood is an essential and indispensable construction material to achieve global climate objectives. CLEAR THE STAGE FOR TIMBER AND STEEL The multifunctional pavilion KA300 - including stage, cafeteria, information centre and viewing platforms - is the core element of the Karlsruhe festival summer activities, which will be celebrated on the occasion of the 300th city anniversary.
The load-bearing structure is made up of 98 differently inclined, and up to 19 m long columns and 72 horizontal girders. The beam structure, which is stiffened by slab walls and tension bars, covers a surface area of 1,000 m² and presents manifold different connection details, geometries and internal forces, each of them requiring an individual solution in the detailed design. In its capacity as general contractor, Rubner Holzbau was also responsible for the coordination of several additional trades, such as handrails, staircases and parts of interior fittings. Thanks to the high, factory-made prefabrication degree, including trimming, boreholes and glaze, all timber construction works were concluded in only 5 months.

With its innovative design features, the 16.4 m high beam structure made out of timber and steel creates a charming contrast to the historic scenery of the Karlsruhe Palace. Due to its transparent construction, and with a ceiling height of 5.2 m, the pavilion is a symbol of liberality and cosmopolitanism, two features that have characterised the city since its early days of foundation.

FEEDING THE PLANET ENERGY FOR LIFE This will be the core theme of this year’s Expo in Milan (IT), which will be celebrated from May 1st until October 31. Apart from the construction of 43 exhibition halls for four separate exhibition spaces (Clusters), Rubner has also been charged with the construction of the Children’s Park and of three Pavilions dedicated to “Slow Food”. With this project, the Rubner Group, under the lead of the general contractor Rubner Objektbau, has successfully managed to win one of the most important international invitations to tender for the design and construction of exhibition halls. The combination of the highly outstanding characteristic features of wood as construction material – ecologic, energy efficient and architectonically demanding – and the long-term experience and know-how offered by the Rubner Group, were convincing arguments for the client and perfectly fitted the basic idea of the Expo, which will be celebrated under the core theme “Feeding the Planet. Energy for Life”. The exhibition halls have been built as common exhibition areas for more than 30 countries that have decided not to have their own pavilion. “Bio-Mediterraneum”, “Islands, Sea and Food”, “Arid Zones” as well as “Cereals and Tubers” are the four Clusters, which – in terms of architecture –
operate with the characteristic features of the world region they are representing. In this mammoth project, Rubner scored with the processed timber volume not only in terms of quality criteria but also in terms of rapid and guaranteed construction periods as well as in terms of a perfect cooperation and interaction among the different Group companies. After a construction period of only two months, all timber structures had been concluded and could be handed over - as turn-key constructions - to the first delegations. This efficient work was rewarded with three demanding follow-up orders: the design of the outdoor spaces provided for the common exhibition halls, the construction of the Children’s Park and the construction of three additional halls - fully made out of timber and dedicated to the “Slow-Food” Movement. www.objektbau.rubner.com/expo

This Cluster invites the visitor to literally experience the smells and colours of the Mediterranean Region. The Cluster hosts all countries, which border on the “Mare Nostrum” and which are linked by Mediterranean cuisine and nutrition habits. The countries comprised in this Cluster are Albania, Algeria, Croatia, Egypt, Greece, Lebanon, Libya, Serbia, Malta, Montenegro, Tunisia and San Marino. The area houses twelve exhibition halls, three technical buildings and four kiosks, leading to the main central square which is roofed by a pergola.

CLUSTER BIO-MEDITERRANEUM
CUSTER ARID ZONES The Cluster that concentrates on the topic “Agriculture and Nutrition” in arid zones receives the visitor in a desert-like landscape. This Cluster hosts all the countries that struggle with the problems of increasing desertification and arid climate. The exhibition area comprises eight modular exhibition buildings and a technical building arranged around a central square. The square is characterised by cylinders and cables made out of polycarbonate that are suspended from the ceiling by a steel structure. The countries hosted in this Cluster are Eritrea, the Palestinian territories, Mauretania and Senegal.

CLUSTER CEREALS AND TUBERS This Cluster is dedicated to the topic of biodiversity. In terms of architecture, the Cluster imitates the typical landscapes of cereals and tubers growing areas by designing this exhibition area as a valley basin. The countries, which are represented in this Cluster, are the so-called ThirdWorld Countries whose agriculture strongly depends on the cultivation of cereals and tubers. The group of countries represented in this Cluster comprises Bolivia, Haiti, Mozambique, Togo, South Africa and Iraq. The Cluster is made up of seven modular, jute-covered buildings. The central passage is equipped with sun-protection screens and leads the visitor to a roofed square. The eye-catcher in this central square is an impressive chimney, which is part of the neighbouring kitchen.
CLUSTER ISLANDS, SEA AND FOOD This Cluster stands out for its exotic character and houses islands or archipelagos with similar eco-systems whose food supply is mainly based on the use of sea resources. The countries comprised in this Cluster are Cap Verde, the Maldives, and the Seychelles as well as the Caribbean countries and the Pacific Island States. The Cluster is composed of two exhibition buildings and one technical building, a catering area for food tasting and a square roofed with bamboo sun-protection screens.

This exhibition area is made up of three different buildings, which form an open triangle. The buildings have been entirely made out of timber and are meant to be a reminder of former farmhouses and working farms. In the inside, visitors will have the possibility to taste and enjoy slow food.
The eight oversized timber coils, with a diameter of 12 m and a height of 7.5 m each, architectonically represent a garden that is dominated by trees with huge branches. This area has been specially designed for children. The wood’s inherent values convey the importance of sustainability: from the tree, as a natural element, to wood, as a material. A symbol for growth and future in harmony with nature.

RUBNER HOLZBAU FRANCE The French timber construction branch office of Rubner Holzbau established in the year 2010 has experienced a perfect development and has successfully established itself in the French market. In the first five years following its inauguration, the company has already implemented some 30 projects. From the very beginning, the French branch office of Rubner Holzbau located in Chassieu has been charged with the execution of timber construction projects in France, which are coached by an interdisciplinary team of local experts. The highly experienced experts have been recruited from renowned timber construction companies and can resort to long-standing experience in the implementation of technically complex and architectonically demanding projects – from design, to statics up to execution of construction works. By the implementation of some 30 projects within a period of only five years, Rubner Holzbau France has developed into a reliable partner for glulam constructions, wall and façade elements, cross-laminated timber constructions, timberglass and post and beam façades, building shells as well as general contractor services. With annual increase rates of approximately 30 %, the branch office has successfully and sustainably established in the French market. More than 60 % of the projects are executed with French partners since promotion of the locally based industry is part of the company’s philosophy. In addition, more than 3,700 working hours of social inclusion were executed in the year 2014.
Even in the field of production and project implementation, sustainable solutions and ecofriendly CO2-balances are emphasized. The very close cooperation with the production site Ober-Grafendorf (AT) and the thus achieved use of wood from sustainably managed forests underline the fact that ecological principles are of major importance. Among the list of executed projects, there are innovative and internationally outstanding constructions: Maison de l’Inde, the first multi-storey timber building in Paris, the extension of the Center Park in Moselle, the largest project of a timber construction and erection company in its capacity as general contractor, the cinematographic foundation “Fondation Seydoux-Pathé, in Paris, the school building in Sissonne. STARTING THE VALUE CHAIN RUBNER HOLZINDUSTRIE Rubner Holzbau offers quality and promptness in the execution of its services. This is achieved thanks to a vertical production chain, which is unique throughout Europe. Rubner Holzindustrie (RHI) - the Group’s timber industry company - stands at the very beginning of this value chain. The scope of production services that are offered by the Rubner-Group covers the entire value chain of all-in-one solutions in timber construction. The range starts with the company’s sawmill, passes on to Europe’s largest production site for single layer, multiple layer and glulam panels, which, at the same time, is Europe’s leading timber engi-
neering company, Rubner Holzbau, englobes window, door and house construction as well, and concludes with the Group’s know-how in terms of general contractor services for turnkey constructions. The PEFC certified company Rubner Holzindustrie, is exclusively supplied with PEFC certified raw timber from suppliers located within
a radius of approximately 80 km. The so produced sawn timber is almost entirely used for construction purposes. The modern sawmill located in Rohrbach (AT) not only is an expert for the production of lamellas for laminated timber. It has also specialised on further on-site wood processing to obtain high-quality solid construction timber. Hence, reliable scanning of source products and mechanical identification of material solidity are of prime importance. Continuous investments into technically innovative plants guarantees constant high quality on the plant – starting with sawn timber production to wood drying and refinement. In addition, the Austrian wood research institute supervises production and controls all processes to secure compliance with standards. ECOLOGICAL CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL FOR NATURAL HABITATS Agricultural multi-purpose halls, stables, cultivation and production buildings set-up in economic glulam beam and modular construction. For many decades now, Rubner Holzbau has been emphasizing that ecological principles and the preservation of our habitat are top priority issues at all levels. The company has implemented these principles by using local wood sources, maintaining sustainably managed forests, reducing as much as possible primary energy consumption, reusing production waste materials and by securing a low environmental balance. Therefore, the use of timber constructions in natural habitats and agricultural environments is almost a must. Apart from its ecological criteria and visual appearance, glued laminated timber is a convincing material in many respects: its supporting capacity is comparable to that of steel but with considerably less weight, it secures high fire resistance periods and, compared to massive constructions, it provides for high seismic safety and has very good resistance properties when exposed to aggressive agents. Cantilever constructions of up to 50 m allow almost unlimited architectonic alternatives, an increased range of motion as well as
perfect extension or refurbishment possibilities of usable and storage areas. No matter whether a ridged, a flat or a single-pitch roof is required and not matter whether individual wall or façade constructions are needed – the modular construction offered by Rubner Holzbau not only allows to execute roof and wall structures with special requirements in terms of structural design and fire resistance. The company is also able to offer solutions for all areas where – thanks to high prefabrication degrees – rapid, weatherresistant and cost-efficient constructions are in demand. WINNER OF THE WOOD IN ARCHITECTURE AWARD
In its statement, the jury praised the use of huge precision-engineered timber structures and the combination with holistic and sustainable construction methods. One of the facts that clearly stunned the judges was the project duration: within a period of only one year, Arup Associates executed the first building in the UK, which has been planned and built in accordance with the most recent “Wellness Certification” specifications. A very high portion of daylight, the use of natural materials in combination with innovative design. The inside of the new, 28 m high “Believe in Better Building” office and training facility of the British Pay-TV and broadband provider Sky is dominated by the huge and exposed glulam timber elements and cross-laminated timber ceilings. An open staircase leads through the three-storey atrium to the different multi-purpose building areas. Flexibility was one of the main requirements formulated by the client. The building’s architecture had to respond to the constantly changing needs of the Skyemployees. Meeting zones and common areas were as important as individual workplaces. None of the main spaces were conceived with fixed uses in mind but were designed to be as variable in use as possible. Highly flexibly designed office rooms, equipped with the most up-to-date IT equipment, can quickly be interconnected to form large, interactive training rooms but can also be totally removed to accommodate large meetings and gatherings.

Arup Associates wins the Award for the tallest, multi-storey timber office building in the UK – with laminated timber from Rubner Holzbau in Ober Grafendorf.

HOME DIY STORES ECOLOGICALLY ROOFED WITH TIMBER The new OBI DO-IT-YOURSELF Store with garden centre in Bruneck (IT) has been designed under ecological aspects as full timber construction. Only the west faรงade and the administrative building have been built in reinforced concrete.

With more than 500 home improvement stores in 11 European countries, the OBI chain is Europe’s largest operator of do-it-yourself-stores. The company has already cooperated in the past with Rubner Holzbau in Austria. On a sales area of more than 5,100 m², OBI will for the first time offer on this new location in Southern Tyrol its wellapproved product range. In addition, the concept comprises the installation of a garden centre, which offers large variety of flowers and plants for indoor and outdoor areas. Within these modern exhibition areas and with constantly new offerings, home handymen and gardeners will comfortably find all products they need under one roof and on an overall surface of some 6,100 m². Rubner Holzbau was responsible for production and assembly of the 100 m long and 60 m wide hall. Some 1,200 m³ of glued laminated timber were used. The triple glued beams, with dimensions of 54 × 230 cm, allow for a support grid of 23 m. This structure is complemented by 1,500 m² of pre-fabricated wall elements and 1,500 m² façade cladding made out of corrugated metal sheet.
The client opted for a timber-made structure since timber allows for much shorter construction periods and, in addition, the material represents the idea of sustained constructions. One of the most important factor, however, are the large span widths than can be executed by glulam beams without any additional supports. Thus, the completely roofed construction was handed over after an assembly period of only seven weeks. In order to secure rapid construction progress, Rubner Holzbau prefabricated all construction elements at its factory site in Brixen so that the individual elements were delivered to the site ready for assembly. All façade cladding structures were installed in parallel with the assembly of wall elements. The project additionally benefitted from the fact that the timber engineering company had been integrated at the early stage of the design phase already. www.holzbau.rubner.com/projects

PRESERVE VALUES ENERGY-ORIENTED REFURBISHMENT Ecological and economic principles are first priority issues when it comes to energy-oriented refurbishments: making use of the existing structure, preserving values and reducing energy consumption instead of building new structures.
To build with wood - this is active climate protection. The largest CO2 binding is achieved by construction activities. Each cubic meter of wood, which is used in construction, stores the carbon content contained in one ton of CO2 and, in addition, substitutes CO2 from alternative construction materials, based on not renewable resources and mostly produced in strongly energyconsuming procedures. For more than 70 years now, Rubner Holzbau has been working with the most sustainable construction material of all. The idea of sustainability also means preserving and optimising existing constructions. No matter if we are talking about industrial constructions or large turn-key projects; every single professionally executed building refurbishment pays-off in the long run. Energy-oriented refurbishments offer considerable cost savings and prolong the use of existing constructions. The thus achieved improved living or working comfort together with an increased acceptance of the user will directly pay off for the operator or the investor.
