Black Diamond Carbon Fiber Chair Inspired by the beauty of Orchid flowers, the Black Diamond Chair aims to embody the organic softness of flower petals and strong iconic lines that draws the user in. Conceptualized to be light, thin and at the same time strong, Black Diamond is built out of carbon fiber layered sheets. The name for the chair came from a particular orchid created by the awarded orchid breeder Fred Clarke Fdk. After Dark ‘SVO Black Diamond’ FCC/AOS.

Ørgreen Optics Eyewear concept collection Having been awarded with a scholarship for an internship abroad by the INOV-ART* program, I worked as an intern for nearly 6 months for the Danish international known eyewear design company Ørgreen Optics, in Copenhagen. This is some of the work I’ve done during my internship, a concept collection where I showcase what I’ve learned about the art of designing eyewear and my ideas for new glasses that could be added to future collections.

*INOV-ART is an initiative of the Ministry of Culture of Portugal, fostered, managed and executed by DGArtes and funded by Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional, I.P.

No Land in Sight Creating a self sustainable environment on a house boat No Land in Sight began as an exploration in how a self-sustainable environment could be fitted in a seaworthy houseboat, providing to its two users (persons with flexible jobs that don’t need a fixed address to perform them) the possibility of exploring the world without boundaries or, if they wish, stay away from civilization for long periods of time (up to 3 months). By delivering solutions that meet the users’ basic needs, the ties that hold them to shore could be diminished, making them less grid dependent. The final result was a 50” hydrofoil, kite sailboat inspired by marine life (manta rays and hammerhead sharks) as well as stealth vehicles. Using renewable energies (solar and wind) to power its different systems, the houseboat is fitted with a hydroponic garden that provides enough vegetables for a healthy subsistence during a long period offshore when integrated with fishing and provisions brought from shore; a retractable vertical wind turbine provides mechanical power for the mechanicalAHO | Spring Semester 2010 | Industrial Design Master Thesis

vapour-compression desalination system that produces drinkable water for the garden’s nutrient solution and to the users needs, as well as h eat in the cold seasons, electric energy and aeration for speeding the biological waste breakdown managed by a compost reservoir, enabling up to 4 times more space than conventional waste reservoirs. Systems like the hydrofoils and the kite sail usually are used for their performance properties but in this houseboat concept they were selected for being able to enhance comfort and stability of boats when sailing. This self-sustainable houseboat gives you a glance in what could be a home of the future, a home you can bring with you, a home that gives you a new picture of the world everyday.

SEAT S.E.V. Car Concept Taking as a starting point the motto produce less produce different consumes less consume different, “A Car for the Modern Women project was created as a deliver for a car design competition for the Spanish car brand SEAT and Automagazine in Portugal. Innovative ideas regarding new types of energy and smart materials were explored as well as the needs, likes and dislikes of modern women and they were gathered into a booklet that was delivered with a scale model of the car.

DJ Pan Cooking Device | MIDI Controller The course deals with the interaction between new technology and advanced form generation. Having three key word concepts, the students had to create a physical product that should revolutionize the field of their studies. In common days, modern societies demonstrate a time decreasing spent in cooking and eating. Pre-made and fast-food drastically reduced the time spent in these two connected activities. My focus to resolve this problem relied in giving added values to the cooking, values that being “mixed with the food preparation can return pleasure, social connection between people, whether in eating food together, whether in learning new menus and also defend a healthier way of eating. Play - a recurrent word in all the process of conceptualization, this can be viewed in the kitchen as playing with flavors, color, and smells, to achieve pleasurable food. Like food, music is social behavior that is deeply connected with the word play. You learn how to play musical instruments; you play music in your electronic devices wherever you go, symbol of the music and electronic culture globalization. All this musical activities are also a source of pleasure. AHO | Autumn Semester 2008 | Technoform Studio Course

Liquid Fusion Glass Workshop Ten days workshop learning how to design products using glass as the main material, learning by experience the constrains and potential that glass gather. “The ephemeral and sublime qualities of glass provide a rich palette for innovation and intervention. Working immediately with glass forming processes such as hand pressing, blowing, slumping, flameworking, stained glass and glass sheet forming, we will examine glass making as an art form with pertinent methodologies for today’s design disciplines. Domain de Boisbuchet | September 2007 | Liquid Fusion Glass Design Workshop

Leg Rest Stool Reusing Old Materials The aim of this college project was to reuse an old material that was offered to my class so we could create a piece of furniture that would be able keep other belongings inside. The material was a MDF and cork sandwich. Being a material that could not be bended, I approached it in a different perspective so I could make double curve shapes with it. By cutting the sandwiches in curved shapes and stacking them in parallel using 4 big screw bars, bolts and stoppers I was able to create the fluid curves I was looking for. The object I came up with was a stool to lay down your legs and relax that has a compartment to keep a blanket or magazines. This stool can also be used as a normal stool.

The Kittinger Project Wii Fit Game Concept In this one-week task the students had to test and analyze the Nintendo Wii game console and its controller, the Wii Fit. After analyzing the good and bad points the students had to join in groups of 2 and create a game concept for the Wii, paper prototype it, test it with students outside of the group and finally make an Evidencing until the end of the week. Our proposal was centered in a unconventional and never used before way to use the Wii Fit. Instead of staying on top of the controller, the user lay down with his chest on the controller. The tests presented us with an amazing discovery. This way of using the controller is much more stable and easy, being able to reach new records in the games much faster. The game concept is a futuristic wing suit skydiving game simulator, where the player has to reach different shining bug clouds to get points and power to his boosters. As Evidencing we created a movie-clip, showing the fly experience that is felt in the game, and also showing some snapshots of what the game should look like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jCKvbnF0a8 AHO | Spring Semester 2009 | Tangible Interactions Studio Course

Ethnology Museum of Lisbon Wayfinding Honorable Mention by the Sign Society of London

This was a group project with working with PatrĂcia Pereira and Pedro Gromes. It was requested the creation of a new signalization and wayfinding system for the Museum of Ethnology in Lisbon as well as the outdoors showing the current exhibitions. The graphic identity was inspired in floral and tribal motifs using the Museum logo colours. FA-UTL | Spring Semester 2008 | Graphic Design II Course

GEN Typographic Illustration The aim of this work was to choose 3 letters of a font type, modify them and use them in a city context. I chose the letters G E and N from Helvetica font type, I slimmed the type faces and gave them some serifs. As city context I chose graffiti because in the same way as word and type propagates through the world, graffiti and stencil do the same in our cities. I used women images as a stencil where the modified letters multiply and propagate in different sizes and colours in abandoned urban spaces.

Interview Remake Graphic Composition The student should choose a text with more than 4 pages and arrange it in a typographic composition using titles, subtitles, introductory texts, phrases quotations and images. I chose a biography of a gothic-metal Portuguese singer that was written in a national newspaper. I’ve used a format slender than A3, to give a more elegant look to the graphic composition and I also used a simplified vector image of his band’s logo.
