SEASON OUTLOOK RUTGERS WRESTLING MEDIA GUIDE

2013/14 SEASON OUTLOOK Smith (Wantage, N.J.) represent RU’s three returning NCAA qualifiers, Redshirt senior 184-pounder Dan Seidenberg (Red Bank, N.J.) is one of two senior leaders on the squad and returns after wrestling up at 197 pounds last season. That leadership has proven invaluable to the Scarlet Knights’ 11 incoming freshmen, many of whom will see their first collegiate action this season.

W

ith 23 of its 26 roster spots occupied by underclassmen, the Rutgers wrestling team enters the 2013-14 season much younger than it has been in recent memory. Gone are four NCAA qualifiers and five starters, leaving behind a squad hungry to prove its worth on the national stage. “We’re very, very young – that’s the reality,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “We’re going to wrestle some really young kids and probably start the year with four freshmen, three sophomores a junior and a couple seniors. It’s a young group, but it’s a group that’s hungry and excited to compete. That being said, everybody is excited to compete in the summer time and the fall and the preseason, but it’s how you handle the adversity through the course of the season that really dictates where their youth is at.

“The leadership has been very important,” Goodale said. “Just showing them the right way, showing them how to handle the academics at Rutgers, how to handle the social life at Rutgers and how to handle the constant training. “I don’t think they’re ra-ra guys. Billy Smith’s not a ra-ra guy, Vinne Dellefave’s not a ra-ra guy and of course neither is Seidenberg. But they do it by example and they’ve been a great example.” RU gets its season going on Sunday, Nov. 3 against EIWA foe Hofstra. From there, the Scarlet Knights will compete in a pair of duals, including their home-opener against Boston University on Sunday, Nov. 17.

“SOMETIMES YOU JUST GET GUYS THAT DON’T KNOW ANY BETTER AND WANT TO GET THEIR HAND RAISED AND THAT’S WHAT WE’RE HOPING FOR.”

Afterwards, the squad will wrestle four duals in a two-day span at the Journeymen/ ASICS Northeast Collegiate Duals on Nov. 30 and the second annual “Grapple at the Garden” on Dec. 1.

“Sometimes you just get guys that don’t know any better and want to get their hand raised and that’s what we’re Goodale will lead his team against hoping for. Then, you get some young Virginia and future Big Ten opponent guys that hit a wall and start thinking Michigan State at the Northeast Dutoo much and start questioning their —SCOTT GOODALE, HEAD COACH als in Albany, N.Y., and take on George confidence. We hope to have the front Mason and another future Big Ten ripart of that, guys that are just young, val Maryland at the “Grapple.” don’t know any better and just want to wrestle hard.” Returning to lead the Scarlet Knights this season are four key grapplers, including two seniors and three NCAA qualifiers. Redshirt senior 133-pounder Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.), redshirt junior 165-pounder Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.) and redshirt sophomore heavyweight Billy

“It is a good schedule. Nothing is really going to jump out at you, but it’s good for our program right now,” Goodale said. “There are some highs in it – I think the Las Vegas Invitational is great national-caliber type tournament, ‘Grapple and the Garden’ and the Northeast/ Journeyman Duals as well.”

thing we do, whether it’s running stadiums, whether it’s running hills, whether it’s swimming and then wrestling. They don’t question, they just do and that makes it easy to do.”

“The ‘Grapple at the Garden’ is a special thing,” Goodale said. “It’s not ideal for us to wrestle two matches the day before and then come down but you can’t say no to wrestling at Madison Square Garden.”

RU enters the season under the radar after graduating many wrestlers who were the heart of the program for so long. Now, a new era has launched in Goodale’s tenure. Despite the team’s youth, he expects nothing less than for his guys to reach the podium.

After the squad wraps up the Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 6-7, it will enter the heart of its dual schedule. Highlighting the Scarlet Knights’ slate are home matches against Columbia and Harvard on Jan. 3 and Jan. 5, respectively, followed by consecutive trips to Iowa State (Jan. 17), Cornell (Jan. 26) and Lehigh (Feb. 8) in a pivotal road stretch. The Scarlet Knights wrap up their season on Friday, Feb. 21 at the RAC, where they will take the mat against Drexel. Despite a number of tests on the Scarlet Knights’ 2013-14 slate, Goodale is confident his squad is up for the challenge if only for one reason – a renewed desire to reach the podium. “The attitude has changed probably because we’ve gotten so young,” Goodale said. “These guys don’t question any-

“I see it in the future, but I’m a very impatient guy and it’s got to happen now,” Goodale said. “This sport is unlike any other sport where freshmen can make immediate impacts. If you’re a great freshman and your expectations are high, you should be placing at the national tournament. “That is just the way this sport is. Now, that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything down the line, but if you’re in our lineup, your goal should be to make noise at the National Tournament and get on that podium.”

SCOTT GOODALE Head Coach • Seventh Season Scott Goodale enters his seventh season as the Rutgers head wrestling coach. During his tenure, Goodale has brought the Scarlet Knights into the forefront of collegiate wrestling. Under Goodale’s watch, 32 RU wrestlers have earned NCAA bids and 34 Scarlet Knights have placed at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships. RU has tallied an impressive 100-33-1 record during his first six years “On the Banks.”

In 2010-11, RU reached new heights as a program, finishing the year as a top 10 program, ranking ninth in the NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll after posting a school-record 21 victories against only two defeats. Rutgers continued its strong season at the 107th EIWA Championships where they placed third as a team, tying the best finish ever for the program. Additionally, the Scarlet Knights saw nine wrestlers place at the EIWA Championships, including Scott Winston who took home the 165-pound bracket crown to become the first RU wrestler to capture an EIWA championship since Tom Tanis in 2001. By virtue of the strong EIWA and regular season, RU qualifed a school-record tying eight individuals for the NCAA Championships.

The 2012-13 campaign was a successful one for Goodale and Co., as the Scarlet Knights returned to the national spotlight by ending the year ranked No. 25 in the NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll courtesy of a 16-4 dual record. RU saw eight grapplers finish in the top eight in the EIWA Tournament and sent seven wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. The 2011-12 season was marked by the NCAA success of senior Billy Ashnault, who finished one win shy of AllAmerica status at 141 pounds. In total, five Scarlet Knights represented RU at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Goodale kept momentum going forward for the 2012-13 campaign with the hiring of four-time Penn State All-American Frank Molinaro in April 2012, who is a native of Barnegat, N.J. Rutgers additionally played host to one of four regional sites of the 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, continuing to boost the Scarlet Knight grapplers’ national prominence.

RUTGERS UNIVERSITY RUTGERS WRESTLING MEDIA GUIDE

ROBERT L. BARCHI is the 20th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Since beginning his tenure on September 1, 2012, President Barchi has been overseeing preparations for integrating into Rutgers most units of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, as outlined in the recently adopted New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act. He has begun work on a university strategic plan (the first in more than 15 years) and was part of a statewide coalition of university, business, and labor leaders urging voter support of a $750 million bond act for higher education construction, which was approved by a wide margin in November. President Barchi announced on November 20, 2012 that all intercollegiate athletic teams on Rutgers’ New Brunswick campus will join the Big Ten Conference at a date to be determined.

Prior to Jefferson, he was provost and chief academic officer of the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution founded in 1740. There, he had responsibility for Penn’s 12 schools, all academic programs, athletics, students, and faculty. Dr. Barchi was born in Philadelphia but spent his formative years not far from Rutgers in Westfield, N.J. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Georgetown University, and Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed specialty training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and holds board certification in neurology. Throughout his career, Dr. Barchi has been active as a teacher and as an NIH-funded researcher in the fields of neuroscience and neurology, and he has published extensively in his field. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of his pioneering research on the structure and function of voltage-gated ion channels in nerve and muscle, and on the role these critical molecules can play in human disease. He was also elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians and named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Neurological Association, and the American Academy of Neurology. In 1972, Dr. Barchi began his academic career as a faculty member at Penn. Within a decade, he rose to become the David Mahoney Professor of Neurological Sciences. Between 1983 and 1996, he served as director of the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences—an interdisciplinary, university-

The University of Pennsylvania named Dr. Barchi as its provost and chief academic officer in 1999, and he served in this capacity until 2004. As provost, Dr. Barchi had responsibility for the university’s 12 schools and their academic programs and budgets and Penn’s intercollegiate athletics program, as well as for Penn’s students and faculty. During his tenure, he worked with president Judith Rodin to reassert the primacy of the academic mission in the direction of the university. He recruited new leadership to nine of the 12 schools at Penn and established a number of universitywide interdisciplinary educational and research institutes. He also led the university through a comprehensive strategic planning process. As president of Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Barchi oversaw a period of tremendous growth. The university established three new schools—including the Jefferson School of Pharmacy, which graduated its first class in May 2012, and the Jefferson School of Population Health, the only school in the nation to offer a master’s degree in chronic care management. Overall student enrollment increased by 51 percent and annual degrees awarded rose by 54 percent. Dr. Barchi also expanded the reach of the campus, inaugurating the Partnership in Healthcare Education, an academic affiliation with the University of Delaware that offers dual-degree programs between the two institutions. Other accomplishments at Jefferson include successful implementation of an ambitious strategic plan that integrated the university’s clinical, education, and research missions; a comprehensive facilities master plan that supports those missions; and a major fundraising campaign that provides the resources necessary for success. During Dr. Barchi’s tenure, Jefferson established 22 new endowed professorships and 50 endowed scholarships, helping to ensure a healthy and diverse community of faculty and students. The university surpassed

$300 million in fundraising under his leadership, twice the amount raised during the preceding eight-year period. During his presidency, Dr. Barchi also oversaw the transformation of Jefferson’s urban environment into a vibrant university campus. A coordinated construction program, coupled with improved landscape design and signage, helped provide visitors and the Jefferson community a sense of place and connectedness to the compact urban campus in the heart of the city’s historic district. Dr. Barchi is married to Francis Harper Barchi, a tenure-track faculty member of the Rutgers School of Social Work. Before coming to Rutgers, she was a senior fellow in the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was engaged in education and research activities relating to international research ethics. Francis Barchi holds a Ph.D. in social welfare, a master’s in bioethics, and a master’s in nonprofit leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a bachelor’s degree from Smith College. She is the former executive vice president of the Dana Foundation in New York, a post she assumed following a 20-year span as president of her own company, which provided protocol and strategic communication services for international clients. Francis Barchi’s research focuses on the social and behavioral factors that influence women’s health in southern Africa. In 2009, she completed the first major quantitative study on women’s autonomy and gender-based violence in Botswana, and she is the principal investigator on a study in that country examining the extent to which women’s understanding of HPV and cervical cancer influences their decision-making about prevention and treatment. She is currently part of a team responsible for ethics training of health professionals in Botswana, Tanzania, and Guatemala. As an avocation, President Barchi is an expert in the history and mechanical development of clocks and watches. In addition to collecting and conserving examples of these timepieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, he designs and constructs his own precision clocks in his basement machine shop. The Barchis, who have four adult children and one young dog, spend their leisure time at their home in coastal Maine where they are avid boaters and hikers.
