Rebuilding Together New Orleans (RTNO) is a program of the Preservation Resource Center and an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. Since 1988, RTNO has restored over 1,400 homes, strengthening neighborhoods by reducing blight and stabilizing the residential population. RTNO serves homeowners who have an annual household income less than 80% of the average median income as determined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. RTNO prioritizes elderly or disabled homeowners, single heads of household with minor children, and veterans.

OCTOBER BUILD 2013 Workscopes Completed: 21 Steps Built:

On February 15, 2014, over 150 national and local volunteers descended on the Algiers neighborhood as part of the 2014 NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service. The volunteers worked on six homes on Leboeuf Street, installing handrails, steps and fences, rehabiltating kitchens and bathrooms, and painting the exterior and interior of certain homes. With the NBA’s focus on serving veterans, four of the homeowners were elderly veterans, and dozens of the volunteers were active military members. Thanks to the volunteers, NBA Cares and Rebuilding Together National, seven homeowners were given safe homes and the Algiers neighborhood received an overdue boost.

HOMEOWNER SPOTLIGHT

Mrs. Margie Shorty has been a resident of the New Orleans’ Ninth Ward her entire life. Her house on Reynes has been in the Shorty family since the 1930s and where she and her husband Earl, an Army veteran, raised their four children. When water began pouring through the neighborhood on the morning of August 29, 2005, Margie, Earl and a few neighbors were swept by the water onto the second-floor balcony of a nearby building. From there, the group was able to reach the roof. They waited for three days, before being rescued by former Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu. While tirelessly working to rebuild their family home, the Shortys were forced to relocate to Philadelphia to stay with extended family near a VA Hospital where Mrs. Shorty took care of her husband. Unfortunately, Mr. Shorty passed away in 2012 from a longtime illness. In 2013, after eight years and numerous trials, RTNO was able to bring Mrs. Shorty back home thanks to the City of New Orleans - HOME Grant, The Home Depot Foundation and dedicated volunteers.
