National 2017 RTÉ 2018 Symphony Orchestra

Patron: Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland

A welcome note It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra 2017/2018 concert season during which we celebrate the orchestra’s 70th anniversary. From the start, the Irish Free State broadcaster 2RN (later Raidió Éireann) always supported a music ensemble. The first manifestation of this commitment was the ‘Clery’s Instrumental Trio’ which by 1948 had grown into a new orchestra. 02

Under the baton of Jean Martinon, and led by Florentine violinist Renzo Marchionni, the first concert by the Raidió Éireann Symphony Orchestra took place at the Phoenix Hall on February 14th 1948. Since then the orchestra has continued to grow in reputation to create a unique place for classical music within contemporary Irish culture. At the core of each performance is you, the orchestra’s loyal audience. We value your support and always welcome feedback on our programmes and performances. We hope you enjoy and continue to support your national orchestra.

«

This season we are honoured to welcome the hugely talented Nathalie Stutzmann as our Principal Guest Conductor. Nathalie conducts five concerts, culminating with a performance of Beethoven Symphony No. 9 At the core of each ‘Choral’ for our season finale. She also conducts the Philharmonic Choir in Mozart’s Requiem in the performance is you, RTÉ autumn.

the orchestra’s loyal audience.… »

We are proud to present many exciting and multitalented artists to perform extraordinary music this season. Our opening Prelude concert puts a focus on Irish music when internationally acclaimed composer Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin makes his début with the orchestra. Later in the season, we also present a new Concerto for Organ by Gerald Barry, RTÉ’s Composer-in-Residence, and a first performance of the complete Piano Concerto by Deirdre Gribbin, The Binding of the Years. On the centenary of his birth, we pay homage to great American composer Leonard Bernstein, with a performance of his Chichester Psalms, conducted by Joana Carneiro. In January, conductor Alexander Shelley presents this extraordinary composer’s Overture to West Side Story and Prelude, Fugue and Riffs. Other season highlights include conductors Harry Bicket and Jaime Martín, violinist Nikolaj Znaider directing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and conducting Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, Carlos Kalmar conducting the unstoppable Storm Large in Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins. Guest soloist Alexander Toradze performs Shostakovich’s second piano concerto, Boris Giltburg plays Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto, and Alexander Bernstein and Fiachra Garvey join forces for Poulenc’s Double piano concerto. I hope we bring you many memorable moments of music throughout the season. Best wishes, Anthony Long General Manager, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra 03

The RTÉ NSO performs symphonic works from the classical repertoire during its main concert season, from September to May, at the NCH. The orchestra works with world-class virtuosos to present a stimulating and engaging programme. It collaborates with many distinguished artists and with sister groups, the RTÉ Philharmonic Choir and RTÉ Cór na nÓg. During the summer, in June and July, it presents a programme of popular classics. Over the years, the RTÉ NSO has worked with many legendary artists including Isaac Stern, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Joan Sutherland, Bernadette Greevy, Kiri te Kanawa, Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Mstislav Rostropovich, Paul Tortelier, Barry Douglas, Sir James Galway, Olivier Messiaen, Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt and Maxim Vengerov. The RTÉ NSO plays a vital role in promoting Irish composers. Amongst the many well known names whose works it has premiered are Gerald Barry (RTÉ’s Composer-in-Residence), Raymond Deane, Seoirse Bodley, Elaine Agnew, Frank Corcoran, Linda Buckley, Ronan Guilfoyle, Donnacha Dennehy, Siobhán Cleary, Shaun Davey and Bill Whelan. Composer Lab, RTÉ NSO's mentoring scheme with Contemporary Music Centre (CMC), nurtures composers in composing for orchestra, and recently collaborated with David Bremner, Seán Doherty, Francis Heery and Matthew Whiteside. Nathalie Stutzmann, RTÉ NSO’s new Principal Guest Conductor, is an artist who shares a natural alchemy with the orchestra. Nathalie’s inaugural concert in her new role takes place in September 2017. She holds this position until May 2019. The RTÉ NSO’s Main Season concerts are broadcast and streamed live on sister station, RTÉ lyric fm, Ireland’s classical music station.
