Looking Back At 2013 I

don’t remember a year going by as fast as 2013. It seems like just yesterday that I was sworn in as the President of the Roseville Chamber of Commerce. Nine months later, we find the holidays are just around the corner and our chamber board is starting to prepare for our planning retreat where we will set the goals and objectives for 2014.

In addition to planning for next year, we will also spend some time looking back on what we accomplished in 2013 and how we build upon our progress. Earlier this year, our board set some aggressive goals for membership and member outreach. I am happy to report that through a lot of hard work, we are projected to either hit or exceed each of our goals. Specifically, we have dedicated a lot of time and effort to growing our membership by better communicating our value and enhancing the benefits that chamber members receive. Consequently, we have grown more already this year than the past two years combined. Doing so has helped us exceed our budget targets and implement new enhancements to your experience as a Chamber member. One of those enhancements has been a complete redesign of our website and Insight Newsletter.

Chamber Members Fulfill All Shopping Needs T

he season of shopping is upon us, whether it’s picking up food for a feast or going from store to store to find the perfect gift. The Roseville Chamber wants to see all of the community keeping the shopping local and with Chamber members. The impact from $1 spent can ripple and multiply 2.5 to 8 times around, increasing economic activity closer to home. The Roseville Chamber plays a key role in making sure that Roseville’s economy is thriving and we want to keep that momentum going this holiday season. Here are some benefits for shopping with Chamber Members: • Member to Member Discounts – Mention you’re a Chamber member and potentially receive a discount. • Boost the Local Economy – Purchasing locally re-circulates your money throughout the community we live. • Credibility – Like-minded people who value and take an active role in making Roseville a better place to live, work and do business. • Convenience – Save travel time and gas.

Roseville Chamber of Commerce, serving Roseville and Granite Bay, is proud to be an accredited fourstar Chamber of Commerce. The Accreditation Program was instituted by the U.S. Chamber to recognize effective organization performance. Only 10% of the Chambers throughout the nation successfully complete the accreditation process for this voluntary program and less than 1.2% achieve four-star status.

How the Chamber Keeps It Local

S

taff lunches, phone systems, computer maintenance and water delivery are a few examples of how the Roseville Chamber happily employs our members to provide all of our business and day-to-day needs. We understand the importance of doing business with people who see the bigger picture in bettering our community and business development in Roseville. The Roseville Chamber is full of dynamic businesses that appreciate the significance of connecting with the community, City and other businesses. Our more than 1,200 members fulfill every business category with products, services and resources available to suffice any need. At the Chamber, we hold ourselves accountable ensuring that every aspect of what we do and who we purchase from is provided by a member. Even one

of our larger renovations like the redesign of our website was provided by Augustine Ideas, who are loyal members to the Roseville Chamber. The Chamber searches for every avenue to support and endorse our members. We have annual community events that provide businesses the opportunity to show their presence and what they have to offer. The Chamber also orchestrates monthly luncheons and breakfasts which are catered, sponsored and held by members. The support and loyalty to each one of the Chamber members is critical for our success and for the local economies in both Roseville and Granite Bay. The holiday season is essential for our businesses to boost the revenue that is circulated throughout our local area. Do your part as a Chamber member and look for the plaque or check online first before you do business – you may even find a member to member discount!

Roseville’s Holiday Celebration

I

n 1961, Roseville’s first holiday parade marched through the streets of Downtown Roseville. This year marks the 52nd Annual Sylvia Besana Holiday Parade, which is the longest running tradition in Roseville. The entire community looks forward all year for this festive event. On Saturday, November 23rd, starting at 10 a.m. on Vernon Street the parade will commence. Ring in this holiday season with thousands of families and spectators posted along the streets of Downtown Roseville taking in the entertainment. Expect to see the horses trotting along, bands playing festive melodies, dance teams twirling and old fashioned cars honking as they make their way through the streets. The holiday parade is the perfect event to brighten your holidays and enjoy family and community fellowship. 6

County Update Kirk Uhler, Placer County District 4 Supervisor

Alternative Gifts for this Holiday Season “I

t’s the most wonderful time of the year”…and it isn’t. While the onset of the holidays evokes memories of magical holiday seasons past, childhood wishes fulfilled and happy times with family, it can also be accompanied by high expectations, financial anxiety and the stress of, well, not-so-happy times with family. I know that, for me, the holiday season isn’t complete until I have body checked someone in to an end cap on Christmas Eve while struggling for the last over-priced, low-quality toy imported from a third-world country that thumbs its collective nose at UN child labor standards. If you would rather eschew the excesses of the over-produced commercialism widely marketed as the key to a happy holiday season (and thereby avoid being on the receiving end of my Christmas Eve body check), Placer County has plenty of locally grown opportunities to mark people off of your Christmas list without teaching your kids colorful new vocabulary words in the big box parking lot. The fine folks at Placer Grown (http://www.placergrown.org), famous for bringing you quality local meats and produce at several farmers’ markets in our area, also list local farms where you can purchase Christmas trees and products like jams, jellies, sauces and marmalades. If you have any people on your list who enjoy the fruit of the vine, check out the growing Placer County wine industry. With twenty wineries sporting a wide array of varietals, you are sure to find something you like, and perhaps something you might be willing to share. Placerwine.com has information on member wineries, events, and how to find your way along the Placer Wine Trail. And let’s not forget the pride of Placer County, our famous mandarins that have been scientifically proven to reduce allergies due to their high level of naturally occurring synephrine. And, just in time for Christmas, are the Mountain Mandarin Orchard Days, during which orchards in Penryn, Newcastle, Loomis, Lincoln and Auburn will be open from 10am-4pm on December 7, 8, 21 and 22. So, do you risk a physical confrontation with a crazed local elected with Tickle Me Elmo blood-lust in his eyes, or do you eat and drink your way to a happy holiday season while supporting our local agri-businesses? Choose wisely. And Merry Christmas.
