History
Following hard times in the early nineteenth century, Solothurn experienced an economic upswing with the arrival of the railway in 1857, quickly developing into an important industrial centre. Today, most of the industry has vanished, and the town has developed a servicesbased economy, offering a great standard of living and a vibrant cultural scene.
When the Romans were seeking a crossing of the Aare over which to build their road from Aventicum to Vindonissa, they decided on a place which the Celts called Salodurum, or “Water Gate”. The settlement which the Romans founded here in around 20 AD also bore the name of Salodurum. In around 330 AD, this small town with temples and baths was converted into a castrum, or fortress, by the Roman military. The impressive remnants of this can still be seen in various parts of the Old Town. The town’s two saints, Ursus and Victor, were venerated as early as 400 AD. In the early Middle Ages, a pilgrimage church was erected over the grave of Ursus, which was maintained by canons from the ninth century onwards. Today, the site is home to the impressive St. Ursus Cathedral. Solothurn was the setting for a political event with international ramifications in 1038 when the Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II held a court here and crowned his son, Henry III, as king of Burgundy. When the last duke of Zähringen died in 1218, the town managed to place itself under the direct rule of the Holy Roman Emperor, and thus became a free imperial city. However, its citizens still had to fight for their freedom of self-determination against the claims of St. Ursus Abbey and neighbouring noblemen. Between 1344 and 1532, the town did then manage to gain a large, albeit rather dispersed, territory, what is today the canton of Solothurn. In 1481, Solothurn joined the Swiss Confederacy. Thanks to the Confederacy’s mercenary alliance with France and the establishment in Solothurn of an embassy for the French king’s ambassador, many patrician families from Solothurn joined the mercenary service and built large fortunes as a result. To this day, the Solothurn townscape is shaped by buildings created to showcase the wealth of these families during the Baroque era. The close ties with France lasted until the departure from Solothurn of the French ambassador after the beheading of the French king in 1792.

Churches, bulwarks and towers, 11 fountains – there are sights wherever you look. Visit the prestigious Church of the Jesuits and the impressive St. Ursus Cathedral, and marvel at the astronomical clockwork on the Clock Tower. Stroll through the beautiful and wellpreserved Old Town and discover centuriesold buildings dating from various eras.

St. Ursus Cathedral The St. Ursus Cathedral was built by the architects Gaetano Matteo Pisoni and Paolo Antonio Pisoni between 1762 and 1773. The majestic exterior stairs are impressive. Built of light Jura limestone, the cathedral is a major architectural work in the early Neoclassical style.
Bulwarks and towers The bulwarks built between 1667 and 1772 surrounded 11 bastions. The populace saw these bulwarks as a symbol of oppression and tore nearly all of them down between 1835 and 1880. Only the bastion by the Riedholz Tower and the semi-bulwark by the Krumm Tower remain.
Church of the Jesuits Built between 1680 and 1689, the Church of the Jesuits is regarded as one of Switzerland’s most beautiful Baroque buildings. The main façade is adorned with a statue of the Virgin Mary, and the church’s interior features a high alter dating from 1704.
11 fountains Once used by the local women to wash clothes in, the 11 public fountains of Solothurn are particularly splendid and showcase the town’s wealth during the age of ambassadors. Solothurn has the most fountains of any place in Switzerland. The majority were built in the 16th century.
Clock Tower The oldest part of the building was erected in the early 13th century. The astronomical clockwork was added in 1545. The clock has three hands. The hour hand indicates the hour of day and night. The sun and moon hands turn anti-clockwise and indicate the position of the celestial bodies.
11i Clock At around 3 metres tall and with 11 hours on its clock-face, the Solothurn clock displays Solothurn time and plays the town song using 11 bells, always at 11 am, 12 pm, 5 pm and 6 pm. A harlequin chimes the hours. The clock can be seen on the façade of the UBS building at Amthausplatz 1.
Solothurn Town Hall The town hall is home to the Solothurn government and parliament. Presumably dating from the 14th century, the “crossbowman’s house” was purchased from Balthasar Remp by the government in 1474. The building was extended to the west and south.

Museum of the Old Arsenal There is lots to see here: the historic building, rifles, pistols, sabres, swords, uniforms and flags. The 400 pieces of armour displayed in the armoury are a real highlight.

Solothurn Town Theatre Plays, operas, concerts, dance performances. All year, the Biel Solothurn theatre orchestra offers the finest in cultural entertainment at Switzerland’s oldest theatre venue. The recently renovated theatre is already worth the visit for the breath-taking Baroque frescoes from 1778/79.
Altes Spital – Culture The cultural programme at this former hospital offers gems of cabaret-style entertainment all year round. Event formats include acoustic nights, breakfast stories, Tuesday jazz and improv theatre, as well as selected concerts, theatre and cabaret.

Things kick off in January with the Solothurn Film Days, the Swiss film industry’s biggest festival. The cineastes have barely departed before the carnival revellers take over. In spring, the nationally prestigious Literature Days take place, followed by the Bike Days, the country’s key cycling festival. These and other events make Solothurn such a vibrant town full of joie de vivre.

Solothurn Film Days For over 50 years, the Solothurn Film Days have been presenting a selection of Swiss films each January. This event is a driving force in Swiss cinema culture and a place where audiences and film-makers can interact. With over 68,000 guests, it is among Switzerland’s most prestigious cultural events and the key festival for the Swiss film industry.
Carnival In Solothurn, carnival begins on 13 January, when the town’s name is changed to Honolulu. “Dirty Thursday” starts at 5 am with the Chesslete torch-lit procession to drive away the winter. Another highlight is the carnival procession on Sunday and Tuesday. The madness ends on Ash Wednesday with the burning of the “Böögg”, or bogeyman.
Bike Days Solothurn The Swiss cycling festival is a must-visit event, and not just for bike aficionados. Solothurn provides a venue for a whole range of bike manufacturers and retailers to display their products. The town’s immediate surroundings also offer a variety of terrain for different test routes and tournaments. There’s plenty to marvel at during the events.
Solothurn Literature Days The Literature Days allow authors to engage with their readers, while visitors can enjoy the huge range of events on offer: readings with Q and A sessions, panel discussions, workshops, music and theatre, translation workshops, literary exhibitions, and film-screenings and events in schools.

Diners enjoy sitting under the trees or on the terrace overlooking the Aare, and not just in fine weather. In summer, there is a real Mediterranean vibe to be found in the bars and restaurants along the Landhausquai road.

In times gone by, the Aare was used to transport goods; today, it is valued for its leisure opportunities – for walks along its banks, a refreshing dip in summer, and enjoying beautiful sunsets. And there is ample water-based fun to be had elsewhere in the immediate vicinity – at Zuchwil Sports Centre, for example, or outdoors at Lake Burgäschi or in a canoe ride starting in Biel/Bienne.

Aare canoe route no. 1 Exploring the Swiss Plateau in a canoe on the River Aare is a fascinating experience. The journey begins in Biel/Bienne, continues through Büren an der Aare and Solothurn, and ends in Wangen an der Aare. A diverting yet peaceful canoeing adventure through secluded landscapes.
Solothurn Riviera In summer, there is a Mediterranean holiday vibe along Solothurn’s Landhausquai road by the Aare. Locals and visitors alike are drawn to the trendy bars and cosy outdoor lounges. People-watching and savoir-vivre are celebrated at the Riviera.
Boat ride on the Aare On the ride from Solothurn to Biel/ Bienne, you will encounter storks in Altreu, see the historic town of Büren an der Aare, and experience the impressive locks in Port. This cosy boat ride is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Switzerland.
Büren an der Aare This little town has many sights in store for visitors: the castle of the former reeves, the town hall, the two town fountains, the arcades and the splendid wooden bridge over the Aare. The river journey from Solothurn to Büren an der Aare takes 90 minutes.
Solothurn Lido Solothurn Lido is idyllically situated and offers views of the Jura mountains. It has sunbathing areas, swimming pools, a diving tower, direct access to the River Aare and a paddling pool for children, complete with a giant water slide.
Altreu The trip begins with a boat ride from Solothurn to Altreu. The boat docks directly by the Restaurant Zum Grüene Aff. The Witi information centre provides interesting facts about the storks and their habits. The centre was declared a European Stork Village by the EuroNatur Foundation.
Zuchwil Sports Centre The centre offers activities for athletes and families. In summer: outdoor pool, minigolf, tennis. In winter: ice skating and ice hockey. All year: indoor pool, spa, sauna park, gym, training centre with sports hotel.
Lake Burgäschi This moraine lake in the border region between the cantons of Solothurn and Bern was created during the last ice age. It is believed to be a remnant of the Rhone glacier. Visitors can walk around the lake and enjoy a dip at the quaint lakeside baths in summer.

The trails through the Verena Gorge or up to Mt. Weissenstein are beautiful and popular walks. Yet there are also plenty of walks to be enjoyed on the Balmberg and Grenchenberg, as well as the nearby Bucheggberg and Thal Nature Park. Verena Gorge Following a leisurely stroll through the Verena Gorge, located some 20 minutes from Solothurn’s Old Town, you will reach the hermitage. The path leads through the forest, along a babbling brook and to the chapels and the still-inhabited hermit cabin.
Weissenstein cable car A visit to Mt. Weissenstein is rewarding in any season. During the 10-minute scenic cable-car ride, you can enjoy the views of the Swiss Plateau and the Alps. A great experience for the whole family as you travel up to 1,280 m above sea level.
Mt. Weissenstein Depending on the weather, a spectacular alpine panorama awaits you here: at 1,280 m above sea level, you can enjoy views stretching from Mt. Säntis to Mont Blanc. The first Jura range can be explored via countless walking trails. Mt. Weissenstein is reachable by cable car from Oberdorf.
Weissenstein Express The train line from Solothurn to Moutier leads through the Weissenstein Tunnel: travel from German- to French-speaking Switzerland and discover this diverse region with its breathtaking Jura peaks and wonderful sights.
Balmberg Balmberg, which is easily reached by postbus, is also the starting point of longer and shorter walks: towards Weissenstein and the Röti peak, or towards Stierenberg and Chambefluh ridge. The Balmberg is particularly alluring in autumn, offering sunshine, seas of mist and splendid views.
Thal Nature Park The Thal Nature Park lies nestled in the mountain ranges of the Solothurn Jura, between Weissenstein and Wasserfallen and within easy reach of Basel, Bern and Zurich. Here you can enjoy peaceful walks or bike rides.
Grenchenberg This walk begins in the town of Grenchen. The signposts guide you to Stierenberg and the Wäsmeli, a walk of approx. 90 minutes. The route continues along an easy trail to the Upper and Lower Grenchenberg, the highest point at 1,348 metres above sea level. Enjoy nature in all her glory.

There are popular cycling routes leading through Solothurn. Whether you prefer a mountain bike or e-bike, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery along the banks of the Aare or up in the Jura mountains. You will also see idyllic villages and large farms. Inline skaters are in paradise here, as the riverside is wonderfully flat. And golfers appreciate the region’s two well-tended, 18-hole courses.

With the e-bike The Solothurn region is fun to explore in the saddle of an e-bike. The regional cycle routes offer you pristine nature, with idyllic landscapes, sleepy farming villages and storks in their rooftop eyries.
Chasseral – Weissenstein – bike route no. 44 Cycle along the Jura range and enjoy the amazing views of the Swiss Plateau and the snowcovered Alps. This tour is a real sporting challenge, with a climb of over 1,200 metres.
Bucheggberg tour The gentle slopes of the “Buechibärg”, as it is known locally, are great for cycling tours. Ride through the gentle landscape and past beautiful farmhouses, whose roofs stretch down almost to the ground. The cycle route leads to Solothurn via Biberist, Lüterkofen and Lüterswil.
Tissot Velodrome Grenchen Tissot Velodrome features a 250-metre wooden cycling race track in a multi-purpose hall that also has great infrastructure for other forms of cycling, indoor sports and events. Why not take in a race or a guided tour?
Wasseramt route no. 802 This tour traverses the Wasseramt district, from Solothurn along the Aare to Lake Burgäschi and on to Herzogenbuchsee. Along the way, you will encounter the theme of water in a whole variety of forms. This easy route covers a 17-km distance and a climb of 130 metres.
Swiss Plateau skate route no. 3 Inline skating through the Three Lakes Region: the route links Romanshorn with Estavayerle-Lac and runs right through Solothurn. Doing the entire route is best left to experienced skaters. The leisurely short tour through the Solothurn region is also suitable for beginners and families.
Swiss Plateau and Aare route no. 5 and 8 This route from Aarau to Solothurn follows the Aare as it winds its way through the charming landscape. After Solothurn comes Altreu, famed for its stork colony. This is a great spot for a picnic. The sounds of the storks can be heard far and wide. This easy route is also suitable for families.
Golfing At 6,584 metres, the 18-hole championship course at the Wylihof golf club is the longest in Switzerland. Limpachtal golf course features 18 varied fairways, 14 water obstacles and a 666-metre long fairway on hole 11, a European record.

Dinosaur tracks in Lommiswil In a quarry above Lommiswil is Europe’s largest area of tracks left by quadruped dinosaurs. A viewing platform reveals at least nine sets of tracks with over 400 dinosaur footprints. These are most visible in slanting light, so visits in the early morning or late afternoon are best.
Balmberg Rope Park The rope park sits amidst a natural forest. The trees are linked with ropes and different kinds of bridge. 10 courses of varying difficulty levels offer a thrilling adventure for young and old alike.
Holzweg Thal, Thal Nature Park This adventure trail allows you to experience the forest and the natural resource that is wood in an artistic and playful way with your mind, heart and hands. The installations by artist Sammy Deichmann provide new and surprising insights into nature and await discovery.

Footpath through the Verena Gorge The path crosses Riedholzplatz by the Museum of the Old Arsenal and leads through the museum park. Use the Werkhofstrasse underpass to reach St. Niklausstrasse. From here, the path is marked with footpath symbols (SwitzerlandMobility route 478 Weissenstein – Passwang).
