WELCOME The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to celebrate 70 years of music-making with its 2016 season at the intimate and acoustically exceptional Cadogan Hall, home to the Orchestra for eleven years. This season at Cadogan Hall introduces a brand new concert entitled Symphonic Divas, an orchestral tribute of timeless classics all in one sparkling performance. Also taking centre stage is the prestigious Dame Evelyn Glennie, an inspiring pioneer of percussion music and an astounding performer. Yet another highlight is the return of the much-loved Pinchas Zukerman Festival this summer. These concerts at Cadogan Hall cover a variety of programming from Mozart to Vaughan Williams, all under the leadership of the eminent musician Pinchas Zukerman. This 2016 season comprises exceptional musicians, powerful and impressive works and world-class performances. These concerts will take place on the concert stage of Cadogan Hall from 6.15pm, before the main concerts begin at 7.30pm. One of Tchaikovsky’s most well-known chamber works, this string sextet was given its title as Tchaikovsky sketched the work’s main theme whilst visiting Florence in Italy.

The storm-tossed Overture that opens tonight’s concert raises the curtain on one of Wagner’s most searingly dramatic creations from a composer, described either as a ‘megalomaniac’ or ‘the Master’, whose revolutionary style took the world by storm. Performing Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.3 will be the outstanding pianist and audience favourite, Natasha Paremski. Throughout the work, Rachmaninov maintains an extraordinary degree of melodic and structural spontaneity, fully reflecting the blistering speed at which it was composed. Having created fully visualised sound-pictures, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition will have audiences imagining they are strolling through a gallery, with each picture telling its own story.

In no other violin concerto is the soloist’s first note, so delicately dissonant and offbeat, more beautiful than in Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. Performed by one of Britain’s leading violinists, Matthew Trusler, this piece demonstrates Sibelius’ passion for the violin and complete understanding of the sound of the instrument. Led by Spanish maestro Eduardo Portal, the Orchestra will open the concert with layers of lively, fast-paced strings in the Overture to Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila. With its long, expressive lines and elegiac mood, Barber’s Adagio for Strings has been described as the American anthem of mourning, having been played at notable figures’ funerals. Closing the concert will be Beethoven’s stirring Symphony No.7, a wonderful blend of orchestral gravitas and swelling tunes, recently used to great effect in the film The King’s Speech. Brimming with humour and sprinkled with wit, this concert brings together pieces such as the Suite from Prokofiev’s absurd fantasy-opera The Love for Three Oranges, the Overture to Bernstein’s comic operetta Candide and Ibert’s cheekily fast and furious Divertissement. Joined by Alexandra Soumm, ’who delivers playing of astonishing power from a slight frame in a way that seems to defy nature,’ the Orchestra will perform Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.1. Coloured by a magical, fairytale-like quality, the piece is notable for its constraint and lyricism. Rounding out the concert will be a delightful selection from the father of the Broadway stage, Cole Porter.

The City of London Choir and the RPO return to the stage in the second of a series of concerts featuring two of the great composers, Mozart and Haydn. The ever-adored and lyrical Piano Concerto No.21, performed by the exceptional Leon McCawley, opens the evening with a journey from liveliness to suffering, eventually ending in release. This sublime, muted work is strongly associated with the 1967 film Elvira Madigan. In Haydn’s well-known Paukenmesse, or Mass in Time of War, the insistent and foreboding timpani reflect the troubled time of war in Austria, and underscore an otherwise spirited and sacred choral score.

This exciting spring concert opens with Weill’s Suite from The Threepenny Opera, which is filled with the jazz-infused zeal of the 1920s. The jazz influence extends to both sides of the Atlantic in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, performed by exceptional pianist Peter Jablonski. Led by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Associate Conductor, Alexander Shelley, the Orchestra will explore Debussy’s unique musical language in his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune before closing with Ravel’s delicate and subtle Le tombeau de Couperin, which is poignantly tinged with the sadness of World War I.

Led by distinguished conductor, Fabien Gabel, the RPO performs a sparkling programme of Russian gems, including the Overture to Borodin’s Prince Igor opera and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5. Alexandra Dariescu will impress with Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody based on Paganini’s Caprice No.24 for solo violin. This much-loved work adds depth, drama and dynamic energy to Paganini’s original work and will be electric on the Cadogan Hall stage. What began as one of Tchaikovsky’s most difficult works to compose subsequently became one of his most well-known, as we hear his magnificent masterpiece, Symphony No.5.

The accomplished British musical ambassador, Dame Evelyn Glennie, joins the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for an explosive performance. Having had a leading role in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, Dame Evelyn Glennie is a groundbreaking musician and her performance will be a highlight of this 2016 concert series. Performing a new composition, entitled Dreamachine by Michael Daugherty, she will bring an electric magnetism to the stage. Orchestral works will include a Suite of music from Fauré’s much-loved Pelléas et Mélisande and closing the concert will be Sibelius’ magnificent Symphony No.5, featuring the elegant, swaying swan motif.

Vaughan Williams’ lush, expansive work for string orchestra opens this summer festival. This unusually orchestrated work is scored for a large string orchestra, smaller string ensemble and a solo quartet, showing off the string orchestra in all its glory and evoking an unmistakably British sound. In contrast to the sweet and lyrical melodies of Mozart’s Third Violin Concerto, Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony is grand and majestic, with the Orchestra out in full force.

Tchaikovsky has a well-earned reputation as one of the great masters of orchestral writing, with graceful melodies and sumptuous harmonies oozing romance and drama. His three works performed in this concert portray different elements of Tchaikovsky’s style, from wistful and melancholic to luscious and intense. Opening the concert is Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, which has a certain youthful charm while also portraying his developing musical maturity. Ending the concert in style will be Dvorˇák’s cheerful and lyrical Symphony No.8.

Scored for string quartet and string orchestra, Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro was composed to show off the performers’ virtuosity. Pinchas Zukerman’s solo line will soar above the Orchestra in this expressive masterpiece. Following on the drama is Mozart’s Fifth Violin Concerto; often referred to as ‘Turkish’, the wild, frenzied Allegro in the final movement emulates a Turkish style with melodic leaps, pounding rhythms and percussive strings. Concluding the Festival is the instantly recognisable and much-adored Beethoven Symphony No.5. This concert is supported by MWM Consulting
