[Laura Shacklette, Carrollton, TX, serves as the Dallas-Fort Worth events coordinator of Texas Rovers and has organized the SCARR event for four years. When not off-roading, she’s teaching yoga or watching movies with friends —ed.] ast winter, we figured it was time to leave Dallas’s ice and snowcovered roads behind and take a 7-hour drive—hey, it’s Texas, after all—to the Ft. Davis Mountains of the Big Bend region.

A Big Bend Adventure Our Dallas/Ft. Worth group consisted of Christopher Pullen in his 2004 Discovery 2 with 2’’ lift, ARB bumper winch, SD rack, CB, sliders, snorkel, dual optima battery system, front and back skid plates, CB, Engel fridge and his most important add-on, a bottle-opener bolted on his rear panel. His co-pilots were his son Michael and BBF Luke. Gavin Kwait, who recently sold his Range Rover Sport for a 2004 Disco, kitted-out his Rover with an SD rack with Hellas, 2” lift, ARB bumper, winch, Engel fridge and CB. Leona and son Travis accompanied him. John Johnson wanted to bring his ’90 Range Rover County, loaded with sliders, front true track, trailing arms, D90 steering relocate, rear ARB locker, 2” lift, Mantec Snorkel, Rovers North spring keepers, Warn 9.5 winch with Viking synthetic line and Hella HID auxiliary lights, but alas, it was in the shop, so John drove a—gulp— Toyota. New Texas Rovers members Jay and Connie Azores drove their 2011 Range Rover Sport, having left their 2003 Discovery at home. Now that their son has left for college, they have entered the Land Rover world with gusto and were looking forward to their first offroading experience in Big Bend. Last, but not least, were Darrell and Diane Oliver in their 2000 Disco 2, with me as a backseat driver and official photographer. Darrell’s workhorse boasts a 3” lift, winches back and front, sliders, custom bumpers front and rear, and LED lights. Darrell owns Oliver’s Repairs in Lewisville and his Rover reflects his own craftsmanship.
