Making Sense of Sports

Critical Race Theory

Ellis Cashmore

Kevin Hylton, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK

Praise for a previous edition:

Critical Race Theory provides a framework for exploring racism in society, taking into account the role of institutions and drawing on the experiences of those affected. Applied to the world of sport, this framework can reveal the underlying social mores and institutionalized prejudices that have helped perpetuate those racial stereotypes particular to sport, and those that permeate broader society.

”Ellis Cashmore’s text is a clear and eloquent outline of many of the important areas in the broad field of sports sociology ... an original, interesting and timely interpretation of a fast-moving field of academic study.” - Times Higher Education Supplement This unique, multidisciplinary introduction reflects the changing character of contemporary sport. Already established as a standard text, this updated edition is essential reading for undergraduates of sociology and sports studies.

Fathering through Sport and Leisure

AVAILABLE AS A COMPLIMENTARY COPY

Edited by Tess Kay, Loughborough University, UK

Sport, Masculinities and the Body

Fathering is a highly contested concept in popular, media, academic and policy discourses, yet in the areas of family studies and men’s studies, the leisure component of family life is under-played. This book provides a long overdue and thorough investigation of the relationship between fatherhood, sport, and leisure.

Ian Wellard

Fathering through Sport and Leisure investigates what fathers actually do in the time they spend with their children. Leading researchers from the fields of sport, leisure and family studies examine the tensions men encounter as they endeavour to meet the new expectations of fatherhood, and the central role that sport and leisure play in overcoming this. Analysed in relation to social trends and current policy debates, this unique collection examines fathering in a wide range of contexts including: • parental expectation and youth sports • fathers and daughters • leisure time and couple time in dual earner families • divorce, fatherhood and leisure • the child’s perspective on fathering, sport and leisure. The book shows how contemporary fathers use sport and leisure to engage with their sons and daughters, achieve emotional closeness and fulfil their own expectations of what it means to be a “good father”. Drawing on research carried out in the UK, Australia, Canada and the United States, this is a crucial text for anybody with an interest in leisure studies, family studies or fatherhood. August 2009: 234 x 156: 240pp Hb: 978-0-415-43868-1: $160.00 Pb: 978-0-415-43870-4: $49.95 eBook: 978-0-203-89070-7

Series: Routledge Research in Sport, Culture and Society This groundbreaking work explores masculinity and the body within sports. Sports continue to retain expectations for presentations of specific forms of masculinity. The body is central to these presentations. These everyday bodily performances are rehearsed and performed either successfully or unsuccessfully – and the consequences of these actions play a significant part in the ability of the individual to continue to take part. Through participant observations, sporting life-history interviews (with over forty men) and research with children, this book examines the ways in which “appropriate” sporting masculinities are learned and enacted to varying degrees of success. Wellard highlights the social processes which impact upon individual constructions and formulations of masculine identity and review these in relation to broader debates on gender, embodiment and sporting participation. This book contributes not only to the academic fields of sport and gender, but also to the efforts to confront continued forms of “accepted” gender discrimination. Hoop Dreams on Wheels Disability and the Competitive Wheelchair Athlete Ronald J. Berger, University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, USA Contemporary Sociological Perspectives Hoop Dreams on Wheels is written in an accessible storytelling style, as it will be read by a general audience as well as by students in college courses on disability, sport, the body, and social problems. The main component of the book, the life histories of the players, will be especially appealing to students, who will find these accounts useful as a way to develop their sociological imagination, that is, an understanding of the interrelationship between biography and history in society and the ways in which personal troubles are related to public issues. By linking personal stories to collective narratives, the life histories reveal the world of ordinary peopleís “problematic living experience,” to quote Norman Denzin, and show how society “speaks itself” through the lives of individuals. Additionally, the book is of interest to scholars in the sociology of disability, sociology of sport, sociology of the body, life-story researchers, and professionals in the fields of therapeutic recreation and rehabilitative counseling. 2008: 6-1/8 x 9-1/4: 170pp Hb: 978-0-415-96510-1: $125.00 Pb: 978-0-415-96509-5:$31.95

Sport and Gender Identities

Sport, Technology and the Body

Masculinities, Femininities and Sexualities

The Nature of Performance

Edited by Cara Carmichael Aitchison, University of the West of England, Bristol, UK

Tara Magdalinski, University College Dublin, Ireland What is the nature of athletic performance? This book offers an answer to this fascinating question by considering the relationship between sport, technology and the body. Specifically, it examines cultural resistance to the enhancement of athletes and explores the ways in which performance technologies complicate and confound our conception of the sporting body. The book addresses concerns about the technological “invasion” of the “natural” body to investigate expectations that athletic performances reflect nothing more than the actual capacity of the untainted athlete. By examining a series of case studies, including Paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius, Fastskin swimsuits, hypoxic chambers and an array of illicit substances and methods, the book distinguishes between internal and external technologies to highlight the ways that performance enhancement, and public reaction to it, can be read. Sport, Technology and the Body offers a powerful challenge to conventional views of athletic performance that stand authenticity against artifice, integrity against corruption, and athletic purity against technological intrusion. It is essential reading for all serious students of the sociology, culture or ethics of sport. 2008: 234 x 156: 200pp Hb: 978-0-415-37877-2: $150.00 Pb: 978-0-415-37876-5: $45.95 eBook: 978-0-203-09938-4

Fit for Consumption Sociology and the Business of Fitness Jennifer Smith Maguire, Leicester University, UK This is the first text to offer a comprehensive socio-cultural and historical analysis of the current fitness culture. Fitness today is not simply about health clubs and exercise classes, or measures of body mass index and cardiovascular endurance. Fit for Consumption conceptualizes fitness as a field within which individuals and institutions may negotiate - if not altogether reconcile - the competing and often conflicting social demands made on the individual body that characterize our current era.

Series: Sport in the Global Society

Intended for researchers and senior undergraduate and postgraduate students of sport, leisure, cultural studies and the body, this book utilizes the US fitness field as a case study through which to explore the place of the body in contemporary consumer culture. Combining observations in health clubs, interviews with fitness producers and consumers, and a discourse analysis of a wide variety of fitness texts, this book provides an empirically grounded examination of one of the pressing theoretical questions of our time: how individuals learn to fit into consumer culture and the service economy and how our bodies and selves become “fit for consumption.”

This volume comprises some of the finest contributions to Sports Studies, Sports Sciences and Physical Education by the distinguished Berkeley scholar, Professor Roberta J. Park. It is an invaluable source of her seminal writings, not available anywhere else.

Selected Contents: 1. Making Sense of Fitness 2. The Roots of Fitness: Physical Culture and Physical Capital 3. Health Clubs: The Stratification of Fitness Sites 4. This book gives an innovative and entirely new analysis of his later works making it a one-stop guide for students, exploring how Foucauldian theory can inform our understanding of the body, domination, identity and freedom as experienced through sport and exercise. Divided into three themed parts, this book considers:

The Routledge Critical Studies in Sport series aims to lead the way in developing the multi-disciplinary field of Sport Studies by producing books that are interrogative, interventionalist and innovative. • Foucault’s ideas and key debates • Foucault’s theories to explore power relations, the body, identity and the construction of social practices in sport and exercise • how individuals make sense of the social forces surrounding them, considering physical activity, fitness and sport practices as expressions of freedom and sites for social change. Accessible and clear, including useful case studies helping to bring the theory to real-life, Foucault, Sport and Exercise considers cultures and experiences in sports, exercise and fitness, coaching and health promotion. In addition to presenting established Foucauldian perspectives and debates, this text also provides innovative discussion of how Foucault’s later work can inform the study and understanding of sport and the physically active body. 2006: 234 x 156: 264pp Hb: 978-0-415-35862-0: $180.00 Pb: 978-0-415-35863-7: $49.95 eBook: 978-0-203-00650-4

Marxism, Cultural Studies and Sport

What can the history of a nation’s football reveal about that nation’s wider political and socio-cultural identity? How can the study of local football culture help us to understand the powerful international forces at play within the modern game? Based on long-term and detailed ethnographic research, this book uses Malta as a critical case study to explore the dynamics of contemporary football. Situated on the fringes of the EU, and with an appalling record in international competition, the Maltese are nevertheless fanatical about the game. This book examines Maltese football in the context of the island’s unique politics, culture and national identity, shedding light upon both Maltese society and on broader processes, both local and global, within the international game. The book explores a range of key issues in contemporary football, such as: • the dynamics of international player migration • football corruption and ethics

Edited by Ben Carrington, The University of Texas at Austin, USA and Ian McDonald, University of Brighton, UK Marxism, Cultural Studies and Sport brings together leading experts on sport to address these issues and to reflect on the continued appeal of sport to people across the globe, as well as on the forms of inequality that sport both produces and highlights. Including a Foreword by Harry Cleaver and Afterword by Michael Bérubé, this book assesses the impact of this work on the fields of “mainstream” Marxism and cultural studies. Marxism, Cultural Studies and Sport is centred on three vital questions: • is Marxism still relevant for understanding sport in the twenty-first century?

• the politics of sponsorship and TV deals

• has Marxism been preserved or transcended by cultural studies?

• the global appeal of footballing ’brands’ such as Manchester United, Juventus and Bayern Munich.

• what is the relationship between theory and intervention in the politics of sport?

This book is essential reading for students and researchers working in Sports Studies, Sociology of Sport, Football, Globalisation, Politics and Ethnic Studies.

The result is a unique and diverse examination of modern sports culture. The first book published on the relationship between sport and Marxism for over twenty years, Marxism, Cultural Studies and Sport is an invaluable resource for students of sport sociology, Marxism, and cultural studies at all levels.

Inside the Biggest Show on Television

Blowing the Whistle, Revisited

Andrew C. Billings, Clemson University, USA

Garry Whannel, University of Bedfordshire, UK

Located in the United States, NBC (National Broadcasting Company) is the biggest and most powerful Olympic network in the world, having won the rights to televise both the Summer and the Winter Olympic Games. By way of attracting more viewers of both sexes and all ages and ethnicities than any other sporting event, and through the production of breathtaking spectacles and absorbing stories, NBC’s Olympic telecasts have huge power and potential to shape viewer perceptions. Billings’s unique text examines the production, content, and potential effects of NBC’s Olympic telecasts. Interviews with key NBC Olympic producers and sportscasters (including NBC Universal Sports and Olympics President Dick Ebersol and primetime anchor Bob Costas) outline the inner workings of the NBC Olympic machine; content analyses from ten years of Olympic telecasts (1996-2006) examining the portrayal of nationality, gender, and ethnicity within NBC’s telecast; and survey analyses interrogate the extent to which NBC’s storytelling process affects viewer beliefs about identity issues. This mixed-method approach offers valuable insights into what Billings portrays as “the biggest show on television”. Selected Contents: 1. Investigating the Biggest Show on Television 2. ”Whannel is a foundational figure in the study of sports and the media. For twenty years his writing has set a high standard and it remains an inspiration to many” – Toby Miller, Professor of Cultural Studies, New York University, USA Garry Whannel’s text Blowing the Whistle: The Politics of Sport broke new ground when it was first published in 1983. Its polemical discussion brought sports as cultural politics into the academic arena and set the agenda for a new wave of researchers. Since the 1980s sport studies has matured both as an academic discipline and as a focus for mainstream political and public policy debate. In Culture, Politics and Sport: Blowing the Whistle, Revisited, Garry Whannel revisits the themes that led his first edition, assessing their 1980s context from our new millennium perspective, and exploring their continued relevance for contemporary sports academics. Physical Culture, Power, and the Body

Through an Anthropological Lens P. David Howe, Loughborough University, UK Do the Paralympic Games empower the disability sport community? Like many other contemporary sporting institutions, the Paralympic Games have made the transition from pastime to spectacle, and the profile of athletes with disabilities has been increased as a result. This book reviews the current status of the Paralympics and challenges the mainstream assumption that the Games are a vehicle for empowerment of the disabled community. Using ethnographic methods unique in this area of study, P. David Howe has undertaken an innovative and critical examination of the social, political and economic processes shaping the Paralympic Movement. In The Cultural Politics of the Paralympic Movement he presents his findings and offers a new insight into the relationship between sport, the body and the culture of disability. Edited by Jennifer Hargreaves, University of Brighton, UK and Patricia Vertinsky, University of British Columbia, Canada During the past decade, there has been an outpouring of books on “the body” in society, but none has focused as specifically on physical culture - that is, cultural practices such as sport and dance within which the moving physical body is central. Questions are raised about the character of the body, specifically the relation between the “natural” body, the “constructed” body and the “alien” or “virtual” body throughout the book. The themes of the book are wide in scope, including: • physical culture and the fascist body • sport and the racialised body • sport medicine, health and the culture of risk • the female Muslim sporting body, power, and politics • experiencing the disabled sporting body • embodied exhibitions of striptease and sport • the social logic of sparring • sport, girls and the neoliberal body. Physical Culture, Power, and the Body aims to break down disciplinary boundaries in its theoretical approaches and its readership. The author’s multi-disciplinary backgrounds, demonstrate the widespread topicality of physical culture and the body. 2006: 234 x 156: 280pp Hb: 978-0-415-36351-8: $180.00 Pb: 978-0-415-36352-5: $52.95 eBook: 978-0-203-01465-3

Why Sports Morally Matter

Consumption, Identity and Difference

William J. Morgan

Edited by Belinda Wheaton This collection of innovative studies represents the first serious academic investigation of the popularity, significance and meaning of “lifestyle” sports, such as snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing.

When we accept that advertisers and sponsors dictate athletic schedules, that success in sport is measured by revenue, that athletes’ loyalties lie with their commercial agents instead of teams and that game rules exist to be tested and broken in the pursuit of a win, what does our regard for sport say about the moral and political well-being of our society? Why Sports Morally Matter is a deeply critical examination of pressing ethical issues in sports – and in society as a whole. Exploring the broad historical context of modern America, William J. Morgan argues that the current state of sports is a powerful indictment of our wealth-driven society and hyperindividualistic way of life. Taking on critics from all sides of the political debate, Morgan makes the case that, despite the negating effect of free market values, sport still possesses important features that encourage social, moral and political values crucial to the flourishing of a democratic polity. It is this potential to transform society and the individual that makes sport a key battleground in the struggle for the moral soul of twentyfirst century America. 2006: 234 x 156: 272pp Hb: 978-0-415-35773-9: $170.00 Pb: 978-0-415-35774-6: $49.95

SPORT AND CULTURE

Football and Community in the Global Context Studies in Theory and Practice Edited by Adam Brown, Substance, UK, Tim Crabbe, Sheffield Hallam University, UK and Gavin Mellor, Substance, UK Series: Sport in the Global Society A “crisis of community” has emerged in many areas and many have sought to blame a variety of other “social issues” on the decline of community. Football clubs now embody many of the collective symbols, identifications and processes of connectivity which have long been associated with the notion of “community”.

Sport in Films Edited by Emma Poulton and Martin Roderick, both at University of Durham, UK Series: Sport in the Global Society Sport offers everything a good story should have: heroes and villains, triumph and disaster, achievement and despair, tension and drama. Consequently, sport makes for a compelling film narrative and films, in turn, are a vivid medium for sport. Yet despite its regularity as a central theme in motion pictures, constructions and representations of sport and athletes have been marginalised in terms of serious analysis within the longstanding academic study of films and documentaries.

This book was published as a special issue of Soccer and Society.

In this collection, it is the critical study of film and its connections to sport that are examined.

2008: 246 x 174: 158pp Hb: 978-0-415-44816-1: $140.00

The collection is one of the first of its kind to examine the ways in which sport has been used in films as a metaphor for other areas of social life.

The Economics of Sports Broadcasting Chris Gratton, Sheffield Hallam University, UK and Harry Arne Solberg, Sør-Trøndelag University College, Norway A long-term study providing rare insights into the precarious career and ordinary working culture of professional footballers. Away from the celebrity-obsessed media gaze, the work of a professional footballer is rarely glamorous and for most players a career in football is insecure and short-lived. A former professional, Martin Roderick’s familiarity with the world of football is the foundation for this privileged research into a world that is typically closed to the public gaze and ignored by media reportage and academic research which prefers to focus on a small, unrepresentative group of elite players. Key themes explored within the text include: • the culture of work in professional football • the changing identity, orientation and expectations of players during their careers • the fragile and uncertain nature of professional sport careers • the performance and dramatic aspects of a career under public scrutiny • the role of relationships with managers, owners, support staff and partners • players’ responses to the insecurities inherent in professional football such as injury, ageing, performance and transfer. The text deals with a wide range of issues of interest to sports students and academics, particularly those with a focus on the sociology of sport but also including sport development, sport management and coaching studies. The text will also be of interest to researchers in the fields of careers, industrial relations and the sociology of work. Selected Contents: 1. Introduction 2. Schoolteachers and the Spread of Association Football J.A. Mangan, Formerly at the University of Strathclyde, UK and Colm Hickey, St. Thomas More RC School, London, UK Series: Sport in the Global Society The role of teachers in association football is a much neglected aspect of English cultural history. It is a story that deserves to be told because it allows a fundamental reappraisal of the status and position of these teachers in late nineteenth century and early twentieth century society.

New Perspectives Edited by Zinon Papakonstantinou, University of Washington, USA From the early origins of the ancient Olympics to gladiatorial shows in late antiquity, the chapters, written by prominent scholars on ancient sport, provide original insights into key aspects of ancient sport in its historical, social and ideological setting. Media and the Creation of Babe Ruth Patrick Adam Trimble, Penn State University, USA Series: Studies in American Popular History and Culture Babe Ruth is among the most lasting of American icons. A baseball player who emerged from the sports pages of the Jazz Age, he has become one of the dominant symbols of traditional cultural values, nationalism, and masculine identity. His is a media persona that has changed drastically over the years and is one that allows each new generation of people discovering him to take what they need from the stories of the Babe and reinvent them for their own uses. Trimble carefully unpacks Ruth’s legacy, examining how mass communications, with the assistance of the political and economic systems that rely on that media, help to shape the evolution of Babe Ruth from his creation as a media icon in the 1920s to his continuing presence in the new millennium. Sport, Culture and History

Struggling to Play in Victorian Britain

Region, Nation and Globe

James Lee, Bucknell University, USA

Brian Stoddart, La Trobe University, Australia

Series: Sport in the Global Society

Series: Sport in the Global Society

This book tells the story of “the Lady Footballers”. It covers their 1895 and 1896 tours through the eyes of the largely unsympathetic British press and explains gender issues of the time, and the financial problems that doomed this experiment.

In addition to being an internationally recognised pioneer of sports history, Brian Stoddart has also been a leading thinker and influence in the field. That influence has crossed several areas of history, sociology, business, politics and media aspects of sports studies, and has drawn deeply upon his own training in Asian studies. His work has been characterised by cross-disciplinary work from the outset, and has encompassed some very different geographical areas as well as crossing from academic outlets to media commentary. As a result, his influential work has appeared in many different locations, and it has been difficult for a wide variety of readers to access it fully and easily. This volume draws together, in the one place for the first time, some of his most important academic and journalistic work. Importantly, the pieces are drawn together by an intellectual/autobiographical commentary that locates each piece in a wider social and cultural framework.

Jesse Owens, the Press, and the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games Pamela C. Laucella, Indiana University, USA Series: Studies in African American History and Culture Jesse Owens secured his place as one of the most celebrated athletes of the twentieth century after winning four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. This book examines the press coverage of the time, which helped to elevate Owens to such status. Laucella utilizes examples not just from the mainstream press, but also from the black and Communist press, and reveals critical differences in the tone, emphasis, and type of coverage. She offers exceptional insight into the potency of language and discourse in influencing readers’ perceptions of events and individuals and demonstrates how the press coverage of the 1930s continues to shape our understandings of Owens’ legacy. East Plays West Sport and the Cold War Edited by Stephen Wagg, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK and David Andrews, University of Maryland, USA The Cold War spanned some five decades from the devastation that remained after the Second World War until the fall of the Berlin wall, and for much of that time the perception was that only on the Eastern side were politics and sport inextricably linked. However, this assumption underestimates the extent to which sport was an important symbol for both power blocs in their ongoing ideological struggle. This collection of essays from leading international authorities on sport, culture and ideology brings together an impressive body of work organized around key political themes and outstanding moments in sport, and is at once a political history of sport and an illuminating new perspective on the forces that shaped this unsettled time. 2006: 234 x 156: 352pp Hb: 978-0-415-35926-9: $160.00 Pb: 978-0-415-35927-6: $49.95 eBook: 978-0-203-00711-2

Figurational Studies in the Development of Modern Sports

The Olympics

Edited by Eric Dunning, Dominic Malcolm and Ivan Waddington Sports Histories draws on figurational sociology to provide a fresh approach to analysing the development of modern sport. The book brings together ten case studies from a wide range of sports, including mainstream sports such as soccer, rugby, baseball, boxing and cricket, to other sports that until now have been largely neglected by sports historians, such as shooting, motor racing, tennis, gymnastics and martial arts. This groundbreaking work highlights key debates in the analysis of modern sport, such as: • the relative influence of intra-national class conflict and international conflict • the relative prominence of commercially led processes in different contexts

A Critical Reader Edited by Vassil Girginov, Brunel University, UK The Olympics: A Critical Reader represents a unique, critical guide to the definitive sporting mega-event. Combining classic texts and thoughtful editorial discussion with challenging new pieces, including previously unseen material from the IOC archive, the book systematically addresses the key themes in modern Olympism, including: • olympic ethics • the olympics and the media • managing and marketing the olympics • politicising the olympics • paralympic studies • cultural olympics • olympic education

• the centrality of concerns over violence

• olympic legacies

• differences between elite and mass-led sports developments.

• the future of the olympics.

Above all, Sport Histories proves the distinctiveness of the figurational sociological approach and its usefulness in the study of the development of modern sport. 2004: 234 x 156: 224pp Hb: 978-0-415-28665-7: $180.00 Pb: 978-0-415-39794-0: $47.95 eBook: 978-0-203-49743-2

The Paralympic Games Explained is the first complete and accessible introduction to the Paralympic phenomenon, exploring every key aspect and issue, from the history and development of the Paralympic movement to the economic and social impact of the contemporary Games. The book begins by introducing the three most important theoretical models of disability (medical, social and biosocial), to enable the reader to fully understand the Paralympics in the context of wider discussions of disability in society. It also offers a clear and straightforward explanation of the importance of language and terminology in shaping our understanding of disability and disability sport. This book explores how cultural policies are reflected in the design, management and promotion of the Olympic Games. Garcia examines the concept and evolution of cultural policies throughout the recent history of the Olympic Games and then specifically evaluates the cultural program of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Garcia argues that the cultural relevance of a major event is highly dependant on the consistency of the policy choices informing its cultural dimensions. She demonstrates how major events, such as the Olympic Games, frequently fail to leave long-term cultural legacies and are often unable to provide an experience that fully engages and represents the host community, due to their over-emphasis on an economic rather than a social and cultural agenda.

Beijing 2008: Preparing for Glory Chinese Challenge in the ’Chinese Century’ Edited by J.A. Mangan, Formerly at the University of Strathclyde, UK and Dong Jinxia, Beijing University, China Series: Sport in the Global Society Beijing 2008: Preparing for Glory - Chinese Challenge in the “Chinese Century” brings together international scholars with an interest in sport and politics and sinologists with an interest in China - past, present and future - to explore global reaction to the Beijing Olympics - China’s anticipated moment of glory on the world stage. From the moment of the birth of the “New China” sport has been viewed as a means of internal and external projection illustrating the capacity of the system and people to more than hold their own with those of other nations. In short, sport has been the chosen “stage” on which the Chinese perform in pursuit of world recognition, respect and esteem. This assertion is not hard to understand. China’s “century of humiliation” at the hands of first the West and then Japan remains a traumatic experience. Beijing 2008 is to assist the restoration of China’s national self-esteem. He Zhenliang, Chairman of the IOC Commission for the Culture of Olympic Education, has remarked pointedly that the most significant outcome of the Beijing Games will be the elevation of the self-confidence and sense of pride of the Chinese people.

In most accounts of Olympic history across the world, India’s Olympic journey is a mere footnote. This book is a corrective. Drawing on newly available and hitherto unused archival sources, it demonstrates that India was an important strategic outpost in the Olympic movement that started as a global phenomenon at the turn of the twentieth century. Among the questions the authors answer are: When and how did the Olympic ideology take root in India? Who were the early players and why did they appropriate Olympic sport to further their political ambitions? What explains India’s eight consecutive gold medals in Olympic men’s hockey between 1928 and 1956 and what altered the situation drastically, so much so that the team failed to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Games? India and the Olympics also explores why the Indian elite became obsessed with the Olympic ideal at the turn of the twentieth century and how this obsession relates to India’s quest for a national and international identity. It conclusively validates the contention that the essence of Olympism does not reside in medals won, records broken or television rights sold as ends in themselves. Particularly for India, the Olympic movement, including the relevant records and statistics, is important because it provides a unique prism to understand the complex evolution of modern Indian society. OLYMPICS AND PARALYMPICS The 1940 Tokyo Games: The Missing Olympics

Crafting Patriotism for Global Dominance

Japan, the Asian Olympics and the Olympic Movement

America at the Olympics

Sandra Collins, San Francisco State University, USA

Series: Sport in the Global Society

Series: Sport in the Global Society By representing their experience of modernity as different from the West in their respective Olympic Games, Asian nations reveal much about the ambitions and anxieties of being an Asian host in the continuing western Olympic hegemony. This original work explores the encounter between “the East and the West” by analyzing the deliberate self-presentational cultural diplomacy historically required of Asian Olympic hosts. Exploring the relationship between Modern Asia and the Olympic Games, it focuses on the forgotten history of the 1940 Tokyo Olympics to reveal the complex and fascinating encounter between Japan and the world in the 1930s. The book is the first full account of this encounter and draws substantially on Japanese sources hitherto unknown in the English-speaking world. It argues that this encounter sets the scene and the tone for later Asian involvement in the Olympic Movement. This work fills a gap in the literature, and provides an original addition to the history of Japanese culture, Asian cultures and the Olympic Movement. Mark Dyreson, Pennsylvania State University, USA For more than a century the USA has used the Olympic Games to construct national identity, create communal memory, and craft patriotic mythology. From opening parades where the American team refuses to dip its flag in order to signal American exceptionalism to the closing ceremonies where the U.S. media trumpet that their team owes its medals not to superior athleticism but to the nation’s peerless social and political systems, Olympic Games have served as sites to bolster American nationalism. More than any other nation, the United States has politicized its Olympic participation. In the process a host of myths about American superiority in global encounters has emerged through the Olympics. In memorializing and mythologizing their Olympic teams Americans have revealed the contours of the racial, gender, and class dynamics that animate their peculiar nationhood. These essays explore the history of expressions of American national identity in Olympic arenas. Olympic Cities provides the first full overview of the changing relationship between cities and the Olympic events since 1896. With eighteen specially commissioned and original essays written by a team of distinguished authors from the UK and overseas, it explores the historical experience of staging the Olympics from the point of view of the host city. A thought-provoking analysis of the relationship between Olympic festivals and urban spectacle it: • provides overviews of the urban impact of the four component Olympic festivals – the Summer Games, Winter Games, Cultural Olympiads and the Paralympics • comprises systematic surveys of four key aspects of activity involved in staging the Olympics – finance, place promotion, managing spectacle and urban regeneration • consists of nine chronologically arranged portraits of host cities, from 1936 to 2012, with particular emphasis on the first four Summer Olympic games of the twenty-first century. As controversy over the growing size and expense of the Olympics continues unabated, this book’s incisive and timely assessment of the Games’ development and the complex agendas that host cities attach to the event will be essential reading not only for urban and sports historians, urban geographers, planners and all concerned with understanding the relationship between cities and culture, but for anyone with an interest in the staging of mega-events.

TEXTBOOK

An Introduction

As the role of sport in society becomes better understood, the need to have effective sports development programmes has emerged as a central concern for government and local authority administration. Pro-social sports development policies are now devised and implemented all over the world. Sport, Policy and Development introduces the key themes in sport and social policy and provides students with a base for understanding the process of social policy creation more generally. Adopting a distinctive critical sociological perspective, the book offers a comprehensive analysis of the ways in which sports policies are thought to influence society, including close discussion of: • the social policy process • sport and health promotion • “sport for all” and social inclusion • youth sport, PE and school sport • elite sport development. Accessible and engaging, and including examples of policy and practice from the UK, the US and around the world, this textbook is a clear and concise introduction to sports policy and development for students, practitioners and policymakers alike. A Wider Social Role for Sport Who’s Keeping the Score?

Examining Sports Development Edited by Mike F. Collins, University of Gloucestershire, UK Sports development takes place in continually evolving and expanding territory. If new policies are to be implemented effectively, it is vital to understand how development policy translates into the real world. Until now no single text has examined how sports development policies are implemented and experienced “at the coal face” of community and performance sport. As well as critical analysis of models and concepts in sports development, Examining Sports Development presents original case studies from practising sports development professionals working in a variety of areas, including: • national and regional policy • school sport • talent identification and development • sports club development • coach development • sport and social inclusion • sports and crime prevention • sports and health promotion. Sports development is evolving as a profession, especially in matters of education and training. This book encourages critical reflection, pointing the way to accountable policymaking and a long-term future for sports development professionals. It is essential reading for all students and practitioners working in sports development. Fred Coalter, Stirling University, UK Sport is perceived to have the potential to alleviate a variety of social problems and generally to “improve” both individuals and the communities in which they live. Sport is promoted as a relatively cost effective antidote to a range of social problems – often those stemming from social exclusion including poor health, high crime levels, drug abuse and persistent youth offending, educational underachievement, lack of social cohesion and community identity and economic decline. To this end, there is increasing governmental interest in what has become known as “sport for good”. A Wider Social Role for Sport presents the political and historical context for this increased government interest in sport’s potential contribution to a range of social problems. The book explores the particular social problems that governments seek to address through sport, and examines the nature and extent of the evidence for sport’s positive role. It illustrates that, in an era of evidence-based policy-making, the cumulative evidence base for many of these claims is relatively weak, in part because such research is faced with substantial methodological problems in isolating the precise contribution of sport in many contexts. Drawing on worldwide research, A Wider Social Role for Sport explores the current state of knowledge and understanding of the presumed impacts of sport and suggests that we need to adopt a different approach to research and evaluation if sports researchers are to develop their understanding and make a substantial contribution to sports policy.. 2007: 234 x 156: 216pp Hb: 978-0-415-36349-5: $160.00 Pb: 978-0-415-36350-1: $49.95 eBook: 978-0-203-01461-5

TEXTBOOK

John H. Kerr, Kokushikan University, Japan, Koenraad J. Lindner and Michelle Blaydon

2ND EDITION

Physical Activity and Health The Evidence Explained Adrianne Hardman and David Stensel, both at Loughborough University, UK Physical Activity and Health explains clearly, systematically and in detail the relationships between physical activity, health and disease, and examines the benefits of exercise in the prevention and treatment of a wide range of important conditions. Now in a fully updated and revised edition, and still the most complete and engaging textbook on this important subject, Physical Activity and Health offers a balanced examination of the very latest evidence linking levels of physical activity with disease and mortality. It offers a wideranging assessment of the importance of inactivity as a factor in major diseases and health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer and osteoporosis. The book is designed to help the reader evaluate the quality and significance of the scientific evidence, and includes an invaluable discussion of common study designs and the inherent difficulties of measuring physical activity. It also explores the full range of contemporary themes in the study of exercise and health, such as the hazards of exercise; exercise and the elderly; children’s health and exercise, and physical activity and public health policy, and a critical appraisal of current recommendations for physical activity. Containing useful features throughout, such as chapter summaries, study tasks, guides to supplementary reading and definitions of key terms, and richly illustrated with supporting tables, figures and plates, Physical Activity and Health is an essential course text. Now supported by a companion website featuring self-test questions, Powerpoint slides for lecturers, additional learning activites and web links, this book is vital reading for degree-level students of sport and exercise science, public health, physical therapy, medicine and nursing.

Exercise dependence or addiction has been described as a “positive addiction”, but it can have links with damaging dysfunctional and excessive behaviours, including eating disorders. Clinical and sport psychologists now acknowledge the condition and report that it can be found in recreational exercisers and competitive athletes. This is the first text to provide a comprehensive guide to exercise dependence. The text contains case studies and reviews research into exercise dependence in both “exercise” and “sports” contexts. The authors examine the condition in the widest sense, exploring different types of exercise dependence, risk factors associated with the condition, the experiences and motivational characteristics of sufferers, links with eating disorders, and a number of approaches to counselling. This text will be of significant interest to psychologists working in sport, health and clinical practice, as well as to athletes and sports coaches, particularly those involved in endurance sports associated with higher incidences of exercise dependence. Selected Contents: 1. Over the Top: An Introduction to Exercise Dependence 2. A Foundation for Understanding: Theoretical Approaches to the Study of Dependencies 3. Feel the Buzz: The Positive Psychological Pay-Off from Exercise 4. Driven to be Thin: Eating Disorders and How They Develop 5. Getting Thin to Win: Athletes Eating Disorders and Exercise Dependence 6. Hooked on Exercise: Personality and Motivation in Primary and Secondary Exercise Dependence 7. ’Can’t do Without my Exercise’: What Exercise Dependent People say about Themselves and their Dependency 8. INTERNATIONAL STUDIES IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND YOUTH SPORT

International Studies in Physical Education and Youth Sport Series Edited by Richard Bailey, University of Birmingham, UK

FORTHCOMING

Muslim Women and Sport Edited by Tansin Benn, University of Birmingham, UK, Gertrud Pfister, University of Copenhagen, Denmark and Haifaa Jawad, University of Birmingham, UK

Routledge’s International Studies in Physical Education and Youth Sport series aims to stimulate discussion on the theory and practice of school physical education, youth sport, childhood physical activity and well-being. By drawing on international perspectives, both in terms of the background of the contributors and the selection of the subject matter, the series seeks to make a distinctive contribution to our understanding of issues that continue to attract attention from policy makers, academics and practitioners.

The book presents an overview of current research into women in Islam and looks closely at what Islam has to say about sporting participation in general. It explores the challenges and opportunities for women in sport in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries, and presents a series of extensive international case-studies and cross-cultural comparisons, including material on Iraq, Palestine and postwar Bosnia. The book also makes important recommendations for improving access to sport for this historically marginalised group.

The Pedagogy of Human Movement

Prevention, Treatment and Management of Childhood and Adolescent Obesity

Richard Tinning, University of Queensland, Australia This book explores pedagogy and its application and meanings within the full range of human movement studies, including physical education, exercise and sports science, sports sociology and cultural studies, kinesiology, health promotion, human performance and dance. Each of these fields contains a myriad of sub-disciplines – from sports history to dance theory to motor control – all of which have established institutional practices and forms of pedagogy employed to (re)produce valued knowledge about human movement. The Pedagogy of Human Movement examines the epistemological assumptions underlying each of these pedagogical systems and their successes and limitations as ways of (re)producing knowledge within these fields. It also considers how the pedagogical discourses and devices employed influence the ways of thinking, practice, dispositions and identities (subjectivities) of those who work in the fields of sport, exercise and other human movement fields. INTERNATIONAL STUDIES IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND YOUTH SPORT NEW

Rethinking Gender and Youth Sport

AVAILABLE AS A COMPLIMENTARY COPY

Edited by Ian Wellard, Canterbury Christchurch University, UK

Disability and Youth Sport Edited by Hayley Fitzgerald, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK How can or does youth sport reconcile what seems to be a fundamental contradiction between understandings of sport and disability? Has youth sport been challenged in anyway? Have alternative views of sport for disabled people been presented? Examining some of the latest research, this book considers the relationship between sport and disability by exploring a range of questions such as these. Disability and Youth Sport further challenges current thinking and therefore serves to stimulate progressive debate in this area. Drawing on a breadth of literature from sports pedagogy, sociology of sport, disability studies, inclusive education, and adapted physical activity, a socially critical dialogue is developed where the voices of young disabled people are central. Topics covered include:

Series: International Studies in Physical Education and Youth Sport Much writing on gender and sport is focused upon the negative impact of girls’ exclusion from the arena, suggesting by inference that current practice in sport and physical education offers an uncomplicatedly positive sport experience for boys, and that gender, in and of itself, offers a simple starting point for research into young people’s experience of sport. Rethinking Gender and Youth Sport articulates certain themes which, it is suggested, might contribute to broadening and furthering discussion in the area of gender, youth sport and physical activity. This collection considers a number of themes relating to gender in sport, including: • the body • competence, ability and school physical education • cultural change and diversity

• researching disability and youth sport

• gendered spaces

• inclusion policy towards physical education and youth sport

• human rights and well-being.

• constructions of disability through youth sport

Authoritative writers have contributed thought provoking chapters which will prompt the reader to re-think the ways in which gender is understood within the context of youth sport.

• the voices of young disabled people • the historical context of disability sport. With its comprehensive coverage and expert contributors from around the globe, this book is an ideal text for students at all levels with an interest in youth sport, disability studies, or sport policy.

Philosophical Perspectives on Gender in Sports Edited by Charlene Weaving, St Francis Xavier University, Canada and Paul Davis, University of Edinburgh, UK This book draws together philosophically significant essays in the area of sex and gender in sport. While much has been written from a sociological and cultural studies perspective on the subjects of sex and gender in sport, this collection represents the first genuinely philosophically motivated anthology of essays on the subject. The collection covers five major themes: • sport and the construction of the female • objectification and the sexualisation of sport • sex boundaries: obstruction, naturalisation and opposition • homophobia • sex, gender and the practice of sport. With contributions from many of the world’s leading scholars in this area, this book is essential reading for anybody with an interest in sport and its relationships to gender, philosophy or culture. Sports, Virtues and Vices Morality Plays Mike J. McNamee, University of Wales Swansea, UK Sports have long played an important role in society. By exploring the evolving link between sporting behaviour and the prevailing ethics of the time this comprehensive and wide-ranging study illuminates our understanding of the wider social significance of sport. The primary aim of Sports, Virtues and Vices is to situate ethics at the heart of sports via “virtue ethical” considerations that can be traced back to the gymnasia of ancient Greece. The central theme running through the book is that sports are effectively modern morality plays: universal practices of moral education for the masses and - when coached, officiated and played properly - a valuable vehicle for ethical development. Including a wealth of contemporary sporting examples, the book explores key ethical issues such as: • how the pursuit of sporting excellence can lead to harm • doping, greed and shame • biomedical technology as a challenge to the virtue of elite athletes • defining a ‘virtue ethical account’ in sport • family vices and virtues in sport. Written by one of the world’s foremost sports philosophers, this book powerfully unites the fields of sports ethics and medical ethics. It is essential reading for all students and scholars with an interest in the ethics and philosophy of sport. 2008: 234 x 156: 248pp Hb: 978-0-415-19408-2: $170.00 Pb: 978-0-415-19409-9: $47.95 eBook: 978-0-203-09010-7

PHILOSPHY AND THE ETHICS OF SPORTS The Legality of Boxing

Doping in Sport

A Punch Drunk Love?

Global Ethical Issues

Jack Anderson, Queen’s University Belfast, UK

Edited by Angela J. Schneider, The University of Western Ontario, Canada and Fan Hong, University College Cork, Ireland

Series: Birkbeck The first book of its kind dedicated to an assessment of the legality of boxing, The Legality of Boxing: A Punch Drunk Love? assesses the legal response to prize fighting and undertakes a current analysis of the status of boxing in both criminal legal theory and practice. In this book, Anderson exposes boxing’s “exemption” from contemporary legal and social norms. Reviewing all aspects of boxing - historical, legal, moral, ethical, philosophical, medical, racial and regulatory - he concludes that the supposition that boxing has a (consensual) immunity from the ordinary law of violence, based primarily on its social utility as a recognised sport, is not as robust as is usually assumed.

39

Series: Sport in the Global Society This book considers ethical arguments about performance enhancing drugs in sport in a global context. It examines: • the forces that are bringing about the debate of ethical issues in performance enhancing drugs in sport • the sources of ethical debates in different continents and countries • the variation of ethical arguments in different cultural, political, ideological and sports systems.

It: • suggests that the sport is extremely vulnerable to prosecution and might in fact already be illegal under English criminal law • outlines the physical and financial exploitation suffered by individual boxers both inside and outside the ring, suggesting that standard boxing contracts are coercive thus illegal and that boxers do not give adequate levels of informed consent to participate • advocates a number of fundamental reforms, including possibly that the sport will have to consider banning blows to the head • proposes the creation of a national boxing commission in the US and a similar entity in the United Kingdom, which together would attempt to restore the credibility of a sport long know as the red-light district of sports administration.

While there has been a significant body of work that has looked at the importance of ethical issues in performance enhancing drugs in sport - there has been little, if any, consideration of the various ethical concepts in different countries and cultures involving sport. This is a major omission. This book fills the gap and provides a thorough review and analysis of the ethical literature on performance enhancing drugs in sport in the global society. It makes a major contribution to the worldwide anti-doping campaign in sport. This volume was previously published as a special issue of the journal Sport In Global Society. 2007: 246 x 174: 224pp Hb: 978-0-415-34832-4: $170.00 Pb: 978-0-415-35223-9: $49.95

Ethics, Knowledge and Truth in Sports Research

An Epistemology of Sport

The Ethics of Doping and Anti-Doping To Redeem the Soul of Sport

Graham McFee, University of Brighton, UK The study of sport is characterised by its inter-disciplinarity, with researchers drawing on apparently incompatible research traditions and ethical benchmarks in the natural sciences and the social sciences, depending on their area of specialisation. In this groundbreaking study, Graham McFee argues that sound high-level research into sport requires a sound rationale for one’s methodological choices, and that such a rationale requires an understanding of the connection between the practicalities of researching sport and the philosophical assumptions which underpin them. By examining touchstone principles in research methodology, such as the contested “gold standard” of voluntary informed consent in the natural sciences and the postmodern denial of “truth” in the social sciences, McFee demonstrates that epistemology and ethics are inextricably linked. Drawing on a wide range of examples, from the laboratory to the sports field, McFee explores the concepts of “knowledge” and “truth” in sports research and makes a powerful case for a philosophical deepening of our approach to method and methodology in sport. This book is important reading for all advanced students and researchers working in sport, exercise and related disciplines.

Verner Moller, University of Aarhus, Denmark With every positive drugs test the credibility and veracity of modern elite sport is diminished. In this radical and provocative critique of current anti-doping policy and practice, Verner Moller argues that the fight against doping promoted as an initiative to cleanse sport of cheats - is at heart nothing less than a battle to save sport from itself, located on the fault-line between the will to purity and the will to win. Written in a lively and engaging style, and skilfully blending empirical case studies with cutting edge theory, this book represents an important statement on the nature of sport, morality and modernity. It is important reading for all serious students and scholars of the ethics, sociology and politics of sport. Simona Giordano, University of Manchester, UK

An Ethical and Legal Analysis

Watching Sport Aesthetics, Ethics and Emotion for the Spectator Stephen Mumford, University of Nottingham, UK Delving into parallels with art and theatre in terms of a release from the self, this book outlines the aesthetic qualities of sport from the incidental beauty of a wellexecuted football pass to the enshrined artistic interpretation inherent in performed sports such as ice-skating or gymnastics. We then move on to consider the moral lessons to be learned from watching competitive sport, looking at the rewards of endeavour and the penalties of cheating and how these apply to a wider approach to life. Finally, sport is recognized as a focus of profound emotional experiences, bringing an essential human touch into a theoretical and academic forum of debate. With such universal themes, this book will appeal to a broad audience across philosophical disciplines and sports studies.

Eating disorders (EDs) have become a social epidemic in the developed world. This book addresses the close links between EDs and exercise, helping us to understand why the “typical” person with an ED exercises to excessive, often harmful, levels. This is also the first book to examine this issue from an ethical and legal perspective, identifying the rights and responsibilities of people with EDs, their families, and the fitness professionals and clinicians that work with them. Exercise and Eating Disorders is important reading for students of applied ethics, medical ethics, and the ethics of sport, as well as for fitness professionals, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, sports coaches, and sport and exercise scientists looking to better understand this important issue.
