Corporate Governance The Corporate Social Responsibility Reader Edited by Jon Burchell, University of Sheffield, UK In the age of global capitalism, shareholders, and profits are not the only concerns of modern business corporations. Debates surrounding economic and environmental sustainability, and increasing intense media scrutiny, mean that businesses have to show ethical responsibility to stakeholders beyond the boardroom. A commitment to corporate social responsibility may help the wider community. It could also protect an organization’s brand and reputation. Including key articles and original perspectives from academics, NGOs and companies themselves, The Corporate Social Responsibility Reader is a welcome and insightful introduction to the important issues and themes of this growing field of study. This book addresses:

Corporate Social Responsibility Readings and Cases in a Global Context Edited by Andrew Crane, University of Nottingham, UK, Dirk Matten, University of London, UK and Laura Spence, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK Modern business is obliged to meet increasingly demanding ethical, environmental, legal, commercial, and public standards as defined by wider society. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has therefore become an important consideration for managers at all levels, as well as one of the most vibrant areas of study and research in the field of business and management. This important new book provides a comprehensive and student-centred introduction to the key themes and issues currently being addressed in CSR around the world. This book brings together material by the most influential teachers and scholars working in CSR today, as well as many of the most cited and important articles, and is clearly structured in three parts: • understanding CSR

• the changing relationships between business, state and civil society

• applying CSR

• the challenges to business practice

Each section includes an extensive and accessible editorial commentary that introduces the key debates and themes contained in the articles, as well as clearly defined learning objectives to guide the reader and challenging and thought-provoking study questions to consolidate learning. It also includes three major case studies to enable the reader to relate theory to the real world, focusing on Nike in Asia, Vodafone in South Africa, and ABN AMRO in Brazil. Drawing on examples and issues from across the globe, this book is essential reading for all students and managers with an interest in corporate governance and business ethics.

• what businesses should be responsible for, and why • issues of engagement, transparency, and honesty • the boundaries of CSR – can businesses ever be responsible? Case studies examine major international corporations like Coca Cola and Starbucks, while broader articles discuss thematic trends and issues within the field. This comprehensive but eclectic collection provides a wonderful overview of CSR and its place within the contemporary social and economic landscape. It is essential reading for anyone studying business and management, and its ethical dimensions. Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia Edited by Kyoko Fukukawa, University of Bradford, UK Series: Routledge International Business in Asia Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an important issue in contemporary business, management and politics, especially since the launch of the United Nations Global Compact in 2000 as an initiative to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on them. This book examines the theory and practice of CSR in Asia. The philosophical and ideological underpinnings of CSR are rooted in Anglo-American and European principles of liberal democratic rights, justice and societal structures. This book not only considers the impact of Western CSR practices in Asia, but also provides much needed Asian perspectives on this issue. It investigates the operation of CSR in different countries across Asia, including China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Bangladesh – comparing the different meanings given to CSR, and the varying degrees of success experienced in different national contexts. This book argues if CSR is ever to revolutionize the manner in which we trade then it is needs to open itself up to the full variety of social responsibility as it occurs around the world. The book re-maps and refines debates about CSR as a global phenomenon, and will be of great value to professionals making strategic decisions in the global business environment. European Corporate Governance Readings and Perspectives

Series: Routledge Contemporary Corporate Governance

Edited by Thomas Clarke University of Technology, Australia and Jean-Francois Chanlat, University of Paris IX Dauphine, France

FORTHCOMING IN 2010

For decades, Europe has sought to become more financially integrated with the United States and thus European legal institutions, regulatory, governance, and accounting practices have faced pressures to adapt to international competitive markets. Against this backdrop, European corporate governance systems have been criticized as being less efficient than the Anglo-American market based systems.

Integrating Corporate, Program and Project Governance

This textbook examines the unique dimensions and qualities of European corporate governance. Reforms of key institutions, the doctrine of shareholder value and the seemingly irresistible growth of CEO power and reward are critically analyzed. This book brings out the richness of European corporate governance systems, as well as highlighting historical weaknesses that will require further work for a sustainable corporate governance environment in the future. In light of the most severe financial crisis since the 1930s, this intelligent look at European corporate governance is a vital textbook for courses on corporate governance and a great supplementary textbook on a host of business, management and accounting classes. Selected Contents: Introduction: Regime Change? Part 1: Convergence or Diversity?: A European Perspective on Corporate Governance Part 2: The Impact of Shareholder Value Part 3: CEO Power and Reward Part 4: Corporate Governance Industry Analysis Part 5: Corporate Governance and Transitional Economies June 2009: 7-1/2 x 9-3/4: 424pp Hb: 978-0-415-40533-1: $180.00 Pb: 978-0-415-40534-8: $61.95 eBook: 978-0-203-87589-6 For more information and to request a complimentary copy, visit: www.routledge.com/9780415405348

Project Governance Edited by Lynn Crawford, University of Technology, Australia Christophe Bredillet and Rodney J. Turner, both at ESC Lille, France Corporate governance has come under intense scrutiny in recent years, following numerous high profile corporate collapses. Shareholders and other stakeholders are demanding increased accountability, transparency, and ability to implement strategy. As projects and programs are the vehicles for delivery of corporate strategies, project governance, within the corporate governance framework, has become a hot topic in organizations. In the last year or so, project and program governance have become widely used terms in organizations and have been used in titles for several conferences, but there has till now, been no publication that has clearly presented project and program governance concepts and their application in practice. This book meets the needs of researchers, teachers of project management and practitioners while also responding to the needs of senior managers, project and program managers in organizations tasked with establishing project governance frameworks. It presents a clear view of what constitutes project governance, how it relates to corporate governance and how it can be deployed in organizations to enhance corporate performance. New Game Strategies for Competitive Advantage

Socially Responsible Investing

Social Entrepreneurship

Donald Schepers, City University of New York, USA

How to Start Successful Corporate Social Responsibility and Community-Based Initiatives for Advocacy and Change

Allan Afuah, University of Michigan, USA In today’s fast-changing business environment, those firms that want to remain competitive must also be innovative. Innovation is not simply developing new technologies into new products or services, but in many cases finding new models for doing business in the face of change. It often entails changing the rules of the game. From the late 1990s to today, the dominant themes in the strategy literature have been strategic innovation, the impact of information and communications technologies on commerce, and globalization. The primary issues have been and continue to be how to gain a competitive advantage through strategic innovation (what Allan Afuah calls ”new game strategy”), and how to compete in a world with rapid technological change and increasing globalization. Strategic Innovation demonstrates to students how to create and appropriate value using these ”new game” strategies. Beginning with a summary of the major strategic frameworks showing the origins of strategic innovation, Afuah gives a thorough examination of contemporary strategy from an innovation standpoint with several key advantages: • focus on developing strategy in the face of change • rich in quantitative examples of successful strategies, as well as descriptive cases • emphasis on the analysis of strategy, not just descriptions of strategies • a detailed, change-inclusive framework for assessing the profitability potential of a strategy or product, the AVAC (activities, value, appropriability, and change) model • emphasis on the aspects of strategy that can be linked to the determinants of profitability • consideration of how both for-profit and non-profit organizations can benefit from new game strategies.

Of increasing importance in the last decade, socially responsible investing (SRI) can be described as the important financial aspect of the broader corporate social responsibility (CSR) area. In both Europe and the US pressure is being exerted not only from individual investors, but increasingly by government and policy-making bodies for corporations to report on not just their financial performance but also their performance from a social, ethical, and environmental perspective (the triple bottom line).

What motivates someone to become a social entrepreneur? What are the competencies needed to be effective social advocates and agents for change? This book answers these questions in an accessible and practical way, providing comprehensive guidelines, numerous examples, and sources of information and training for anyone who wants to start a communitybased social advocacy and change initiative or for employees who want to start a corporate social responsibility initiative.

• investigate their role in the CSR debate

Features include the following:

• examine their efforts to improve communities through community-based investing practices.

• examples of individuals and organizations who have learned from successes and failures in social entrepreneurship

With the increase in the number of courses on CSR, SRI is becoming increasingly important in its attempts to measure and influence corporate policy and behavior. As a result there is an increased need for a book which examines the developments in socially responsible investing not simply from an investor’s point of view but from a broader academic perspective. This unique book singles out and critically examines the mutual funds which constitute the financial aspect of CSR. It goes on to:

Handbook of Social Entrepreneurship Edited by William D. Schulte, Jr., Shenandoah Univerisity, USA and Ana Maria Peredo, University of Victoria, Canada Social entrepreneurship (SE) in its many forms – whether it be the use of entrepreneurial strategies and techniques to develop and manage organizations with social and community aims, or operating for-profit enterprises that have as their mission community betterment and concern for global well-being – has captured the interest and imaginations of scholars, practitioners, governments, and the general public since the early 1990s. The sharp increases in academic research and university courses in SE and funding for social entrepreneurs has left scholars, students, and practitioners hungry for quality resources on the topic. Representing the first comprehensive survey of the emerging field of social entrepreneurship, this edited volume will disseminate the numerous streams of research and theory in social and sustainable entrepreneurship to educators, libraries, scholars, non-profit researchers, public policy makers, practitioners, graduate students, and any organization or person interested in staying abreast of advances in this area. Quality care of patients requires evaluating large amounts of data at the right time and place and in the correct context. With the advent of electronic health records, data warehouses now provide information at the point of care and facilitate a continuous learning environment in which lessons learned can provide updates to clinical, administrative, and financial processes. Given the advancement of the information tools and techniques of today’s knowledge economy, utilizing these resources are imperative for effective healthcare. Thus, the principles of Knowledge Management (KM) are now essential for quality healthcare management. The Healthcare Knowledge Management Primer explores and explains essential KM principles in healthcare settings in an introductory and easy to understand fashion. This concise book is ideal for both students and professionals who need to learn more about key aspects of the KM field as it pertains to effecting superior healthcare delivery. It provides readers with an understanding of approaches to KM by examining the purpose and nature of its key components and demystifies the KM field by explaining in an accessible manner the key concepts of KM tools, strategies and techniques, and their benefits to contemporary healthcare organizations. The discipline of Knowledge Management (KM) is rapidly becoming established as an essential course or module in both information systems and management programs around the world. Many KM texts pitch theoretical issues at too technical or high a level, or presenting a only a theoretical prescriptive treatment of knowledge or KM modeling ”problems.” The Knowledge Management Primer provides students with an essential understanding of KM approaches by examining the purpose and nature of its key components. The book demystifies the KM field by explaining in a precise, accessible manner the key concepts of KM tools, strategies, and techniques, and their benefits to contemporary organizations. Readers will find this book filled with approaches to managing and developing KM that are underpinned by theory and research, are integrative in nature, and address ”softer” approaches in manifesting and recognizing knowledge. Systems Practice in the Information Society José-Rodrigo and Córdoba-Pachón, University of Hull, UK As a collection of ideas and methodologies, systems thinking has made an impact in organizations and in particular in the information systems field. However, this main emphasis on organizations limits the scope of systems thinking and practice. There is a need first to use systems thinking in addressing societal problems, and second to enable people involved in developing the information society to reflect on the impacts of systems and technologies in society as a whole. Thus, there are opportunities to review the scope and potential of systems thinking and practice to deal with information society-related issues. Systems Practice in the Information Society provides students of information systems as well as practicing IS managers with concepts and strategies to enable them to understand and use systems thinking methodologies and address challenges posed by the development of information-based societies. This book brings experiences, ideas, and applications of systemic thinking in designing and evaluating socio-technological initiatives. Using a number of cultural contexts, this book explores how organizations, including governments, can enable better access to information and communication technologies and improve the quality of life of individuals. Does IT matter? This book argues that even as IT hardware, software, data and associated processes are becoming more of a commodity, it has never been more important to manage IT as a strategic asset. However, managing IT as a strategic asset is notoriously difficult, as is studying the impact of IT on firm performance. This book sets out to identify, explain and critically evaluate current research in this area. Beginning with a thorough introduction to Schumpeterian economic theory the authors re-cast the pre-eminent theory in strategic management research (the Resource Based View) in the light of a Schumpeterian analysis and identify Dynamic Capabilities as an extension of, but also a radical departure from, RBV. The role of IT as an endogenous technology is discussed and it is argued that how we define IT determines not only how we study it but also how we use it and benefit from it. Selected Contents: 1. Building an Enterprise-Wide Business Continuity Program Kelley Okolita Step-By-Step Instruction on Developing and Implementing an Enterprise-Wide Business Continuity Program If you had to evacuate from your building right now and were told you couldn’t get back in for two weeks, would you know what to do to make sure your business continues to operate? Would your staff? Would every person who works for your organization? Increasing threats to business operations, both natural and man-made, mean a disaster could occur at any time. It is essential that corporations and institutions develop plans to ensure the preservation of business operations and the technology that supports them – should risks become reality. Building an Enterprise-Wide Business Continuity Program goes beyond theory to provide planners with actual tools needed to build a continuity program in any enterprise. Drawing on over two decades of experience creating continuity plans and exercising them in real recoveries – including 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina – Master Business Continuity Planner, Kelley Okolita, provides guidance on each step of the process, including how to validate the plan as well as time-tested tips for keeping the plan action-ready over the course of time. Disasters can happen anywhere, anytime, and for any number of reasons. However, by proactively planning for such events, smart leaders can prepare their organizations to minimize tragic consequences and readily restore order with confidence in the face of such adversity. Lean Management Principles for Information Technology

Oracle is the number one database engine in use today. The fact that it is the choice of military organizations and agencies around the world is part of the company’s legacy and is evident in the product. Oracle has more security-related functions, products, and tools than almost any other database engine. Unfortunately, the fact that these capabilities exist does not mean that they are used correctly or even used at all. In fact, most users are familiar with less than twenty percent of the security mechanisms within Oracle.

Among a long list of HOWTOs, readers will learn to:

• assess risks that may exist and determine how to address them • make use of advanced tools and options such as Advanced Security Options, Virtual Private Database, Audit Vault, and Database Vault. The text also provides an overview of cryptography, covering encryption and digital signatures and shows readers how Oracle Wallet Manager and orapki can be used to generate and manage certificates and other secrets. While the book’s seventeen chapters follow a logical order of implementation, each HOWTO can be referenced independently to meet a user’s immediate needs. Providing authoritative and succinct instructions highlighted by examples, this ultimate guide to security best practices for Oracle bridges the gap between those who install and configure security features and those who secure and audit them. Accounting and Finance Auditing, Trust and Governance Developing Regulation in Europe Edited by Reiner Quick, University of Darmstradt, Germany, Stuart Turley, Manchester Business School, UK and Marleen Willekens, University of Tilburg, the Netherlands The reputation of corporate reporting has been in crisis. Trust in the process of financial accounting and auditing has been undermined by a series of high profile scandals involving major corporations, including Enron, Parmalat, Ahold, and Worldcom. In response, regulators and practitioners world-wide have put forward a series of initiatives to repair the damage and restore faith in corporate governance. In this important book, the European Auditing Research Network analyzes how that response has developed in Europe, with particular emphasis on the field of auditing. Leading international academics review how regulation has been revised in specific European countries to help restore confidence in the contribution of auditing to corporate governance. Various themes are explored, including the growing trend of internationalization in regulation, ethics and auditing, professional liability, and professional education. Auditing, Trust and Governance is an invaluable volume for students, researchers and professionals working in the fields of auditing, accountancy and corporate governance, and provides a useful basis for further research on the effects of the increased regulation. Accounting in Politics Devolution and Democratic Accountability Edited by Mahmoud Ezzamel, Cardiff University, UK, Noel Hyndman, Queen’s University, Belfast, Åge Johnsen, Oslo University College, Norway and Irvine Lapsley, University of Edinburgh, UK This book looks at the effectiveness of the 1999 restructuring of the UK through the establishment of the Scottish Parliament and the Assemblies for Northern Ireland and Wales, considering the process of devolution and its consequences on the key mechanisms of accounting and democratic accountability. The focus is on the financial mechanisms for democratic accountability both in the UK and in international comparator countries (New Zealand, Norway, and the US). This book examines the turbulent pattern of relationships between central and devolved government and explores whether the present arrangements for devolution in the UK represent an end game, or whether they may be merely a stepping stone to a more fully fledged federal state. It is argued that the main thrust of many of the financial reforms in the UK has confounded, obfuscated, and complicated the desire for democratic accountability. Selected Contents: 1. The Routledge Companion to Accounting History

Personal Finance and Investments

5TH EDITION

Edited by John Richard Edwards and Stephen P. Walker, both at Cardiff University, UK

A Behavioural Finance Perspective

Maurice D. Levi, University of British Columbia, Canada

The Routledge Companion to Accounting History shows how the seemingly innocuous practice of accounting has pervaded human existence in fascinating ways at numerous times and places; from ancient civilisations to the modern day, and from the personal to the political. Placing the history of accounting in context with other fields of study, the collection gives invaluable insights to subjects such as the rise of capitalism, the control of labour, gender and family relationships, racial exploitation, the functioning of the state, and the pursuit of military conflict. An engaging and comprehensive overview also examining geographical differences, this Companion is split into key sections, which explore:

Keith Redhead, Coventry University, UK In this book, the author draws from finance, psychology, economics and other disciplines in business and the social sciences, recognising that personal finance and investments are subjects of study in their own right rather than merely branches of another discipline. Considerable attention is given to topics which are either ignored or given very little attention in other texts. These include:

• changing technologies used to represent financial and other data

• the psychology of investment decision-making

• historical development of accounting theory and practice

• property investment

• stock market bubbles and crashes

• accounting institutions and those who perform accounting

• the use of derivatives in investment management

• accountancy and the economy

More traditional subject areas are also thoroughly covered, including:

• accounting, society, and culture

• regulation of investments business.

• the role of accounting in the government, protection and financing of states.

• investment analysis

Including chapters on the important role played by accountancy in religious organizations, a review of how the discipline is portrayed in fine art and popular culture, and analysis of sharp practice and corporate scandals, The Routledge Companion to Accounting History has a breadth of coverage that is unmatched in this growing area of study. Bringing together leading writers in the field, this is an essential reference work for any student of accounting, business and management, and history.

• capital market theory

International Finance The fifth edition of Maurice D. Levi’s classic textbook has been updated to incorporate the massive changes in the world of international finance of the past few years. In particular, the emergence of new markets is given broad coverage – particularly the rise to financial prominence of China and India and other growth economies in Asia and elsewhere. Financialization At Work

Key Texts and Commentary

Targeting Terrorist Financing

Edited by Ismail Erturk, Julie Froud and Adam Leaver, all at Manchester Business School, UK, Sukhdev Johal, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK, and Karel Williams, University of Manchester, UK

International Cooperation and New Regimes

Crisis with US sub-prime mortgages, paralysis in global credit markets and the run on Northern Rock – all wake-up calls to the growing influence of finance and financial markets on the lives of ordinary people. Social scientists began debating financialization in the late 2000s much as they debated globalization in the 1990s, and this important book prepares the way by allowing readers to redefine financialization for themselves.

This book examines the dynamics of terrorist financing, including a discussion about the importance of money from both the terrorist and the counter-terrorist perspective.

The articles are grouped by discourse, covering not only inter-war liberal collectivism and current cultural economy, but also the agency theory of mainstream finance and political economy of various kinds. Helpful commentaries introduce each individual reading while section introductions analyze the assumptions, core propositions, achievements and limits in each distinct literature. This book will challenge readers to bring a new understanding to the financialization of present day capitalism. It is an invaluable resource for students and researchers from business and management, plus all the social sciences with interests in political and cultural economy. Arabinda Acharya Series: Contemporary Terrorism Studies

Targeting Terrorist Financing argues that it is not the institutions that have failed the war on terrorist financing; rather it is the states that have failed the institutions. The measures contemplated by the world community to interdict terrorists and their financial infrastructures are sufficient to debilitate the terrorists both militarily and financially. However, what has been increasingly lacking is political will among the states, and this has overwhelmed the spirit of cooperation in this very critical front against terrorism. This volume assesses the need for international cooperation and the role of institutions and regimes in targeting terrorist financing. After the 9/11 attacks, there was an expression of global willingness to target terrorism generally, and terrorist financing in particular. The institutional mechanisms that grew out of this are explored in detail here, with a critical examination of the progress made by the international community. The impact of these measures is considered with respect to changes in the nature of the terrorist threat, money confiscated, adoption of international conventions, and global standards by states, and levels of compliance, among others. This book will be of great interest to students of terrorism, international organizations, international security and IR in general. Improving Mathematics at Work The Case for Techno-Mathematical Literacies

Doctrine, Verity and Fable in Organizational and Social Sciences

Celia Hoyles, Richard Noss, Phillip Kent, and Arthur Bakker, all at Institute of Education, UK Series: Improving Learning What are the mathematical knowledge and skills that actually matter for the world of work today? Has technology reduced the necessary knowledge to the most basic arithmetic? Or has the era of globalised competition and customer-focus ushered in a new era where novel skills are required? If so, how can they be developed? This book argues that there has been a radical shift in the nature of mathematical skills required for work – a shift which has still not been fully recognized by either the formal education system or by employers and managers. People need mathematical knowledge and skills that are shaped in new ways by information technologies and situated in concrete work situations – what we term techno-mathematical literacies (TmL): for example, the need to be fluent in the language of mathematical inputs and outputs to technologies and to interpret and communicate them, rather than merely to be procedurally competent with calculations. Improving Mathematics at Work presents case studies in manufacturing and financial service sectors, and proven design principles for the successful implementation of learning interventions for TmL learning opportunities. These include vignettes that describe the co-design and evaluation with employer-partners of interactive computer tools and authentic learning activities. This book is required reading for trainers and managers in commerce and industry; teachers and lecturers of mathematics and technical subjects, especially in the Further Education field; for stakeholders and decisionmakers interested in evidence-based policy; and for academic researchers interested in the application of cultural-historical activity theory to the understanding of workplace knowledge. Selected Contents: Part 1: What is the Issue? 1. Introduction Part 2: What Does the Research Tell Us? 2. Manufacturing 1: Case Studies of Automated Manufacturing 3. Manufacturing 2: Car Industry 4.
