elcome! Did you know that The Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society (MRAS) has been in existence even longer than Alberta has been a province! At MRAS our heartbeat is the dedicated people who make us a success. To the event organizers, the market vendors, our MRAS members, our countless volunteers and dedicated sponsors, we thank you. We could not do what we do without YOU. We are always excited to see our User Groups at our facilites year round and those groups that take the time to give back when we need a hand. The season is full again and with many family oriented, agricultural related, community supported and heritage encompassing events.

Hope to see you at the Market and all the family fun events year round!

SPONSORSHIP

Sponsorship is what keeps our non-profit, Agricultural Society operational. It is the generous community members, neighbouring businesses, and corporate support from larger Alberta-based corporations that sustain us, all for growth, improvements, emergencies, and event support that allow us to continue to do what we do here at the Racetrack. We encourage everyone to visit our web page and view the sponsorship packages on each of our events to get involved and financially support our efforts. Thank you for your ongoing support so we can keep this facility a community hub and a fun place to experience our agricultural heritage.

In order to be an Alberta Approved Farmers’ Market, 80 per cent of our vendors must make, bake or grow their products. The remaining 20 per cent is to allow for BC fruit and other items that add to the market mix. Resale of product is not allowed.

36 Years of

FRESH FOOD FA M I LY F U N !

W

elcome to the 36th year of the Millarville Farmer’s Market We offer an immense Market with the freshest local produce and products for everyone. Not only is the journey to the market breathtaking the atmosphere here in the market place is matchless. Here you can get to know your makers, bakers and growers, and build relationships that will have you returning all summer long. We understand that tagging along with Mom and Dad can be downright boring for the young ones - we just had to change that! This year we are excited to introduce Market Buds. This children’s program will get your child engaged in the agriculture sector through play. There will be opportunities that entice them to have meaningful and educational conversation with our vendors who are delighted to share their experience. Thank you for your support and happy shopping!

Market Buds aims to provide a fun opportunity for children to engage in the local food system through conversations directly with farmers, educational and cooking activities, tastings, gardening, exercise classes as well as arts and crafts. In addition to participating in weekly activities, Market Bud participants receive tokens to spend at the market, allowing them to make their own shopping decisions. This is an effort to help communities engage younger customers in the Farmers’ Market experience through the Market Buds Children’s Program. routes media special publication

WORKING IN

STONE, WOOD

STEEL

By Veronica Kloiber

Photos by Marnie Burkhart

In a world filled with mass production and plastics, James Greisinger is an outlier, a man choosing to walk in our time, with a firm grip on a vanishing art.

A

s a craftsman and purveyor of a bygone skill, James is a blacksmith and also a man who knows his own worth. For more than two decades James has been learning, creating and teaching this old world craft. He’s made a living at it but not without breaking a sweat. “Doing this for 21 years my enthusiasm has remained.” James states with some surprise, adding with a wry grin creasing his face, “it’s a tough go.”

www.millarvilleracetrack.com

The tough go he describes is the difficulty of loving and making a living through an old-world craft.

10

James and his wife Cheryl have created businesses that are true outward expressions of their inner passions and beliefs. James manufactures intricate and solid functional art pieces through his business, Stone Wood and Steel, as well as teaching his craft. He is careful to not call it a trade, as nowhere in this country is blacksmithing still considered as such.

"People who seek me out are looking for something unique and time-honoured. They don’t get to do things with their hands anymore.” - James

“People are way more interested in having experiences than things,” explains Cheryl, on why they have built their lives around the sharing of age-old wisdom. “They don’t get to do things with their hands anymore,” adds James. To put his claim to words, James describes a class he held for a doctor. James’ classes aren’t just an afternoon lark. Each class is a full day in the forge with the focus on developing techniques and hand crafting ironwork to take home. They are a commitment on both the teacher and the student, and the cost reflects that.

But the story doesn’t end there. After a morning working in the forge, James and his doctor apprentice break for lunch, a lunch sourced from his wife’s side of the business, their own gardens. James then recounts how his apprentice is quiet and then says, “five hundred.” “I asked him five hundred what?” recalls James. “Five hundred dollars. That’s what I’d pay for what we are making.” Seeing James’ grin at recalling his one-time apprentice’s epiphany leaves no doubt this is what keeps his enthusiasm glowing. “I’ll get a client that gets it. My best compliment was tears and a hug,” he says, recalling a year-long job that made such an impression on both the maker and the purchaser he is still chuffed.

The doctor in James’ story purchased a private class through a silent auction. The day of the class James asked him what he would pay for the item they had decided to make - a fire poker. The doctor replied he didn’t know, maybe $25. This is where James pauses in his retelling of the story. He shakes his head. This is what he, and craftsmen like him, is up against. The ongoing challenge is getting people to understand the value of his skills that then translate into monetary value.

Cheryl is also a wealth of old-world knowledge. Her company, Forage and Farm is a diverse blend of garlic, gardening, growing and homesteading. She too shares her knowledge through hands-on classes and workshops.

FEA TU RE

The people who seek him out are looking for something unique and time-honoured. Be the piece large or small, James’ work is the icing on the cake, the dollop of cream in your coffee or the wax on the car. Life goes on without all of these things but why, when it’s so much better with them. “It’s the necklace that makes the dress,” and James makes that necklace. So what of the future of blacksmithing? James sees a resurgence in the craft, one he credits ta show on the History Channel, Forged in Fire. He tells of a 12-year-old he knows who built his own forge and is now happily fashioning his own knives. “Young kids are asking – “Are you quenching in oil?” I say how do you know that?” Jame is encouraged to see such enthusiasm for hand-crafted, hand-made quality items. If you ask our local blacksmith if he’s worried that more people practicing this fading art will make it harder for him to make a living - you’ll get an emphatic answer. “Competition? No way! We need more of us.”

Shop, take a class or hire James. Learn more about the craft and his art at www.stonewoodandsteel.ca More about Cheryl on page 13, see also garlic recipe on page 14, forageandfarm.com

The Garlic Queen Head and Cloves About the Rest By Veronica Kloiber

It’s not often I get to meet another queen, especially not in my own backyard.

M

y visit with Millarville’s own Garlic Queen, Cheryl Greisinger, was an auspicious event. In her front parlour we discussed the hardships and the joys of our respective realms and our wishes for the future.

The title of queen is of course a bit irreverent, but it has some truth to it. The Garlic Queen and I reign over our little kingdoms in prosperity and in lack. We want what is best for our realms, and we try our darndest to rule them with poise and aplomb just as a true queen would. The garlic empire is more than a grow and harvest operation, that’s just the half of it. The Garlic Queen, like an alchemist, turns plumb and pungent heads of garlic into fermented, smoky, molasses-like balls of pure deliciousness. Black garlic partners well with cheese, in a glaze over salmon and even in chocolate cake. While talking about food combinations, this got us thinking about melding our two queen-doms. A black garlic infused hand-cranked sausage born in the Millarville hills – the best of what our neighbouring realms have to offer. Perhaps these long summer days will provide us the occasion. From one queen to another - reign on.

BLUEROCK GALLERY Many small towns across southern Alberta seek to attract day-tripping tourists with a unique shopping experience. In the quaint and historic town of Black Diamond you will find many such shops. But one, Bluerock Gallery, is a beloved destination for one-of-a-kind fine art and craft. Meet the current owner and curator, Karen Gimbel. By Sandra Wiebe Photo by Gary Clennan

ROUTES: How did you come to own the gallery? KAREN: Well, I never imagined becoming a gallery owner. I’ve had a pretty diverse work history, everything from commercial salmon fishing in Alaska to CEO of the family business and a publicly traded company. Prior to taking on the gallery I had only a little bit of experience in retail at a small college bookstore. R: I’m not hearing much about art in your background? K: I was a late bloomer. In kindergarten I was traumatized by an insensitive teacher who ridiculed my art. I resolved to not let that happen to my own daughters, and in the process of encouraging them and their creative souls, I healed myself.

www.millarvilleracetrack.com

It wasn’t until I was in my 40s that I began making art and found the process both enlivening and essential. In order to clear up space and afford the art supplies to keep making art, I needed to move my pieces along. To my great surprise and delight I was selling them to friends, family members and in galleries.

20

R: How did your own art making and work life come together? K: In 2010 I got a call from the previous owner, Evonne Smulders of what was then Terra Cotta Gallery. When she called, out of the blue, my heart said “YES”! My husband, Chris Weingarth, concurred, and so we became partners in this business. It has been a truly extraordinary experience to land in Black Diamond as a gallery owner, and to be of service to artists and their need to move their work in order to keep creating more!

“Let the beauty we love, be what we do. There are a hundred ways to kneel and kiss the ground.” ~ Rumi

R: Who are the people who visit your gallery, and where do they come from? K: Once people experience the gallery and feel its resonance, they come back. People come from all over Alberta and BC and beyond. Many people who live in the region visit regularly – not only for the art, but also because of our extensive and eclectic book collection and our carefully selected greeting cards. So many of them make a point to come back and bring their family members and their out of province visitors. People also combine gallery visits with other wellknown destinations like the Millarville Farmer’s Market, Chuckwagon Cafe, or Vale’s Greenhouse. Black Diamond has a lot of other fun new places offering quality experiences, like Westwood, and Bertie’s. routes media special publication

The work in the gallery is always changing and is never stale, so people enjoy frequent visits and seeing something new all the time. In addition to the artwork, people come to the gallery for the atmosphere, and comment on the welcome that they receive, the heart warmth that permeates the place and the peace that they experience. This is actually what I hear from people on a daily basis, its no exaggeration!

R: What do you see in the future for Bluerock Gallery? K: My feeling is that the fine art and fine craft in the gallery space is part of the heart and soul of Black Diamond now. As the shoe repair business and Woo’s General Store was to the early oil and gas development in the province, so our arts organizations are to Alberta’s diversifying economy. I believe that the gallery will continue to thrive as these small towns grow.

Visit the gallery online at bluerockgallery.com, or better yet, just take an afternoon, enjoy the drive and find yourself surrounded beautiful objects of art and beautiful people.

hreepoint Creek meanders along the west and north side of a picture-perfect valley. To the east, one can see Ballyhammage Hills, and to the west, the foothills and the Rocky Mountains. This natural landscape is the setting for numerous agricultural events throughout the year and since 1969, home of the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society. Millarville’s first race meet began on June 23, 1905. It was the result of planning by Sam Kieran, Charles Kerr, W.H. Cochrane, Tom Phillips and other racing enthusiasts who realized the important role of the “sport of kings” to life in the west. Raymond De Malherbe provide the use of his land, rent-free, for 35 years. Later, the Race Club purchased the land from Louis Durand and the races continued, war and weather were its only interruptions. First races were on a grass track without an

inside rail, the track was just marked by flags. More than a century later, racing fans cheer and place their bets on races every July 1st. Through the dedicated efforts of countless communityminded MRAS members, community volunteers, and valued sponsorship, this venue continues to host complex agricultural events. Our vision is one that could have been written in those opening moments in 1905. “We want to be an organization in which all members take pride and ownership in a self-sustaining, progressive, and dynamic centre for the community, that preserves its history, traditions and natural environment to promote rural and agricultural experiences in a welcoming and co-operative manner.”
