Fordingbridge Twinning News

t the latest committee meeting of Fordingbridge Twinning, it was noted that the Association has had its most successful year in recent history to date. And there’s lots more to come! Plenty of new members have joined, increasing the membership significantly. In June there was the Boules evening and in July the “Brica-brac” stall at the Fordingbridge Festival, was very well attended and generated even more members. Peter Adams, established member of the new look “Fordingbridge Twinning Association”, and husband of committee member, Mary, recently undertook the annual twinning cycle ride, organised by Michel Geslin, President of the Vimoutiers Twinning Committee. They covered over 100 miles, taking in the picturesque villages of Beuvron en Auge, and Arromanche with its Canadian War Cemetery at Beny-sur-Mer. The photograph is taken outside the installation entitled “Les trois Arbres

de la liberte” on the sea-front at Ouistreham. This was the fifteenth such ride, and for the first time, all four towns and Countries were represented: Vimoutiers in France, Chatelet in Belgium, Sontra in Germany and Fordingbridge of Great Britain. For further details about Fordingbridge Twinning and its forthcoming trip to the annual “Festival of Apples” in Vermoutiers, (“Foire de la Pomme! – should be a great weekend!) over the weekend of 17th/18th/19th October, please do call Alison (Chairperson) or Derek Ayling, on 01425 650770, or by email on Hippotrain@btinternet.com Don’t forget the Twinning Association’s planned Christmas event, “Ooh la la!, on Friday 5th December, in the Town Hall. It will comprise of an evening of musical entertainment, with a hot meal, all with a French theme. Tickets are £15 for Twinning members, and £17.50 for non-members (so why not join?). They will be on sale in November, from Caxton’s and Jessica’s in Fordingbridge.

Dear Readers,

eptember is drawing to a close as I write but we are enjoying yet another beautiful Indian Summer with the temperature still nudging twenty deg occasionally - so not time to put the BBQ away just yet! We had another beautiful day for the Carnival and it was great to see Ringwood come alive with so much activity all day. And an excellent evening firework display was the icing on the cake. Autumn is a great time for a country walk so check out what there is to see at Blashford Lakes (page 14) and Moors Valley (page 10) or simply take a stroll out in the Forest - Smugglers Path is my favourite, with views from the Purbecks to Cranborne Chase and particularly beautiful on a quiet autumn evening. Why not finish the walk off with a drink

with best wishes,

and maybe a meal at one of the many local pubs around. Now and Then on page 6 features Old Bank House in the Market Place and of course all the the usual articles like ‘Viewed from my window’, Mike’s Motors, and puzzles etc are inside this issue. If you would like more members in your club or society, and/or would like us to publish your news, articles or future events, then simply e-mail the details to: info@roundaboutmags.co.uk. All our current magazines can also be viewed online at: www.roundaboutmags.co.uk. Remember - in future when you need a job done or want to treat someone AND help local businesses, look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ and save yourself time, fuel and most importantly - money!

ROUNDABOUT

ROUNDABOUT RINGWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE & SURROUNDING VILLAGES

NOW and THEN Old Bank House Market Place

T

Early 1950’s

he property now called Old Bank House is thought to have been built around 1720 by the Willis family who lived in neighbouring Church Hatch. It was originally known as the Crown Inn. Throughout the 18th century it was recognised as Ringwood’s premier coaching inn, boasting a large yard with stabling for twenty horses. However in 1801 its landlord was declared bankrupt and all his stock was put up for auction. By this time the inn was owned by Stephen Tunks, a wealthy brewer who then transferred the licence of the Crown to an inn at Friday’s Cross. He set about remodelling the old Crown into a house for himself, its central position in the Market Place no doubt reinforcing Tunks’s own central position in Ringwood society. It was probably at this time that the building was faced with its unusual yellow mathematical tiles, which are tiles fitted together to look like bricks. Stephen Tunks was a banker as well as a brewer and part of his house became used as ‘The Ringwood & Hampshire Bank’, for which he issued his own bank notes. The imposing side door facing onto the lane between his house

and what is now Lambert & Wiltshire suggests this may have been the entrance for banking customers.

Unfortunately following the death of Tunks in 1821 his bank failed, causing Ringwood residents much hardship. Six years later his house was put up for auction along with his many other assets, and was purchased on behalf of Mrs Sarah Brown, a wealthy widow who lived there till her death in 1832. According to the auction details, adjoining this property was the banking house of Fryer & Co of Wimborne. The house continued to be occupied part residentially and partly by a bank owned by Messrs Ledgard of Poole. In 1861 there was consternation again in Ringwood when this bank also failed. The Wilts & Dorset Bank stepped in to open a branch under the management of Henry Rumsey, who lived with his large family in the adjoining house. This time the bank was successful and in the mid 1880 transferred to the High Street, later to become Lloyds bank. The old bank house became a completely

September 2014

private residence until after the 1st World War. It was then used as the offices of the newly formed Ringwood & Fordingbridge District Council until 1936 when new offices were built in Christchurch Road. The old photograph shows the building on a market day probably around 1950 when it was being used by The Ringwood Wholesale Company. Soon afterwards it became an estate agency, for many years known as Ormiston, Knight & Payne. In the 1960s and early 1970s the building fell under threat of demolition for a new road scheme which fortunately never took place. However the planning blight meant the building was allowed to deteriorate until, by the time Prudential estate agents vacated it in 1989, it was in a ruinous state. For several years it remained an eyesore until it was purchased by developer Peter Cheal, who restored it to its former glory by converting it into four private apartments. It was Mr Cheal who renamed the building Old Bank House, reflecting its past partial use in the 19th century.

5 Easy Ways to Cut Your Heating Oil Costs This Winter If you’re on heating oil and would like to make your supply go further this winter, check out our useful tips for easy ways to stay warm for longer! 1) Insulate On average, 60% of the heat that escapes from your home is lost through the walls and roof. By insulating your property, using draft excluders and even closing your curtains in the evening, you can retain heat and reduce your fuel use. 2) Shop Around You might have a regular energy supplier, but are they offering you the best price? By shopping around or using an instant, impartial comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil. 3) Add an additive As well as upgrading your fuel, oil additives can help to improve the efficiency of your boiler, which in turn reduces the amount of oil required to heat your home. 4) Dial it down It’s important to stay warm during winter, but by throwing on an extra jumper and turning your thermostat down by just one degree, you can cut your fuel use by up to 10%! 5) Bleed your radiators By removing excess air from your central heating system, you can make sure that your boiler isn’t working harder than necessary to heat your home.

Rare Dragonfly flies into Moors Valley and stays.

A

rare dragonfly is now thought to have bred successfully at Moors Valley Country Park near Ringwood. First recorded in Britain in 1996, the Lesser Emperor (Anax parthenope) is one of several species of dragonfly to have come over from Europe in the last 20 years to set up home in Britain. Two confirmed sightings have been recorded at the Park in the last month. Dragonflies can spend up to four years of their lives as underwater nymphs before emerging for a few short weeks as they mate and entertain us with their stunning aerial acrobatics. In southern parts of the continent, the Lesser Emperor has a two year life cycle. Further north this may be extended to 3 years. As one was last seen at Moors Valley in 2011 it is thought that the current sightings are the offspring of a small mass migration three years ago. Keith Powrie has been recording dragonflies at the Park for the last 12 years, “Moors Valley is one of the best sites in the country to spot dragonflies,” he said. “There are 45 species in the UK and 28 have been recorded at the Park

with 26 species having bred in its lakes, ponds and slow moving rivers. Moors Valley offers the perfect environment for both dragonflies and damselflies and I am truly delighted that we can now add the rare Lesser Emperor to its resident population.” Looking after the environment is an important part of the work of the Park’s Rangers and income from car parking directly supports a wide range of initiatives including the Park’s water vole reintroduction programme and extensive recordings of dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies and birds. There is no entrance fee to Moors Valley so paid parking is vital to ensuring the continuing success of the Park. Visitors will soon be seeing a series of new posters at Moors Valley explaining a little bit more about how their parking fees are spent, and letting them know that the Rangers and Moors Valley’s wildlife are both very grateful. For more information on events at Moors Valley, or details of the Park’s many attractions go to www.moors-valley.co.uk.

Viewed From My W indow A small selection of short stories written by Patricia Oliver from Horton near Wimborne, describing the ups and downs of caring for feral cats over the years with photos by J Santana-Martin.

A

New Arrival

flattering telephone call about my stories ended with me accepting a new arrival. A cat given the name ‘Pepper’ was a stray that had frequented a workshop begging for food and had then been taken home Bank Holiday weekend as the workshop would be empty and there would be no one there to feed her. The problem was, the family that took her home had a boxer dog who would not tolerate a new arrival especially a ‘C.A.T.’ Everything possible was done to find the owners of this lovely cat, but to no avail, no one claimed her. The boxer dog was a problem and a new home had to be found if she was not to find herself living her life in the garage away from the dog.

and tunnelled back under the duvet. She had no intention of coming out, so a dish of biscuits and water was left in the bedroom for her and a litter tray placed outside the door. We left her to it. We would frequently pay her a visit and attempt to befriend her, but she quickly told you when enough was enough as she started growling. If you took no notice of this warning, then the claws would appear and you had no choice but to back-off!

Pepper - The Bedroom Cat!

What could I do? It is not easy to integrate a mature cat into an existing multi-cat household, but I decided I had to give it a try. Pepper duly arrived and we placed her in a large cage in the house, so she could get her bearings and see who was who in the household and for the other cats to see her, rather than just let her out and face a fight. The next day we decided to free her when the other cats had gone out to play. She had an opportunity to look around on her own without disturbance. All doors were left open and she had free range. It was not long before she found a home...my bed! She tunnelled her way under the duvet and at first we thought we had lost her, she was invisible! However at meal time we found her with just her head poking out from under the duvet and still in this position, I was expected to hold a dish of food for her to eat whilst she remained on her side and under the duvet. She ate all before her

Bedtime was a problem, I had to share my bed with Pepper but she did not mind me, we slept cosily together and she was no trouble.

Next day meals had to be served on the bed, she was definitely not moving! She panicked if one of the other cats came in to pay her a visit and you can hear the growling, but on one occasion she was bold enough to actually go outside and have a look around. It was Mr Tom who brought her back. Pepper has decided that life was good, lazing all day on the soft and comfortable bed, being fed and being left alone. She has all the comfort she could wish for and she has decided that she is definitely a bedroom cat! The full story and many more are in the book “Viewed From My Window” by Patricia Oliver price £12.50 + £2.50 p&p. For more details, contact Patricia on 01202 826244. All proceeds go towards the Veterinary and Welfare needs of the 16 feral cats currently in her care.

Mike's Motors

By Mike Wattam

W

Purple Reign

ith an urgent need to cover a large amount of ground in a comparatively short time, most of us would tend to think “big distance, big car” and certainly that combination does have its attractions. But I well remember wrestling a Maserati down to the south of France – simplistically thinking I would enjoy a dream trip in a dream motor, but the reality turned out to be quite different. The combination of poor weather and a very highly strung and noisy car made that trip a trial of endurance. While the frequent stops for oilwells of petrol were pure misery in the Barclaycard department, they did provide welcome breaks from my constant fight with the car. I would happily have jumped into a car which was less powerful, yet more lithe on its wheels. So I studied the current car posing demurely on my driveway, the quaintly-named Peugeot 208XY. This was an attractive, compact super-mini I had already been surprised by. Peugeot had wisely decided to engineer a superluxury version of their nowubiquitous small 208 hatch and I reasoned it had the credentials and all the toys to make a long journey both comfortable and enjoyable. It had the very popular Peugeot 1.6 litre diesel which I already knew from experience is capable of delivering classleading economy and ‘greenness’ with smooth, quiet and strong power delivery.

Now to the toys. The touch-screen at 7” is large and controls all settings including lights and locking functions, a comprehensive trip computer, the highly flexible Climate Control system, fully integrated bluetooth phone, the in-car entertainment and of course the Europe-wide Sat-nav. Suffice to say the latter guided me faultlessly every time including ‘lane’ suggestions – my ‘first’ seamless experience with a built-in Sat-nav. While the Climate Control was highly At first glance the XY simply configurable by the user, eventually I found it operated exudes class. What happened in... ...October 1964? himself. No, don’t all rush, he already has a driver.

A

t Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, on 15th October, Craig Breedlove, set a new land-speed record of over 520 mph. Just seconds later he set another (still unbroken) record for the world’s longest skid – nearly six miles! His parachute brakes failed and the car travelled another six miles before crashing into a lake at 200 mph. He managed to exit the car without even getting wet. Craig is currently working on a project to take a car powered by two jet engines to 1,000 mph (mach1.4), although the 77-year-old won’t be driving it

1st: The first section of the high speed rail link between Tokyo and Osaka was opened. It had an operational speed of 170mph; ‘coasting’, as Craig Breedlove would probably call it. 8th: Baby, I can drive my own car! Richard Starkey, better known as Ringo Starr, passed his driving test. 10th: Yoshinori Sakai carried the Olympic torch into the stadium in Tokyo to open the Summer Olympics. Yoshinori was born in the outskirts of Hiroshima on 6th August, 1945, the day the atomic bomb was dropped. This choice of runner was a symbol of Japan’s reconstruction and commitment to world peace. 12th: The USSR launched Voskhod 1, the world’s first spacecraft to carry more than one person and the first not to

take spacesuits and helmets (I know the feeling, I’m always forgetting stuff). The threeman crew landed the next day after sixteen orbits of Earth. 14th: At the age of 35 Martin Luther King Jr. became the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. 15th: The Labour Party, led by Harold Wilson, won the general election, ending thirteen years of Conservative Government. American composer/ songwriter Cole Porter died aged 73. 16th: China successfully exploded its first atomic bomb. 29th: The Star of India, an almost flawless ‘double-sided’ star sapphire the size of a golf ball was part of a haul stolen

Petrol was about 4/6d a gallon The average price of a house was about £3,360

All change at the Albion! The Albion (originally called The Station Inn) with its attached stables was unusually built inside the station yard in the 1860’s.

A

fter the railway closed in 1964 the road was re-routed through the site of the old demolished station leaving a good sized garden for the pub and the railway arch within the garden - a very handy all weather bbq area! Mary and Neil have been owners of the Albion Inn for the past nine years and recently have had a ‘shall we or shan’t we?’ decision to make! Fortunately they made the right one and decided to renovate their pub so Verwood now has a smart newly refurbished watering hole and eatery which now has been rebranded into simply - ‘The ALBION’ - cleverly embracing the concept of ‘Evolution rather than Revolution.’ The exterior has been transformed by a smart new coat of fashionable grey paint with white woodwork and the modern grey and white colour scheme continues throughout the bars and restaurant which are also complimented by new carpets, furniture and upholstery. The layout is cleverly broken up into three distinct zones - the main dog friendly bar, a beautiful conservatory restaurant and a third comfy lounge area which separates the restaurant from the bustling bar - perfect for a quieter drink or pre-dinner aperitif! We arrived on Friday night for an early dinner at 6.30 and the bar was already buzzing which was a good sign. And when my husband was told that one of the real ales on tap was his current favourite Doombar, he was most impressed. (For all those pubquiz aficionados out there my husband tells me the Doom Bar was a dangerous sand bank at the mouth of the River Camel estuary

where many ships have run aground!) He was also impressed by the railway themed decor and many old railway photos dotted around. Mary & Neil decided to also bring in new management to complete the overhaul - so enter Dave and Donna who both have loads of experience between them including working in other local pubs. Dave has also taken on a new commis chef and a young trainee chef from Poole College so together with the enthusiastic waitresses they make up a very friendly team, (not forgetting Mary of course aka: the human dynamo, who helps out during busy periods!). The conservatory Restaurant can hold up to 60 diners at a time and the pretty garden can hold 100 covers for various large functions such as Weddings, Funerals, Christenings and Christmas Parties etc. Plus the superb childrens play area in the garden is always a hit with families. The menu which changes about every six weeks has also been totally refurbished by Dave the new chef and his team and is now a mix of traditional pub meals, but with lots of modern menu twists. Choices such as the starters which we chose - Carpaccio of Beef Rocket Salad with Parmesan Shavings or the special of Whitebait with Cucumber Salad. The beef was just nicely seared before it was sliced and was just so succulent whereas the whitebait was beautifully crispy. A delicately crisp and refreshing Pinot Grigio was selected to accompany my husband’s whitebait. Again Dave has retained some of the

27 traditional main course pub favourites but mixed it up with some very exotic gastro offerings! My husband chose the Chicken ‘Hanging Kebabs’ which was certainly an unusual and eyecatching way of presenting kebabs. There were Salmon and Prawn, Chicken and Beef Kebabs to choose from which were also accompanied by 3 spicy dips, chips and a salad. I selected the far more exotic and my favourite - Local King Scallops and Tiger Prawns, Samphire Grass and Stir Fried Vegetables. Samphire Grass is another name for Sea Asparagus and is only available in July and August which was fortunate! Hence the need for Dave to change the menu regularly - the specials are changed on a more or less daily basis. Dave sources as much of his ingredients from local suppliers where possible so scallops and seafood from

Christchurch and Poole is about as local to Verwood as he can get! By seven thirty the restaurant was virtually full - good news travels fast we thought. You only have to look at The Albion, Verwood on Trip Advisor to see the recent rave reviews! A good range of home made puddings and a cheeseboard is also on offer - Bailey’s Cheesecake was a special on our visit but the lighter Eton Mess and the Trifle was about all we could manage followed by a fresh coffee and a couple of chocolates to finish. Daily boards outside the pub announce regular menu changes and great value 2 for1 lunchtime offers. The new look Albion has certainly gone down well with the many positive comments in fact I would say it’s definitely a case of ‘full steam ahead!’ for the future.

The ALBION Open 7 days a week.

Mon-Sat: 12 noon - 11.00pm. Sun: 12 noon - 10.30pm. Open for food: Mon: 6pm - 9pm, Tues - Sat 12 noon - 2.15pm, 6pm - 9pm, Sun: 12 noon - 8.00pm.

“Adios!” say Elm Tree landlords Tim and Alan.

The Elm Tree will continue as normal, being managed by Becca Hole who has been working with Alan and Tim for over 5 years as their ‘right hand lady’. Young Ringwood International Ambassador returns home from Lions Camp in Finland

S

hona Graham, aged 18 from Ringwood, secured her place on the Lions International Youth Camp & Exchange Program this summer and spent nearly 3 weeks in Finland learning about the life and culture of that remarkable country. Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions sponsored Shona’s application and arranged for her to stay with a host family in Southern Finland for 9 days before traveling to the International Youth Camp in Finland where, as the only representative from England, Shona mixed and made friends with others her own age from 17 different countries around the world. Pictured above is Shona sharing a moment with everyone at the International Youth Camp in Finland. Also pictured is Shona being congratulated by Geoff Kay, the President of Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club at their recent club meeting. Shona enjoyed the experience of a lifetime and explained more about her trip:“During my first week in which I stayed with Maarit, Juha and their dog, Herta, we visited loads of different places to give me a sense of Finnish culture, in particular the Finnish summer. As I am interested in museums, we visited Sibelius’

house and a museum concerning Finnish women in WW2. We also went to Helsinki for a day, as well as Porvoo and Mikkeli to get a sense of the difference between cities in Finland. A highlight of that week was visiting Juha’s sister on Lake Saimaa and going out on the boat. One of the most noteworthy parts of my trip was the friendships formed in both weeks. I cried hard when I said goodbye to my host family and am hopefully visiting them again in December. Everyone at the camp was wonderful, but certain friends I am sure I will see again in the next few years, in particular Mie, my roommate from Denmark and Tuva from Norway. I’d just like to finish by saying thank you for the wonderful opportunity to have so many incredible experiences. It’s hard to describe how wonderful it was to really connect with people just like me from all over the globe and also to experience a culture I knew little about”. Two other Ringwood Students, Nicole Mumford-Jobaire, and Elizabeth Treble were also sponsored by Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club to travel as part of the same scheme this summer to Colorado in the United States and Mumbai in India.

Tea and Coffee: The Good and the Bad By Alison Runham

W or foes?

e meet up for coffee; invite friends for a cuppa. But are these drinks friends

Caffeine The good: Caffeine increases our alertness, and may temporarily sharpen our cognitive abilities. Substantial research suggests that coffee and tea drinkers are less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease, most likely due to caffeine, which may also help with symptoms. The bad: Caffeine can raise blood pressure and adrenaline levels. It can also relax pelvic muscles, making you urinate more frequently. High levels may be linked to low birth weight or miscarriage. The truth: Maximum protection against Parkinson’s disease seems to come from just three cups of tea or coffee daily. While lab results seem promising, there’s no definitive evidence linking tea and coffee drinking with reduced Alzheimer’s risk. Our bodies can become accustomed to caffeine. Without it we can become tired, irritable, headachy and even shaky and nauseous. So how much is too much? Recommended limits average at 400-600mg per day and just 200mg if you’re pregnant. • cup of green tea: 40mg • cup of normal tea: 70mg • mug of instant coffee: 100mg • filter coffee: 150mg • average latte: 150mg • large Americano: 200mg Don’t forget other caffeine sources too: energy drinks, chocolate and some painkillers and fizzy drinks.

Antioxidants The good: Antioxidants mop up free radicals which can damage our cells. We all know green tea contains antioxidants, but so do black tea and coffee - just at lower levels. The bad: It’s unclear how much we benefit from these antioxidants once our body has processed our cuppa. But active compounds in green tea are being used in research with nanotherapeutics – the development of microscopic compounds that escape processing to find and target diseases, including cancer. The truth: Many foods contain antioxidants, often at higher levels than tea and coffee, so there are better sources. Reducing stroke, coronary heart disease risk and cholesterol levels The good: Some studies suggest that drinking tea and coffee reduces stroke, coronary heart disease risk and cholesterol levels. The bad: Contradictory evidence. One study found high tea consumption, and low and high coffee consumption reduced stroke risk most,– moderate consumption made no difference. Reported reductions in cholesterol levels were small. The truth: Once again, more research is needed to exclude other factors and study longterm effects.

Diabetes prevention and management The good: Some evidence suggests that moderate amounts of coffee or tea, drunk black or with a little milk, may slightly reduce your risk of Diabetes Type 2. The bad: There’s also research showing that high coffee intake may impair insulin resistance, making it harder to stabilise blood sugar levels. The truth: You’re likely to see both theories in the media, but more research that eliminates other influential factors is needed. Liver health The good: Research suggests moderate consumers of coffee and green tea are less likely to suffer from NALD (nonalcoholic liver disease). The bad: High intake of green tea supplements has been linked to liver damage, although it’s not clear whether green tea extract or another ingredient is guilty. The truth: Tea or coffee can’t prevent or reverse liver damage if you drink or smoke heavily. So moderation seems best. Three or four cups of tea or coffee daily appear to give maximum health benefits and minimum risk, and without milk or sugar they’ll be calorie free - but practically nutrition-free too, so drink fruit juices and dairy-based drinks as well.

Life Cycle Bradley Wiggins I’m not. by Derek Thompson

W

hen it was time to look into greener modes of transport Anne was already two wheels ahead of me.”These would be good,” she glanced over from the local paper, which would soon find its way into the woodburner. I immediately felt a sense of foreboding, as if a new batch of chickens were already winging their way to us. But no, it was something else. “Pedelecs,” she said. “That’s the way to go.” I couldn’t see why we needed to cross a boating lake, but I was keen to find out why. Pedelecs, she swiftly educated me, are electrically assisted bicycles - perfect for those short to medium journeys that do not merit the car, and which might otherwise tire me out. Even better, these were used bikes - i.e. recycled - so they came with doubly green credentials. Although why someone would want to recycle an eco bike was beyond me. As is our way, once we’d been inspired action swiftly followed. All it took was a fair chunk of money and a man with a trailer to deliver the

goods, and we were soon the proud owners of a pair of barely used Lafree Giant Twists. Aside from the fact that both bikes look identical (although mine doesn’t have a wicker basket on the front), the Twists soon became a talking point in the village. The downhill journey out is a little like a funfair ride, only with chaffinches and woodpigeons instead of skeletons and ghosts. It’s a different story coming back in, though, and it almost feels like the birds gather in the hedgerows to watch me puffing up the 1 in 4 incline. The neighbours gather too, sometimes, with a now familiar litany of questions. 1. No, the motor doesn’t do all the work for you - only half of it. Less, if you use it on eco mode. 2. Yes, our hill is very steep. That would be why I’m sweating. 3. Yes, the bike is keeping me fit. That’s why my face is red and my legs ache. 4. No, I’d rather not fetch any shopping for you in my dapper and roomy

panniers, but thanks for noticing them. For the technically minded, the bike’s NiMH battery has a range of about 20 miles, as long as there aren’t too many hills like ours. I commute by bike now and I’m still surprised by how quickly I can pull away at the lights, to the consternation of other cyclists. Motorists, pedestrians and horses are surprised too, but that’s usually when I meet them at the bend in the lane on the way home. It’s a wonder I haven’t worn my bell out. I only work in town three days a week, so the battery gets a recharge at the same time as my legs, unless we head out for a jaunt along the coast. Cycling is an instant time machine. Suddenly I’m 11 again, a bottle filled with squash clipped to the frame, racing along for the joy of it. A child at a crossing recently broke this nostalgic reverie. She stared for a moment and asked, “Mummy, why is that man riding a girl’s bike?” Despite all the bike’s green credentials, my 11 year-old self cringed. Well, until the lights changed anyway.

Portrait of a Dorset Artist The work of a Dorset artist has made it into the final round of judging in the prestigious National Portrait Gallery competition. ‘Luther’ by Paul Matthews from Puddletown is a life study produced over a four day period. Earlier this year Paul received The Chester Zoo Award at The National Exhibition of Wildlife Artists for his painting of a chimpanzee. Three years ago Paul took the tough decision to leave his career as a graphic designer and become a full-time wildlife painter. In 2012 he was a finalist in the David Shepherd Foundation’s competition for Wildlife Artist of the Year. His picture, ‘The Passenger’, selected ahead of thousands of entries from all over the world, received ‘Public’s choice award’ at The Mall Galleries, London. At the same time he was a finalist in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year competition, receiving runner up in the Frozen Planet section with his polar bear portrait. He has had work shortlisted in the final of this competition every year since its inception in 2008. Prior to this he worked at Dorset County Council. “I gained so much experience during my time at the council, which has stood me in good stead,” says Paul, who has lived in Puddletown for 21 years and was born in London. “I have drawn and painted most of my life and now that I am fulfilling my ambition I am so happy. I enjoy seeing how people react when they see their painting.” Paul, who is currently in Botswana, has trekked all over the world in pursuit of his perfect subject. “I have travelled to Tanzania, Kenya and the Okavango Delta in North Botswana,” says Paul, who mainly paints in oils on canvas. Recently he drew entrepreneur Levi Roots at the National Portrait Gallery. www.lpaulmatthews.com ‘Luther’ by Paul Matthews

Stars Appeal’s latest campaign targets £750,000 for Breast Cancer Unit

alisbury District Hospital’s charity, the Stars Appeal, launched a major new project on Thursday 11th September 2014. The Stars Appeal Breast Cancer Unit Campaign aims to raise £750,000 to provide a much needed dedicated Breast Unit at the hospital. One in eight women will develop Breast Cancer in their lifetime and breast cancers treated in Salisbury have increased by nearly 40% in the last two years. Whilst the Hospital’s specialist breast care team offer excellent care, the number of patients they see is growing fast and now they urgently need a dedicated Breast Unit to provide even better, quicker and more dignified care to the 4,500 local women, and the small number of men, they see each year. Currently, as in many general hospitals in England, there are no dedicated facilities for breast patients. The new Unit will provide the best possible environment for local women. Purpose-built waiting, diagnostic and treatment rooms will be dedicated entirely to breast patients. Counselling rooms will be available to patients who have just received a cancer diagnosis or who need support. Sensitive design and décor will create a calm, light and dignified environment.

The new Breast Unit will enable quicker care and treatment. The dedicated facilities will mean most care will be delivered in one place with no need for patients to visit other departments in the Hospital, repeatedly dressing and undressing for these procedures. Thanks to the increased space, and availability of state-of-the-art equipment, patients attending for tests to see if they have breast cancer will receive their diagnosis on the same day, avoiding anxious waits for results. Clinics will be run jointly with oncologists and plastic reconstructive surgeons, meaning patients will no longer need to visit the hospital as frequently. The Stars Appeal is asking local people to support the campaign to raise the £750,000 needed for the dedicated Breast Unit as soon as possible. Fundraising for the Unit has already had a great start with over £190,000 collected since the end of the Stars Appeal’s last major campaign. Forthcoming events for the campaign include the Rockbourne Fair at Salisbury Racecourse 22nd24th October and the Tidworth 10k on Sunday 2nd November. Find out how to donate and other ways to help at the Stars Appeal website, www.starsappeal. org or on 01722 429005. The NHS will pay for all running costs of the new Unit.

Ferndown’s Roll of Honour Display

A

s part of the work for the August World War One Commemoration, Ian Dale of Ferndown Royal British Legion completed five months of research into the personal backgrounds, military records and regimental unit of those names appearing on the Ferndown Roll of Honour from the Great War. The collected details have been mounted as a mobile display, now available to local schools, churches, care-homes, community and youth groups, and anyone interested in sharing the memories of this fateful conflict and its effect on us today. The display can next be seen in Ferndown Library and it is hoped to publish the project as a lasting legacy to those who gave their lives. Calling Classic & Sports Car owners in & around Verwood!

W

e are currently forming a group of owners of classic and sports cars who live in Verwood and surrounding areas. Eligible classic cars are saloons manufactured pre-1975 and 2-seater sports cars pre-2003. Our aim is to meet and go out for drives together in Dorset and surrounding counties, stop off for refreshments on the way and

see/enjoy the scenic countryside around. And share the experience and knowledge of restoring and running these wonderful old cars. The routes will not be too arduous or overly speedy. If you are interested in joining the ‘Verwood Area Classic and Sports Car Group’ call Carol & John 01202 829768 or Bazza 01202 823338 / 077865 16413.

Wyn’s Book Shop - the secret is out!

N

ot many book enthusiasts in Ringwood know there is a book shop open daily at Greyfriars Community Centre, opposite the Memorial Gardens in Christchurch Road. Known as Wyn’s Book Shop it stocks over 4000 books, including many paperbacks which are all generously donated most are just 50p. Recently, a second summer sale was held outside the Meeting House and the sales of £141 went towards Greyfriars, which is a registered charity and the Community Centre for Ringwood. But whilst not that well known, Wyn’s Book Shop is certainly not a secret and everyone is most welcome.

Ringwood

O

n 21 August Ringwood U3A had an indoor picnic and social, which was well supported and judging by the laughter, was enjoyed by all. The Singing for Fun group entertained us with a medley of songs, we had a quiz and ate lots of cake. The U3A is an organisation for retired or semi-retired people who want to stay active, both mentally and physically, and there is a Walking Group, a Mah Jong group, two book groups, Classic Cars, Current Affairs,

News

Table Tennis and Spanish – with more in the pipeline. If any member wants to start another group, or is interested in a particular subject, they are given help to get it up and running. The Group has a monthly meeting with a speaker on the third Thursday of every month at 2pm, after which members mingle and chat, and exchange ideas. Funny Girls Bonkers: My Life in Laughs - Jennifer Saunders We couldn’t talk about Dawn French and then not include Jennifer Saunders’ memoir, Bonkers. A self-confessed procrastinator, Saunders seems to be under the impression it’s a bit of a miracle she’s achieved anything. There’s never been a life plan she says, more a sort of stumbling from one thing to the next, but it seems to be working for her. The book follows her haphazard working life alongside fellow ‘bluffer’ French and is full of their adventures together as well as those had whilst working on her own series such as Absolutely Fabulous. Then of course, there is her battle with cancer; again, not something she had planned for. She doesn’t shy away from talking about the tough times and it seems that laughter really could be the best medicine. How to be a Woman - Caitlin Moran Moran’s definitive guide to being female will tell every Miss, Mrs and Ms everything we’re supposed to be doing as we totter through life in toe-crushing heels , as well as raising all the questions we’re not supposed to ask, such as ‘do we really need to wax?’ and ‘should a sense of broodiness be in-built?’ It’s a laugh out loud book that will make you feel better about your old lady chin whiskers and your inability to get on a trampoline post kids. Billed as being ‘part

Barbara Streisand may have been the ‘Funny Girl’ of the silver screen, but some of these ladies have been making audiences laugh their Bridget Jones-style big pants off for years. We’ve put together a selection of books by funny women, for funny women, or just women in general… or men who want to talk about problems with hair in unwanted places, and how to walk in high heels. memoir, part rant’ this is a laughoutloud-funny book that will reassure the ‘fairer sex’ and educate the male population, provided the blokes can get past the chapters on puberty. Bossypants Tina Fey Hollywood star Tina Fey has a unique ability to make us feel like she could be our best friend. In fact, she wouldn’t look out of place sat at your kitchen table, looking frazzled, glass of white wine in hand, telling you about her adventures into planning her daughter’s Peter Pan-themed birthday party. Bossypants follows Tina’s rise to fame from jobbing stand-up comic, to writing sketches for Saturday Night Live. The woman whose Sarah Palin impersonation is more well- known than, well, Sarah Palin is funny, often painfully candid and incredibly self-deprecating, and you can’t help but love her for that. She gives the impression of being a woman on the edge; juggling an amazing career with her family life, and dropping a few balls along the way. Dear Fatty - Dawn French National treasure Dawn French has had an amazing career as a funny girl and this memoir is written as a series of letters to people who have influenced her life. Dear Fatty is a fantastic blend of honesty, poignancy and controversy, just like the comedy actress herself. As one half of the nation’s best-loved

female comedy duo, French and Saunders, she and her partner in crime redefined the roles of women in entertainment. With their sideways look at life that started with performances in Comic Strip they’ve sent up pretty much everyone in their hugely successful TV series. French tackles everything, from her career to her father’s death, and not forgetting a nation’s obsession with her size. A brilliant read. I Hate Everyone…Starting With Me Joan Rivers The queen of controversy and the heeled assassin of the red carpet, no one is safe from the acidtongued Joan Rivers, including it seems, herself. The New York Times bestseller is a no holds barred rant about everything that gets on Joan’s nerves; nothing is sacred, especially not ugly children. Rivers has made a career out of making fun of people and this is a pretty hilarious rant. You might want to read it in small doses though, or face seeing the world through very jaded glasses That’s Another Story: The Autobiography - Julie Walters Beloved British star of both stage and screen, Julie Walters is as well remembered for belting out Abba’s classics as she is for her turn as Mrs Overall in Acorn Antiques. In her autobiography she chronicles her Irish Catholic upbringing in 1950s Birmingham, to her convent school, and her short-lived career as a nurse, before she turned to acting. West End performances, Oscar nominations and those Harry Potter films then followed over the next few decades. The book reads just as you would expect it be like to have a chat and a cuppa with Walters: open, friendly, entertaining and moving.
