Let’s go... KENT

Parish of St Leonard Words & photos: John Milbank

A place of worship for 900 years, the Parish of St Leonard in Hythe is also home to Kent’s darkest secret: an ossuary, or crypt, containing some 1,022 skulls and 2,000 thigh bones; one of only two such collections in the UK. The earliest of the remains are believed to have been dug up in the 13th century when the church was extended, as well as from four other graveyards in the Hythe area that closed by 1500. The bones, which include those from men, women and children of the 12th to 15th centuries, include signs of Roman and African descent, and a guided tour of this small but fascinating location costs just £2 per person.

Get me there ■ While

the church is open every day from

8am to 5.15pm, the ossuary is open for the summer season from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm Monday to Saturday, and 2-4pm on Sundays. ■ Special

arrangements can sometimes be

made for groups to commit to a timed visit by calling Mr Hughes on 01303 264470. ■ Please

note that coach access is not available

directly to the church, though there is limited car parking. ■ The

Tiger Territory is the largest of its kind in the UK

WYCROSS ZOO IN Leicestershire is celebrating the launch of its

multi-million pound Sumatran tiger habitat this summer, which is now home to the attraction’s new stars – Jahly and Sialang (who’s pictured here). Both youngsters were originally in French zoos, travelling the 700-miles via road and sea in time for the opening of their 3,000m2 enclosure – the largest of its kind in the UK. GTW’s editor Helen was lucky enough to be invited to a special preview of the new habitat, which has a state of the art tunnel, specially designed to encourage the big cats to lounge over the huge glass tube and offer visitors an up close view of these critically endangered animals like never before. “It’s amazing,” says Helen. “Huge viewing windows pepper the enclosure, in front of heated rocks that, it’s hoped, will tempt the tigers to relax in full view.” Find out more about the pair, and see how they’re settling in for yourself, on a visit to Twycross, which is also home to the new, fantastic Chimpanzee Eden, which launched last year at the zoo. The sound of music

Music at Brodsworth celebrates the Hall’s musical past

For years, Brodsworth Hall near Doncaster was filled with sound: gramophones boomed out the tunes of the day, and the local village brass band played at family events. However, years later, with staff slowly leaving and the house falling into disrepair, it stood silent... Until now! Groups visiting before November will find Brodsworth Hall once again filled with the sound of music, as a new exhibition – Music at Brodsworth: Storytelling through sound – focuses on the Thellusson family’s love of music. “We’re bringing back the spirit of the house,” says Eleanor Matthews, curator of after Brodsworth Hall. “The house will be

sites, villages, towns and cities. As the marketing literature points out, it takes in key routes that have been used for centuries, from ancient paths to Stonehenge to trails Georgian society types would have taken to Bath. Indeed, both it, and the region as a whole, offers everything from walks and castles to vineyard and factory tours. Designed to ultimately rival the great touring routes of the world, the Great West Way® is a collaboration between a variety of tourist organisations and destinations, including Visit Wiltshire and Tourism South East – made possible by the Government’s £40m Discover England Fund, administered by Visit England. Numerous themed itineraries and trails, including heritage, food and drink, countryside and film tourism are designed to encourage visitors to explore the route in depth, and the concept is being continually extended via new collaborations with numerous partners, including Rough Guides. One of the most recent developments has been the arrival of a Great West Way® Discoverer pass. This is a transport pass between train and bus providers covering around 250 routes across the region, creating the largest integrated bus and train ticket of its kind. Reactions to the initiative have been good. David Andrews, Director of the Great West Way® says: “We’re very happy with the results we’ve seen so far from the launch of the Great

Camel herds are a common sight as you trek the mountains

The next morning we’re woken by bird song. The sun is shining and the view is as breathtaking as ever. We’re going for a half-day mountain trek with our guide, Abdel. He is knowledgeable about the local area, and we soon learn that he introduced Paul to the estate agent who sourced the land for this retreat. We visit hillside villages, and eventually our path takes us into a forested area at the base of the Atlas Mountains. Here we rest – until around 500 goats appear with their keeper. Being herded along the hillside like school children, they’re boisterous and wayward WWW.GROUPTRAVELWORLD.COM

North Africa and it appears quite a challenge keeping them to the route. Paul organises guided walks, like this one, as well as mule trekking, camel and horse riding, visits to a local souk (market), skiing if weather permits, visits to the vibrant city of Marrakech, 4x4 adventures, and the ascent of 4167m Mount Toubkal. There are also four golf courses nearby.

A PEACEFUL HAVEN If relaxing is more your thing, the pool is a peaceful haven. The cafe/bar has a fireplace for more chilly evenings, and up on the rooftop there are views that reach as far as the city of Marrakech. For groups there’s a lovely function room (a group of botanists are due to arrive the day we leave); yoga and painting holidays are held here on certain dates, and weddings can also be accommodated. Paul has created a little slice of paradise and goes to great lengths to ensure that the experience is completely traditional and relaxed. All transport and excursions are arranged for you. He has even curated a shop of local goods at fixed prices showcasing many of the items that furnish his rooms. The Berber people are very friendly and welcoming and with rooms starting at £81 per night, including breakfast, this luxurious retreat is great value.
