CONVENTION OF BARCELONA! What is the most amazing in a convention of the Rotary International ? In my opinion, it’s the atmosphere. It’s crazy how the Rotary invaded Barcelona. We were two Rotaractors taking the plane in Paris, and a man arrived in front of us in the airport, where we were waiting the plane. And he said to us: “ how are you , hey Rotaractors?” This man was a Rotarian from Brasil , he recognized us thanks to our pin’s and I thinked at this moment that is the Rotary International. My opinion was confirmed with the opening ceremony. When all the flags of the rotarian countries appeared on the wall and flashed by, I understood what is the capacity of the Rotary International and what we can together build. It’s crazy: when you visited Barcelona or when you just took for a walk over the streets o the city, you couldn’t make a step without meeting a rotarian. You can recognize them with their rotarian’s cap, or pin’s or with the RI’s convention bag. All the convention proved to myself that the Rotary International is a big organization, but the most important is that it’s the biggest family in the world. You can’t imagine the atmosphere of friendship in the convention. Everybody speak with everyone. Anybody cared about the religion, the nationality, the colour. In our time, with the terrorism and the war, it’s the most important image that we have to convey all over the world. The Rotaract Convention started on Tuesday with a intervention of Rick King, the president of the Rotary International. He spoke about our youth and our dynamism and he sung as he knows to do. It continues with different workshop about public relation, DDR’s formation. The convention finished in joy and in music with a classical concert. Let’s have an appointment next year in Brisbane!

Some news from the NETHERLANDS... By Edgar Visscher Eric-rep for The Netherlands On June 29 I officially took over the tasks of Annet Stoffels. Before that I have been president of the National Dutch Rotaract Board for three years. I will be combining this task this year with the organisation of the EUCO 2003 in Amsterdam. My details: Edgar Visscher Edisonstraat 43a 2811 EM Reeuwijk The Netherlands Phone: +31 6 5149 4168 E-mail: edgar@rotaract.nl

Rotaract in The Netherlands The member status is updated on July 1. The official count is 515 members and 52 clubs. 4 new clubs are starting up this year, so we foresee a growth during 2002-2003. Hopefully we reach 600 again. Besides this we receive many new questions through our website, mainly by people who ask for the address of the club near them. The relation with Rotary is still improving on National and District level as we have many contacts. Now there are of course extra contacts because of the EUCO. The main activities I will do for improving the awareness for European affairs are in the organisation of the EUCO. The EUCO should be the start of full European and international awareness on Rotaract and ERIC.

EUCO 2003

The organisation is going pretty ok so far. Many clubs are integrated in the committee, which consists of 20 people now, both experienced and new. The basic outline of the programme is ready, as you can find on our website (www.rotaract.nl/euco). We are now very busy getting the official registration page ready and getting sponsors in. Main sponsoring should come from the side of Rotary. We have set up the ‘Euro for the EUCO’ action, which should generate € 1,- of each Rotarian in The Netherlands (we have about 20.000). The promotion for EUCO 2003 is going very well. We had promo events in Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro, on German conferences and we will go to the conference in France and to the districts in Belgium in October. We certainly do not worry on the participants as we expect to reach our goal of 350 Rotaractors easily. We are also busy in finding a project to launch during the EUCO 2003. We really want to launch a project for which all Rotaract Clubs in Europe can generate money and actions during 2003-2004. We think a real pan-European project can revive the spirit for all clubs and for the meaning of ERIC too. On the price we still try to achieve € 125,- including all dinners, but of course that depends on the sponsoring. If we will not achieve this we will for sure offer dinners at very cheap prices. Of course we would like to know from you on a very short notice what ERIC’s plans are for the Saturday conference. We already received a request from Russia to have a presentation on Rotaract in Russia and perhaps that is something to put in Saturday’s programme, but that is of course up to you. If you want to get updates on the organisation each month, please register for our newsletter on our website. And please do go on promoting EUCO 2003 as we want to have participants
