A Word from the Editor by Paolo Ogno Dear Rotaractors from all over Europe, in this issue you will find a calendar full of new, interesting events, with all the e-mail addresses and the links necessary to subscribe to. Great Britain, Germany, Romania, Hungary, France, Austria, Luxembourg, Spain, The Netherlands and Italy... it really seems we are giving you all the informations to plan your holidays until next Year! After the calendar you can find an article written by Lukasz about the role of the Treasurer in the Club. I found it really interesting, and I absolutely agree about "Good treasurers are real treasures". Two articles about the Deuko 2002, the German National Rotaract Conference, and the "mysterious" W.I.P. (Weekend International de Paris) are following. Please... please: please! Send me any kind of document or article you consider "interesting" and "internationally relevant". Do you want our newsletter to be rich and full of events and articles? Help me, then, to match this ambitious goal!!

Yours in Rotaract, Paolo Ogno iandc@rotaract-eric.org I&C Division

Treasurer - in him/her we trust by Lukasz Grochowski Difficult word to pronounce for some nations although the officer it stands for bears heavier burden than the rest of the board - legal responsibility for finances. Keeping accounts properly is something different than collecting pennies to the Poland kitty. Rotaract clubs as legal entities registered by respective courts should pay special attention to all issues related to money. Even if the money is not very big. Transparent records, receipts, bills etc. stink of bureaucracy but precaution is better than further trouble with lost amounts, not registered dues which were paid and unclear monthly balance. In some countries fiscal agencies may even periodically check if a club takes proper care of finances. So treasurer must be meticulous, organised and honest above all. Also this person should be knowledgeable about local regulations and have at least basic economic skills. These days permanent access to the Internet would be an additional asset so the club can use on-line banking. Fun and easy! All the above may suggest that it is more of a real job than any other function in the club. Maybe that is why good treasurers serve several terms because everybody is afraid to spoil the milk. The only doubtful reward this person gets is staying close to money which some people like ;) Good treasurers are real treasures!

DEUKO 2002... where it all began! by Maik Grieger The main event of the German Rotaract Community returns to its roots which are in Hildesheim at the 1000-year-old rose bush. Because 13 years ago the very first German National Conference took place in Hildesheim. Like the rose Germany bush Rotaract kept growing over the years more and more and carries many flowers today. But no matter how big Rotaract gets, we know we all belong together and we are proud to be a part of this family. And because of this we come together every year and show this in all our strength, because this is what Rotaract is: Learning, Helping, and Celebrating. Besides the "usual" program like workshops, committee meetings and plenary session, we have to special highlights. On Saturday Dr. Lothar Späth, CEO of Jenoptik AG and former Prime Minister of the German state of Baden-Wßrttemberg, one of the most famous politicians and managers of Germany, will talk to us. And on Sunday, we are proud to welcome Rotary World President Richard King, who visits Germany especially for our conference and will have a speech.

But we also won´t forget the celebrating. On Friday, there will be a W elcome-Party in the cafeteria of the University of Hildesheim. And on Saturday, we will have a festive dinner and evening in the "Aquarium": surrounded by three huge glass walls, we will have a party until the sun will rise. The whole program and any further information are available at www.deuko2002.de. If you have more questions, you can contact Maik Grieger, Vice President of the Rotaract Club of Hildesheim at +49 (178) 2486627, +49 (5069) 1507 or mailto:Maik.Grieger@rotaract.de. How to register Registration is possible at www.deuko2002.de. The fee is 50 Euros until March 29 and 55 Euros after that date. It is a tradition that during the conference you sleep in sporting halls near the conference area, so you don´t have to spend money on hotels. In order to register, you can also send a mail to mailto:Mario.Zinserling@rotaract.de or mailto:Maik.Grieger@rotaract.de. How to get to Hildesheim Hildesheim is located 40 kilometres southeast from Hannover. If you will join our conference you can fly directly to Hannover and take S-Bahn or local trains to drive to Hildesheim or fly to Frankfurt and take direct trains to Hildesheim (takes 3 hours, ICE Frankfurt-Berlin). If you want to come by car, you have to drive to Hildesheim using the Autobahn 7. And take the exit "Hildesheim". From there on, you have to follow the signs leading to the university.
