PERFORMING ARTISTS DIRECTORY

WELCOME This directory is the result of conversations between The Rose Brampton and staff at the Peel District School Board and Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board. We all realized the COVID-19 pandemic had negatively impacted education and the performing arts. We identified our common need to support students, teachers and artists, and ensure quality performing arts experiences continue to be made available. This directory aims to maintain the connection between educators and professional artists, delivering high-quality artistic programming to virtual and in-person classes. Quality arts experiences help broaden students’ horizons, develop critical thinking and analysis skills, creativity, problem-solving skills, and have important positive mental health effects. These experiences with students are win-win for artists too, as they help artists reflect on and refine their own practice and develop new audiences for their work. Partnerships in education can help to uplift, stabilize, and grow the arts sector in our community. We hope this directory will introduce you to many incredible artists. Stay tuned for updates, as new artists will be added often. Christina Akrong Education and Outreach Coordinator

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION TO THE DIRECTORY Performing Artists Directory This directory is a listing of professional artists from Brampton, the Greater Toronto Area, and beyond, who are available to facilitate live virtual workshops and presentations with Peel Region students during the 2020-21 school year. This directory may be used by public schools, private schools, homeschool groups, and other organizations wishing to provide learning experiences in performing arts for their communities. This is not an exhaustive list of all of the talented professional artists in our area, by any means! If you know of an artist who you think should be included, or if you are an artist who would like to be listed here, please see the How to be included in this listing section below.

5

HOW IT WORKS This directory is provided as a service by the Performing Arts division of the City of Brampton. It is a complement to our Arts Adventures Education Series, and a special way that we seek to help artists and schools connect during the Covid-19 pandemic. Teachers, school representatives, and other organizations wishing to book artists should contact artists directly. The City of Brampton will not be acting as a booking agent for these workshops and presentations. All bookings, negotiations, and payments go through the artists. Please take advantage of our Resource materials section below to find helpful materials to assist you in planning together, making a written agreement, and seeking feedback.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION This directory has not been vetted by an application process. Please do your own due diligence by: • Requesting a Vulnerable Sector Screening or equivalent police background check; • Researching and interviewing artists to ensure fit for your needs; • Asking for previous work experience or references as appropriate; • Negotiating and agreeing on terms and fees ahead of time and in writing; • Pre-planning together with the artist to clarify goals and expectations for each party.

I will share how I break down a monologue with simple tools that lead to interesting and compelling acting choices. This workshop is suitable for students with any level of acting experience.

Sandeep Chahal, aka Sunny Deewana, is a Brampton-based writer, comedian and actor. He started his artistic journey as an actor performing in local theatre productions. He then went on to learn improvisation, stand-up comedy and screen writing. Sunny has also ventured into the digital space. Using his experience from performing and writing he has created a number of short films which have been very well-received. Sunny was born in India and moved to Canada at the age of 14. Moving to a new country and starting life all over has its toll on any person or family. Sunny naturally leaned towards using comedy as a mode of expression to deal with the struggle of trying to adjust to a new place. His experience as an immigrant is the fuel for his artistic drive. He uses his writing and performance to touch on those issues that impacted him as an immigrant. Sunny’s artistic work has been centred around comedy. He has explored the art of making someone laugh using theatre, stand up comedy, improvisation and writing for the screen. His focus has always been to use comedy to explore themes and topics that are somewhat taboo or untouched because of one reason or another. Comedy allows him to talk about uncomfortable things in a manner that is well received. With the goal of having a common platform for performance artists to share their voice, Sunny runs open mics, improvisation workshops among other things under the banner of “Laal Button”. The goal of this organization is to create a platform of expression for artists of color. Through this platform he continues to inspire and connect local artists of Brampton as they develop and showcase their talent at a variety of venues. The organization also encourages upcoming writers and performance artists to develop their work and connect with one another by organizing writing circles, readings, auditions. Sunny continues to perform over Zoom nowadays because of the pandemic, but otherwise Sunny has performed in a variety of places including Brampton, Oakville, Hamilton, Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver.

WORKSHOP: FUNDAMENTALS OF IMPROVISATION The workshop will be an interactive experience and is going to be based on the fundamentals of improvisation. It will include a warm-up section where everyone participates in exercises that affect attention, listening skills and inspire creativity. The second part of the workshop will include more advanced improvisation exercises and will cover topics like how to work with others and be creative, the basics of improvisation, listening and supporting your peers, non-verbal communication, and trusting one another. The workshop also covers skills development in storytelling, the structure of a scene, and character development. The workshop is conducted in a safe space and special attention is paid to ensure everyone feels welcome to express themselves without the fear of being judged.

This is an introduction to the world of Tap Dance. Split into 15 min. pieces, students will first engage in a tap battle. Don’t worry, it’s safe. Tap is one of the first street dances in America. In the late 19th century, dancers would engage in healthy competition in the streets in order to establish who was the best. After this friendly competition, students will learn a little bit about the history of tap dance and its connection with popular culture. Since seeing is believing, they will then see some archival footage of some stand out performances from film and theatre. The final 15 minutes will be devoted to creating a rhythmic composition with the whole class. There’s a lot to be learned in the practice of tap dance. It’s a form that trains both musicianship and movement. The balance between the two is where the dance lives. That’s a whole lesson in itself.

PRESENTATION - RHYTHM & POETRY In this keynote, Wali Shah uses his gift of spoken word poetry and storytelling to have dialogue pertaining to contemporary social issues with students. Wali writes on, and speaks to, issues that matter to students and teachers right now. 15 years old, and labelled at-risk, a teacher introduced him to poetry. Since then, it became an avenue for Wali to share his story. Being Muslim, being Pakistani, and being a teenager wasn’t easy — but with the right mentors and a coping strategy, it became easier. This powerful and informative keynote is poetic, timely, and stems from Wali’s personal narrative growing up as a Peel student. WORKSHOP - USING MUSIC TO BUILD RESILIENCE AND GUT INSTINCT “A painter paints on canvas; Musicians paint their pictures on silence.” This workshop builds up the foundational trust of an elementaryaged student, using music, performance, and music appreciation to help young students foster a self-trusting, solid foundation in themselves. By hearing the struggles others have experienced through music, attendees are challenged to digest some of the real-life resiliency that was made possible by goal-setting and focused work toward a common goal.

WORKSHOP - USING MUSIC TO BUILD A PATHWAY TO POSITIVE SELF-IMAGE

• The “7C’s of Resiliency” set the framework for how Darryn presents this workshop. By associating them with specific songs and text, Darryn presents youngsters with real examples of hard work and resiliency resulting in a deep sense of satisfaction.

“To learn music is to learn a whole new language.” Positive self-image starts from a young age. It is not inherited, it must be learned and understood to be able to work for us later on as challenges arise. In this workshop/live performance, Darryn brings to the spotlight songs that help build better foundations for self-image. Hear acoustic arrangements performed live by host and performing artist Darryn de Souza.

• Using active listening to help in visualization, appreciation, imagination, and outside-the-box thinking and creating musical moments of participation to demonstrate the different feelings elicited by famous songs.

• Brave (Sara Bareilles),

• Stories of young artists who navigated their talents while learning about the industry demonstrates goal-setting and working hard to achieve goals.

• Just The Way You Are (Bruno Mars), • Born This Way (Lady Gaga) • I Am Light (India Arie) *The criteria for song selection is either building or celebrating self-image.

DARRYN DE SOUZA (CONT’D)

Students are challenged to highlight the parts of the songs that produce positive imagery and explore it further where explanation is needed. Short discussion on the meaning can help align understanding that positivity can grow inside us from our own personal beliefs about ourselves. Throughout the performance, Darryn encourages students to be involved in the music, with sections created specifically for call and response, and for soundscape creation, allowing for some rhythmic fun. Music can be a foundational tool in helping young minds to build positive self-image. Understanding and appreciating art around them can be a vehicle to a greater understanding of the power of positive self-image. This workshop is aimed at giving students a clear pathway to positive self-image.

In this workshop, Darryn constructs a case to prove that Pop, Hip Hop and Urban music created a new type of musician: The Producer, to give a voice to those who couldn’t afford to get the arts education to pursue a musical dream. Instead, a new genre of music was created, taking the musicality of the old and remixing into a completely new sound. This workshop is done in tandem with a second workshop leader, a DJ who will perform during the workshop to demonstrate the points being put forward. The goal of this workshop is to connect with students in a creative and unexpected way, and to help young adults recognize that the music of today is very often built on the songs of the past. Kapil is an avid Storyteller, Community Builder, and Podcaster who has been active in telling his stories across Canada for the past few years. Kapil is currently facilitating workshops with high schools and post-secondary institutions across Ontario which focus on helping students become effective communicators, and will offer perspective through the journey of powerful decision making within their life and career. Kapil’s goal with these workshops is to allow students to be open to the idea that career trajectory is not always linear, and your focus in postsecondary education may not always be the career path you choose at the end. It’s very likely and completely normal to work in an industry that is outside of the field you studied. Kapil also educates students and young professionals on the importance of networking and how staying active with your passions can land you the career you desire. Kapil is the Community Manager for Staples Canada’s second fully transformational Coworking space in Oakville, ON. Through his role, Kapil has been invited to many conferences and events to share his expertise, and to educate others on how to organically build a successful and supportive community in both your personal and professional life. Kapil also runs his own storytelling Podcast called “Finding Perspective”, the podcast focuses on interviewing individuals who have gone through extraordinary life experiences and are open to sharing their truth with his viewers. The goal of the podcast is to allow his viewers to step into the realm of someone else’s truth but through their own lenses.

WORKSHOP - BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL AND SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY THAT WILL LAST

WORKSHOP - BUILDING MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS WITH OTHERS THROUGH YOUR STORY

I’ve always been told that it takes a village to raise a child and you can apply that saying to just about anything when it comes to the fundamentals of support systems. Building a successful and supportive community around you is a necessity. As we grow, we are taught that we can do almost anything and everything alone in life. Although I would bet on myself and my capabilities, we are human and the power of unity in progressive thinking can positively impact your personal and processional existence. In this session, I will speak to individuals on how to build your own communities from the ground up, and how to keep investing in those who are in your network. A community is a commitment! I will go over tips on what you can do to attract talent in to your group, and how to retain members within your community.

We have all been through our fair share of challenges, struggles, and experiences that have shaped us to become who we are today. But what is important about these life events, are what we learned from these situations. How many times have you said to yourself “If I had this knowledge, when I was younger, I would’ve been in a different place right now”? We can’t go back in time, but we can certainly use our stories to inspire others and to give others insight. In my opinion, everything happens for a reason, so perhaps the reason we have gone through certain life experiences is to help others. We are all a collection of stories, and stories are what makes the world turn. In this session, I will educate you how to use your truth to help others learn that they are not alone, and they too can overcome whatever challenges they are going through.
