Drive through the wide, tree-lined streets of Tierrasanta, with its beautifully landscaped medians, and you get the feeling that you’re in a special place. Set off by itself, Tierrasanta is ringed by steep canyons that lead down to open spaces of coastal sage scrub. Pathways skirt along canyon rims, allowing residents to enjoy this natural habitat. Originally part of the Mission San Diego de Alcala ranch, Tierrasanta was founded in 1971. It is bounded by Route 52 and MCAS Miramar on the north, Interstate 15 to the west, and the San Diego River and Mission Valley to the south. To the east is the 5,800-acre Mission Trails Regional Park, with easy access at the eastern terminus of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. This hilly community is often referred to as the “Island in the Hills.” Home to more than 37,000 residents, Tierrasanta was one of the first planned communities in San Diego. It’s not unusual to see joggers, mothers pushing strollers, or seniors walking their dogs. Several shopping centers are scattered throughout the area and major shopping centers are a short drive away in Mission Valley. The community has five elementary schools, two middle schools, and Serra High School. According to U.S. News and World Report, in 2016, Serra High ranked #861 in the National Rankings, earning a silver medal. The school has a 99 percent graduation rate. Residents don’t have far to go to find activities. The Tierrasanta Recreation Center features a playground, tennis courts, a basketball court, an eight-lane pool, and a children’s pool with a 30-foot slide. Classes are offered for children, including gymnastics, dance, art, and music. Adults can enjoy yoga, fitness classes, and basketball. This island in the hills offers a peaceful community for its residents that’s close to all San Diego has to offer.
