Cross disciplinary peer learning using ICT - XPLICiT Our project started in September 2014 and has now two years later almost come to an end. The project is financed by the European union. XPLICiT is a school to school project where schools from Denmark, England, Finland and Sweden have been working together. Our project has had 5 main objectives. • Investigating peer learning as a learning methodology • Learn more about methods for creativity and entrepreneurial learning methodology • Improve students ICT competence and secure use of social media. • Learn more about European culture. • Improve students’ language skills. To reach our objectives we have worked together in national and international peer groups, we have met online and in real life during mobilities. We have had coordinators’ meetings in London and Copenhagen and student mobilities with different themes in Finland, Denmark and Sweden. Visit our weebly page at: http://peersandpads.weebly.com/

The London Nautical School United Kingdom The London Nautical School was founded in 1915, as a consequence of the official report into the loss of the “Titanic”. In 1990, it became one of the country’s first 11-18 comprehensive secondary schools for boys to be awarded grant maintained status. In September 1999, we became a Foundation School within the London Borough of Lambeth. The school is situated in Stamford Street on the south bank of the River Thames, in between Blackfriars Bridge and Waterloo Bridge. The London Nautical School is a smaller than average school situated in the heart of London. The school has a unique nautical ethos, is very popular and is heavily oversubscribed with four applications for every available place. It serves a very wide catchment area which stretches throughout London. The school has specialist sports status and has gained a number of prestigious accolades including Healthy Schools Standard and the British Council Gold Award for International Work.

4

The school has a welcoming and harmonious community, where students are happy and safe and make sound academic progress. They behave appropriately and respect the views of others. Through the work associated with the national awards, students have a good understanding of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, participating enthusiastically in sporting activities and physical pursuits, which reflect well the ethos of the Sports College status.

Uotilanrinne Comprehensive School Finland Uotilanrinne Comprehensive School is a school of approx. 460 13-16-year-old-students. Our lower secondary school is situated in the western coast of Finland, in Rauma. Rauma is one of the oldest towns in Finland, and this beautiful Unesco World Heritage small town represents long traditions in shipping and lace manufacturing in Finland. Uotilanrinne Comprehensive School has students in three age levels (7th, 8th and 9th graders) divided into 7 or 8 classes in each age groups. The school has 40 teachers, and 20 other staff members. The school has a long tradition being the school where the students have always come from the surroundings of Rauma; nowadays the students come from 7 different primary schools. We do not have that many students with a foreign background. Instead, our school has a good reputation of receiving and integrating students that have special needs in learning; equal possibilities in learning and tolerance between different learners are the values that our school carries.

Kjellerup Skole Denmark Kjellerup is located in the heart of the peninsula of Jutland. The city of Kjellerup is part of the municipality of Silkeborg. Kjellerup has about 5000 inhabitants. The municipality of Silkeborg has about 90000 inhabitants. The area where Kjellerup is situated is mainly a rural area with small shops and businesses, but there are also small industries. The majority of people living here, mainly, work in the bigger cities Viborg and Silkeborg. Kjellerup is located between these two cities. By car it takes about 15 minutes to go Viborg to the north and about 15 minutes to go to Silkeborg to the south. It is quite easy to go to both Viborg and Silkeborg by bus. Kjellerup School is the only school in the local area, and we therefore have children living in the countryside and children living in the city of Kjellerup. Kjellerup is a low-income to middle income area. Kjellerup School is one of 29 schools in the municipality of Silkeborg. The school has about 710 students. The students vary in age from 5 to 16. Kjellerup School is a comprehensive school. The pupils at school all come from the local area. At school we are about 50 teachers and 12 leisure time teachers. There is one Head and a Deputy Head and a pedagogical leader. The administrative work is managed by 2 secretaries. At school there is a Leisure Time Center. This is for children from school year 0 to 4. There is a school club for children from year 5 to 7. The school day starts at 08.15 am. The youngest children continue school until 14.15pm. The olvvdest pupils 6

finish their school day 15.15 pm. After the school day has finished for the youngest children the majority of them continue in the Leisure Time Center. The Leisure Time Center is open until 5 O’clock. On Fridays it closes at 16.00 pm. At present the school has different areas where we are trying to develop and focus on how we can improve our teaching. • We work on how we can get more physical movement into classes. We think that many children can increase their learning ability if they have the opportunity of physical movement at the same time. It is also a lot of fun. We are appointed as a Danish profile school for movement and exercise. • We work on our ICT skills. We try to think the use of ICT into all our teaching. We recommend that the children bring their own devices to school. • We work on a pre-reading program together with the local kindergartens. In this program we use I pads. In general we have much attention on reading. • We work with innovation and entrepreneurship in our classes. • And we work with different international projects. We work together with a German school where they send students as trainees to us, and we have a Chinese sister school as well. We have at a number of occasions been a host school for teachers from specially China. We are always interested in participating in Erasmus-projects.

Kvarnbyskolan Sweden Kvarnbyskolan is located at the centre part of Mรถlndal. It is a secondary school with students from year 7-9. Our school building, as you can see have a beautiful exterior. Kvarnbyskolan was built 90 years ago. In our school we have 450 pupils divided in 5 classes for every year and 35 teachers. We don't have any after school activities but Kvarnbyskolan has a music profile. That means that some classes have more music classes and play in bands, write and perform plays etc. Kvarnbyskolan has taken part in a number of Eu-projects. For this project we started off in 2014 with 20 students in year 7. Pupils from every class took part. We have been working with the different tasks once a week since the project started.

7

Coordinators meeting UK The mobility is planned to introduce the project and be familiar with the tasks as well as the programs that will be used throughout the project. The other aim of the mobility is to organise practical ICT training for the partners. The training helped the teachers to use various ICT tools to produce movies, newsletters as well as use the project portal.

8

During the mobility we had the opportunity to discuss the project management, general rules, interim and final reports as well as planning the future mobilities and trans-national meetings. Part of the training was “in house and at least 15 teachers attended.

Mobility Finland Saturday 18th of April Our guests arrived to Rauma. Meeting the guests in the school yard. Everyone was excited and it was unbelievable. Sunday 19th of April We all met in Old Rauma and started our city orienteering in color groups. Then the host families took their guests and ate with them. After that it was the time to go to Helmiranta. There we were swimming in the ice cold sea and the guests got to try the Finnish sauna. There was also two hot tubs where you could just be in warm water. We ate sausages and played some games together. We had a great time. Monday 20th of April First day of school. The school day started at 9 AM. It was very exciting to bring the foreigner guests to a Finnish school. Then we split up in two groups. The other one visited the home economics class and made Carelian pies while the other group played games to get to know each other better. The games were really funny and we laughed a lot. After this all the colour groups started writing their own script for the movie. Then all the groups represented the scripts and we chose the best one that we would produce. We got to leave the school a bit earlier than usual. Everyone spent the evening with the host families. Tuesday 21st of April In the morning we went to school again. Everyone chose what they would like to do in the movie project. The

options were making of, producers, actors, music team, tech-team and animation team. The script writers started working on the script more closely. The tech-team started learning how filming works. The animation team made their animation characters out of paper. If someone didn’t have anything to do, they could try to learn how to make lace. The making of team was filming the whole thing. After lunch the filming project started. The animation team started doing their animation and everything was on full-speed. The evening we spent in the host families. Wednesday 22nd of April The filming project continued. The music team produced music in music class. Half of the tech-team started to edit the movie. We printed our hands with colorful paints next to our project logo on our school wall. In the evening most of us came to play to the school yard before our farewell party. We ate pizza and watched the trailer of our movie. We also watched the animation and the making of film. Some of us gave speeches about the week and everything that has happened. Thursday 23rd of April The host families and their guests gathered at the school 7.50 AM. Everyone was hugging and saying goodbyes over and over again. Many of the girls started crying. Then the bus came. It was so sad and our guests had to leave Rauma. We waved at them and one boy even ran after the bus.

In cooperation with the head of communications, Lars Hamann, and the dissemination inspector, Mette Hanghøi from the museum, we had written a case. “Branding Competition - How to attract more adolescents in the age 13 - 18 years?” There were certain demands, that should be fulfilled, and by the end of the week, the students should present a synopsis and a product.

20

The students worked very hard, committed and had a lot of creative and innovative ideas. The products covered a wide field from innovative playgrounds to interactive showrooms. What I have learned by being in this project? Well I can tell that what I have learned is that I have got all kind of friends no matter culture or religion, colour or languages as long you open your heart. To be in this project makes me consider all the times I actually doubted this. It has turned down all my prejudices and surprised me in a positive way. vI feel that I have learned to communicate better with people from abroad and learnt how to work with them in a different way. But the best is all the great new friends I got now. I can only say that this Erasmus project is a lifetime experience for me.

Mobility Sweden The mobility is the last and focused on this semester’s task which is language learning. The peer groups have among other things, during this semester read children’s stories and fairytales from the different countries, The legend of King Arthur, Pippi Longstocking, Moomins and The girl with the matches. After reading these stories they have written a text inspired by the stories but with a modern twist.

The Swedish students made a walking tour of places of interest in Gothenburg to learn more about Gothenburg and it´s history. We have also experienced different types of food when the students made famous dishes from their countries.

Once in Sweden, the students worked with their texts, and wrote, filmed and edited a book trailer. We have also been doing peer group activities in “Universeum -science centre”. Here our students also took part in a workshop where the made their own “drawing robots”. 25

What have we learnt so far….. Our main objective in this project was to investigate peer learning as a teaching methodology. To achieve our aims and objectives we have tried different ways to implement peer learning in international project groups and as well as within the participating schools. We have tried different short peer learning exercises such as; • Group problem solving activities • Peer assessment • Designing workshops for classmates and younger students.

companies understand as cooperation with schools can be mutually beneficial. Learn more about European culture and improve students´ language skills. During the mobilities we have learnt more about culture in our project countries in many different ways as all our student have stayed in host families they have experienced family life in a foreign country. English is the project language so all students have had the opportunity to practice English throughout the duration of the project. We have concluded that the student mobilities and the opportunity to meet other young people and share experiences is important. Our students have practiced their language skills and have made friends as well as memories which they will cherish for life.

• Teacher led workshops for colleagues. We have concluded that peer learning is a great way of engaging students and that the peer learning methodology works well in combination with other more conventional teaching methods. Improve students’ ICT competence and secure use of social media. We started the project with a course in Internet ethics as cyber bullying is a big problem in our society; this has been an ongoing activity in the schools During the project we have used social media to communicate with each other. We have done via conducting online meetings and have produced a number of digital products such as e-books, movies, podcasts, and questionnaires. Products which have then been shared on our web page www.peersandpads.weebly.com

ROSE-MARIE CONWAY

Project coordinator

We conclude that the use of ICT tools facilitates active learning in a creative way. We found that students already knew a lot about the use of social media but needed to learn better tools to deal with online bullying. Improve methods for creativity and entrepreneurial learning Entrepreneurial learning, as taught in our Danish mobility, sought to improve students´ creativity skills. We found that students are very creative and are often better than adults at coming up with unconventional solutions. This result is something we have to make 31
