MISSION STATEMENT As a college preparatory diocesan Catholic high school, Rosary Academy empowers the mind, body, and spirit of each young woman in a transformative educational experience. Guided by the Blessed Mother, Rosary Academy embraces and challenges its students with an innovative instructional curriculum to achieve academic success and ignite the call to serve the dear neighbor.

Message FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear members of the Rosary Community,

SHAWNA L. PAUTSCH

I am extremely blessed and excited to begin my tenure as Head of School at Rosary Academy. The rich history and traditions pay respect to the past and will move Rosary forward to a bright future. There is both excitement and comfort to be found in new beginnings. The 2017-2018 school year promises to bring great growth. It is time to try new things and nurture our students’ minds, bodies, and spirits. Sharing of your time, talent, and treasure has contributed to our past success. Your continued investments will allow for more dynamic growth. This publication comes to you at a time of thanksgiving. We give thanks for your abundant grace. As you read The Regium, you will see highlights on The Rosary Fund, our annual giving program; Cracked Crab; Red Wine & Gold; and the Royal Golf Classic. Your generous donations contribute to continuing our academic excellence and empowering our next generation of women leaders. Just as nature yields its harvest with energy from the silent work of the Earth, so does the Mission of Rosary depend on the programs and projects that support it. As an investor in the school’s mission, you help to create a rich harvest of student achievement and institutional progress. Your commitment provides this constant growth. Through God’s ever-abiding grace and wisdom and with your support Rosary will be fortified. With gratitude,

Shawna L. Pautsch, MA

COACHING OUR

New Teachers

In order to provide more instructional support for our teachers, Rosary added the Mentor Teacher/Instructional Coach position for the 2017-2018 school year. Andrea Barclay, a 17-year member of the Rosary faculty and the English Department Chair, steps into this role as well as continuing to teach AP English Language and Composition. The Mentor Teacher and Instructional Coach serves our new and second-year teachers as they navigate their path at Rosary Academy. Along with offering guidance on what makes our culture unique, the Mentor Teacher and Instructional Coach helps our teachers develop more effective instructional strategies and assessments, ensuring the success of the school’s rigorous academic program. The Mentor Teacher and Instructional Coach also helps teachers integrate useful educational technology, develop more efficient lesson plans, manage the daily classroom environment, and engage more students in discussion and other classroom activities. Using varied methods ranging from teaching demonstrations to informal observations, the Mentor Teacher and Instructional Coach seeks to provide our new faculty with specific and constructive feedback necessary to their development. Before the 2017-2018 school year, Rosary hired 11 new teachers, making it a record-breaking year of growth. Some teachers came to Rosary with a long tenure of experience and will utilize the Mentor Teaching and Instructional Coach in a more collaborative format. With over 25 years of high school teaching experience, our physics teacher John Foubl shared, “I feel very fortunate to have wound up at Rosary. The administration, faculty, staff, students, and parents have all been extremely supportive. It’s great to be at a place where collaboration and collegiality are not only valued, but encouraged.” Other new faculty members, such as English teacher, Ryan Stegink, will utilize the Mentor Teacher and Instructional Coach in a more traditional format, seeking strategies to improve and assess student

learning. He said, “I have several goals as a teacher at Rosary Academy: I want to help each student develop critical thinking skills, a sense of curiosity, and a heart for service; I want to help each student grow as both a reader and a writer through the work we do in class; I want to take risks and try new teaching methods as a teacher; and I want to collaborate with my colleagues and to learn from them so that I may be a better teacher to my students.” The Mentor Teacher and Instructional Coach position was created to help teachers accomplish exactly these types of goals. In addition to adding the Mentor Teacher and Instructional Coach support position, Rosary Academy brings academic excellence to its campus by encouraging faculty members to attend professional development seminars and conferences. Currently, all AP teachers have signed on for College Board workshops in their areas. In addition, the entire World Language Department will attend a conference about motivation and learning sponsored by the Bureau of Education and Research. With student success as the ultimate goal, Rosary looks forward to the exciting and productive energy brought forth by both faculty and staff.

Mr. John Foubl, physics teacher

SERVING THE

Dear Neighbor Rosary Academy was founded in 1965 by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and administered by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. The mission of the Sisters “is a participation in the mission of Jesus: to bring all people into union with God and with one another, serving them according to their needs and their own various gifts, in all the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, [and]…strive to be mindful of the diverse and unmet needs of the dear neighbor.” Rosary strives to provide students with an education beyond the classroom walls with a focus on serving the community and addressing the causes of injustice. Packaging and delivering over 4,000 food items for Second Harvest Food Bank

has partnered with Crittenton, an organization in Fullerton that helps women, children, and families piece their lives back together. Also, as our nation recently experienced a number of national disasters, our students have raised $4,000 for Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to help those who are suffering and rebuild their lives. Additional organizations Rosary partners with include the Isaiah House, Higher Ground, Faley Games – Special Olympics, Crosson Cancer Center at St. Jude, and Crossroads DaVita Dialysis Center.

Rosary students hosted a Valentine’s Day party for children at Crittenton Services in Fullerton

Last spring, Rosary launched the Royal Service Squad within Campus Ministry to give students more opportunities to volunteer and give back to their community. In addition to a variety of service clubs, like Make-A-Wish and Meals on Wheels, the school

Students collected over 514 pairs of shoes and 824 pairs of socks for the homeless

A NOTE FROM

Athletics

Rosary’s Athletics program puts the best attributes of our Royals into practice: leadership, determination, teamwork, and skill. Across 12 sports competing in the nationally recognized Trinity League and the CIF Southern Section, Royal teams test themselves against the best, battling to succeed and inspiring their teammates to do the same. Winning championships and securing spots on college rosters are very real goals for these Royals, but nothing compares to the sisterhood borne of early mornings, late nights, and jubilant finishes. Our newest sport, traditional competitive cheer, has previously brought national

championships home. The basketball, softball, water polo, golf, and soccer squads are regular tenants of the Orange County top 10; our track & field and swimming organizations consistently produce individual league champions and CIF Masters qualifiers; and our tennis, volleyball, cross country, and lacrosse teams continue our tradition of sending 30% of graduating senior athletes onto college teams – this year including our first two collegiate beach volleyball athletes! Rosary Athletics helps student-athletes find a niche where athletic success can be an exhilarating complement to the Royal experience.

Alumnae TESTIMONIALS Rosary prepared me for success in college and life by teaching me to remain focused on what is important: career, family, and goals. Rosary’s holistic approach to education also equipped me with a strong base in world religions, literature, and the sciences so that I always feel confident in a myriad of professional and personal scenarios. Sylvia Lourdes Ayass Senior Associate Attorney, Hedayati Law Group, P.C. NYC Rosary instilled in me a sense of discipline, motivation, and caring for those around me that has benefitted me greatly. Rosary not only prepared me scholastically for life after graduation, but it also gave me friendships that have lasted decades, and which bring me joy, comfort, understanding, and love every day of my life. Through Red & Gold, Tri-School Theatre productions, and Mock Trial competitions, I discovered a love of theatre which eventually led me to a career on Broadway as a Theatrical Wardrobe Supervisor. Moira MacGregor Conrad ‘86 Broadway Theatrical Wardrobe Supervisor Life has been a constant evolution of both incredible joy and challenge. Rosary allowed me the space to develop a sense of personal identity strong enough to navigate that road. I have many a time re-learned how to believe in myself via my Rosary mentors. This continues to push me past what I thought I was capable of. Erica Manrriquez, MD Resident Physician at UC San Francisco My time at Rosary was spent in the company of dozens of confident and intelligent women. As young female athletes, scholars, artists, and friends, we encouraged each other to be our best selves both in and out of the classroom. We pushed each other to think critically, to be curious about the world beyond what we already knew, and to live purpose-driven lives with grace and self-respect. I’ve watched these same friends become strong leaders in their respective fields and in their households, and we look back on our time at Rosary as a truly unique and formative experience. Rosary Academy

Rosary was and continues to be a key element to my success and happiness in life – both professionally and personally. Whether participating in Red & Gold, numerous leadership opportunities, or Tri-School Theatre, Rosary’s all-female environment gave me the strength and confidence to believe in myself, try anything, and ultimately succeed. Rosary laid the foundation to prosper in college, law school, and beyond. My confidence and loyalty in Rosary will extend further as I prepare my own daughter for high school…I look forward to the day when I can proudly call her a Royal. Carrie J. Nocella Director, Government Relations, The Disneyland® Resort Collaboration is absolutely necessary in the entertainment industry. Red & Gold played a huge part in why I am successful at working well with others in a professional setting. The importance of “sisterhood” learned at Rosary has helped me utilize my teamwork skills in my field. Clarice Ordaz ‘10 Dancer/Actress The all-female environment of Rosary allowed me to find myself, becoming a confident and assertive young woman. Rosary truly is a college-prep school that instills time management, leadership, and discipline skills, all of which have allowed me to graduate college in three years. Yes, three years -- all the while participating in collegiate cross country, working as an Embry Riddle Ambassador in the Admissions Office, and participating in a sorority. Rosary enables you to stay focused on your goals and keep what is important close to your heart – sisterhood, family, friends, career, and most importantly, God. Letter FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT

Dear Rosary Community:

KRISTIE RUEFF O’CAMPO

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve at Rosary Academy, and I am beyond thankful to work with our loyal parents, parents of alumnae, alumnae, and friends. The generous support of our community’s time, treasures, and talents is vital to Rosary and makes a direct impact on every student. Each gift, no matter the size, makes a difference in sustaining and improving the school. Over the years and with your support, we have provided campus enhancements with the Learning and Enrichment Center, Strength and Conditioning Center, and Chapel of Our Lady. We have also grown our Center 4 Learning (C4L) to provide learning support services, increased our tuition assistance funds, launched the Royal Merit Grant for incoming students, and provided professional development opportunities to our faculty and staff. Through the Rosary community’s generosity, we have increased our net profit with our fundraising events from $166,800 in 2015-2016 to $203,300 in 2016-2017. Each event is uniquely different and provides an opportunity to build community and support the school. Cracked Crab is a family-style feast that supports the Rosary Fund, athletics, and the spirit program; Red Wine & Gold is a “taste-of” evening that supports tuition assistance; and the Royal Golf Classic supports our athletic program. We are truly blessed for your continuous support and attendance at our events. In a time of many philanthropic opportunities, you have chosen to make a meaningful and direct impact on our Royals. Thank you for allowing Rosary Academy to thrive and advancing the mission of our school. May God continue to bless you and your family.

Kristie Rueff O’Campo ’02, MEd *Please note that the gifts recognized include gifts from July 2014-June 2017. We strive to publish accurate information. If your name has been misspelled, omitted, or listed incorrectly, we sincerely apologize and ask you to contact the advancement department at (714) 879-6302.

Giving OPPORTUNITIES THE ROSARY FUND

WAYS TO GIVE

Tuition alone does not cover the cost of educating a student. Annual giving to The Rosary Fund enhances and sustains a Rosary education for current and future Royals. Contributions support new coursework, programming, support services, campus beautification and infrastructure enhancements, faculty and staff professional development, employee retention, and daily operations.

The Rosary Fund runs concurrent with the school’s fiscal year of July 1 to June 30. You may give at any time during the year; however, a gift or pledge early in the school year supports planning and builds momentum. You may make a pledge with the enclosed envelope or submit online at www.rosaryacademy.org/give.

WHAT MAKES A

Rosary Royal?

SHE ACTS HER AGE. A table of freshmen competing in a spontaneous dance off during lunch, music thumping as a crowd gathers around them. A trio of friends sitting on the lawn between classes, their laughter joyful and carefree. Students jumping up and down on swaying gym bleachers, euphoric in red and gold face paint as their Royals win. At Rosary, girls stay girls longer. Real life can wait. SHE EMBRACES HER FAITH. She goes to church with her family on Sundays,

and she attends the Rosary Father-Daughter Masses. But something is different now. When they talk about religion at Rosary, her heart stirs. Her faith feels more alive, more personal. Her relationship with God is playing a meaningful role in her everyday life. It is reshaping her decisions away from campus. She had hoped to become a better student at Rosary. She never expected to become a better person.

SHE FINDS HER VOICE. Her friends choose other high schools. Everything at Rosary

is new to her. But the faculty go out of the way to engage her. She begins to see them as mentors. She bonds with the other girls like long-lost sisters. For the first time in memory, no one is judging her. She speaks up in class. She asks incisive questions. She debates big ideas. Rosary is cultivating a part of her she never knew existed. She is finding her voice. It is true and it is strong. She will never let it go.

SHE THINKS DIFFERENTLY. Collaborative. Competitive. Confident. Creative. Funny. Humble. Independent. Innovative. Intelligent. Kind. Loyal. Open-minded. Optimistic. Passionate. Resilient. Spiritual. She is all these things and more. She embraces Rosary’s traditions, but she is not a traditional thinker. While others prepare for the future she is creating it. When someone asks “Why?” she asks “Why not?” As she walks on stage to address the audience at Red & Gold, she is reminded that Rosary isn’t a school for girls. It’s a school for women who think differently.

SHE IS FEARLESS. Her expert teachers challenge her to take risks in the

classroom, even if that means sometimes making mistakes. So she designs robots from sensors, motors, and screws. She critiques black and white photography at the Getty. She experiments with programming, recoding syntax into syntactic sugar. She is a big sister to wide-eyed new freshmen. She studies AP French. Ce n’est pas facile. She does not always succeed, but she is always learning. She is a fearless young woman.

SHE INSPIRES. The acceptance letters arrive one by one. USC. Marist. Harvard. She receives letters from the best colleges in the country. Some day, she will lead men and women in the U.S. Navy, her decisions changing lives on land and sea. She will write movies people watch on nervous first dates and rainy Sunday afternoons. She will take the hand of an anxious mother in the emergency room and she will tell her that her child is going to be fine – and then make it so. She is a Rosary Woman and she is inspiring. SHE IS A MORE COMPLETE WOMAN. Some of what

she has learned at Rosary cannot be measured by a test. Here, she has learned to be a more thoughtful daughter; a more affectionate sister; a more loyal friend; a more empathetic human being. She has learned to stand for those who can’t stand for themselves, and to try to recognize the face of God in the strangers she meets. She remembers St. Paul’s words: “But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.” She strives to live this kind of love. She is a more complete woman.
