DESIGN AS A TOOL FOR CHANGE Design is not only about aesthetics. It can also affect the quality and energy of the spaces where we work and learn. Our spatial surroundings determine how we feel, what we experience and learn, and how we meet and interact. Interior design is not just about the distribution of functions and compo nents. Art and design can spark new ways of thinking and acting, and that is what this book is about: how we can make a difference using art and design as active instruments for change and development. The physical environments that surround us in our daily lives have a strong influence on our
everyday wellbeing and development – at work, in school, at home or in the urban space. Dull office spaces prevent the development of new perspectives and put a damper on the em ployees’ passion. Rigid horseshoe formations in classrooms lead to uninvolved and unfocused students, and grey concrete, devoid of life and inspiration, makes for a dull city without a sense of identity. This book presents a select range projects from the art and design studio Rosan Bosch. Whether the venue is a school, an urban space or a workplace, the message is the same: Art, architecture and design can initiate changes that make the world a better place.

DESIGN SOM REDSKAB TIL FORANDRING Design kan mange ting: Ikke alene kan godt design gøre verden til et pænere sted – det kan også gøre verden til et bedre sted. Rum er ikke bare fysiske steder, vi opholder os i og bevæger os igennem. Rum bestem mer, hvordan vi har det, hvordan vi oplever og lærer, og hvordan vi mødes og interagerer med hinanden. Kunst og design kan skabe nye måder at tænke og handle på, og det er det, denne bog handler om: hvordan man kan gøre en forskel ved at bruge kunst og design som aktive redskaber for forandring og udvikling. De fysiske miljøer, der omgiver os i vores dag ligdag, har stor betydning for, hvordan vi trives
og udvikler os i vores hverdag – om det er på arbejdet, i skolen, derhjemme eller ude i byens rum. Dræbende kontormiljøer lukker af for nye perspektiver og slukker medarbejdernes gejst. Rigide hesteskoopstillinger i folkeskolen skaber uengagerede og ukoncentrerede elever, og grå beton uden liv og inspiration gør byen trist og identitetsløs. I denne bog præsenteres en række udvalgte projekter fra kunst- og designbureauet Rosan Bosch. Hvad enten det drejer sig om en skole, et byrum eller en arbejdsplads er budskabet det samme: Kunst, arkitektur og design kan starte en forandring, der gør verden til at bedre sted at være.

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NORTHERN DENMARK Six-metre tall red trees have sprouted through the tables in the common area. An interactive digital sculpture floats in the foyer like a planet in space, and green, yellow and blue patterns on the walls serve as graphic landmarks throughout the building. The University College of Northern Denmark has been given a distinctive design that supports the achievements of its visions. University College of Northern Denmark (UCN) aims to be a leading provider of future-oriented education. Rosan Bosch has developed a design that ties the education programmes together and promotes interaction, cooperation and knowledge sharing. With its new interior, UCN now has a learning environment that facilitates new ways of working and learning for students, lecturers and consultants. Cave-like lounge areas encourage relaxed interactions and focused concentration. Interactive platforms enable knowledge sharing across disciplinary boundaries, and the common areas are incorporated into the course activities, which gives students greater insight into each other’s everyday activities. Everything is tied together by graphic elements in wallpaper designs and collages that act as identity markers for the individual programmes. The new interior design at UCN was developed with the goal of facilitating cooperation and com munication as key aspects of learning. In the centre of building one finds the “Planet”, a huge digital sculpture that serves as a communication platform connecting the many education programmes offered at UCN. The “Planet” is a floating interactive installation consisting of digital monitors and surfaces for displaying film clips related to the various programmes. The sculpture serves both an involving and an informative purpose and links the students together across disciplinary boundaries. The new interior has given UCN a distinct profile with inviting common areas that highlight both internal and external activities. The spatial design also promotes the educational principles and serves as an active instrument of learning and development in everyday activities. En interaktiv digital skulptur svæver som en planet over foyergulvet, og på væggene skaber grønne, gule og blå mønstre grafiske pejlemærker på tværs af bygningen. University College Nordjylland har fået et markant design, der skal være med til at føre institutionens visioner ud i livet. University College Nordjylland (UCN) har som målsætning at være førende inden for fremtidsorien teret undervisning. Nu har institutionen fået nye fysiske rammer, der skal være med til at føre vi sionerne ud i livet. Rosan Bosch har udviklet et design, der bygger bro mellem uddannelserne og sætter interaktion, samarbejde og videndeling i højsædet. Med sit nye interiør har UCN fået et læringsmiljø, der giver studerende, undervisere og konsulent er mulighed for at arbejde og lære på nye måder. Huleagtige loungeområder indbyder til hyggeligt samvær og fordybelse. Interaktive platforme åbner op for videndeling på tværs, og fællesarealerne inddrages i undervisningen, så de studerende i højere grad får indblik i hinandens hverdag. Det hele bindes sammen af grafiske elementer i tapeter og collager, der fungerer som identitetsmarkører for de enkelte uddannelser De nye rammer på UCN er udviklet til at understøtte samarbejde og kommunikation som en central del af uddannelsesforløbet. Midt i bygningen findes ”Planeten”, en kæmpe digital skulptur, der fun gerer som formidlingsplatform for institutionens mange uddannelser. ”Planeten” er en fritsvæv ende interaktiv installation bestående af digitale skærme og flader, hvor der kan vises små filmklip relateret til de forskellige uddannelser. Skulpturen har en både inddragende og informativ funktion og er med til at knytte de studerende sammen på tværs af studieretninger. UCN har med sit nye interiør fået en markant profil med indbydende fællesarealer, der synliggør institutionens aktiviteter såvel internt som eksternt. Det rumlige design understøtter desuden de pædagogiske principper og fungerer som et aktivt værktøj for læring og udvikling i det daglige. ALBERTSLUND SOUTH In the housing complex Albertslund South, an anonymous pedestrian tunnel that felt unsafe has been transformed into an artistic experience that invites passers-by to take a look underground. The glass sculpture “The Kaleidoscope” and other artistic and recreational initiatives have created an attractive local environment and enhanced the area’s sense of identity. As part of a larger catalogue of ideas for Albertslund South, Rosan Bosch has developed a number of initiatives that contribute to the positive development of this neighbourhood. In close dialogue with the residents, three identity projects were developed that serve as new landmarks in the area. Art has come to play an active role in the urban space, and the recreational initiatives bring the local residents together in new ways. The “Canal Mountains” form a recreational activity park that brings children and teenagers from the area together by encouraging ballgames, play and physical activity. The activity park has become a natural meeting place in the local area, and the manmade trees and the white cube lend the space a prominent and distinctive identity. Two striking art and design installations similarly serve as new landmarks in the urban space. A giant glass sculpture shaped as a kaleidoscope has been placed inside a light well for a concrete pedestrian tunnel. Above ground, the colourful glass mosaic serves as a visible light decoration, and below ground, the mosaic creates a beautiful and fascinating play of light on the floors and walls of the tunnel. A custom-designed poster pillar with luminescent glass panels in a variety of colours is another distinctive landmark in the area. The poster pillar also gives the local residents a place to leave notes and messages for each other. These works of art have become new landmarks that make it easier to navigate the area. In combination with the recreational initiatives they have transformed areas in Albertslund South that formerly felt unsafe, turning them into positive sites and thus acting as catalysts for positive development in the area. ALBERTSLUND SYD I Albertslund Syd er en anonym og utryg gangtunnel blevet forvandlet til en kunstnerisk oplevelse, der frister forbipasserende til at tage en tur ned under jorden. Glasskulpturen ”Kalejdoskopet” har sammen med en række andre kunstneriske og rekreative tiltag skabt et attraktivt nærmiljø og styrket bydelens identitetsfølelse. Som del af et større idékatalog for Albertslund Syd har Rosan Bosch udviklet en række tiltag, der bidrager til bydelens positive udvikling. I tæt dialog med borgerne er der udviklet tre identitets projekter, som skaber nye pejlemærker i byen. Kunsten har fået en aktiv rolle i byens rum, og de rekreative initiativer bringer bydelens borgere sammen på nye måder. I ”Kanalbjergene” er der blevet skabt en aktivitetsplads, der samler børn og unge fra området ved at invitere til boldspil, leg og bevægelse. Aktivitetspladsen er blevet et naturligt samlingssted i nærområdet, og de kunstfærdige træer og den hvide kube giver pladsen en markant og fremtræ dende identitet. To markante kunst- og designinstallationer har på tilsvarende vis skabt nye pejlemærker i byens rum. En kæmpe glasskulptur med form som et kalejdoskop er blevet placeret i en lysskakt i en betontunnel. Over jorden danner installationens farvede glasmosaik en synlig lysudsmykning, og under jorden i tunnelen skaber mosaikken et flot og fascinerende lysspil på gulv og vægge. På samme måde skaber en specialdesignet plakatsøjle med lysende glasflader i forskellige farver et markant blikfang i bydelen. Plakatsøjlen gør det samtidig muligt for kvarterets beboere at efter lade beskeder og opslag til hinanden. Kunstværkerne er blevet nye pejlemærker, der gør det let at navigere i området. Sammen med de rekreative tiltag har kunstværkerne forvandlet anonyme og utrygge pletter i Albertslund Syd til positive steder og bidraget til at skabe en positiv udvikling i lokalområdet.
