PROJECT STATEMENT Background The New York Times has published an editorial titled “The Abstinence-Only Delusion.” This editorial talks about how it is foolish for schools to rely on abstinenceonly sex eduation as a means to reduce teen pregnancies and STD’s. The federal government has been giving funds and grants to states and community organizations to forbid the promotion of contraceptive use. However, at least nine states have decided to give up federal matching funds because the abstinence-only sex education appears to be ineffective. This editorial is in need of an illustration.
Key Benefit The main key benefit would be a reminder to adults that most teens will not remain abstinent until marriage. Reasons Why People need to wake up to reality that what may be an ideological solution is not the most practical solution. Tone The tone should be satirical.
Target Audiences The target audience is people who read the New York Times. Objectives The objective is to point out that it is foolish for adults to believe that most teens are going to stay abstinent just because of “abstinence-only” programs. Obstacles Obstacles include religious people with a bias toward abstinence until marriage and biased studies which talk about how contraception fails.
