From The Editor in Chief

It’s that time again! The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and everyone is making plans for what is typically the “hottest” holiday of the year. I especially love the kind of freedom that persists in the wide variety of ways people choose to celebrate this occasion. There’s no assumption that you must spend time with your family— like at Thanksgiving—and there isn’t the obligatory gift list that must be made and checked twice, as there is during the Christmas season. It’s a time when we get to relax, have some fun, and enjoy doing—well, whatever it is we like to do. For me, I like to find a pool of water, relax under the shade of an umbrella, and lie docile for a few hours just knowing I have no responsibilities for at least one day. Growing up, I was a “water bug,” so to speak, and I would spend many days each summer at the community pool in my small hometown. I remember that each year on the Fourth, the atmosphere at the pool was especially lively, because families from all over the town would bring extra food, including homemade ice cream and slices of watermelon, the fruit du jour. Looking back, I now fully understand the meaning of the phrase “the good ole days.” I can’t get over how fast time seems to pass, and now so many days I took for granted have long since become just a treasured memory. If I could go back in time for just a quick visit to any day, I think July 4, 1975, tops my list. It was a time when I had very few cares in the world, my family was all in one place, and it seemed as though life would always be easy and carefree. You may have noticed that I often use this space to reminisce, and I think it’s because I like to share with you what has made me who I am, where I come from, and how life has shaped my thinking. Unfortunately, in the present day, we can’t seem to turn on our computers or pick up a newspaper without being bombarded by the latest bad news. For you, our valued readers, I hope you will find each issue of At Home in Arkansas to be a bright, positive, and inspirational respite. As I always say, we are so fortunate to have amazing talent and design right here in the Natural State—the place where we are all making our own special memories every day—and it’s our pleasure to share these stories with you.

Happy Fourth of July!

For many, the Spa City is a respite for rest, relaxation, and fun! The shores of Lake Hamilton offer not only peace and quiet, but also plenty of opportunities to let the good times roll. EATS & SWEETS For fresh and innovative fare, we suggest dropping into Café 1217 (501318-1094, cafe1217.net) where founder, owner, and head chef Diana Bratton offers soups, salads, sandwiches, and entrees that will delight even the most discerning palate. The menu changes monthly to continue to offer diners new options reflective of what’s in-season. When we dined there in June, we particularly enjoyed the Shrimp Cobb Salad, the House Smoked Banana Leaf Pork Sandwich, and a piece of strawberry pie from the dessert case. If you’re in the mood for seafood, there’s no better place than Cajun Boilers (501-767-5695, cajunboilers. com). Serving both lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers authentic Cajun dishes such as crawfish étoufée,

boudin, and Catfish Chalmette along with fresh oysters, fish, and peeland-eat shrimp. They can also cater to a crowd. Contact them for more information about hosting your next event or meeting at this well-loved Hot Springs restaurant. LOCAL FINDS Along Central Avenue, you’ll see an abundance of locally owned boutiques for both fashion and home décor. We suggest making Accessory Gallery and Sparkle (501-321-9168; facebook.com/shopag) your first stop. These stocked shops are a go-to source for the well-dressed woman. The two boutiques (which are connected to one another) offer clothing for a casual lunch or date night, as well as everyday wear. Plus, they have shoes, scarves, purses, and an excellent selection of jewelry to

complete your look. Their newest lines include Comfy, Lysse, Zenzii jewelry, and Mycra Pac rain jackets. Be sure to check out their Facebook page for the latest arrivals. Spruce Up the Shed A backyard storage shed might not be top of mind when you’re considering party venues. However, for Daniel Keeley, owner of Northwest-Arkansasbased DK Design, it seemed like a natural choice. When his clients, who live in the heart of Fayetteville and frequently host tailgates for Razorback football games, moved into this the circa 1900 Southern-style home, he seized the opportunity to transform the property’s shed into a small—but fully functional— space for cozy gatherings any time of year. Transform your own outbuilding or garage by wiring it for electricity, adding windows or additional doors to bring in light, installing new flooring, and/or painting the walls and exterior. Keeley placed the main dining table just outside of the shed, so guests could enjoy the garden (which he also designed). This choice allowed for plenty of space to serve the food inside the shed. Windsorstyle chairs, hand-cast from aluminum, anchor the ends of the table to lend an Americana feel. Below: Peonies, picked fresh from Lovejoy Farms in Winslow and arranged by Fayetteville’s Flora, add a pop of red to the setting. 36 At Home in Arkansas | July 2015

Add Durable—and Desirable— Furnishings “It’s a little bit of fantasy and totally unexpected, but in such a natural setting,” Keeley says of this shed’s furniture, art, and everyday accessories. Comfortable, outdoor pieces—all of which are stylish enough to be used in the home’s interior—give the shed an approachable, laid-back feel. For example, a heavy sisal rug covers the floor and a weathered wood table offers a place

for guests to sit or to set up a buffet. These pieces juxtapose with the shiny, elegance of the brass light fixtures and the contemporary art seen on the back wall. When it comes to your own space, consider your style and make the look one that’s reflective of you—and that coordinates with the rest of your home. Whether you’re hosting on a patio, front lawn, or in a shed, also be sure to consider your guests’ comfort, and select and arrange your furnishings accordingly.

Make It Festive While some of the shed’s furnishings naturally lent themselves to an all-

American celebration, Keeley added accessories to remind revelers of the reason for the occasion. “I wanted [this party] to be patriotic, but not totally expected,” Keeley says of the décor additions. For example, a custom table runner and pillows—made from outdoor fabric—bring in blue and white along with a star motif, while other accents, such as a garden stool and bright peonies, offer a pop of red to complete the U.S.A.-inspired palette. Look for items you may already have around the house, such as an American flag, red, white, or blue lanterns, and potted plants to bring the décor to life in a subtle and understated way.

Mix Up the Menu While barbecuing may be a traditional way to spend the day, consider making fruits and vegetables the star of the party. They’ll make a beautiful, inseason addition to your fare. Sammy Townsend, who owns Fayetteville’s Bouchee Bistro along with Justin Calvert and Vince Pinalto, created the “classic pairings of sweet and salty” for this menu. When it comes to your selections, choose items that are readily available and easily prepared (or made ahead of time), and be sure to offer something for every taste. Summer Salad INGREDIENTS 2 bell peppers, halved 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved or chopped 2 cucumbers, sliced Ÿ cup olive oil Salt and pepper to taste Splash of balsamic vinegar PREPARATION Use a grill to cook the peppers, flipping once during roasting to get nice grill marks on both sides of the vegetable. Remove from grill, and chop into bite-sized pieces. Place tomatoes, grilled peppers, and cucumbers in a bowl, and drizzle liberally with extra virgin olive oil. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and vinegar. Toss the ingredients and serve at room temperature. Note: If a grill is not available, you can roast the vegetables directly on the open flame of a cooktop, or cook in a 400°F oven for 20 minutes.

hen you think of a dream summer vacation, you most likely envision warm weather, family and friends, and water. For a young Jonesboro family, these elements were high on the list, but having a destination that was close to home trumped them all. “My husband doesn’t get much time off. Most people build a lake house—we built our lake house here in our backyard where we can enjoy it any time,” the homeowner says. After living away for years, the couple moved back to the Jonesboro area into a house they loved, and looked forward to adding a pool in the backyard. There was just one problem: the yard’s sloped terrain. Enter Nicky Ellis of Tallulah Pools, Inc. “It was my dream to have a pool, but I was afraid the land wouldn’t allow for it. We had seen some of Nick’s work around town in magazines, and he never once acted like it couldn’t be done,” the homeowner recalls. Ellis consulted with the couple on their vision for a “natural pool,” addressed the drainage routing and landscape changes that would be necessary to accommodate the pool and keep the flow of water from interrupting its presence, and presented the homeowners with a 3D plan to transform the hilly, blank slate into an oasis. “He came back with a computerized design, and it exactly matched our vision,” the homeowner says, of Ellis’s original design, which included the pool, waterfall, a cabana for relief from the sun, and ideal placement for future landscaping to complement the design. Now that it is complete, several features—some easily visible and others not—make the saltwater pool user friendly for both kids and adults. For example, a beach-or slopedentry allows the children to wade easily in and out of the water, while built-in benches along the pool’s perimeter offer a place for adults to relax in the sun. The pool also has pebble-finish flooring which coordinates with the stone used throughout the nature-inspired design, including the travertine that surrounds the pool. “Nick took me to several pools around town to have me stand on the surfaces, and July 2015 | athomearkansas.com 43

I loved the travertine because it doesn’t get as hot as the concrete you see around most pools,” the homeowner says. Additional features, including a mosquito misting system to keep bugs at bay, a built-in heater—which allows the family to enjoy the pool from April through October—and an in-floor, automatic cleaning system, add to the ease of use and maintenance. What’s more, the heater, cleaning, and built-in water features can all be operated remotely, through a smart phone or iPad system. Finally, the couple called on Hughey’s Nursery and Landscaping to add color and vitality through plantings, including bright pink Knock Out roses and textured grasses. “We have always seen how beautiful their work is around town, and they were able to keep in mind how all of the plants would mature and return year after year, which keeps us from having to make a continual investment in landscaping. It’s just been perfect. We are so used to it that we forget how amazing it really is sometimes. It surpassed our expectations,” the homeowner says of the end result.

Sitting high above Beaver Lake, the Mathews wanted the front of their home to be as beautiful as the back— which overlooks the water. Vickie Mathews searched Houzz.com for inspiration and found a Craftsmanstyle façade almost identical to this one to use as a starting point with the architect. Details, including solid wood garage doors and Arkansas-quarried stone give the home a naturally elegant look.

50 At Home in Arkansas | July 2015

ickie Mathews has a boatload of memories from Beaver Lake. “I grew up in Fayetteville, and the lake was just forming when I was young. I remember coming up here and going out on the boat with my family,” she says. Later, when she and her husband Bill began their own family in Northwest Arkansas, the nearby lake became a favorite getaway for them and their two children. “We just always had such good family time here,” she adds. It was this quality time and the memories made on the lake that prompted the couple to make it their home year-round. MAKING THE MOVE Once the couple’s children were grown, they knew the time had come to make the move. “We had built other homes in the past, but we knew this was going to be our forever home, so we spent a full year planning and then another year actually building the house,” Mathews says. During the planning phase, the couple turned to two experts in the field: interior designer Heather Herzik, of Antiquities—Interior Design, and kitchen and bath designer Andi Stephens, of Fayetteville’s Kitchen Distributors. Both designers had worked with the couple on previous homes, so they were familiar with their tastes and eager to help them create their dream home. July 2015 | athomearkansas.com 51

The dining room was designed specifically for the round table shown here, which Mathews fell in love with after learning it turns to reveal or conceal additional leaves. Herzik incorporated the millwork on the ceiling to echo the table’s shape, and selected a mix of chairs for a masculine-meets-feminine feel. Facing page: The home’s great room has multiple sitting areas to accommodate a crowd and provide space for quieter moments.

was cleared and the house was sited for optimized views of the lake and the countryside from the back of the home. This proved to be especially advantageous when it came to installing a pool. “We had seen a pool like this on a trip to St. Thomas. That one seemed to drop off into the ocean, and we thought, ‘Why not create one in our backyard that appears to drop off into the lake?’” The infinity-style pool, which also features a small, built-in hot tub area, is the centerpiece of the home’s backyard and a destination for family get-togethers.

OUTSIDE IN Starting with the home’s façade, Mathews searched the Houzz website for inspiration in narrowing down the choices. “I started boards on Houzz.com, and found the perfect design for the outside of the home. Bill wanted more of a Craftsman-style home, and we thought this one was beautiful,” Mathews notes. Kim Fugitt, AIA, used the inspiration images Mathews had found to recreate the look. “It turned out pretty much just as we envisioned and very similar to the home I found,” Mathews adds. From there, they consulted with Herzik to choose the perfect paint color for the newly built exterior. “We painted sample after sample. We must have gone through 40 or 50 colors, and in the end we went back to one of the three original colors I had selected,” laughs Herzik. To take full advantage of the location, some of the property 52 At Home in Arkansas | July 2015

INTERIOR PLAN When it came to the interior of the home, the Mathews, Herzik, and Stephens embraced a philosophy of balancing comfort and tradition. “My style is somewhat traditional, but I like everything to be comfortable,” Mathews notes. “Heather took me to market with her and I got to really see all the selections and sit on the furniture to test it out, so I feel like I got to pick out everything in this house, and I really like everything,” she says of the furnishings. Herzik agrees that this type of approach allows the client’s style to resonate throughout the home. “None of my designs represent me; they all represent my clients. It’s so important that their look comes across since it is their home,” she says. The Mathews were also able to incorporate meaningful pieces into the design, including a pair of tables that belonged to Bill’s grandmother. “She had a boarding house on Cape Cod, and these were used as dining tables there,” explains Mathews. She and Herzik found antique chairs in Dallas, and the pair are now used as game tables at the Mathews's home when Vickie hosts her bridge club.

Gothic mullions on the glassfront cabinets, a wood-stained island that’s reminiscent of a furniture piece, and old-worldinspired lanterns add character in the kitchen. An iron fireback was installed in the center of the antique brick backsplash behind the cooktop for a history-rich focal point.

KITCHEN OF COMFORTS Perhaps the blend of a traditional style and a comfortable feel comes across most in the kitchen. “I love to feed people and entertain, so I wanted the kitchen to be open to connect everyone together,” says Mathews, who turned to Stephens to bring this vision to life. The kitchen and bath designer added tons of details including glass-front cabinetry doors with Gothic-style mullions, furniture-style millwork (such as turned legs and feet for the island), and a two-color palette to break up the large expanses of cabinetry and give the space a livable feel that also has plenty of visual interest. Aside from the details that meet the eye, organizational features, including a pop-up shelf for a stand mixer as well as pan and lid dividers inside the cabinetry, are details equally important to the room’s function. MASTER MIX As with most master suites, this space is a retreat. Aiming for a spa-like feel in the master bath, crisp cabinetry, white flooring, and a clean aesthetic come together to create an escape that can be enjoyed every day. Due to the location, there's little need for privacy, so they opted for a freestanding tub placed near the window. The design allows them to enjoy a view of the water while soaking. In a similar fashion, the couple often sit to read or look out at the water and hillside from the comfort of two swivel chairs in the bedroom, making their goal of living on and enjoying the lake achievable from almost any room in the home. Stephens and Herzik employed a crisp, neutral color scheme to create a spa-like feel in the master bath. A freestanding tub, placed near the window, allows for a view of the lake from the comfort of a warm bath. Left: The master bedroom has an equally calming and restful color scheme.

heb and Danny Fisher love their cabin on the Little Red River. Located in Pangburn—less than an hour and a half away from their primary residence in Little Rock, it is a cherished getaway spot for the entire family, including their four adult children and the family dog, Ellie, a Cairn terrier. In the few years since they have owned the cabin, the couple have transformed the entire property, from the bedroom loft right down to the riverside dock. July 2015 | athomearkansas.com 59

— SHEB FISHER

Make it Bigger

“The cabin was tiny when we first bought it—perfect for two people, but there just wasn’t enough space for all of us,” Sheb Fisher says. To remedy this, they expanded the home’s living and sleeping quarters by 900 square feet. One half of an existing deck was enclosed, and the open-plan living area was extended toward the river, making space for a full-sized dining table. A stone fireplace formerly stood in the center of the living room. “It was pretty…and massive,” Fisher explains, “and I tried to plan the space around it, but it just wasn’t going to work.” After relocating the fireplace to a side wall, Fisher says she realized that it had stood in the way of the cabin’s best feature: “We have enjoyed the space so much more now that the fireplace isn’t blocking the river view.” The remaining half of the riverside deck was screened and now serves as a place for the family to eat, gather, and relax outdoors. The expansion of the cabin’s primary living area created space for a full-sized dining table, a necessity for large family gatherings. The table itself was a Pottery Barn find, while the chairs are antiques—a prime example of Fisher’s new-meets-old design philosophy. The antler chandelier is original to the cabin, an eclectic remnant of the former lodge-like atmosphere. Somers Collins, Fisher’s sister, painted the large-scale, butterflythemed artwork that hangs on the wall.

Another top priority was to ensure that everyone would have a place to sleep when all four kids—with their own guests, spouses, and children— want to gather at the river house at the same time. “The main thing I told the architect was that I really needed four sleeping spaces, in addition to a master,” Fisher recalls. The house’s two original bedrooms were preserved, and a loft space was divided, creating one annexed bedroom and one open sleeping/sitting area. The cabin’s existing carport was enclosed and converted into a master bedroom, a spacious and peaceful retreat where Sheb and Danny feel right at home, as their visits to the cabin become longer and more frequent. “Especially when the house is full of guests,” Fisher says, “we sometimes need a place where we can be quiet and by ourselves.”

Make it Brighter

Before the renovation, the interior of the home was finished in deep wood tones, wall-to-wall, creating a lodge-like atmosphere. “Everything was pine—it was so dark,” Fisher remembers. “The cabin has lots of natural shade anyway, and the dark interior just made it even darker,” she says. Fisher’s solution? “I

decided to paint the whole thing white. I have to be surrounded by a light, airy feeling.” The pine plank walls of the cabin are now covered in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White. “I like to start with a neutral palette, preferably white,” Fisher says of her favored design approach, “and [then I] add color with art, furnishings, and accessories.” With the new white walls, a rustic, white oak flooring of varying plank sizes poses a slight contrast and supports the organic feeling of the space. “The texture of the floor shows all the knots— it’s so rustic and pretty. I love how it turned out,” Fisher says. The addition of a bank of windows to the loft space also helped open and brighten the cabin. “We were going to completely close off the loft area,” Fisher says, “but the windows brought in a lot more light, so we left that part open.” In fact, she is so pleased with the loft’s radiant renovation that she envisions making the space a mini art studio, where she can work on creative projects.

Make it Personal

In addition to creating more space and light in the cabin, Fisher brought together furnishings, both old and new, July 2015 | athomearkansas.com 63

Above: In the master bedroom, a bird motif alludes to the cabin’s forest setting. The two bird pastels that hang on the right are Fisher’s own work. The photographs on the left wall are images of Lake Michigan by Todd Reed. These images are special to Fisher, because it is a beloved place she visits every summer, and displaying them is a way of connecting two of her happiest places. A hide rug and mirror-front bedside tables with delicate gold latticework provide the room with a wide range of textures. Right: The bathroom vanity is a Pottery Barn piece that Fisher says she was attracted to, “because of the sophistication of the marble with the rustic wood and hardware. I thought it was a unique combination.”

The iron scrollwork bed in one of the guest bedrooms once belonged to Fisher’s great-grandmother. Along with the pine plank walls, now painted in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White, the vintage frame gives the room a farmhouse feel, while geometric and floral fabrics keep the mood lively and current.

the perfect space for it.” The painting that stands on the mantel above the fireplace—another that was made by her sister—is known among the family as “the red woman picture,” and Fisher notes, “Everybody in our family wants that picture. I love it, too!”

to infuse the retreat with her personal style. Confident and skilled in interior design, she attributes her know-how to a background in photography and her subsequent experience in photo styling. Plus, she adds, “I have always been interested in home décor. Even as a child, I loved to move furniture around and try it different ways.” The Fishers purchased the cabin partially furnished, and Sheb has incorporated a number of those remaining pieces in her design, including the deer-antler chandelier that hangs above the dining table and the curvaceous, hide-upholstered chairs that now stand in the home’s entry. Some of the other items were cast-offs

from the couple’s primary residence, while still others are family heirlooms that had not previously found a home. The iron bed in one of the guest rooms, for instance, belonged to Fisher’s greatgrandmother. Original artwork adds character, color, and movement to every space in the cabin, and most of the pieces were done either by Fisher herself or by her sister, Somers Collins. As she was pulling the rooms together, particular pieces her sister had made came to mind as perfect finishing touches. About the painting that hangs in the dining room, Fisher recalls, “I called [my sister] and asked to use the butterfly picture, because I knew I had

Make it Home

Each member of the Fisher family has a favorite river pastime and a unique way of enjoying the property. Sheb claims her favorite space is the screened porch, where she says she spends “most of [her] waking hours,” while she is at the river, and Danny and the kids enjoy fishing off the dock. As for Ellie—the dog—she loves kayaking and chasing geese. “Ellie is so happy at the cabin,” Fisher says, “she just claims the whole neighborhood as her own." The renovation of the getaway certainly achieved the Fishers’s ultimate goal: to create a place for family togetherness, enjoyment, and relaxation. “We love the river,” Fisher says, “It’s so quiet and peaceful there. It’s just really lovely.” July 2015 | athomearkansas.com 65

The new screened porch is Fisher’s declared favorite spot, where she loves to spend most of her cabin time. As the trees have filled-in and become more lush this summer, she says, it feels very much “like being inside a treehouse.” Separate sitting and dining areas on the porch allow for versatile use of the outdoor space.

”We love the RIVER. It's so QUIET AND PEACEFUL there. It's just really LOVELY.” — SHEB FISHER

Terry Farris, of Farris & Sons Construction in Searcy, transformed the property between the cabin and the water's edge. Where formerly there was a single, straight-shot stairway, there is now a compelling hardscape, built with all-Arkansas stones, that invites you to meander your way to the dock and enjoy the river. After seeing a few examples of his work, the Fishers gave Farris and his team free-rein, and the result allows them to use this portion of the exterior in ways that they never anticipated.

Old GLORY As Americans prepare to celebrate 239 years of freedom, there is perhaps no piece of history more symbolic or iconic than the American flag. With thirteen stripes— representing the thirteen original colonies—and 50 stars, one for each state, it’s a symbol of solidarity that connects every man, woman, and child lucky enough to call the United States home. We think it looks as beautiful as ever flying proudly over the Little Red River.
