HOW IT WORKS Each May, the NCAA hosts six regionals, which are spread around the country and provide for exciting golf from coast to coast. The six-regional format was started at the 2009 NCAA Championships and replaced the old three-regional system that began play in 1992 when the NCAA first instituted a regional format. Each of the six 2014 regional sites will qualify five teams for the NCAA Championship Finals, being held at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., on May 23-28, 2014. Those 30 teams will then play 54 holes of stroke play (May 23-25) and cut to the top-eight teams for match play. A fourth round of stroke play — top 40 individuals and ties — will crown an individual medalist on May 26. Match play is seeded according to stroke-play finish. The No. 1 team will face the No. 8 team, No. 2 will face No. 7, No. 3 vs. No. 6 and No. 4 vs. No. 5. Match play quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on May 27, followed by the finals on May 28. Teams are selected for regional competition based upon their overall tournament finishes and head-to-head finishes against other teams that are in their region. Selection is made by a regional committee compromised of head coaches. From 1989 through the 2008 NCAA Championships, the finals consisted of 72 holes of play with a cut after 54 holes to the top-15 teams.
