Arquitectonica’s MOUNT PARKER RESIDENCES nears completion

Benoy Masterplans DreamCenter Landmark in Shanghai

MOUNT PARKER RESIDENCES elegantly ascends from the slopes of Mount Parker, on the bustling side of Island East, Hong Kong, located at 1 Sai Wan Terrace. The building form is curved and soft contrasting with the right angled rigidity of its neighbourhood. The effect is immediate and compelling. The design solution emancipates the building from the constraints of its surroundings and introduces a new and unique personality to the architectural language of Hong Kong. The 24-storey tower is curvilinear in plan and in section and consists of 19 residential floors. The tower and its enclosing metal ribbon, floats above transparent ground floor lobbies. From the road below, the tower hovers effortlessly above the tree canopy. Two separate entry lobbies are enclosed in folding clear glass draperies. Softly illuminated at night, the lobbies enhance the sense of weightlessness to the whole edifice.

Benoy is proud to announce its appointment as the Masterplanner behind the recently unveiled DreamCenter in Shanghai. DreamCenter has been released as the leading element of the ‘West Bund Media Port’ project; one of the largest cultural investment projects currently undertaken in China. Located along the Huangpu River in Shanghai’s Xuhui District, the integrated development is the result of a dynamic collaboration between Lan Kwai Fong Group, DreamWorks Animation and CMC Capital Partners. With a land area of 152,300m2, the masterplan brings together 12 unique art, culture and entertainment venues to ignite inspiration as a cultural hub for the city. Key features include the ‘Dream Avenue’ Cultural Theatre District; Headquarters of Oriental DreamWorks which will become Asia’s top animation production base;Asia’s most iconic 500-seat IMAX Cineplex; and the exciting Lan Kwai Fong Entertainment and Lifestyle District. Eight themed outdoor plazas will work to interconnect these core hubs within the development.

The fluid form of the building bends to suit the site and the views towards the harbour. A metal ribbon encloses and frames the entire circumference of the building, holding the composition together and enhancing its strong profile. The organic language extends inwards to the balconies, bay windows and fenestration. The components weave in both directions as the plan bends around the site. Sunlight glints from the surfaces as the multiple components wend their way harmoniously around the facade.

Project Director, Brady Siu, said: “Benoy is extremely thrilled and proud to be involved with the DreamCenter masterplan that shares the vision of the West Bund Media Port. As designers we feel passionately about extending the creative realm and DreamCenter’s visionary ideal will have a tremendous impact on the cultural and creative landscape of Shanghai.”

Collection Pavilion opens at Shanghai Auto Museum The Collection Pavilion at Shanghai Auto Museum opened on 11 April. It is a permanent exhibition about the milestones in automobile development from 1900 to 1975. Atelier Brückner created a spacious room narrative representing an exclusive parking deck which displays 39 historical cars over 2300m2. The presentation is composed of six sections, aligning the cars in chronological order on white strips: from the 'Age of acceleration', where the beginnings of mobility are shown, to 'Golden luxury', 'On the road', 'The swinging sixties' and 'Charms of petites', followed by the 'Chinese mobility' area where the first Shanghai Sedan produced in China in the 1970s is on show. The Shanghai Auto Museum is China's first museum that is exclusively dedicated to the automobile and its historical development with a multi-brand approach. The Antique Car Pavilion is located on the museum`s first floor. It serves as a logical addition to the permanent exhibition on the ground floor of the museum, which was also designed by Atelier Brückner and has been open to visitors since 2006.

Century City Mall in Makati Officially Opened Award winning eco-architect Jason Pomeroy of Pomeroy Studio, was in Makati on 27 March to celebrate the launch of leading developer Century Properties’ flagship lifestyle and retail destination, Century City Mall. The Mall designed by Pomeroy, prior to establishing Pomeroy Studio, was the venue for a lavish gala celebration. The architecture seeks to challenge the ‘business as usual’ energy and water intensive mall typology by going back to basics. The 22,000m2 mall is characterised by its shell-like structure that seamlessly forms the wall and roof and protects the interior of the mall from the tropical rain and sun. The internal spatial organisation is structured along 19th century arcade principles, whereby a public thoroughfare provides a passage through Century City. It further seeks to optimize the penetration of natural light and ventilation through a series of skylights and air wells. The environmental and social responsiveness is also enhanced by a series of stepped sky courts that form external terraces to provide destination food and beverage areas. Pomeroy stated: “I’m delighted to have been invited to this special event and to see Century City Mall materialise from concept sketch to reality. I am hugely grateful to Marco Antonio and Century Properties for both their faith and commitment to progressive and sustainable architecture.” Marco Antonio, acting Chief Operating Officer of Century Properties tweeted: “Wanted to give a special thank you to the country’s #1 event director, Robby Carmona, for last night’s flawless festivities and architect Jason Pomeroy who we collaborated closely with to bring the vision of Century City Mall into reality.”

10 Design’s Vertical Farm Centre exhibited at Biennale

JLL launch Urban Farm atop Bank of America Tower

The Shenzhen Hong Kong Biennale is the first to focus on urbanism as a theme to explore issues of the city as an active agent in contemporary culture. 10 DESIGN’s submission, “RECLAMATION” together with other immensely creative works from around the world has been expansively exhibited. The Vertical Farm Centre provides a vision for Victoria Harbour in Central. The proposal centres on a 420m vertical farm that provides agricultural services and an interactive museum at its base, commercial space enclosed by a hydroponic greenhouse and a luxury hotel with ‘aeroponic’ atrium and observation deck. Beyond the building, the surrounding wetland park reclaims waste water, community gardens allow families to grow their own food, and a farmers market caters to the public. All waste is upcycled, as food waste provides fertilizer or methane for power. In total, the building could generate annually more than 2 billion HKD through agriculture, purify 40 million gallons of water naturally, and cleanse the surrounding air. More information at: www.10design.co.

JLL and owners of the Bank of America Tower recently celebrated the launch of JLL’s first urban farm in the heart of Central. JLL teamed up with local social enterprise, Time to Grow and Sowers Exchange to cultivate the urban farm, which is situated on the roof of the Bank of America Tower. At over 300m2, the roof-top farm is one of the largest in Hong Kong and is unique for the city given its location within the central business district. The aim of the farm, which will grow a variety of vegetables, is to raise awareness about the potential to make Hong Kong a more liveable, healthy and sustainable city. William Lai, Head of Property Management at JLL, Hong Kong, said: “The urban farm will send a very important message to the community in Hong Kong, particularly those working or living in urban areas such as Central. It is always possible to improve how sustainable our food system is. It was a pleasure to see the hard work of the volunteers under the expert supervision of Time to Grow, in support of a greener Hong Kong.”

Construction begins on Jerde-designed Shinsegae mixed-use retail transit hub Known as one of the premier world-class brands in South Korea, Shinsegae has begun construction on the nearly 145,000m2 Kimhae Center located in South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. Designed by The Jerde Partnership, the new centre integrates outdoor culture and community spaces with five levels of retail and entertainment, along with major transportation facilities. As one of the largest multi-use retail centres in the province, Kimhae Center combines three major project components: an on-site bus terminal, which is directly connected to a Shinsegae shopping centre that includes newto-market tenants and intimate seven-screen cinema; and an adjacent E-Mart discount anchor. The bus terminal has completed construction, and pilings for the commercial centre recently started. The centre’s signature community spaces incorporate a large outdoor public park and entry plaza at street level, terracing café decks along the upper levels, and a rooftop Sky Park garden. Reflecting the elite brand of Shinsegae, Jerde created a modern design that blends with multiple open spaces to enhance connections to the local Kimhae landscape and culture. The multi-level retail centre’s clean, contemporary architecture is sculpted to provide distinct visibility along the main Kimhae-daero highway and parallel metro line. On the opposite side along JEONHA-ro, the project’s main entry is highlighted by a new community park designed with a minimalist aesthetic, including horizontal banding and patterned concrete, floating elements with warm lighting, outdoor seating, and geometric landscape. The park also has a sunken cultural event space composed of a public amphitheatre, performance area and serene water features.

AECOM celebrates opening of the longest bridge in Southeast Asia AECOM Technology Corporation recently celebrated the official opening of Second Penang Bridge in Malaysia – the longest bridge in Southeast Asia. AECOM has played a key role in partnering with the contractor to deliver an innovative structure designed to withstand the severe seismic stress of a once-every-2,500-year earthquake. Second Penang Bridge is a 24km bridge linking the Penang Island and the Malaysia Peninsula and is the largest civil engineering project in the past 20 years in the region. It consists of precast segmental concrete marine viaducts in 55m span modules and a cast in-situ concrete cable-stayed bridge measuring 475m. A special aspect of the project involved applying intelligent construction engineering techniques to enable successful erection of the 240m main span cable-stayed bridge over the main navigation channel. In addition to its large size, this RM4.5-billion project pioneered new construction methods to minimize the risk caused by seismic activity near the Sunda tectonic plate, including the use of 2-meter-diameter bored piles founded to a depth in excess of more than 120m for the cable-stayed bridge, and the use of high-damping rubber bearings for seismic isolation of the marine viaducts. Hong Kong Green Building Council launches Green Shop Guide Municipal solid waste management is one of the latest environmental issues to hit the headlines. Some shopping malls and shops have accelerated efforts to reduce waste, while implementing energy and environmental improvement measures such as recycling and reuse as well as introducing green technology to treat waste, including food waste. Shopping is an integral part of Hong Kong life. If the retail industry demonstrates its commitment to waste reduction and saving energy, it will significantly ease the burden on landfills and result in a considerable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. In view of this, the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) has announced the launch of the Hong Kong Green Shop Guide (the Guide), a new set of guidelines to inform retail stakeholders, including developers, facility managers, mall and shop owners and tenants, as well as consumers, of industry standards on sustainable planning and building. The Guide aims at encouraging the sector to pursue green building measures and eco-friendly purchasing habits among the general public. Singapore’s Prime Minister opens Lucasfilms’ regional HQ Sandcrawler, the new regional headquarters for Lucasfilm Singapore, owned by Lucas Real Estate Singapore and designed by Andrew Bromberg of Aedas, was officially opened earlier this year by legendary director of Star Wars and founder of Lucasfilm George Lucas, President of Lucasfilm Katherine Kennedy and Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong. The innovative horseshoe form reminds people of the Star Wars films and later inspired the naming of the building, rooting it in the success of the renowned animation company. The building also serves as the headquarters of The Walt Disney Company (Southeast Asia) and ESPN Asia Pacific. The elevated building is impressively streamlined. Its form arose as a logical outcome of the zoning restrictions which dictated the roof height and slop as well as the amount of required elevation on each face. These requirements were then overlayed with the client’s needs, including large floorplates to support the large animation teams and lifting the building off the ground to afford some privacy and security to the sensitive work being performed inside. The maximum depths of office space to natural light shaped the floors into a ‘V’ plan overlooking the lush courtyard enclosed below.

The winners of each category are put forward to compete for the coveted World Building of the Year award, presided over by the festival’s ‘super-jury’, with the presentation of the award being the culmination of WAF 2014. The Kempinski Residence, comprising three residential towers within a landscaped park, will set new standards for high-end living within Yinchuan, the capital city of Ningxia Province, when fully operational at the end of 2014. Hong Kong based architects Urbanprojects, the authors of the design, have worked closely with owner and developer Master Land and operator Kempinski Hotels & Resorts to realize this vision which is the second phase of a larger master plan by Urbanprojects, originating in 2006. The Kempinski Residence will offer 168 simplex and duplex apartments from 250 - 420m2 and three larger ‘trophy’ penthouse units configured around private rooftop courtyard gardens. The three towers step down from 27 to 19 levels in a gentle crescent bordering a new central park.To the south, the façades are articulated in an organic collage of terracotta and glass panels. By contrast, the north aspect expresses a more rational grid of stone infused with decorative geometric terracotta screens recalling the deeply rooted Islamic culture prevalent throughout Ningxia Province. The new ‘central park’ at the heart of the master plan undulates in contoured landforms over a three level subterranean central clubhouse. The club is illuminated through two glazed elliptical vaulted steel shell structures which hover over the atria below.

National Heart Centre completes in Singapore Designed by Broadway Malyan, the landmark National Heart Centre in the centre of Singapore has been completed and is now set to provide a new centre of excellence for patients. Broadway Malyan acted as lead design consultant on the 12-storey, 48,000 m2, building, with support from local consultancy Ong & Ong, with the project’s design philosophy based on the principle of putting patients, staff and visitors first. The patientfocused environment builds on traditional hospital design, emphasises light and features open spaces with a mixture of green courtyards, sky-gardens and landscape views to create a welcoming and calming environment conducive to patient wellbeing and the healing process. This sense of openness carries through to the external finish, with the façade appearing to be stripped back to reveal the gardens and courtyards and better connect people to the wider environment. To improve the patient experience, the design team organised the complex and diverse range of clinical functions in a way that satisfies vital clinical needs, while minimising travel distances and creating efficient circulation around the building.
