FROM THE OWNERS:

LIVING AT THE DRAWING BOARD – DESIGNING THE BEST GEAR FOR THE SERIOUS OUTDOORSMAN Last year our message was focused on the fact that Merino wool is the best technical fabric. It keeps you warm when it’s cold, wicks moisture away from your skin, controls odor, doesn’t reflect light, is whisper quiet and most of all, its damned comfortable. Merino wool simply works. Judging by the number of other brands that are now using Merino as part of their products, we’d say that the industry has taken notice. And judging by our own growth and the overwhelming support we have received from all of you, we can say that the avid outdoorsmen and women are getting it, too. So for this year, we set out to make it even better--updating, tweaking, improving--and in some cases subtracting— ultimately going to the drawing board to come up with all new versions of our best styles and adding a few new ones that will complement your existing First Lite collection. The focus of our product update effort was to create a highly functional, technical product with a great look and style. With the help of an industry leading design team, we developed the Shooters Cut articulated fit that addresses dexterity within the shoulder seams and arm—critical range of movement in the field. Actively listening to your feedback, our design team came back with changes to the placement of our seams for improved comfort and fit; reverse zippers, strategically placed pockets and the addition of thumb loops. We have also included new logos and First Lite work marks to identify your product as the best in the industry. For our new products, we have taken all of this feedback and created four new tops and two new accessories that complement the existing product line, yet still manage to give you options for layering that were previously unavailable. So sit down and flip thru the pages to see all that First Lite is bringing to the table for 2012. As always, keep in touch with us on the web at www.firstlite.com and on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. 2012 FIRST LITE www.firstlite.com .com

Good luck and happy hunting.

WHY WOOL: Most of us who are old enough to have spent years in the outdoors before the advent of Merino wool underlayers associate ‘wool’ with that stinky, itchy, hand-knit sweater that weighed 20 lbs when wet and smelled like your 10 year old Golden Retriever. With the advent of Merino wool garments all of that has changed. Merino wool fibers are some of the finest found in nature and produce material so soft, durable and naturally odor resistant, they surpass synthetics in every way. Despite the advances of science and the creation of soft fleece and plush cynchilla, nothing beats the feel of Merino wool and unlike synthetics which stink when they’re dirty with sweat, wool doesn’t stink even after you’ve sweated in it for days. Not only does this mean it needs to be washed far less than your other garments, but it means not getting as easily “winded” by game when it matters most. You’ll be happy to know washing your wool is easy (when it needs it) and it can be dried in the dryer as well. Wearing our Merino wool underlayers will feel like you’re wearing your favorite cotton T-shirt.

MERINO WOOL

SYNTHETIC FIBER

NO SHINE: Wool absorbs light while synthetics reflect it and create a UV shine. Even wool blends with as little as 10% nylon or other synthetic material such as silver reflect light making you more visible to your prey. 100% wool has no reflection. NO SOUND: Wool doesn’t flap in the wind, doesn’t shear when you walk or crackle when it’s cold. Wool in motion creates no sound.

www.firstlite.com .com

TRADITIONAL WOOL

NO SMELL: “They can hear you twice, see you once, but if they smell you they’re gone.” Every hunter knows the importance of minimizing human odor and there’s no fabric better at keeping B.O. to a minimum than wool. Wool absorbs 30% of its weight in moisture which then passes through the material and is released into the air instead of remaining on the skin. Transporting the moisture away from the skin and completely through the fabric is the main reason wool is so successful at controlling odor. Nylon absorbs only 4.5% and polyester .4%. With these synthetic fabrics moisture remains on the skin and the fabric leaving a feast for odor creating bacteria on the skins surface.

2012 FIRST LITE

HOW DOES IT KNOW? Sheep have evolved over hundreds of thousands of years and are able to live in the freezing high alpine slopes of Siberia as well as the blistering heat of the Australian outback, their wool coats both shelter them from the cold and protect them from the heat. Merino wool underlayers do the same against our skin. They regulate body heat much better than any synthetic fabric can and will keep you comfortable in a wider range of temperatures. When it is warm the wool transports moisture and warm air away from the skin and disperses it into the air, when it is cold the wool traps the warm air and keeps it close to the skin.

05

MERINO WOOL TECHNOLOGY COMFORT

Merino wool fibers are some of the finest found in nature. It is the tiny diameter of the fibers that allows it to be worn directly next to your skin without any irritation or itch. Merino wool comes from the Merino sheep breed which is only found in specific natural environments. The wool growers in New Zealand and Australia have refined the wool sorting process to produce soft, durable wool for next to skin applications. The composition of wool makes it warm, water-repellent, odor-resistant, flame-retardant, durable, anti-static, and a UV protector. Wool is 90% keratin - a tough, insoluble, fibrous protein also found in hair, finger nails, horns, hooves and the outer layer of skin. A wool fiber can be bent and twisted more than 20,000 times before it will break. This elasticity as well as the microscopic diameter of each strand of wool creates a soft, comfortable, fabric that is perfect for hunters in all types of conditions.

ODOR CONTROL

There are a number of aspects of the physical and chemical structure of Australian Merino that make it naturally more resistant to odors than other textiles, especially synthetics.

2012 FIRST LITE www.firstlite.com .com

06

Moisture Transport - While sweat itself has no odor, if it remains on the skin in time bacteria develop and create unpleasant body odors. Merino reduces the opportunity for odors to generate because it is more efficient than other textiles at absorbing sweat and evaporating it into the air. No Microbial attraction - Studies have shown that bacteria are more attracted to the smooth, positively charged surface of a synthetic fiber than the scaly surface of a Merino fiber which carries no charge. Moisture Absorption - The Merino has a much greater capacity than other fibers to absorb moisture. In fact, it can absorb 35% of its own weight in liquid. The moisture is bound within the structure, and so is not available to microbes, which are unable to penetrate the scaly surface of the fiber. Glass Transition - In water and conditions of high humidity, Merino passes through what is termed a glass transition at which point it dramatically increases its rate of absorption and dispersion. Trapping Odors - The rate of diffusion of small and large molecules into the fiber increases and it is able to absorb odors faster. When the temperature drops, and the fiber once again falls below the glass transition, the odors are trapped within the structure even if the moisture evaporates. Later, during laundering, the garment again passes through the glass transition point and the odors are carried out of the structure by the water. Synthetics are not able to benefit from this same effect because they do not pass through glass transition during normal wear.

THERMAL REGULATION

Each wool fiber is covered with tiny scales like tiles or shingles on a roof that help shed water, rain or spills. But wool is full of contrasts and paradoxes that give it outstanding high performance for cold weather activities. The interior (called the cortex) of wool fiber can hold up to 30% of its weight in moisture without the wool fabric feeling damp or clammy, while the exterior (called the cuticle) is water repelling. Also, when moisture enters the wool fiber, energy is released in the form of heat which helps keep the outdoor enthusiast warm. The high performance characteristics of wool help keep the wearer warm in the winter and cool in the summer by naturally maintaining a comfortable balance in the wearer’s personal micro climate - that is the air between the skin and the layers of clothing. This means that in warm weather fine wool helps keep the wearer cool by transferring heat and body moisture away from the body for a naturally cooling effect.

SHOOTER’S CUT

2012 FIRST LITE

SIZE CHART

www.firstlite.com .com

Freedom of movement and total confidence in your gear means that when that shot-of-a-lifetime finally presents itself, you will succeed. That was the inspiration behind the new Shooters Cut fit design and construction. Shoulders and arms are sewn in a way that allows for maximum articulation without any binding to ensure that when drawing your bow, looking thru your scope or down the barrel of your shotgun it is a smooth and uninhibited motion. Look for base and mid layers with the Shooters Cut icon and know that these products are designed for the maximum freedom of movement while still maintaining that performance and comfort you’ve grown to love.

07

FIRST LITE WEIGHTS Our lightweight products are made from 100% ultrafine Merino wool. This is the finest, softest category of Merino wool that can be used for production. These products are designed to go next to your skin and be the ultimate in comfort and odor control. In our tops, this fabric would be equivalent the weight of a cotton Tshirt. But unlike cotton, our wool will wick moisture away from the skin and keep you comfortable even when wet. Next to skin comfort, extra warmth and odor control make our midweight fabrics extremely versatile. Our midweight fabrics are 100% superfine Merino wool constructed in a weight that is perfect for a first layer in moderate conditions or as a second layer for colder situations.

At over twice the weight of our lightweight fabric, the First Lite heavyweight Merino wool will keep you warm when the temps are low. Wool’s unique warmth to weight ratio means that styles made with this fabric will insulate and ensure comfort at a wide range of cooler temperatures without being bulky, noisy or cumbersome. 2012 FIRST LITE www.firstlite.com .com

CAMO PATTERNS ASAT

Breaks up the hunter’s outline even at close range. This camouflage becomes even more effective with distance and can make the hunter totally disappear into his natural surroundings. Rather than a particular pattern of leaves, sticks or bark, ASAT uses large irregular curved shapes of overlapping colors which create voids and shadows that effectively make it appear as though nothing is there. ASAT is made up of shades of brown, tan and black. The brown and black colors represent the background and shadows found in all terrains and in all seasons. The tan color reflects the surrounding colors into which it is placed. This allows the hunter to ‘blend’ into his surroundings instead of sticking out from them.

MOSSY OAK®

Open Terrain was created to meet the increasing demand for a highly-effective pattern with the versatility to perform in a variety of open settings across the country. From mule deer, whitetail and pronghorn to elk, bighorn, varmints and turkey. Though this pattern has a decidedly Western flair it is versatile enough to perform in any open setting: Sage-covered hillsides. Mesquite flats. Wide open prairies. Deserts. Rocky terrain. Croplands. REALTREE MAX-1® is truly the perfect addition to the highly successful REALTREE ® brand.

LOST CAMO®

Was developed by Mathews® founder, Matt McPherson and team. It has a distinctive horizontal look that is designed to get lost in the trees above. Lost Camo® is equally effective in all kinds of terrain, western draws, fence lines, rocky hillsides, or the Texas brush. The colors in Lost Camo® are found everywhere in the country, 12 months of the year. The Lost Camo® pattern is larger than most patterns on the market, which means it will stay effective even at long distances. Designed by a bowhunter, for bowhunters, Lost® is the perfect addition to any bowhunters gear bag. Lost Camo® is one of the largest camo patterns on the market designed specifically for bowhunters. The average camo pattern is composed of 25” x 25” frames, whereas Lost Camo® frames are 60” x 40”. This ensures that the garments are never perceived as a solid color, even at 1000 yards. The unique pattern has shelf appeal and optimal functionality for bowhunters.

REAL TREE MAX-1®

2012 FIRST LITE

The industry leader in camouflage design, is proud to introduce its newest pattern, Break-Up Infinity. Featuring unprecedented depth, unequalled detail and elements with remarkable contrast, Break-Up Infinity truly offers hunters another dimension in camo. Each element in Break-Up Infinity – leaves, limbs, acorns and branches – was selected to create unprecedented realism and contrast to break up a hunter’s silhouette. Then they were placed over multiple layers of actual images from the woods to create a multi-dimensional depth of field unlike any camouflage ever created.
