Rockhurst High School All Sports Program

Welcome from the President Dear Rockhurst Community and our guests,

Mission Statement Rockhurst High School serves the greater Kansas City area by educating Ignatian leaders, “men for others”, in the Roman Catholic, Jesuit college preparatory tradition. In the spirit of Saint Ignatius Loyola, its goal is the formation of the whole person within a diverse and desciplined environment, as one who is open to growth, strives for academic excellence, is religious, loving and committed to justice through service.

A.M.D.G.

Welcome to today’s athletic contest! We are so grateful to come together in the spirit of competition that serves the development of the young people we serve today. Of course, there is so much more than competition that takes place in the educational purposes of athletics. Students learn teamwork, self-sacrifice, perseverance and dedication. They learn how to accept feedback and guidance. They learn how to handle themselves when things go well and when things do not. Whether winning or losing, they learn how to be reflective in what went well and what did not in order to grow in continuous improvement. The lessons are many and they transfer to greater lessons in life, but the purpose of today’s activities are rooted in the education and formation we are called to provide young people. We wish for all those participating to grow in what it means to practice sportsmanship. It is for these deeper life lessons to be gained through athletic competition, that we salute the dedication of our coaching staff. Our coaches spend countless hours planning practices, strategies, scouting and directing in order for our student-athletes to be in the best position for competition. But, beyond the coaching, they are working with young men to help them see themselves in relationship to their teammates, their opponents, the officials and the results that come with competition. It is in the modeling and formation coaches provide ‘beyond the game’ that help young people move from something immediate, to something that can be life-long in its impact. Thanks to our coaches for their dedication to our student-athletes and managers. And this is the appropriate context for those who cheer them on in competition. Whether we are classmates or teachers, siblings or parents, friends or alumni, we are here in support of the young men who play. May our support be reflective of the highest callings that ground the purpose that answer the question ‘why’ we are here. Thank you to our parents, friends and benefactors who support the mission of Rockhurst and insure our very ability to live out this aspect of our mission. And finally, as a Jesuit Catholic school, we thank God – for the many gifts and talents of the student-athletes who share in competition today. We ask that God keep all young athletes competing safe from harm and call forth in all present today, our best selves for the greater honor and glory of God. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam. We are so glad to be with you today! Enjoy the game. Go Hawklets! Rock State! God bless,

President

The All Sports Program is put together in order to promote the 11 athletic programs under the Athletic Department. The revenue helps underwrite the costs of these programs. Special thanks to our advertisers for supporting The ROCK. Also, thanks to the coaching staffs for providing much of the information. Special thanks to the incoming freshmen and families for their help in selling ads. Thanks also to designer Curran Steck ‘13 and Raven Printing for their help in producing this year’s program.

A little bit about this year’s Program... The men and women behind the scenes: coaches. Here at Rockhurst, we are constantly impressed by our student-athletes, who dedicate themselves year-round to excellence in the classroom and on the field, course, pool, court, mat and track. They win District, Sectional and State Championships, earn individual recognition and honorably represent the school in wins and losses. Often times, their mentors and leaders go unheralded. But as most coaches will say, that is how they want it. Players should be an embodiment of their coaches, and we are proud of the young men who wear our name on their chests. That is a testament to the coaches who help mold them every day. We are so appreciative of the time Rockhurst coaches sacrifice away from their families in order to keep our programs among the best in the city, state and country. Despite the consistent success among all 11 varsity sports, our Hawklet coaches are most concerned with their student-athletes’ development as teammates, sons, brothers, friends and followers of Christ. In this year’s program, each sport’s introductory photo focuses on the head coach, who is rarely the focus during the season. We also included a “Coaching Philosophy” for each that epitomizes the leaders in charge of our young men. We are very proud to have them as Hawklets. Rock State!

Welcome from the Principal Welcome to Rockhurst! As one among 85 schools in the Jesuit Schools Network in the USA & Canada, Rockhurst believes that “a Jesuit school provides programs and services aligned with the mission to enhance the educational program and exercise care for each individual (cura personalis) as a whole person (body, soul, and mind).” Further, we believe that “a wide range of extracurricular, co-curricular, athletic and other mission supportive activities afford students the opportunity to develop their full potential to become enriched and well-rounded individuals.” With the leadership of our Athletic Director, Mr. Michael Dierks ‘91, and of his Assistant Athletic Directors, Mr. Gregory Buckman and Mr. Kevin McGill, our seasoned coaches, over 70% of whom are members of our full-time faculty and staff, help our studentathletes strive toward excellence in developing their whole selves: body, soul, and mind. I am grateful for all of our coaches, athletic trainers and team physicians, parent volunteers, managers, and statisticians who inspire the student-athletes to channel their energies toward healthy development and competition, who pray with them in chapel and on the field, and who direct them toward doing their best in their coursework. I also appreciate Mr. Mike Dierks ‘91, Athletic Director, Mr. Robbie Haden ‘09, Director of Communications, and Mr. Curran Steck ‘13, for their tremendous effort in publishing this year’s edition of the All Sports Program. On behalf of the faculty of Rockhurst, I offer prayers for faithdriven, healthy, positive, and safe competition for student-athletes and all others associated with our athletic programming. May they compete well, finish the race, and keep the faith (cf. 2 Timothy 4:7)! Our Lady, Queen of Victories: Pray for us.

Rev. Vincent Giacabazi, S.J. Principal

Vision Statement Rockhurst High School will be sought out and recognized for its ability to educate “men for others”. Rockhurst High School will, in the Jesuit tradition, foster lifelong friendships based on enduring principles and Ignatian values. It will be nationally and locally recognized as the best value-added education because of its success in developing community leaders for an increasingly diverse world.

Admission Information

To apply for admission to Rockhurst High School, contact the Admissions Office to obtain an application packet. This includes all the forms necessary for applying to Rockhurst. Once all materials are turned in, the admissions committee reviews each application to determine how Rockhurst can best serve the applicant and his family.

Open House

Rockhurst hosts an Open House each year to give young men in grades six through eight and their families a chance to tour the school. The Open House allows the families to see the school’s facilities and meet with current faculty and students. This year's Open House will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, October 27, 2019.

Visit Program

The Visit Program is another great way for prospective eighth graders to get a sense of a typical day at Rockhurst. Each participant spends a day “shadowing” one of our freshman through his daily class schedule. Visitors report to the Admissions Office at 7:50 a.m. and stay until the end of the regular school day. As an added bonus, lunch is on us! Visit the admission section on our website to schedule a shadow day.

Placement Test

Every student who plans to enroll in any Catholic high school in either Kansas or Missouri must take a standardized placement test. The test will be administered at Rockhurst High School at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2019 and Saturday, January 11, 2020. Results of the test will be used to identify potential candidates for honors classes and also help the admission committee determine summer school attendance.

Financial Aid

Rockhurst annually awards $2.7 million in financial assistance to its students. The financial aid awarded to students varies according to individual merit and financial circumstances. Aid awards are determined after taking into account an analysis by an independent agency of the family’s need, the applicant’s academic performance and his enthusiasm for a Rockhurst education. Thanks to the generosity of alumni and other donors, Rockhurst awards scholarships to many of our incoming and returning students. With few exceptions, scholarship awards are based strictly upon merit and financial need. Aid eligibility requires that a family file a financial aid statement with the Director of Financial Aid, but no separate application is necessary to receive scholarships. In addition to need-based scholarships, an incoming freshman may qualify for one of four different academic scholarships based on his composite score on the high school placement test. To be eligible for either scholarship, an eight grader must have: - B+ average in his seventh and eighth grade years - Received a positive teacher’s recommendation - Taken the placement test at Rockhurst High School Academic scholarships ranging from $500-$2,000 are awarded to incoming freshmen who achieve a composite score between the 96th and 99th percentile on the High School Placement Exam.

Rockhurst High School All Sports Program

Welcome from the

Athletic Director

One of the missions of co-curricular school activities is to serve as an extension of the classroom. There are strong lessons to be learned in athletics. Lessons include setting and maintaining high standards of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in our schools and our society. It is up to us to provide the direction and constant vigilance under which good sportsmanship can prosper and have a positive impact on our children, the leaders of tomorrow. We feel the need to stress the type of exemplary behavior that should be exhibited by all coaches, players and spectators at our events. The value of the lessons learned by exhibiting good sportsmanship will last a lifetime. If we ever lose sight of that, then athletics is not worth sponsoring. The positive actions of a coach, athlete or spectator at an event can influence how our school is perceived in our own community and the communities of those schools we meet on the field of play. Sportsmanship, quite simply, translates to citizenship for our young men and women and all those involved with the interscholastic program. Through our programs young people learn and practice RESPECT ‌ respect for self and respect for others. We are asking for your support in this effort by emphasizing to your son what is expected of them at an athletic event as a competitor or spectator. After all, such events are an extension of the school day, and we should expect the same type of respectful behavior exhibited in the athletic arena as we do in the classroom. We urge you to ask your children to demonstrate self-control and self-discipline and at the same time, enjoy the games. Finally, we ask you to set a good example when in the stands at an event. It is only through these efforts that we can clearly communicate what is acceptable behavior. We hope that your positive example will help set the tone for those around you so we may all enjoy the games our athletic teams are involved in. Sportsmanship starts with you! When you purchase a ticket to an athletic event, you are given the privilege to view the action and to voice your support of our teams. We want that support to be in a positive tone. Simply put; let the coaches coach, the players play and the officials officiate. While in the stands tonight, cheer for the Hawklets and make us proud! We look forward to serving you this year and appreciate your continued support of Rockhurst athletics.

Thanks!

Michael Dierks Athletic Director Class of 1991

Sportsmanship It is the desire of Rockhurst High School that good sportsmanship be practiced by students, players, coaches and fans. Acts such as throwing items on the playing surface, participation in vulgar cheers, participation in cheers against referees, etc., will be considered offensive to RHS as they don’t teach good sportsmanship. Violators will be escorted from the game and could be banned from attending future Rockhurst activities. Please support your school in a manner that will reflect positively on both you and your school.

Hall of Fame The Rockhurst High School “Sports Hall of Fame” honors alumni, coaches and friends who have had a major impact of the school’s athletic tradition. Given The Rock’s storied heritage of sporting excellence in the Midwest, selection to the Sports Hall means recognition among the “best of the best” in Midwestern athletic history. The Sports Hall was established in 1991 by legendary coach and athletic director, Al Davis, Jr., along with his devoted student and friend, Mike Lillis ’56. Since the Charter Class of five men was inducted, the Sports Hall has grown to 118 members, including one of the largest classes (seven) to ever be inducted this year. Honorees were determined by a Selection Committee that carefully reviews nominations by Alumni Class Captains, as well as recommendations from the public at large, before submitting a slate to David Laughlin, president of Rockhurst High School, for his blessing. Formal induction ceremonies occur each year during the Alumni Reunion Weekend. Members of the Sports Hall have distinguished themselves in many ways and were considered for a variety of reasons to be honored. A breakdown of some of the categorical members is listed above.

John Kafka

www.GoHawklets.com @GoHawklets

15

2019 Hall of Fame inductees

John Kafka of the great Class of 1968 was a pure scorer on the basketball court. As a senior, John earned himself the reputation as a top player in the city and state. He averaged more than 21 points per game while leading the Hawklets to a 20-5 record in the 1967-68 season. He shot 54% from the field and 78% from the free throw line. John dropped 42 points in one game - and this was prior to the three-point line! During that senior campaign, John led the Hawklets on a 19-game win streak and was eventually named 1st Team All-State for his efforts. John would go on to play basketball at Regis College (now University).

Carl Tutorino

‘74

Carl Tutorino of the great Class of 1974 was an interior force on both sides of the football for the Hawklets in the early-70s. He is most known for his role on the 1973 team that finished as the State Runner-Up with a 10-2 record. Rockhurst frustrated opponents with a punishing defense that allowed just 8.4 points per game, and paired it with a run-heavy offense that controlled the game. Carl, from his tackle position, fostered the team’s success. He was named to the All-Metro, District and State Teams, named a Prep All-American and was selected as the winner of the Dr. D.M. Nigro Award (now called the Simone Award), given to the most outstanding player in the Greater KC Metro area. Carl went on to play football and baseball at Northwest Missouri State.

Merle Gardner

‘87

Merle Gardner of the great Class of 1987 is still revered as one of the best all-around athletes in Rockhurst history. Whether it was on the football field or around the track, Merle was going to outrun you. Merle was a three-year starter out of the backfield who led Rockhurst in scoring as a sophomore and junior. And the tandem he formed with Kenyon Rasheed in 1985 and 1986 was one of the most lethal backfields the state has ever seen. The duo led Rockhurst to the 1986 State Championship. Merle was just as impressive on the track. He was a rare four-year letterman and a three-time State qualifier as a sprinter. And Merle could not even play perhaps his best sport for the Hawklets: baseball. Rockhurst did not have a baseball program at the time, but he was drafted by the Royals in 1987.

Chris Holmes

‘89 ‘91

Chris Holmes of the great Class of 1989 was a do-it-all athlete at The Rock. In the fall, Chris stood out on the gridiron as a special teams player before taking over as the Hawklets’ leading receiver as a senior. Chris was part of the 1987 State Championship team and then in 1988 earned himself All-Metro and 2nd Team All-State honors from his wideout position. In his two seasons as a starter, Rockhurst went 22-2-1. Chris lettered in basketball as a junior before narrowing his focus to football and track. You can still find Chris’ name on the track record board today as a member of the 1988 State Champion 4x400 relay team, which ran a blazing time of 3:16. Between his junior and senior track seasons, Chris qualified for State in seven events. He would go on to play football at Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Bert Roney Bert Roney of the great Class of 1991 is the only golfer in school history to earn All-State honors each of his four years on the golf team. Bert made his presence felt on the local and state circuit beginning his freshman year when he was the District Champion and the only Hawklet to medal at State, placing 12th individually. Sophomore season was Bert’s first of three top-10 finishes at State. As a junior, Bert averaged a team-best 36 shots per nine holes and tied for 8th at the State tournament. Then, as the senior captain, Bert led the Hawklets to a Team State Championship in 1991, the fourth in program history. His Rockhurst career culminated in a 5th place individual finish. Bert went on to golf at Northwestern University.

Thomas “Tay” Officer of the great Class of 1994 was a two-sport superstar at The Rock. As just a sophomore, Tay was significantly contributing to both the varsity football and basketball teams. As a junior, Tay was a two-way starter for Coach Severino’s Hawklets while leading the team in receiving. He earned All-District and All-Metro Honors. Tay took it to another level on the hardwood. As a junior, Tay was an All-District and All-Metro selection. From the point guard position, Tay then averaged 17 points and 6 assists per game his senior season, including a schoolrecord 46 point performance against Creighton Prep. Helping lead one of the most prolific offenses in school history, Rockhurst regularly scored in the 80s, 90s and 100s. Tay earned All-State status and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee. He would go on to play basketball at the University of North Texas.

Jason Cole

‘99

Jason Cole of the great Class of 1999 was instrumental in Rockhurst Soccer winning its first State Title in 1998 and helping build the program into the powerhouse it is today. Jason played his way onto the varsity squad as a freshman and began his consistent goal scoring over his four seasons. Following three successful underclassman seasons, Jason was named co-captain his senior year. Leading the team in scoring with 30 goals, Jason guided the Soccer Hawklets to their first ever State Title, going 27-0-1 on the season; still the only undefeated team in program history. Jason scored the game-winning goal in the 1998 State Championship game against Chaminade and was named All-State and the Metro Player of the Year. He would go on to play at SLU and was drafted to the MLS by the Colorado Rapids.

Hawklets race way to State Title; start path to repeat as champions As the Class 4 Boys State Championship race came to a close in Jefferson City, whispers from the Rockhurst fans began circulating. Teammates, coaches and parents tried recalling which runners finished in which position. But with 165 runners in the race, it’s not an easy task. This has become a familiar routine for Hawklet supporters, especially Head Coach Michael Dierks ‘91, as Rockhurst teams have placed in the top-5 in each of the last five years. After some quick number crunching, soon confirmed by the official results, the Hawklets had won State for the second time in program history. “We had a group of kids who had this goal from the year before, if not earlier, and they never doubted or backed down from putting forth their best effort,” said Coach Dierks. “Seeing that come to fruition proved the life lesson that hard work pays off.”

Continued...

Countless runners and coaches have been working for years to elevate this program to the level it is today. It felt amazing winning another State Championship. It represents all the work that has been put in throughout the program’s existence.

Wes Porter ‘20

For many of the runners who had been part of the team’s “disappointing” 4th place finish in 2017, winning the title in 2018 felt like redemption. That rang especially true for Tom Seitzer ‘19, who placed 3rd individually. As a junior he placed 5th - making him the only Rockhurst runner ever to finish top-5 at State twice. Seitzer was accompanied all season by a group of upperclassmen that kept Rockhurst as a top team in Missouri and the Midwest. Ten runners mixed in the top seven spots throughout the season. And when the team’s other top runner, Wes Porter ‘20, suffered an injury that caused him to miss a majority of the season, his teammates stepped up. Heading into the postseason, Porter’s status was still uncertain. He sat out Districts, but the team still dominated. Rockhurst had its top five runners all finish top-10. Following his individual win at Districts, Seitzer backed it up with another win at Sectionals. The team matched his effort, winning the meet with 45 points. Porter returned for Sectionals - his first race in seven weeks - and took 5th. He was followed by Matt Ingle ‘20 (8th), Will Reboulet ‘19 (14th), Luke Hupke ‘19 (23rd) and Patrick Mullen ‘19 (25th). Other key contributors to this point were Max Goeke ‘19, Ben Legg ‘19 and Michael Donnellan ‘20. Rockhurst knew that they were the favorites heading into State. However, that pressure did not faze any of the runners. Seitzer ran among the top-3 the entire race, leading for part of it. He came through at 15:55, good for 3rd place. Porter was 20 seconds behind in 5th place. The next three runners solidified the team’s win, as Ingle (27th), Hupke (28th) and Reboulet (32nd) finished well ahead of other teams’ corresponding runners. Coach Dierks’ team scored 72 points, with the next best team scoring 110. Now the 2019 Hawklets will look to be the first repeat State Champions in program history. Porter is Missouri’s top returning finisher at State last season. As in years past, Rockhurst will rely on some new faces to step in for the recent graduates in order to get back to the top of the podium in Jefferson City.

Dierks Coaching Philosophy

“Personal responsibility in daily excellence PRIDE. If we come in each day recognizing that each individual has a responsibility to give their best, and believes that if they give their best attitude and effort, great things can happen. And great friendships can be made, because we hold each other accountable to reach our collective excellence. Cross country requires wanting to be intrinsically-motivated, since athletes will be training without people always watching, so building team camaraderie, personal and team goals hopefully helps everyone feel motivated and inspired to do their best.

BIOGRAPHY Entering his 25th year at the school, Head Coach Michael Dierks ‘91 relies upon his runners to be self-motivated and passionate. He recognizes that it is the internal drive which must motivate endurance athletes. In his 23 years as the head coach, the program has qualified for the state meet 13 years (including the past 11 in a row). They have also advanced past the District meet in all but three of his seasons. As a runner at the University of Notre Dame, Coach Dierks has brought a strong pack running philosophy to the program. He is also in his seventh year as the school’s athletic director.

Seniors lead team to State Finals; Coach Severino announces final season “Next man up.” It’s been the motto for Rockhurst football since 1983 when Head Coach Tony Severino took over the program. It’s been the battle cry that has led to 338 wins and seven State titles over the last 36 years. It was yelled from the sidelines in the 2018 State Championship game when Rockhurst called upon backup quarterbacks and running backs. And now it’s the coach’s turn. Following the 2019 season, Rockhurst will turn to a new head coach to lead one of Missouri’s most storied programs. But Coach Severino has only one focus right now, and that’s getting back to the State Championship game. That’s where the Hawklets were headed late last November. After earning a trip to the Class 6 Finals, revenge was on the minds of Coach Severino’s players as they bussed to Columbia, where they would meet CBC. Not only had the Cadets worked the Hawklets 45-7 just six weeks prior, but they had also knocked off Rockhurst the last time The Rock reached the State Title game in 2014.

50

Rockhurst High School All Sports Program

Continued...

Being a part of Coach Sev’s final year at Rockhurst is an incredible honor. The whole team and I want to make this a season to remember for him.

Tucker Atwood ‘20

Despite being known underdogs and without their starting quarterback and running back, the Hawklets did not back down. Following a pick-six by Cooper Krezek ‘19, Rockhurst trailed 21-14 at the half, and again only by seven heading into the fourth quarter. But CBC scored 17 unanswered in the final minutes to win 45-21. Rockhurst finished the season 11-3. The 2018 season was a bit of a roller coaster for Rockhurst. It featured an experienced squad of mostly senior starters (10 of whom were named AllDistrict), but was off to a tough start after dropping the season opener to Columbia Rock Bridge. The Hawklets gave up 33 points and more than 300 rushing yards. The defense made a point to change that. Over the next six games, they would give up just 30 total points, including three shutouts. Perhaps the most impressive effort came in week six against Bishop Miege, a matchup that had not been seen since 1984. Miege has been the defending Kansas 4A Champions since 2014 and known for its offensive firepower. The Stags averaged 45 PPG in 2018. Rockhurst held them to just two touchdowns in a thrilling 14-13 win for the Hawklets. A stingy defense and timely offense were keys to The Rock’s success in 2018. But it was the special teams, and one player in particular, that made two of the biggest plays of the season. With 6:00 remaining against Miege, the Stags had just scored to make it 14-13. They lined up for the extra point kick to tie it, but ran a fake run to the outside. Linebacker Tommy Eckels ‘20 made a shoe-string tackle to save the game. Then, in the State Semifinals against Blue Springs, Eckels broke through the line on a WIldcat field goal attempt that would have given them the lead with 4:00 left in the game. The block solidified Rockhurst’s 14-13 win and punched its ticket to the State Championship. With only a handful of starters returning on either side of the ball, Coach Severino will again look to the “next man up” across the field in his final season at The Rock.

Coaching Philosophy “Trust. Respect. Commitment. Loyalty. Communication. The kids hear those constantly. Those five pillars are what our whole program is based on. I always tell them that I’m going to be firm, fair and compassionate, and they know that. But the players have to learn to trust each other to be a true team. They have to respect each other’s differencesbackgrounds, personalities, origins and religions. Their commitment needs to last year-round and not just the fall. They have to be loyal to their teammates, coaches and school. And communication today is the most important. They have to be able to talk with one another as they work toward one goal.”

BIOGRAPHY Coach Severino is entering his 37th and final season as head football coach. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he earned eight high school varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. Receiving an athletic scholarship to Kansas State University, he completed his undergraduate while playing football there and later earned his Master’s at University of Kansas. He is married (Marilyn), with three sons - all Rockhurst High graduates. Coach Sev feels that Rockhurst’s athletic histories impact the school’s traditions because of the pride everyone feels when they are successful; they never want to let down those who preceded them.

He suffered a heart attack and died while watching his son Joe play in the 1952 Lillis/Rockhurst football game. Every season since the Bukaty Award was established, a senior is selected by the football coaches and players as the recipient of this prestigious honor. The criteria, set by Mr. Alex George and former head football coach Mr. Al Davis, Jr., is to honor the individual player displaying the greatest leadership both on and off the field. The award criteria also state that the individual should lead by example and should have the respect of both players and coaches. Football All-Time Team

In 1970, Rockhurst and DeLaSalle played their 50th and final football game. A select committee from each school named an All-Time Football Team. Twenty years later, during the celebration of Rockhurst’s 75th year of football, the All-Time Team was updated. Rockhurst coaches have reviewed the many years of football teams and individual players and then honored additional players, naming them to the All-Time Hawklet squad yearly with the school criteria of having graduated five years ago. Team takes 3rd at State; Looks forward to continuing winning tradition As the Hawklets hoisted the 3rd Place plaque at Soccer Park in Fenton, MO, they did not know it would be the last of the many trophies won under Head Coach Chris Lawson. In the spring, Coach Lawson announced that he would be stepping down after a wildly successful career at the helm of the program. In his 25 years as head coach, the Hawklets earned 21 Final Four appearances and won seven State Championships. Rewinding three months before that last Final Four appearance, the Hawklets were faced with adversity much earlier than most seasons. They dropped their opening match 1-0 to Park Hill South, which was not a huge surprise, considering the team had graduated 99 goals from the 2017 team. But this shutout loss was used as a teaching moment for Coach Lawson; he was not concerned with the start, but wanted to see how they responded.

We are returning a powerful offense that accounted for 95% of the goals last year. If we can figure out a way to slow down opposing teams’ attack, I believe we can win State.

Liam Bailey ‘20

Their response was another 20-win season and 12th consecutive Final Four appearance for the program. The regular season consisted of the standard challenging schedule for which Coach Lawson had been known. Rockhurst faced top teams from Kansas, Wisconsin, Washington, D.C., Illinois and Colorado. That schedule helped the Hawklets in state play, losing only three games to Missouri teams. Following the regular season, the team seemed to hit its stride going into the playoffs. Another District Championship landed the Hawklets in Sectionals against a confident Blue Springs South team whose coach told reporters that Rockhurst was “prime for the picking”. The Hawklets won that matchup 7-1. At halftime of the State Quarterfinal, Rockhurst trailed Liberty North 1-0. But an offensive push gave the team three goals in the final 40 minutes to punch another ticket to the Final Four. Rockhurst fell 2-0 in the Semifinals to the eventual State Champion CBC. But in what turned out to be Coach Lawson’s final game, the Hawklets battled to a 2-1 victory over Lee’s Summit for a 3rd Place finish. The man chosen as Coach Lawson’s replacement was one of his star players on the 1998 and 1999 State Championship teams, Matt Darby ‘00. Coach Darby also serves as Rockhurst’s Dean of Students and was head coach at Notre Dame de Sion from 2004-2019, where he led Sion to eight top-3 finishes at State and a national ranking each of the last five seasons. “Rockhurst meant so much to me, whether it was in the classroom or on retreats or on the soccer field, in my development during my years as a student here,” said Coach Darby. “The lessons that I learned in practice and on the field were so crucial and instrumental in my development that being able to hopefully pass those on to our current students is something that I couldn’t pass up.” On the field, there is good reason to be excited. The Hawklets return just about all of their offensive firepower from 2018, including leading scorers Thomas Gansner ‘20 and Liam Bailey ‘20. They will, however, need to find replacements for key defenders. “We graduated a lot of defense, but I think our program is such that there’s enough depth and talent that we can just restock,” said Coach Darby.

HEAD COACH

Matt

Darby Coaching Philosophy

“My three big hallmarks are focus, effort and heart. We try to teach these players that of course the game of soccer is fun and they should enjoy it, but when they can also be focused, put in the effort and love what they’re doing, then the results come along with the enjoyment. Ultimately, it’s just playing day-in and day-out, getting better and loving being on the field with teammates. They have to understand that they’re not perfect and mistakes will be made, but the formation comes when they learn from those mistakes and they get back up and try again.”

While our soccer program has been quite successful since its days beginning in the winter, the All-Time Team is an addition to recognize individual players who were hallmark players and instrumental to the success of the program in their eras. Submission for membership to the squad can be submitted to the Athletic Director or head coach, with credentials as to why their high school soccer career warrants consideration. A Columbia Hickman High Kewpie, he stayed in Columbia to earn his Bachelor’s in Classics and Master’s in Spanish. A two-year letterman in high school, Tecnico was the team leader in yellow cards one season. Among his hobbies include playing soccer, listening to 80s and 90s college music and annoying his wife Becky. But they have plenty of things to keep them busy as they chase after their daughter, Audrey Kay, and son, Lemuel.

Dan Shaver Starting his fifth year, Coach Shaver will serve as the coach of the JV team. He is a product of Jesuit education including both St. Louis U. High and Rockhurst University. At SLUH, he was a two sport athlete as a soccer goalkeeper and track hurdler, and at RU, he graduated with degrees in Math, Secondary Education and Philosophy. Prior to coming to The Rock to teach Mathematics, he served as the varsity head coach at Bishop Ward High School for three seasons. Outside of school, he enjoys running and seeing movies with his wife, Claire. Coach Shaver is also moderator of the Yell Leaders.

Aquahawks work to top-5 finish; plan to return as top team in Missouri As the Aquahawks walked into the St. Peter’s Rec-Plex outside of St. Louis for the State Championship Meet, they knew where the projections had them finishing: 13th place. For the Rockhurst swimmers and divers, that was unacceptable. Over the next two days, each swimmer and diver would need to push himself to climb the rankings to return among the top teams in Missouri, following the team’s 11th place finish in 2017. Rockhurst’s athletes clawed their way to new personal bests and multiple finals qualifications. That included all three relay teams and four individual events earning All-State (top-8) honors. These efforts led to a 5th Place finish for Rockhurst. Standing out from the rest of the competition was Dylan Nill ‘21, who was All-State in four events, the maximum number in which a swimmer is allowed to compete. He was 5th in the 200 Free, a member on relay teams placing 3rd and 7th, and was the State Champion in the 500 Free.

124

Rockhurst High School All Sports Program

The team this year has many strengths we can build upon, and most importantly is our toughness.

Reece Manning ‘21

Continued... Reece Manning ‘21 took 5th in the 200 IM and was part of two relay teams. Henry Kasyjanski ‘19 was 8th in the 50 Free and also on two relay teams. Collectively, the Hawklets scored 165 points. Coach Winkeler noted that 2018 was an important season for setting the program’s culture and environment going forward. History indicates that Coach Winkeler knows how to build a winning culture. As head of the swim and dive program from 1999-2014, he led Rockhurst to 11 consecutive State titles before stepping down. He rejoined the Aquahawks in 2018 and is thankful for the senior leadership of last year’s team, which included Kasyjanski, Colin McCann and Jack Murphy, all graduates in the Class of 2019. Their guidance set the tone for Rockhurst’s quest to reclaim the title of State Champs. “Last year was all about transition and solidifying a culture that brings out the best in our boys,” said Coach Winkeler. “The culture of the team is only partly based on what happens in the pool and on the diving board. It’s also about what goes on in the classroom, what these kids do together away from the pool, the Masses we celebrate together. The culture is the family aspect in everything they do.” Often times, getting the athletes to buy in is what can differentiate a good team from a great team. “Championship programs don’t always win State, but to be a Championship program you have to have strong leadership, culture and work ethic,” said Coach Winkeler. “Then you have to have strong diving performances and be able to qualify all three relays for State.” With several returning All-State swimmers from 2018, including Nill, Manning, Mark Holewinski ‘20, Sam Seymour ‘20, Mike Slaney ‘20, Jack McAnany ‘21 and Thomas Tietjen ‘21 and at least five State-caliber divers, the Aquahawks are confident heading into 2019. “We were really proud of our team’s attitude and drive this season,” said Manning.

HEAD COACH

Paul

Winkeler

Coaching Philosophy “It begins with family, love and team. You have to give of yourself to a cause that’s greater than yours. By doing that, you personally are going to reach new heights that you’ve never reached before because you’re not doing it for yourself. And our big mantra is ‘Day 2’. That’s referencing the second and final day at State when you earn points. Day 1 is prelims, and although you may have had the best races of your life, you haven’t earned a point yet. So after you’ve given your very best, now what do you have left to give on Day 2? It’s all about that second effort.”

Seniors lead squad to seventeen straight wins; new faces to fill voids The target on the backs of the Basketball Hawklets grew with every win. As the hype around the 2018-19 Rockhurst team grew, so did the crowds, competition and intensity. Five straight wins turned into ten straight, which turned into 17 straight. The Hawklets were starting to appear on national rankings. But the best start in program history was no surprise for a team that had high expectations for itself. Coming off of a State Quarterfinal appearance in 2017-18, Head Coach Pete Campbell ‘89 returned four top players as part of a sensational senior class. They had spent the entire offseason working to make the State Final Four. Between Darrius Hughes, Glen McClintock, Tyler Nelson and AJ White, all members of the Class of 2019, varsity experience was a huge factor in the team’s early success. All four had been featured as starters during their junior campaigns. Marcus Teahan ‘19 also became a crucial piece in the lineup. From the first tipoff in late-November, the Hawklets were off and running. The Blue Springs Tournament culminated in a

comeback championship win over Bentonville (Ark.), as McClintock tipped in his own shot right before the buzzer. Tournament champions would become a familiar title. Hughes, Nelson and McClintock were named to the All-Tournament Team. Rockhurst sat at 7-0 heading into a game circled on everyone’s calendars - Miege. The Stags entered the season as the three-time defending Kansas State Champions. In front of a packed home gym, the Hawklets held off Miege 55-52, led by Nelson’s 19 points. The William Jewell Holiday Tournament was next, and Coach Campbell’s squad cruised to the Cardinal Division Championship, winning the three games by 40, 12 and 16 points. Hughes was the Division MVP and was joined by White on the AllTournament Team. The final regular season tournament was Liberty’s C.W. Stessman Tournament. After beating KC East and Staley, Rockhurst faced Lee’s Summit North for the second time in the season. The Hawklets had beaten the Broncos 69-57 in the season opener. In the Stessman Championship, the seniors led the way to a 77-64 victory. Nelson, Championship Game MVP, scored 23, McClintock and Hughes both had 17 and White added 15. The next game marked another rivalry home win, this time over Shawnee Mission East, put the Hawklets at 17-0. The streak would end the following game against Blue Springs South, who hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to hand Rockhurst its first defeat. The regular season would end with a 20-3 record. The District Tournament was hosted by Lee’s Summit North, in what turned out to be unfortunate luck. Following a semifinal win over Ruskin, Rockhurst and LSN would square off for the third time. Players and coaches know how hard it is beating a team three times in one season - especially a team good enough to go on to place 3rd at State. That proved to be the harsh reality for the Hawklets, stopped short of their ultimate goal. Hughes, McClintock, Nelson and White were named to the All-District Team, and Hughes and McClintock were also named All-State. Despite losing a majority of the team’s scoring from 2018-19, Coach Campbell is very excited for a new crop of players to step into varsity roles. One underclassman who did earn a lot of playing time was Mason Thompson ‘21, who will be an experienced presence for a young team.

Coaching Philosophy “When you walk into my classroom the first thing you see is a sign that reads ‘Attitude and Effort’. That’s who I am to my core, and what I preach to my students and to my players. In life there are two things that you can control: attitude toward things, and how much effort and positive energy you put into yourself and your life. Things can happen around you… how are you going to respond to that? How hard are you going to work at something to be better? At the end of the day, if you give your best effort and you do it with great enthusiasm, you can always live with the results - in life and in basketball.”

BIOGRAPHY Coach Campbell ‘89 begins his seventh year as head coach following 18 years as an assistant. While a player for The Rock, he helped bring home a basketball State Title in 1989; a feat made possible in part due to his game-winning shot to make it out of the quarterfinals, and also in 2013 when he was the varsity assistant coach for the State Championship team. He went on to get his BA from Mizzou and MA at Baker. He is married with three kids: Catelyn, and twins Emma and Will. Coach Campbell served as the athletic director for six years but has returned to the classroom and teaches freshman Math. Without coaching or teaching, Coach Campbell says he would be broke - he can’t do anything else.

Underclassmen set new mentality for success; excitement builds Building a successful program takes building blocks. The Rockhurst wrestling program believes that those pieces are beginning to fall into place. It starts with the athletes themselves. The majority of the 2018-19 team consisted of underclassmen, with 20 of 29 members being freshmen or sophomores. According to team members, having wrestlers in the program remain committed and continue improving each year are necessities. “With only one senior last season, we lacked the experience to show some of the younger wrestlers the proper technique,” said Miles Rivard ‘21. “Also, having multiple seniors leaders who care about the team makes everybody else on the team much more confident in themselves.” The Class of 2019 had just one senior on the roster, which left more leadership to be desired, but also gave several underclassmen opportunities to compete at the varsity level. That experience can be invaluable down the road.

Our focus is on keeping guys invested in the program, and committing to offseason workouts multiple times a week.

Miles Rivard ‘21

The Rockhurst wrestlers with the most wins on the season were Eli Franklin ‘22, Judson Dull ‘20, Jon Lampton ‘20, Kyle Wynne ‘20 and Rivard. Franklin, Dull Lampton, Robbie Connell ‘21, Jared Smith ‘22 and Andrew Mysenburg ‘20 all wrestled their way into the District Quarterfinals. The group believes that everyone buying into a team mentality will be a major factor in the potential success this winter. “I think team goals this year include finishing the season above .500 and ending the year with the same amount of guys who started in the fall,” said Wynne. One addition to the Hawklets’ roster is very familiar with wrestling success at The Rock. Newly-named head coach Jon Valdiviez is the father of the two most successful wrestlers in program history. He has committed himself to being a youth wrestling coach and official, which adds a vast amount of experience, resources and an understanding of the Rockhurst wrestling program. His sons Cameron and Colin Valdiviez, both members of the Class of 2017, combined for eight State qualifications, more than 300 wins, more than 200 pins and three individual State Championships. They were also both named AllAmericans before wrestling collegiately. “I’m excited because Rockhurst is an amazing place” said Coach Valdiviez. “I get to work with some of the best people in Kansas City; I am blessed they asked me to be part of family and help with this program.” Rockhurst now looks to its wrestlers making the necessary commitment year-round to attain continued success. That includes stamina and endurance training, weightlifting and technique practice. If team members hold each other accountable, then positive results should be the outcome. “This season, I think realistic goals should be making every dual competitive and hopefully earning a few State qualifiers,” said Wynne.

Coaching Philosophy “Nothing makes me more proud than watching one of my wrestlers be complimented for the way he handled himself after a match - win or lose. Wrestling has so much to do with just having a correct mindset. Then it’s about imposing your will on an opponent and the situation in which you find yourself. Successful wrestlers create predictable reactions and take advantage of those. But the most important thing is that successful wrestlers have to be is willing to spend the time. They have to buy in. After that, the passion and love start to build.”

BIOGRAPHY Coach Valdiviez is a life-long resident of the Kansas City metro area. He graduated from Archbishop O’Hara High School and the University of Missouri.. He and his wife, Rachel, have four children. Lindsey, STA class of 2014, Colin and Cameron, both Rockhurst Class of 2017 and Nathan, a sophomore at St. Michael the Archangel. Both Colin and Cameron competed for the Rockhurst wrestling team, earning three State Titles between them. Coach Valdiviez is a passionate sports enthusiast, having played football and baseball, as well as competed in track and wrestling in high school. His freshman year in high school the wrestling coach encouraged him to give wrestling a try and there he found and began his love of the sport. In 2004 he began his journey as a wrestling coach, devoting countless hours mat-side and behind the wheel, traveling the country coaching not only his boys, but hundreds of other young kids in several competitive clubs. He has spent the last six years as a coach for the Greater Heights youth wrestling club, a team that has produced many State Champions, won the last 17 State Team Titles and has watched many of their youth move on to D1 college wrestling. He is a constant student of the sport of wrestling, has sought out and studied the coaching of many of the greats of the sport and is always looking for the opportunity to improve his knowledge in order to develop and build the skills of his athletes. He has also attained his MSHSAA wrestling officials certification and spent a year putting himself in the center of the mat, where he learned first-hand that he enjoyed the corner better. Coach Valdiviez feels honored and privileged to have the opportunity to be part of the Rockhurst community and looks forward to helping the wrestling program grow.

Hawklets make playoff run on diamond; hope to take next step in 2020 Ninety feet was the difference. The 2019 Baseball Hawklets were that close from making a great season a historic season. In a textbook pitcher’s duel against Staley in the State Quarterfinals, the Falcons were able to manufacture one run in the 4th inning against Rockhurst ace, Stone Hewlett ‘20. The Hawklets tried to counter, putting themselves in scoring opportunities, but could not find the timely hit to tie it up and eventually fell 1-0. But the season will be remembered for District and Sectional Championships, the program’s first since 2012. Rockhurst also won back-to-back District Titles for the first time since 2011-12. Entering the 2019 season, the Hawklets returned only two starting position players, Luke Schafer ‘19 and Jaxson Wentworth ‘19. As mostly new faces took the field for The Rock, a slow start was not too surprising. There was the 20-5 win over Blue Springs, but then the 4-0 loss to Blue Valley. Head Coach Jim DeGraw’s squad was looking for its identity.

We have a lot of returners so we’ll be very experienced. But I think for us to really take the next step, we have to stay focused and to get the most out of each player.

Sam Brady ‘20

After sitting at 6-6 on the season, the Hawklets found their groove. They rallied off a stretch of nine of 10 wins in April, relying on strong pitching and defense. In six of those games, Rockhurst surrendered three or fewer runs. Highlighting the stretch was a 3-0 record in the River City Classic in Lawrence. The Hawklets won all three games by one run, culminating in a 2-1 victory over Shawnee Mission North, in which Jacob Poletis ‘19 threw a complete game fourhitter. The 6-0 win over Olathe East on May 6 was Coach DeGraw’s 400th career win at Rockhurst. His team entered the postseason sitting at 17-10 and the #1 seed in the District. They cruised past Grandview 9-0 in the semifinals and defeated Lee’s Summit 8-4 to bring home the District 13 Title. Then came a familiar foe in the Sectional Championship: Blue Springs South. The two teams faced off in the same game in 2018, which was a 10-4 Jaguar win that ended the Hawklets’ season. The 2019 result would be different. The Hawklets exploded for 11 runs, scoring 10 in the first four innings en route to the Sectional Championship. Runs were not as easy to come by seven days later in the State Quarterfinals and Rockhurst’s season concluded at 22-10 and the #10 ranking in Missouri. Schafer and Wentworth capped their Rockhurst careers with All-State honors and showed their teammates a year below them how to do things the right way. The duo hands the reins over to a talented and hungry group. Among those new leaders are Hewlett, Sam Brady ‘20 and Chuck Ingram ‘20, who were each All-District selections as juniors. Hewlett and Brady, both lefthanded pitchers, were difference makers on the mound in 2019. Hewlett led the team with 45.1 innings pitched and boasted an ERA of 1.08. He impressed at the plate as well, leading in hits, runs scored and stolen bases. Brady threw 41.2 innings and maintained a 2.18 ERA, while also manning center field most games. Ingram served as a do-it-all utility player who was second on the team in RBIs. The Hawklets will return 13 varsity lettermen for the 2020 campaign.

HEAD COACH

Jim

DeGraw

Coaching Philosophy “I take the approach of coaching the kids individually. I’m not a coach who’s going to sit there in the dugout and constantly yell at players to try to motivate them. You have to speak with them personally and work together on how to continue improving. If a mental mistake or an error is made, part of my job is to give them confidence and let them know that it’s okay. This is baseball - you have to be able to overcome a situation and move on or it perpetuates itself.”

ASSISTANT COACH Nick Vaughn A teacher and coach at Rockhurst for over 15 years, Coach Vaughn dedicates his time to teaching Biology and coaching Freshman baseball. A native of Lee’s Summit, he attended Lee’s Summit North, UMKC for his BA and Webster University for his MA. Coach Vaughn is married to Lisa and they have two daughters, Amelia and Claire. Coach Vaughn cannot pick one favorite coaching memory because each year new memories and bonds form with players and he doesn’t think he could pick a best because there are so many great ones.

Jake Bradshaw Coach Bradshaw is in his third year on the Rockhurst faculty, but has been an assistant varsity baseball coach for the last four seasons. He is also in his first season as the head coach of the sophomore football team, after two years with the freshman team. Coach Bradshaw was a three-sport athlete for Oak Park (football, basketball and baseball) and went on to play both football and baseball at Kansas City Community College and NW Missouri St. He is married to Brittany and they have four children.

Mike Holmes Coach Holmes enters his third baseball season at Rockhurst with the same enthusiasm he has had for more than 60 years. Energetic and passionate about the game of baseball are the best ways to describe him. His coaching experiences range from tee ball to summer collegiate players and beyond. He has played in and/or coached in seven amateur adult national championship games with five championships. He also previously “enjoyed” a 20+ year career as an umpire, including collegiate and high school levels. He teaches junior and senior English at Rockhurst. Coach Holmes is married to Jill, a life-long teacher.

Golfers record historic Sectional round; look to improve on 3rd place finish From the first drive off the first tee in mid-March, the Golf Hawklets knew they could have something special on their hands. Despite three new faces filling the five varsity spots, Rockhurst started the season impressively. They won the first two tournaments of the season, led by individual winner Liam Coughlin ‘21 both rounds. The sophomore, who tied for 17th at State as a freshman, shot par-72 each round. In the seasonopening Truman Invitational, Will King ‘22 took 3rd overall in his firsty high school competition and at the Klint Andrews Invitational. Michael Bessenbacher ‘20 took 2nd. Head Coach Mark Nusbaum’s team then headed west to once again play in the Terra Lago Champions’ Invitational. Rockhurst competed among 40 of the best teams in the western U.S., including schools from California, Nevada, Arizona and Texas. Past individual champs include Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Beau Hossler. Every year it is a great bonding experience for the team. The Hawklets returned to Missouri, ready to get back to their

winning ways. They did just that at the Park Hill Invitational, but then took a step backwards at the Camdenton Invitational, placing 5th against teams they would see again at the State Tournament. After resetting, Rockhurst won the Jefferson City Tournament, taking four of the top five spots. Bessenbacher and King tied for 1st, Coughlin placed 3rd and Jack Dwyer ‘19 tied for 4th. By this point, the team chemistry had molded. In what many would consider the most “individualized” sport, golf has a team aspect at Rockhurst. A strong one. It’s true even when the five varsity team members all season spanned across four grade levels - one freshman, one sophomore, two juniors and one senior. “Knowing that I have a team behind me motivates me on the course much more than when I’m playing for myself in summer tournaments,” said Evan Highfill ‘20. “Our team chemistry comes from just hanging out during van rides, eating meals together when we travel and genuinely rooting for each other.” That rooting could be heard during one of the most exciting rounds of the season, a dual against Shawnee Mission East, the eventual Kansas 6A Champions. The match came down to the final group of golfers, playing in front of a large crowd. The Hawklets held on for the 8.5-7.5 victory. The District and Sectional Championships seemingly came easy. Rockhurst shot 314 at Districts with the next best team 35 strokes behind. Dwyer tied for the individual championship, Coughlin was 3rd, King was 4th, Bessenbacher was 5th and Highfill was 6th. All earned All-District honors. Sectionals would be a memorable day; one in which “everything clicked” according to Coach Nusbaum. The Hawklets shot 291, the third lowest par-72 round in state history, per MSHSAA’s website. Coughlin shot two-under to take home the win, followed by Dwyer in 2nd at one-under, King in 3rd at two-over and Highfill in 6th at four-over. The two-day State Tournament would be a rollercoaster. After the first round, Rockhurst sat in 4th, but five teams were within six strokes of each other. Throughout the final round, four schools leap-frogged for the lead, with Lafayette, Jackson, Chaminade and Rockhurst each taking the top spot at times. The Hawklets would fall two shots short of the winner, and then drop to 3rd Place from a tiebreaker loss with Chaminade. But the Hawklets still earned the program’s 18th consecutive top-3 finish at State, and Dwyer and Coughlin earned All-State honors, both tied for 7th. With four players returning for 2020, Rockhurst will look to move up the podium.

Coaching Philosophy “I have to try to create a team out of an individual sport. And that’s tough at times. But getting them to understand the ‘team concept’ is my pride and joy - when they start enjoying playing with each other and for each other. Our success comes from the way our guys play the game. At our team meetings, we just talk about doing it ‘the right way’. You treat the game with respect, you treat your opponent with respect and you treat your teammates with respect.”

BIOGRAPHY Coach Mark Nusbaum is back for his second year as head golf coach. As a former Hall of Fame basketball coach for the Hawklets, he retired from teaching in 2015. He says that he missed the kids and many former players (golfers and basketball players) know what he brings to the table in terms of attitude and effort. Coach Nusbaum was a four-sport, ninetime lettermen at Marshalltown High School, IA. He taught and coached locally at O’Hara and Liberty before coming to The Rock and teaching Mathematics. While he didn’t play golf in high school, he has plenty of experience in managing the game, both the mental side and the team dynamics. He also sports a nine handicap. Coach Nusbaum now teaches math at St. Thomas Aquinas. He and his wife, Kris, have two sons (Drew and Jameson) and one daughter (Carly).

Runners-up in LAKC, Rock comes up just short; returners want title With five minutes remaining in the LAKC Championship, Rockhurst had its window for a comeback. Shawnee Mission East just committed a penalty while leading 9-7 and the Hawklets went “man up”. The Hawklets created two great scoring opportunities, but one shot bounced just wide and the other glanced off the goalie’s leg. Looking back on a 16-3 season and runner-up finish in the LAKC, Head Coach Tim Reidy ‘02 and his team are proud of what they accomplished. They beat three tough St. Louis teams, overcame disheartening injuries and adopted a new playing style mid-season. Entering the 2019 season, Rockhurst looked forward to a prolific offensive output. The team returned Mason Vasta ‘20 who notched 39 goals in 2018, joined by William Muehlebach ‘19, Blake Hager ‘19 and Luke Looney ‘19, who all recorded doubledigit goals as juniors.

This year’s team can win the LAKC Championship by building upon the foundation that last year’s seniors set. They showed us how to work hard and establish a winning culture.

Tommy Eckels ‘20

Spring got off to a hot start. The Hawklets rallied off six consecutive wins off the bat, including two 18-1 victories. Over the final weekend in March, Rockhurst traveled to St. Louis for three games in three days. Friday marked an 11-7 win over CBC, followed by Saturday’s 8-4 win over Chaminade. Fatigue showed during Sunday’s 13-12 loss to SLUH, but Coach Reidy was very pleased with his team’s effort throughout the weekend. Less pleasing, though, was the loss of two key Hawklets due to injuries. In the season’s tenth game, Vasta suffered a hip injury and would be out for the remainder of the year. Despite playing in only half of the team’s games, he scored 24 goals and still earned All-Metro honors. Looney suffered a head injury that led to the majority of his remaining season on the sidelines. Following a 9-2 loss to East in early-April, the Hawklets decided to throw out any excuses and found ways to win. This was evident in the team’s 4-3 win over De Smet, which was ranked #1 in Missouri at the time. “When Looney and Vasta went down with injuries, that put us in a tough spot,” said Coach Reidy. “But as Rockhurst teams tend to do, the next guy stepped in and as a team we got grittier and found ways to win close games. And that De Smet game proved we could still be a great team.” One of those ways was relying on a stingy defense, led by Tommy Eckels ‘20, who would be selected as a U.S. Lacrosse All-American - the 20th in program history. Eckels was backed by All-Metro defender Bobby Froeschl ‘19 and All-Metro goalie Michael Kuklenski ‘20. And on the other end of the field, Crosby Gassaway ‘19, Hager, Muehlebach and Michael Nulton ‘20 led the way in timely scoring. Rockhurst entered the LAKC Tournament as the #2 seed and beat Blue Valley Eastside 11-1 in the quarterfinals. The semifinals served as a showdown with Pembroke Hill, and like earlier in the season, the Hawklets came away with a 10-8 victory. But in the back-and-forth championship game, East came out on top after an intense 4th quarter. Now the 2020 Hawklets, led by a strong senior class, will look to return as league champions. “I think the bond we have with one another will set us apart from the rest of the league,” said Eckels.

Coaching Philosophy “As I’ve evolved as a coach, I’ve learned that it’s about team building and it’s about the relationships. The talent is going to be there. But the task is finding the team’s drive and motivation and then putting the emphasis on preparation and execution. I’ve really tried to move in that direction of leadership development and how I can impart that on the boys. Championships are great, but I’m more concerned with molding these young men and helping teach them life lessons.”

Squad puts another banner on the wall; young core ready to fill roles Every year for the last quarter-century, the Rockhurst tennis program has played its way into the Final Four. In some seasons, the road had been easy. That was not the case in 2019. The Hawklets had to battle, and avenge a regular season loss, to earn a trip back to Springfield. Coming off of a State runner-up finish in 2018, Head Coach Mark Mills’ squad had its work cut out. They would need to replace five out eight varsity players from the year before. A bit of inexperience was evident out of the gate, but Rockhurst was able to pull out victories over stellar Kansas schools Blue Valley Northwest and Blue Valley North in the opening week. The first two tournaments of the season would be confident boosts, as the Hawklets beat all three Lee’s Summit West Invitational opponents 9-0, and then swept all three opponents 3-0 in the Pembroke Hill Doubles Tournament. Suffering rare back-to-back losses, Rockhurst would need to regroup. They had a tough 7-5 defeat to eventual Kansas State

Champions, Shawnee Mission East, and then dropped the match to Liberty, 5-4. Making matters worse, the Hawklets has won all three doubles matches, but then followed that effort by losing 5-1 in singles. “Liberty has had a really good team the last two years, so we knew they were going to come after us,” said Coach Mills. “Them beating us like that, I think that woke up our guys a little bit.” Rockhurst knew there was a good chance they would see the Blue Jays again in the post-season. The Hawklets’ regular season ended with three match losses. For Rockhurst’s most successful athletic program, that was more losses than in most years, but Coach Mills chalked it up to going through some growing pains in singles. Doubles were the strength of this squad. Sweeping the competition at Districts, the Hawklets would earn their rematch with Liberty in Sectionals. This time the team made some matchup adjustments, which led to singles wins on courts #1 and #2. Those would solidify Rockhurst’s 5-1 team win and punched the ticket back to the Final Four. Players also found individual success at Districts and Sectionals. Andrew Kopulos ‘20 was District singles champion and Hudson Kotre ‘19 was 2nd. In doubles, the team of Donovan Walsh ‘19 and Nate Bodde ‘19 won both Districts and Sectionals, the team of Ian Atwater ‘19 Grant Wiedeman ‘22 placed 2nd at both, earning State qualifications. In the team competition at State, Rockhurst met fellow Jesuit school St. Louis University High in the semifinals. After taking a 2-1 lead in doubles, the Hawklets could not continue the momentum in singles and eventually fell 5-3. Rockhurst would bounce back in the 3rd place game, beating Joplin 5-2 and putting yet another banner on the walls of Rockhurst’s Loyola Center gymnasium. As the sights turn to the 2020 season, Coach Mills and his team will look to a solid core of underclassmen who gained valuable experience in 2019 to keep the program’s success steady.

Coaching Philosophy “I want people to look at our program, to respect our program, and to want to emulate our program. And that all is based on the kids themselves and how they approach the game. I tell our players all the time to worry about what you can control. In the match, just focus on your game and your attitude. But as a coach, it’s much bigger than that. They need to know to strive for excellence in every area of their lives. Be the best tennis player you can be, but also be the best teammate, friend, brother, son and Christian you can be.”

Runners and vaulter set four school records; more in sights in 2020 After a tornado hit Jefferson City, the host site of the State Championship Track & Field Meet, an audible was called. The standard two-day meet had to be condensed into a one-day championship meet for Class 5 at Battle High School in Columbia. First-year head coach Troy Harding had to work with his team on dealing with the sudden change to a meet they had been working toward for months. Entering the 2019 season, the middle and long distance runners would provide consistency in points all season. Coming off of a cross country State Championship in the fall, several runners maintained their efforts in the spring, including Tom Seitzer ‘19, Wes Porter ‘20, Luke Hupke ‘19, Ben Legg ‘19, Patrick Mullen ‘19 and Matthew Ingle ‘19. But in order to win regular season meets and score points in the post-season, more events needed to step up. One athlete up for the challenge was Brendan Safley ‘20, who had cleared 13-0 in his first year pole vaulting as a sophomore. Safley trained all off-season and was ready for new heights. In just the second meet of the season at Shawnee Mission South he cleared 14-4,

beating the school record that had stood since 1977. He would continue setting new standards throughout the season. Breaking records was a theme in 2019. Also at Shawnee Mission South, the 4x1600 set a new school record time of 18:09.34. The team was comprised of Hupke, Ingle, Porter and Seitzer. Four days later in Springfield, Porter ran 4:16.95 in the 1600, surpassing the program’s best mark since 2001. To the surprise of few, it was broken again a few weeks later at the Kansas Relays. Among some of the best competition in the Midwest, Seitzer and Porter took the top spots in the 1600, with Seitzer running 4:15.56 and Porter finishing 0.08 seconds behind. The duo would be part of one more school record on the season. At the Rockhurst Relays, they combined with Hupke and Thomas Chastain ‘19 to run a new best of 10:19.00 in the distance medley relay, which broke the previous record that stood for 19 years. In the sprint events, seasoned veterans Joe Coit ‘19, Clint Purcell ‘19, Cooper Krezek ‘19 and Micah Nelson ‘19 led the way. Then Max Hill ‘21 came on to the scene. The sophomore contended for the team’s top spot in the 100, 200, both hurdle events and long jump. Along with them, many other athletes rose to the occasion at Districts. Out of 19 possible events, Rockhurst qualified for Sectionals in 14 of them and placed 2nd as a team. Safley and Hill were individual winners in the pole vault and long jump, respectively. The Hawklets would take 2nd at Sectionals as well, qualifying seven events for State. That included Porter and Seitzer, who finished 1-2 in both the 1600 and 3200 and were members of the 2nd place 4x800 relay. Hill and Safley were also individual Sectional champs. The 4x100 relay earned a qualification, as did high jumper Marcus Teahan ‘19. Athletes at the State Championship, especially multi-event athletes, had to endure the condensed schedule. All-State performances were turned in by Porter, who took 2nd in the 1600 and 6th in the 3200, Safley, who finished 4th in the pole vault with a new best mark of 15-0, and the 7th place 4x100 relay team of Coit, Krezek, Hill and Purcell. The 2020 squad will look for more pieces to develop around those three returning All-State athletes.

Coaching Philosophy “My job as a coach is not only to get kids to enjoy sports, but to teach them that if they stay committed and work hard, then they’re going to see improvements. And not every athlete will have the opportunity to become the best in the state. But I just want to see kids enjoy what they’re doing and be better one week than they were the last; then they realize that’s what commitment and hard work do. They can take that off the track and apply that to whatever they want to do in life.”
