Letter from the

Board Chair Fr. Baum’s Contributions to RHS Include Building on the Tradition of Athletic Excellence In April 2016, Rev. Terrence A. Baum, SJ, announced that he will he will conclude his service as the 16th President of Rockhurst High School at the conclusion of the 2016-17 school year. Fr. Baum has served The Rock well during his 12-year tenure, shepherding our community through significant improvements in capital project, educational, endowment and diversity initiatives. But what about our athletic programs? As the son of a career high school PE teacher and coach, and the sibling of two athletically gifted brothers, Fr. Baum had an early and prolonged exposure to sports. He played CYO football and basketball as a parochial school student in Lorain, Ohio, west of Cleveland. In high school, he participated for a year each in football, basketball and tennis, but devoted most of his co-curricular time and talents to the music, theatre and student government programs. As a young scholastic at St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago, he coached the varsity tennis team (although he admits that this involved little coaching of tennis skills, as most of the team were already accomplished players). “I have always been a big supporter of athletic programs because they teach valuable lessons to our students, particularly team sports in which one often must make personal sacrifices in favor of the whole, an endeavor consistent with our Jesuit mission,” Fr. Baum says. Fr. Baum has been a blessing to the Rockhurst community. With God’s guidance and your prayers, we are committed to securing a new president who will continue to build upon The Rock, in academics, in mission, in service, and in all co-curricular activities, including athletics. Sincerely yours,

Jonathan R. Haden

Welcome from the

President Welcome to Rockhurst High School. On behalf of the entire school community, I hope your visit is an enjoyable one. If you are at all familiar with high school athletics in Kansas City, you know that Rockhurst High School has had a wonderful tradition since its opening in 1914. Alumni and friends have tremendous pride for the level of competition that has taken place with so many schools from across the nation for over 100 years. There is no doubt that this excellence will continue in the future as many more young men devote themselves to the betterment of mind, body and spirit. Rockhurst High School enjoys a marvelous amount of respect and support from the greater metropolitan area for its dedication to educating men of competence, conscience and compassion. These are qualities that the Society of Jesus holds very dear for students which truly lead them to become “men for others.” I am proud of our students who are nobly carrying on the Rockhurst High School tradition for the Greater Glory of God. Please join me in honoring both teams today with a healthy spirit of sportsmanship. Pray with me for them that they will perform to their God-given potential and be free from injury. You may also be assured of my prayers in the coming year for God’s blessings upon you and your family. Sincerely yours,

Father Terrence Baum, SJ PRESIDENT

In the spirit of Saint Ignatius Loyola, its goal is the formation of the whole person within a diverse and desciplined environment, as one who is open to growth, strives for academic excellence, is religious, loving and committed to justice through service.

Welcome from the

PrincipAL Welcome to Rockhurst High School. I especially welcome our visitors and guests. Rockhurst has a strong tradition of excellence in athletics. I believe that our athletic program plays an important role in our goal of educating young men, in the Jesuit tradition, to be leaders. Athletic competition provides a means for our students to identify and develop their God-given talents. Participation in our athletic program teaches our student athletes to work hard, become part of something greater than themselves, practice good sportsmanship, and deal with success and disappointment. Being part of a team and working together creates enduring memories of life at Rockhurst; these memories will last a life time. I offer my sincere thanks to Mr. Michael Dierks, Athletic Director, his assistant, Mr. Kevin McGill, and to the coaches, managers, trainers, team physicians, parent volunteers, and statisticians. Our superb program would not be possible without the tireless dedication of these individuals. I am also grateful to Coach Dierks, Mr. Robbie Haden, director of communications, and graduate Curran Steck for their tremendous effort in publishing this year’s edition of the All Sports Program. As an alumnus of the class of 1981, many of my memories of life at Rockhurst are of joining my classmates as we cheered for the Hawklets. I look forward to, once again, cheering on the Hawklets with students, parents, friends, alumni, past parents, and fans of Rockhurst. Thank you for your dedication to Rockhurst High School. Sincerely yours,

Greg Harkness

ROCKHURST ADMISSIONS

Admission Information To apply for admission to Rockhurst High School, contact the Admission Office to obtain an application packet. This includes all the forms necessary for application to Rockhurst. Once all materials are turned in, the admissions committee reviews each application to determine how Rockhurst can best serve the applicant and his family.

Open House Rockhurst hosts an Open House each year to give young men in grades six through eight and their families a chance to tour the school. The Open House allows the families to see the school’s facilities and meet with current faculty and students. This year's Open House will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, October 30, 2016. Visit Program The Visit Program is another great way for prospective eighth graders to get a sense of a typical day at Rockhurst. Each participant spends a day “shadowing” one of our freshman through his daily class schedule. Shadow visits are scheduled on most Thursdays and Fridays from October through March. Select Mondays and Wednesdays will also be available in the fall. Visitors report to the Admissions Office at 8:30 a.m. and stay until the end of the regular school day. As an added bonus, lunch is on us! Call the Admission Office to schedule your visit or you may also visit our website to select a shadow day. Placement Test Every student who plans to enroll in any Catholic high school in either Kansas or Missouri must take a standardized placement test. The test will be administered at Rockhurst High School at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2016 and Saturday, January 7, 2017. Results of the test will be used to identify potential candidates for honors classes and also help the admission committee determine

summer school attendance. Financial Aid Rockhurst annually awards $2.2 million in financial assistance to its students. The financial aid awarded to students varies according to individual merit and financial circumstances. Aid awards are determined after taking into account an analysis by an independent agency of the family’s need, the applicant’s academic performance, and his enthusiasm for a Rockhurst education. Thanks to the generosity of alumni and other donors, Rockhurst awards scholarships to many of our incoming and returning students. With few exceptions, scholarship awards are based strictly upon merit and financial need. Aid eligibility requires that a family file a financial aid statement with the Director of Admission and Financial Aid, but no separate application is necessary to receive scholarships. In addition to need-based scholarships, an incoming freshman may qualify for either the President’s Scholarship or Ignatian Scholarship based on his composite score on the high school placement test.To be eligible for either scholarship, an eight grader must have: • B+ average in his seventh and eighth grade years • Received a positive teacher’s recommendation • Taken the placement test at Rockhurst High School

A President’s Scholarship, valued at $2,000 is awarded to students who score in the 99th percentile on the high school placement test. An Ignatian scholarhip, valued at $1000, is awarded to students whose scores place them in the 98th percentile. Enrollment

Welcome from the

athletic director One of the missions of co-curricular school activities is to serve as an extension of the classroom. There are strong lessons to be learned in athletics. Lessons include setting and maintaining high standards of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in our schools and our society. It is up to us to provide the direction and constant vigilance under which good sportsmanship can prosper and have a positive impact on our children, the leaders of tomorrow. We feel the need to stress the type of exemplary behavior that should be exhibited by all coaches, players and spectators at our events. The value of the lessons learned by exhibiting good sportsmanship will last a lifetime. If we ever lose sight of that, then athletics is not worth sponsoring. The positive actions of a coach, athlete or spectator at an event can influence how our school is perceived in our own community and the communities of those schools we meet on the field of play. Sportsmanship, quite simply, translates to citizenship for our young men and women and all those involved with the interscholastic program. Through our programs young people learn and practice RESPECT ‌ respect for self and respect for others. We are asking for your support in this effort by emphasizing to your son what is expected of them at an athletic event as a competitor or spectator. After all, such events are an extension of the school day, and we should expect the same type of respectful behavior exhibited in the athletic arena as we do in the classroom. We urge you to ask your children to demonstrate self-control and self-discipline and at the same time, enjoy the games. Finally, we ask you to set a good example when in the stands at an event. It is only through these efforts that we can clearly communicate what is acceptable behavior. We hope that your positive example will help set the tone for those around you so we may all enjoy the games our athletic teams are involved in. Sportsmanship starts with you! When you purchase a ticket to an athletic event, you are given the privilege to view the action and to voice your support of our teams. We want that support to be in a positive tone. Simply put; let the coaches coach, the players play and the officials officiate. While in the stands tonight, cheer for the Hawklets and make us proud! We look forward to serving you this year and appreciate your continued support of Rockhurst athletics.

Thanks!

state championships While it might not come as too much of a shock to think that Rockhurst has been successful in athletics, Title Town is probably one of the best phrases when you start looking at the number of top 3 finishes at the state tournament. This is even more impressive in that Rockhurst didn't participate in state championships in several sports until the 1970s. Last year was another strong showing where 3 progroms finished second in state and one finished third.

ROCKHURST

HALL OF FAME

The Rockhurst High School “Sports Hall of Fame” honors alumni, coaches, and friends who have had a major impact of the school’s athletic tradition. Given The Rock’s storied heritage of sporting excellence in the Midwest, selection to the Sports Hall means recognition among the “best of the best” in Midwestern athletic history. The Sports Hall was established in 1991 by legendary coach and athletic director, Al Davis, Jr., along with his devoted student and friend, Mike Lillis ’56. Since the Charter Class of five men was inducted, the Sports Hall has grown to 85 members, including one of the largest classes to ever be inducted this year. Honorees are determined by a Selection Committee that carefully reviews nominations by Alumni Class Captains, as well as recommendations from the public at large, before submitting a slate to Rev. Terrence Baum, SJ, president of Rockhurst High School, for his blessing. Formal induction ceremonies occur each year during the Alumni Reunion Weekend.

Travis Huenfeld `91

Michael Chonko of Rockhurst High School’s great Class of 1988 was a head above most players on the soccer field, in more ways than one. A towering defender, Michael rarely allowed opposing forwards to even have the opportunity to score. In his two years as a starter, Michael held a combined record of 42-5-2. The defense gave up just 17 goals in 1986 and only 15 in 1987, including 20 shutouts that season. He led Rockhurst to a 3rd Place finish at State in ‘87, which made The Rock the first Kansas City school to make it to the Final Four. Both years, Michael won AllDistrict, All-Metro and All-State honors. He also took his height and talent to the basketball court as a two-year letterman, where he helped Rockhurst win the 1987 State Championship. His All-District senior season on the court, Michael averaged over 11 points per game and was described as a “dominating force on the boards.”

Travis Huenfeld of the great Class of 1991 brought speed and power to the football field and baseball diamond. He was part of the 2nd place 1989 squad that beat Jefferson City in four overtimes in the playoffs, which is still noted as the greatest game in Rockhurst football history. His senior season, Travis rushed for 1,362 yards and 17 touchdowns in just 10 games. Those numbers earned his All-District, Metro and State honors. Travis also helped reintroduce baseball to The Rock, which returned as a varsity sport after more than 20 years in 1989. He played Varsity for three years, and the team improved its record each spring, ultimately reaching 13-4 and a District Championships his junior and senior seasons. Travis was an All-District, All-Metro and All-State selections his final two seasons, and was named the Gatorade Circle of Champions Missouri Player of the Year in 1991.

Matthew Krull `94

Matt Roney `93

Matt Krull of the great Class of 1994 headed a hardnosed Hawklet football defense that was known throughout the Midwest. A two-year starter at linebacker, Matt seemed to know exactly where the ball was going. His junior year, he anchored a defense that allowed opposing teams under 70 yards and just 6.3 points per game, including five shutouts. Matt broke the school tackling record in 1992, only to re-break it his senior year with 160 tackles - over 13 per game. In his final two seasons, the Hawklets boasted a record of 18-5. Matt was named All-District twice and All-Metro and All-State his senior season. Matt also brought his power to the baseball diamond, where he was a three-year letterman. He hit for a whopping .417 average his junior year, helping The Rock win the Sectional Championship.

Matt Roney of the great Class of 1993 upstaged his older brother Bert as the best golfer in Rockhurst history. As a freshman, Matt played his way into the number two spot on the team, right behind Bert, a junior at the time. Matt’s sophomore season, he led the Hawklets to their 4th State Championship in program history and placed 3rd individually. Junior year included another State qualification. Senior year, Matt ended his Rockhurst career in a way that only one Hawklet golfer had done before. Although the team missed a State Championship by one stroke, Matt outlasted his competition and won the individual championship by five strokes. He was just the second golfer in school history to win an individual title. During his Rockhurst career, Matt earned All-District honors all four years and was both All-Metro and All-State three years.

Timothy “Ryan” Smith `96

Ryan Smith of the great Class of 1996 was a four-year tennis star that excelled in both singles and doubles, earning trips to State in both. Starting with his freshman season, Ryan solidified himself as a player with a bright future, qualifying for the State competition in singles. Sophomore year, his teamwork helped bring home a 2nd place finish in doubles, alongside partner Matt Bail.

He then earned a 3rd place finish in singles as a junior. Finally, as a senior, Ryan led the team to its first State Championship team since 1983, which started a run of 11 consecutive team titles for the Hawklets. His senior campaign included a perfect team record, and a 2nd place singles finish at the State Championship.

beyond athletics... college counseling As a college preparatory high school, Rockhurst is committed to helping students discover collegiate opportunities and programs that meet one’s academic, spiritual and social needs. Each student who graduates from RHS has the ability to succeed in a college or university setting. The academic foundation instilled by our faculty is the greatest bridge afforded to our students as they make the transition into collegiate studies. Thanks to the context in which our students learn - both in the classroom and through co-curricular activities - each graduate is able to embrace new settings, relationships and disciplines through a myriad of lenses. The philosophy of the College Counseling Office is to understand and serve the specific needs of each student while enabling him to find a suitable and satisfactory match for his college experience. Through comprehensive programming, which introduces students to the world of college early in their Rockhurst experience, our students receive personal interaction and education opportunities throughout the year. Ownership of the college selection process belongs to each of the students, while we gladly assist with their exploration, application and matriculation. With over 3,200 colleges and universities in the United States, there is a suitable place for each and every graduate. RHS students attend colleges all across the national with the largest percentage concentrated in the Midwest. 23% of our 2016 graduates will attend a Jesuit college or university this fall.

cross country Squad celebrates second in state but hungry for more in 2016 The 2015 cross country season finished with lots of hugs and smiles as the team finished second in the state. While this is one place off of its ultimate goal, the journey which that group took ended up in a team achieving its goal. “To some degree, everyone knew how good Lafayette was last year. They were nationally ranked, motivated and well coached. We approached the meet that we wanted to be the next team on the podium as you never knows what would happen. There were about 4 other schools who on any given day, could have beaten us but we found a way to have one of the best races of the year

24

at state,” Mr. Michael Dierks, head coach said. Starting the season, the Hawklets were rarely mentioned as a trophy contender. They returned only a handful of top seven returnees with state experience. But many people didn’t recognize the depth in the program. “We have been tremendously fortunate to not only have a really solid varsity team but I would have to say some of the secret of our success is that we train up to 16 guys in our A training group to build depth. Our second seven are varsitycaliber runners and for many of them they are waiting their turn to wear the white singlet,” Coach Dierks added. The team was led by a graduates Sam Wilkerson and Gray Ryan, who took their three years of varsity experience. They also had

graduate Will Bresette establish himself as a very reliable fifth man.In their own styles these seniors, and others, kept a collective group of different personalities, together on long runs. They distracted some from the pain with their humor. They united all with their goal. Each year, members travel to Colorado, to do some training in the Rocky Mountains and to do some team bonding. In July, 2015, they sat outside a cabin and set their goal second in state. Up front, senior John Luder took the most logical progression of becoming another Hawklet front runner. After years of watching standout William Thompson `15, Luder had a stellar season highlighted with a individual district championship and a top 10 finish at state. “John is a work horse. He isn’t afraid to put in mileage and more

importantly, he isn’t afraid to train on his own. He is very competitive and that is an important trait for a front runner,” Coach Dierks said. Luder’s fellow classmate, senior Danny Toomey, probably surprised many people as he wasn’t on many radars. In 2014, Toomey was the 10th runner and by the end of the 2015, his tough-styled running and super-competitive training, has catapulted him to second on the team and narrowly missing All-State status. For the second year in a row, the team won both dis-

tricts and sectionals and it was the ninth year in a row the team has qualified out of the very competitive Kansas City section. So now that it is time to start thinking about the 2016 season, many of the same comments were being shared - the Hawklets only return 3 of their top 7. They didn’t have a lot of runners break 10 in the 3200 in track…these are lots of comments that have been said before but the Hawklets still find ways to invite new faces to make great contributions. “I know we have Luder as a front guy and when Toomey gets healthy he will be valuable. But ultimately it will come down to our next three guys. How close can they get to racing with the front guys?” Coach Dierks said.

head coach michael dierks Entering his 22nd year at the school, Head Coach Michael Dierks relies upon his runners to be self-motivated and passionate. He recognizes that it is the internal drive which must motivate endurance athletes. In his 20 years as the head coach, the program has qualified for the state meet 10 years (including the past 9 in a row). They have also advanced past the district meet in all but 3 of his seasons. As a runner at the University of Notre Dame, Coach Dierks has brought a strong pack running philosophy to

the program. He is also in his fourth year as the school’s athletic director. Other duties that Coach Dierks has done for the Rock include: former Prep News adviser, journalism teacher, head track & field coach, director of alumni, database coordinator, spanish teacher.

Football’s tough schedule tests team, but falls in Districts Following up a season that included 12 wins and an appearance in the State Championship can be difficult. It is even more difficult when injuries are added to the equation. So was the season for the 2015 Rockhurst football team, which struggled to replicate the 2014 season that ended in a 2nd place finish at the State Championship. Injuries to impact seniors hampered the Hawklets’ ability to catch much momentum during the year, including setbacks to senior quarterback Tyler Benninghoff and senior slot receiver and

44

cornerback Jake Fetters. The season, though, started out on a high note. Rockhurst played Columbia Rock Bridge on Faurot Field at the University of Missouri. The Hawklets left the collegiate stadium with a 26-7 win and 1-0 record. “Having the chance to play at Mizzou was a really great experience,” said senior receiver Austin Wike. “Most of us won’t go on to play college ball, so having the opportunity to play in a stadium like that is something I won’t forget.” However, the Hawklets are hoping to play in another collegiate stadium for the final game of the 2016 season. The State Championship has been moved from the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, where the cham-

pionship games have been played since 1996. This season it will be played at Plaster Stadium on the Missouri State University campus. Following the opening victory over Rock Bridge, the Hawklets faced an extremely difficult stretch of games. Rockhurst traveled to Webb City to play the Class 4 powerhouse, which resulted in a 20-49 loss. Next were back-to-back weeks against big-name Arkansas schools, Bentonville and Springdale Har-Ber. Both ended in losses. Then the team put up a strong fight but fell to eventual State Champions, Blue Springs South. The Hawklets sat at 1-4. As is historical with head coach Mr. Tony Severino’s teams, Rockhurst showed resilience even when after the poor start. With three straight wins over Blue Springs, Columbia Hickman, and

Helias, the Hawklets were back to a .500 record, and some energy back on their side. Unfortunately, it was a season of runs, and Rockhurst lost its final two games, including a District knockout at the hands of RaymorePeculiar. One thing that cannot be overlooked from the 2015 season was the performance of senior AJ Taylor, a fouryear standout. The running back, receiver, kick returner,

and defensive back was electrifying every week. In just 10 games he rushed for 1,721 yards and 16 touchdowns, and added 19 receptions for 338 yards and 5 touchdowns. His performance earned him AllAmerican status. Following his more than 5,000 career all-purpose yards at Rockhurst, Taylor is continuing his playing days at the University of Wisconsin. “AJ is just one of those players that everyone wants to root for,” Coach Severino said. “He’s worked extremely hard for all his accomplishments, and I can’t wait to see what he is able to do in the future.”

head coach tony severino Coach Severino is entering his 34th season as head football coach. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he earned eight varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball. Receiving an athletic scholarship to Kansas State University, he completed his undergraduate while playing football there and later earned his Master’s at University of Kansas. He is married (Marylin), with three sons - all Rockhurst High graduates. Coach Sev is the head of the

Physical Education department and teaches Physical Fitness and Lifetime Sports, a student favorite. He feels that Rockhurst athletic histories impact the school’s traditions because of the pride everyone feels when they are successful; they never want to let down those who preceded them.

Edward F. Bukaty Award

The Edward F. Bukaty Award was given to Rockhurst by Alex George, Sr., in memory of Edward Bukaty. Mr. Bukaty was an avid supporter of Rockhurst. He suffered a heart attack and died while watching his son Joe play in the 1952 Lillis/Rockhurst football game. Every season since the Bukaty Award was established, a senior is selected by the football coaches and players as the recipient of this prestigious honor. The criteria, set by Mr. Alex George and former head football coach Mr. Al Davis, is to honor the individual player displaying the greatest leadership both on and off the field. The award criteria also state that the individual should lead by example and should have the respect of both players and coaches. Since that time, 61 young men, including Joe Bukaty, have been selected for this special honor.

ROCKHURST ALL SPORTS PROGRAM 2016-17

81

soccer Another Final Four appearance, program continues to seek Magis Consistency on both sides of the ball leads to banners on the wall. And the Rockhurst gymnasiums are covered with soccer banners from the last three decades. The 2015 Hawklets soccer team was able to hang another one following a 3rd place finish at the State Championship last fall - a good season, but not the perfect one.. The Rock worked its way to a 21-7-2 record and a fourth consecutive Final Four appearance. Along with a prolific offense led by senior AllAmerican midfielder Keaton Schieffer and senior All-State forward Cole McLagan, the Hawklet defense was

82

a handful to score against. Rockhurst allowed less than one goal per game, just 22 in the team’s 30 matches. In addition to only giving up more than two goals in two games, the defense also notched 15 shutouts. Other highlights from the season were winning both the Jesuit Classic and Top Dawg Tournament. The Jesuit Classic is the annual tournament between four Jesuit schools throughout the country, in which the team take turns hosting. In 2015 it was held at Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, WI. The Hawklets defeated both Marquette and Regis Jesuit High School, shutting out both teams. This year’s Jesuit Classic will held at Regis in Aurora, CO and the Hawklets will face Marquette and Gonzaga College High School from Washington, DC.

The Blue Valley Northwest Top Dawg Tournament included several local teams. Despite losing its first game of the tournament to the host school, Rockhurst bounced back to win the next two games, shutting out both Aquinas 4-0 and Blue Valley West 2-0. This year’s team will rely on contributions from every offensive player to help make up for the loss of prolific goal scorers Schieffer, McLagan, and senior John Mullen. “We promote a balanced attack on offense. We set realistic team goals recognizing we lost so much offense to graduation that no one or two players feel the need to carry the team or replace all of the goal and assist production we graduated,” said head coach Mr. Chris Lawson. “We believe it is possible and realistic for seven or eight of our attackers, mids and backs to score seven goals each and to create offen-

sive opportunities from the run of play and re-starts.” According to returning players on this year’s team, better than just a 3rd place banner is the expectation. “Last year was a season that we should have finished a lot better then we did; the players and coaches all know that,” said junior forward Navardo Bailey. “A lot of players currently on this year’s team know that feeling of playing that third place game and we don’t want to have that feeling again.” Following back-to-back

appearances in the 3rd place game at State, the Hawklets are prepared to take the next step and return to the Championship game, which they won in 2013 – and four times in the last decade. Others outside of the program think highly of this year’s squad as well. USA Today’s pre-season national rankings had Rockhurst as the #6 team in the country going into the 2016 season. “From some of us being part the 2013 State Championship team, we believe we know what it takes to win a State Title. We also know how bad it stings to get the Final Four and not reach our goal,” said junior defender Matthew Smith. “We want to end our seasin to end on that high note.”

head coach Chris Lawson A three-sport athlete at Sacred Heart High in Sedalia, Coach Lawson decided to focus on soccer after high school. He went on to play goalie at State Fair Community College and Park University. Now in his 22nd year heading Rockhurst soccer and 20th as a Social Studies teacher, he has two sons - Mel (class of ‘09) and Owen, (class of 2020). One of his favorite coaching memories was seeing Owen dog pile with the players after winning the ‘07 and ‘08

state titles. He believes that very few schools have attained the type of traditions that Rockhurst has and holds in academics, co-curriculars and spiritual retreats consistently on a state or national level. Coach Lawson teachers Senior American Government and is the Social Studies department chairperson.

soccer all-time team

While our soccer program has been quite successful since its days beginning in the winter, the All Time Team is a recent addition to recognize individual players who were hallmark players and instrumental to the success of the program in their eras. Submission for membership to the squad can be submitted to the Athletic Director or head coach, with credentials as to why their high school soccer career warrants consideration. The player must be five years out from graduation. Congratulations to these important players and thanks for your talents, toughness, tactical skill, and much more. ROCKHURST ALL SPORTS PROGRAM 2016-17

105

swim & dive While title run ends after 11 years, team looks to start new one All streaks come to an end. After 11 consecutive swimming and diving State Championships, the Rockhurst dynasty has been laid to rest - at least for one year. “The streak” began in 2005 and continued through the 2014 season. If those numbers do not add up, it is because Rockhurst won two swim and dive State Championships in 2006. That was the year it switched from a winter sport to a fall sport. So the Aquahawks won in March of 2006 as a winter sport, and then won again in November as a fall sport. The 11 straight ti-

106

tles in one sport is a school record, which surpassed the tennis team’s ten consecutive streak that lasted from 1996-2005. All of the swim & dive program’s wins were under the direction of Mr. Paul Winkeler, who stepped down from the head coach position after the 2014 season. He remains at Rockhurst, now with a larger role within the Science department, of which he is the chair. So in 2015, the Aquahawks went under the new leadership of Mr. Bob Barth, who has an extensive background in the sport. He spent time in Indiana and Columbia, MO before finding his way to Kansas City in 2002. He spent 12 years coaching in the North Kansas City School District before joining Rockhurst. Coach Barth’s

only relationship to Rockhurst in 2015 was coaching, but for 2016-17 he has joined the staff as a member of the Social Studies department. Coach Barth has coached eight High School All-Americans and has had 18 swimmers go on to swim collegiately at the Division I level. In his first season with the Aquahawks, Coach Barth was challenged with the task of trying to replace an impressive graduating class from the year before. This included losing All-American diver Zach Cook and AllAmerican swimmers Alex Albracht, who was one of the best in program history and continued swimming at the University of Virginia. “Our kids gave great effort throughout the season and while it is always a challenge to step in after someone like Coach Winkeler, we are proud of the season. We had

to overcome some injuries and sickness that would have most likely brought us home with a trophy,” said Coach Barth. “But what sticks out in my mind is that our kids went over to Rock Bridge and shook their hands after they won,” The team relied on returning talent from 2014, such as All-American divers juniors David Knopke and Joey Pennington. Knopke was able to replicate his 2014 State performance and earn a 2nd place finish again in 2015.

Pennington added a 6th place finish. The Aquahawks also returned All-Americans Collin Nill and A.J. Iseman, who both won State Championships in individual events in 2014. However, they were unable to repeat in their events. Iseman placed 4th in the 100 yard butterfly and 5th in the 100 yard backstroke. The team had relays which came in 5th and 6th as well. Overall, the Aquahawks finished 5th at State. The 2016 Rockhurst swimmers and divers are excited to try and start a new State Championship streak beginning this season.

head coach Bob barth

Coach Barth begins his second season at the helm but also is a full-time social studies teacher now at Rockhurst. An accomplished swimmer in his own right, Coach Barth qualified for Junior Nationals in 1982 before continuing his career at the University of Missouri. There, he swam four years, served as Team Captain in 1986, and then became a graduate assistant coach while completing his Master’s Degree in Human Performance. From 1989-1995, Barth Coach Barth began his high school coaching career in Indiana but he eventually found his way to the Northland. He spent the next 12 years coaching in the North Kansas City School

District, and in 2011, was instrumental in creating Club North Swimming, which has continued to provide an outstanding competitive swimming experience for kids all over the Northland. In his 25 year career, Coach Barth has coached 8 High School All-Americans and had 18 swimmers go on to swim collegiately at Division I schools. He holds a BS in Education, a Master’s degree in Human Performance, and is an ASCA Level III coach. He has two children: Samuel & Suzanne

ROCKHURST ALL SPORTS PROGRAM 2016-17

121

basket ball Last season’s record motivates talented returnees to work hard Playing a tough schedule may lead to a less-thanimpressive record; but the end goal for the Rockhurst High School basketball team is not a good record – it’s a deep playoff run. Head coach Mr. Peter Campbell believes that plotting his team against the best competition in the city throughout the season will best prepare the Hawklets for a shot at a District and Sectional Championship. So the team’s 8-17 record heading into the postseason was not indicative of the team’s skill level. “We play a very difficult schedule in the KC area. Last year

122

we ran up against some of the best teams in the state of Missouri during our regular season, mostly from the Suburban Conference,” said Coach Campbell. “We benefitted from the rigorous regular season schedule, and it propelled us to a great firstround victory in Districts over Belton.” Unfortunately, thanks to a buzzer beater, Lee’s Summit West then brought the Hawklets’ season to a close in a 47-44 loss in the District Semifinals. But the season as a whole included many ups and downs. On Dec. 22, Rockhurst lost to Blue Springs by 19 points. Just seven days later, the two teams met again in the William Jewell Tournament and the Hawklets won by nine.

Likewise, Coach Campbell’s team beat rival Shawnee Mission East by a score of 70-67 in the Shawnee Mission Tournament early in the season. But when they played the rematch seven weeks later, Rockhurst only netted 49 points and lost by 11. The season also included an overtime loss to Shawnee Mission North and a double overtime loss to Columbia Rock Bridge. Looking forward to the 2016-17 season, Coach Campbell and his returning players are excited to turn some of those tough lategame losses into wins, and extend the season into lateMarch. “I’m extremely excited about this year’s squad. We have great senior leadership, athleticism at every position, and depth,” said Coach Campbell. “Our team had a great summer playing together

at the KU Team Camp, KAMO Tournament, and the Rockhurst Summer League. We learned a lot about each other, and started to trust each other on the floor.” Some of the returning leadership and athleticism includes juniors Scott Thompson, Chris Teahan, and Carter Selzer and sophomore Xavier Rhodes, the team’s leading scorer last season at 11.5 points per game. “I think the teach chem-

istry this year is really going to help us succeed,” said Rhodes. “We have to be able to go out and compete every play of every game, even when things aren’t going our way.” The Hawklets will also look for production from freshmen Darrius Hughes and Ahmad Louis, who contributed during their first seasons in the program. “While we have a tough road ahead, I think this group of players has the skill, desire, and attitude to help us continue what we started toward the end of last season,” said Coach Campbell.

head coach pete campbell Coach Campbell begins his fourth year as head coach after 18 years as an assistant. A Rockhurst grad (class of `89), he helped bring home a basketball state title in 1989; a feat made possible in part due to his game winning shot to make it out of the quarterfinals, and also in 2013 when he was the varsity assistant coach for the state championship team. He went on to get his BA from Mizzou and MA at Baker. He is married with three kids:

Catelyn (15), and twins Emma and Will (8). Coach Campbell served as the athletic director for 6 years but has recently returned to the classroom and will teach freshman math. Without coaching or teaching, Coach Campbell says he would be broke - he can’t do anything else.

Wrestling Hawklets win three individual state championships The 2015-16 Rockhurst High School wrestling team did not technically have its best team finish in program history, but most would argue that. In 2011, the Hawklets finished 6th place The 201516 Rockhurst High School wrestling team did not technically have its best team finish in program history, but most would argue that. In 2011, the Hawklets placed 6th at State with 65 points. Last season, they scored 80 points, placing 7th. But almost all of those points came from Hawklets who were standing on top of their weight class’ p o d i u m

once the State Championship Tournament was over. Three Rockhurst wrestlers won individual titles – just the second, third, and fourth in school history. The other was Drew Daniels in 2013. The champions were senior Vince Spalitto, and juniors Cameron Valdiviez and Colin Valdiviez. In addition, senior Carson Meek battled through an ankle injury to place 8th in 132-pound. “Last year’s State Tournament performance was very fulfilling and exciting for our entire team,” said head coach Mr. Armand Aaron. “We want our kids to feel like they belong in the championships, and last year’s performance showed all of them that they can wrestle for Rockhurst and make it to the top of the medal stand.”

Spalitto, who signed to continue wrestling at the University of Oklahoma, completed the rare feat of winning the State competition in his first time qualifying. He did so in the heavyweight division of 285-pounds. The Valdiviez twins, on the other hand, already both had two years of State experience going into the tournament junior year. Freshman year, Cameron won 3rd place in 106-pound and Colin fell in the semifinals of 113-pound; sophomore year, Cameron earned 6th place in 120-pound and Colin took 4th in 113-pound. Both went undefeated as juniors. “My first two years of state helped me gain the experience I needed to ultimately succeed. My goal going in every year is to perform my best, knowing the results will reflect the work I have put in,” Cameron said.

“This year, I was at the right weight, in the right frame of mind, and ready to show everyone what I was capable of. I think I did just that. “ Over the summer, Colin was selected to represent the U.S. in the Cadet Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. He won his weight class in both Greco and Freestyle events. “Representing my country for the first time at the Pan Am Games in Peru was an absolute honor. I was thrilled to get the results I did with two gold medals. It could not

have gone better and I hope to have the same opportunities in the future,” Colin said. Despite their undefeated records as juniors, the brothers still believe they have more to show as seniors. “Last season I had some close matches, some which I only won by a single point. This year I hope to set myself apart from all of my opponents by winning all of my matches in dominant fashion,” said Cameron. Coach Aaron knows that the brothers will see each opponent’s best efforts every time they take the mat. “They’ve gotten better and are prepared to have great seasons again, but they also have a target on them and they recognize that people will be gunning for them,” said Coach Aaron.

head coach armand aaron Coach Aaron is entering his third year at Rockhurst and his 38th as a teacher and coach. The bulk of his career was with Christian Brothers schools in St Louis and Memphis, where his wrestling teams enjoyed considerable success. He attended Bishop Carroll High School in Wichita, KS and was named the scholar-athlete of his senior class. Coach has a bachelors degree in history, a masters in education, and teaches Junior Theology at Rockhurst.

He enjoyed his first year in the classroom and on the mats at Rockhurst, and looks forward to an exciting and improved wrestling team this year. He and his spouse Roxanne have a daughter and son who they happily describe as “successfully launched”. In his free time, he enjoys hitting the links.

Base ball

ROCKHURST ALL SPORTS PROGRAM 2016-17

143

base ball Seniors lead team to strong season, but falter in districts Baseball is absolutely a team sport. However, unlike in some other team sports, baseball can have one player control a game - but he can only do so about once a week. In basketball and football, the point guard and quarterback are going to play every single game. In baseball, a team’s best pitcher can only throw so often. This usually means that teams schedule their best pitcher to take the mound in the biggest games. So was the case for Rockhurst in the District Championship, where they faced Lee’s Summit West. The Hawklets, a team that averaged nearly 6 runs per

144

game throughout the season and were never shut out, managed to scrape just one run across the plate in the elimination game. The Hawklets fell to the Titans by a score of 3-1, and ended their season with a 22-10 mark. “It’s always tough when the season ends without reaching the ultimate destination,” said head coach Mr. Jim DeGraw. “It comes down to which is the better team that day. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get our offense going in the District Championship.” Highlights from the season included beating teams from Arkansas, Nebraska, and Wisconsin and going on a 10-1 stretch at one point during the season. The 2016 Rockhurst base-

ball team was a seniorheavy squad. Eleven of the 19 players on the varsity roster graduated after the season. Those players usually fielded seven of the nine starting spots, and seniors accounted for 73% of the team’s RBI production. Of the 11 seniors, seven of them went on to continue playing baseball at the next level. Among them was Tyler Benninghoff, who signed with the Minnesota Twins after being selected in the 11th round of the MLB draft. Unfortunately for Benninghoff and the Hawklets, he dealt with a biceps injury throughout his senior season. As a junior he pitched to a 5-1 record with a 1.25 ERA, but as a senior could only throw 1.2 innings, coming in the District Championship loss. Despite the injury, Benninghoff was a surehanded shortstop, committing just one error

on the season. He earned Honorable Mention All-State Honors. Also garnering post-season recognition was senior infielder and pitcher Dalton Lanpher, who was named Honorable Mention All-State and 1st Team All-Metro. Lanpher led the team in batting average (.417), hits (43) and RBIs (31). “Losing key players such as Dalton Lanpher, Tyler Benninghoff, and Jon Wemhoff is always tough,” said junior Max Hewlett, one of the

team’s top returners. “We lose that chemistry we had as underclassmen and will have to work to regain that. But I think we have some great players in our class and we’ll be able to reproduce this year.” Coach DeGraw seems to agree. “The forecast for the 2017 Rockhurst baseball team is exciting,” said Coach DeGraw. “With eight returning lettermen and a challenging schedule, we have high expectations. I’m looking forward to new players stepping up and filling the gaps left by last year’s seniors.”

head coach jim degraw In the spring of 2017 Jim DeGraw will begin his 212nd season as the head baseball coach at Rockhurst High School. He has led Rockhurst to its only two state final four appearances in 2004 (state runner-up) and 2010 (third place) and an overall record of 349 wins and 176 losses. DeGraw has coached 27 players who have gone to play Division I baseball and five who have played professionally including former first team high school All-American and current major leaguer John Mayberry, Jr. (Mets). There have been 26 all-state players that have played under Coach DeGraw. Rockhurst has been ranked as the number one team in the state of Missouri during the

course of five different seasons during his tenure and is a regular in the state’s top ten rankings during the spring. Since baseball returned to Rockhurst in 1989, teams have won 12 district titles. Under DeGraw, Rockhurst has made the national rankings as well, appearing in the USA Today Top 25 (#24), Baseball America Top 25 poll (#21) and the Midlands Region Top 5 (#2) in 2004.

baseball all-time team With several Major League Baseball players in the program’s history it wasn’t too hard to begin an All-Time team for baseball (in 2009). The gap between 1960s and the late 1980s is because there was no program sponsored by the high school. golf Golf team peaks at State Championships, despite weather Prior to the two-day State Championship Tournament, members of the Rockhurst golf team described their season as “underwhelming.” They were consistently finishing second, third and fourth in tournaments they thought they should have been winning. Those two days at State, though, changed the outlook of the whole season, as the team peaked at exactly the right time. “We knew how good of a team we had, but we just never seemed to click and play the way we knew how,” said junior

152

Rob Enright. “But we managed to stay motivated, as all of us have been playing golf for years, and knew it only took two good rounds to turn things around.” In a very rainy first day, the Hawklets played well, but not great. They shot a team score of 322 and were tied for third. But on day two, everything came together. Rockhurst shot the lowest score of any team, a 311, and climbed easily into 2nd place for the tournament, finishing behind a strong Glendale High School team. The Hawklets’ mental toughness is what made them successful despite the conditions, and ensured that it would be the fifteenth consecutive year that a Rock-

hurst golf team has finished in the top three at the State Tournament. “I was really proud of how they played at State, especially in the rain,” said head coach Mr. Paul Beirne. “They didn’t get down after the first day; they used it as motivation and were really excited to get back out on day two and prove that they are a top team in Missouri.” This year’s State Runner-Up team consisted of Enright, senior Aaron Lang, junior Ethan Packel, sophomore Jacob Propeck, and senior Louie Tumminia. Another reason for the program’s success is its depth and challenging schedule. The Hawklets had 8 deep that could have been in their top 5. They also travelled through Missouri and also to California so that they could

ing three of the team’s top four finishers from State, they are excited about the prospect of moving another spot up on the leaderboard. be tested as much as possible. Playing in tough tournaments and dealing with travel only help them when they get down to state. Enright was the team’s most consistent player. He was the top performer at Sectionals and State, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. He also finished fourth at Districts, while the Hawklets were led by Propeck, who finished second. With the Hawklets return-

“This upcoming season is looking very bright for the golf team. We have two really solid returning seniors, and a junior that will help us out immensely,” said Enright. “I’m very excited for my final year with a chance to bring back the trophy to Rockhurst. I have nothing but good feelings about the turnout for this year.” For the 2017 season, the Rockhurst golf program will welcome back head coach Mr. Mark Nusbaum.

head coach mark nusbaum Coach Mark Nusbaum is back! As a former Hall of Fame basketball coach for the Hawklets, he retired from teaching in 2015. He says that he missed the kids and many former players (golfers and basketball players) know what he brings to the table in terms of attitude and effort. Coach Nusbaum was a four-sport, nine lettermen at Marshalltown High School, IA. He taught and coached locally at O’Hara and Liberty before coming to the Rock and teaching mathematics.

While he didn’t play golf in high school he has plenty of experience in managing the game, both the mental side and the team dynamics. He also sports a nine handicap. Coach Nusbaum is a sales rep for a medical testing company. He and his wife, Kris, have two sons (Drew and Jameson) and one daughter (Carly).

Overtime loss in playoffs bursts bubble but motivates returnees A perfect league regular season is great, but it was not the ultimate goal for the 2016 Rockhurst lacrosse team. The Hawklets finished the Lacrosse Association of Kansas City (LAKC) regular season with a clean 12-0 record, beating every team in the league. However, the squad’s season ended on a heartbreaking overtime loss to Blue Valley West in the semifinals of the league tournament. It was redemption for the Jaguars, who lost to Rockhurst in overtime earlier in the season. Along with both overtime thrillers, the

162

Hawklets played numerous tough games against tough opponents – several from out of state. The schedule included teams from Mississippi, Illinois, two from Louisiana and Oklahoma, and three from St. Louis. Although Rockhurst went 2-7 in these games, all of the losses were within reach. “Traditionally, I follow the mantra that in order to be the best, you have to play the best. So we always try to load our schedule with the best possible competition in order to better prepare to make a deep run in the league,” said head coach Mr. Tim Reidy. “This year will be no different with a midseason trip to Atlanta and a trip to St. Louis to play DeSmet and St. Louis University High.”

Much of the 2017 Hawklet team will be familiar faces, all with an extra year of experience to their names. The team will bring back 23 of the 34 varsity players. This group accounts for 71% of the goals scored last season, including the top three point scorers (number of goals and assists combined). They are sophomore Brady Guck (66), junior Harrison Donnelly (59), and junior Reed Slaymaker (49). Three of the four Hawklets who were named to the LAKC All-Metro Teams were underclassmen. They were Slaymaker (2nd Team Midfielder), junior Jake Sullivan (2nd Team Defense), and Donnelly (Honorable Mention Attack). The other Hawklet who was named to the 1st Team Defense was senior Jake Enenbach. More notable returnees include juniors Matt Schrader, Robert

Dakan, Sam Mohajir, and Nathan Allison, all of whom had more than 20 points last season. Coach Reidy is excited about the return of these players, and many more lettermen, and looks to bring the LAKC Championship back to Rockhurst. “This year’s seniors are a very talented group that’s focused and driven to return the program to the top of KC Lacrosse. We are deep, athletic, and talented,” said Coach Reidy. “With a new

offensive and defensive style, this year’s team will be an exciting brand of lacrosse to watch.” The players set to return in the spring also agree. “I think the loss fueled everyone to put in a lot of offseason work, which I think will make us more prepared than ever and ready to make up for what we couldn’t do last year,” said Slaymaker. “Since most of the team is returning and most of us have played together for several years, we can expect more goals, more wins, and hopefully a championship because of the chemistry we have going into 2017.”

head coach tim reidy Back at the Rock, Coach Tim Reidy continues working at his alma mater (Class of 2002) after teaching and coaching on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and at Tulsa. Coach Reidy holds a BA in History and American Studies from the University of Kansas and an MeD from the University of Notre Dame. He is teaching in the Social Studies department. He and his wife, Heather, have twin boys (Ryan and Padraig) and a daughter, Frances Grace. In addition to running the

lacrosse program, Coach Reidy is a freshman football coach. As a Hawklet, Coach Reidy was the first All-American in school history. He went on to play in college. Off the field, Coach Reidy was on the school newspaper and currently helps the school as its school archivist.

tennis Hawklets place 2nd at State, rivalry continues with Bruins For the last decade, the Missouri Class 2 (large class) tennis world has been dominated by “Rocks.” Since 2007, either Rockhurst or Columbia Rock Bridge has won the team State Championship. The 2016 title match pitted the two teams against each other. The school to the east came out on top by a score of 5-2, as the Hawklets’ were unable to win a fourth straight championship. The two teams have each won five titles in the last ten years. “This was another great year for

172

Rockhurst tennis, and I’m lucky to have been able to be a part of it,” said head coach Mr. Zach Frisch. “We came up just short to a really strong Rock Bridge team, but this season was still special. It was a fun group of guys who knew how to compete.” The Hawklets, although disappointed by the loss, were overall pleased with the season as a whole. The team finished with a 12-2 head-tohead record, with one loss to Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School, which won the Class 1 State Championship. The other loss was to Rock Bridge in the finals. “Although we finished second and lost our streak of titles, I could not have been more proud to be a part of

this team,” said sophomore Collin Klumb. “This team was really close off the court as well. We all became great friends and were able to share the experience of improving and earning a second place together.” Klumb and his doubles partner, senior Justin Nogalski were able to fulfill their individual goal, though. The duo won the doubles State Championship. They cruised to the title game after not losing a single set in their first three playoff matches. They lost a set in the finals, but won the other two to take first place. For the Hawklets’ regular season, notable wins included victories over Pembroke Hill, Blue Valley Northwest, who won the Kansas 6A State Championship, and going 5-0 in all three District and

Sectional matches. Rockhurst will lose four seniors who were key contributors on the State runner-up team. They are Nogalski, Henry Voysey, Sinjin Nair, and Harrison Kotre. Voysey and Nair were the top two singles players and represented the Hawklets in the State Tournament. Voysey ended his season with a 13-3 record and Nair had a 17-5 record.

The 2017 tennis Hawklets are hopeful to get another shot against Rock Bridge, which returns every player from its 2016 championship team. “The rivalry with Rock Bridge has been long-running. In order to get back on top, our team is going to have to put in a lot of work,” said Klumb. “Rock Bridge has a lot of talented underclassman that are filled with energy. I think we definitely have the ability to beat them through hard work, discipline and more experience through our upperclassmen.”

ROCKHURST ALL SPORTS PROGRAM 2016-17

181

track & field Track team wins first Sectional Championship since the ‘70s The Rockhurst track and field team, led by a strong senior class, won its first Sectional championship since the 1970s. The relay races have been a staple of the program for the last several years, including back-to-back-toback 4x100m titles in 2014 and 2015, and the 4x800m title in 2013. The 2016 season was no different. “We really pride ourselves on the relays and the belief in all four guys adding equal parts,” said head coach Mr. Michael Day. “We usually don’t have the one guy who can

182

dominate a race, so all four have to contribute for us to be successful.”

As expected, the competition at State was fierce, but several Hawklets stepped up to the challenge.

Despite a slow start to the season, the Hawklets turned it around for the postseason, winning both Districts and Sectionals. Highlights from the Sectional victory included junior John Luder winning the 1600m with a time of 4:22 and also qualifying in the 3200m, junior Danny Toomey and senior Adam Palausky finishing 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the 800m, and senior Patrick Bowen qualifying for State in both the and 400m, as well as his two relays.

The first day of the twoday meet started off great. The 4x800m team, which had come into the race as the last seed (16th), surprised many by racing to a 6th place finish. That was good enough for All-State honors. Seniors Sam Wilkerson and Palausky led the team, and Toomey and newcomer to the program, junior Barret Zorn, added strong legs.

On top of the individual performances, all four of the relay teams finished in the top four at Sectionals and earned a trip to the State Championships.

Two other relays, the 4x100m and 4x200m, both ran fast enough preliminary times to qualify for Saturday’s finals. Then, due to weather, the final races of Friday had to be postponed. This meant that the 4x400m relay would not have

prelims and Luder had to run both the 1600m and 3200m on the same day – a daunting task. On Saturday morning, Luder ran a new personal best of 4:19.56 in the 1600m and finished 6th, barely missing the school record. However, there wasn’t enough gas in the tank a few hours later to run the kind of 3200m that he was hoping. The 4x100m team of junior Ross Elder and seniors Luke Koeppen, Austin Wike,

and AJ Taylor could not make it a three-peat in the event, but raced to a respectable a 6th place finish as well. Elder, Taylor, Wike and Bowen added a 4th place finish in the 4x200m. Bowen topped off the weekend with a 7th place All-State performance in the 400m and joining the elite club of middle distance runners who broke 49 seconds in the 400.. “Overall, we were really proud of our guys on their performances at State,” said Coach Day. “Next year is all about bringing up the next group of guys and turning those fifth and sixth place finishes into firsts and seconds.”

head coach michael day A former collegiate football and basketball player, Coach Day brings his knowldege, passion and athleticism to the track program. An RHS grad (`01) where he excelled in football, basketball and track, he went on to play football at K-State from 2001-02 and basketball at Rock U. from 200206. During his high school and collegiate careers he received several All-State and All-Conference honors. Coach Day will coach his seventh season in track,

and he is in charge of the sprint events. He coached the school’s 4X100 relay team to win its third straight state championship. Now a teacher in the math department, Coach Day was Rockhurst’s Scholar Athlete in the KC Star as a senior.
