A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT Last year, upon the conclusion of Easter Season in the Church, we had a series of plants and flowers that Pastoral Ministry offered to people at school to take and grow at home. I decided that a few of the flowers might look good in some pots just outside my office window. Fortunately, those David J. Laughlin I chose were types that President, Rockhurst High School were pretty hardy and low maintenance, so all summer and into this fall, I have had three beautiful pots of flowers outside my window. Earlier this fall, as I was walking a hallway toward the Barry Commons at school, a young man came riding toward me in a handicap three-wheeled scooter. Knowing he didn’t have a physical disability, I was also struck by the incredibly broad smile he had on his face as he drove the hallways. He was excited to let me know that he and his robotics teacher had found this scooter left for scrap and had re-engineered it to become functional. A couple of days later, the scooter came riding by on its own because, well, they had, of course, now added remote control capabilities. One early Saturday this fall, I had the chance to give my good wishes to our cross country team before a meet. I watched this large pack of boys run together as a group in their warmup. Then, I watched different segments, gathered around their tent, teams within the team, congregate, discuss strategy and show strong camaraderie prior to the races. I watched as varsity runners became quiet and very focused and I watched teammates cheering them on. In the end, one among them, Wes Porter, won the overall race and was a thing of grace to witness on the course. Although I’m sure he was pressing very hard as he ran, in comparison to all the runners I watched that day, he seemed to run effortlessly. It was something to watch.
This fall, I also had the opportunity to have breakfast with one of our seniors. I asked him how he came to Rockhurst and he told me his older sister had informed the family that this was the best thing for him. At first, he said, he wasn’t crazy about the idea at all. But now, a senior, he observed how grateful he was for his older sister’s care. At Rockhurst, he has led retreats, plays cello and was excited to join the drum corps this year. Having witnessed his playing classical music in the Rose Theater, I was happy to also see him with the drum corps at a football game recently. As you may know, this year’s school theme is Reconciliation. As a Jesuit school, we have invited our community to think of three aspects of this theme: Reconciliation with God; with human persons; with creation. The world is alive with the grandeur of God. When I see the potential in the mind of a student interested in robotics come to fruition, a flower continuously bloom, a runner inspiring and graceful, or a musician who can play a concert or a pep rally with equal enthusiasm, I witness God at work in creation. At Rockhurst, we need to be intentional to use our gifts and talents to build the Kingdom and reconcile where healing is needed in our world. I am fortunate to witness miracles like these and so many more every day. Our boys make us proud and God is their source. What may seem ordinary is actually quite visibly the gift of creation in action. Thank you for the many ways you help Rockhurst to live into its mission, which is the gift of the boys we are here to serve.
God bless,
David J. Laughlin President, Rockhurst High School

“
Van Dyke was a board member for Rockhurst High School from 2010-2019 and treasurer for the final two years of his service. He continues to consult with the school on a pro bono basis for all aspects of the institution’s financial well-being. “My parents believed that a strong foundation in your faith paved the way for a successful life,” Van Dyke reflected. “I and many members of my family have benefited directly from the gift of an outstanding Jesuit education. For me to be honored with this award by my fellow Rockhurst alumni is very humbling and gratifying.” Van Dyke is one of the top experts in audit and consulting services for businesses across the nation. He began his professional career with Ernst & Ernst in 1976, where he served until 1990 when it was known as Ernst & Young. Van Dyke was then a lead partner with McKittrick, Kopel & Van Dyke before it merged into Baird, Kurtz & Dobson (BKD) in 1995. He retired from BKD in 2015. There are times when we have all met someone who has a special devotion to important work. Jim Van Dyke has just that for Jesuit education and Rockhurst High School. He is a remarkable example of service to God, family, the overall community and our school.

LEADERSHIP VOLUNTEERS IMPACT MISSION Rockhurst High School’s devoted leadership volunteers make the school better and stronger, helping students and faculty to succeed with the tools to reach their God-given potential. Rockhurst’s alumni base is more than 9,300 strong. They live and work all over the world. Some are young and new, and some are older and seasoned. Some dedicate a few, significant hours, while others devote decades, leaving a legacy. Parents with sons enrolled at Rockhurst include more than 1,000 households. They offer countless hours in support of the mission. The parent-led annual Spectacular auction raises $1 million annually for tuition assistance. Volunteers are a cause for celebration at The Rock. “Our volunteers are essential to every aspect of Rockhurst High School’s character,” said David Laughlin, president. “The volunteer system is deep, and it connects virtually every aspect of our school to the community. Among their many contributions is that volunteers give a personal face to Rockhurst as role models who partner with the administration and faculty to give our students the best Jesuit education possible.”
A 12-member Executive Committee leads the Rockhurst High School National Alumni Association. Andrew Stafford ’93 is president of the Alumni Executive Committee, also in his first year of service. He took over from Joshua Brewster ’99, who concluded his presidency in early 2019 after serving six years on the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee represents alumni to further the educational, religious, literary and charitable interest of Rockhurst to strengthen the bonds among graduates and the school. “It is vital for alumni to appreciate that everyone plays a role in keeping Rockhurst High School a vibrant educational option in Kansas City,” said Stafford. “We need our alumni involved and showing their active support for the school’s mission.” The Parents’ Club, headed by Therese Smith, focuses on building relationships with the entire school community in support of students. The annual events they host generate school spirit and a welcoming feeling for every family as part of a quality Rockhurst experience. “These volunteers are a tremendous asset for us, and their amazing work makes a huge difference,” said Laughlin. “Whether through really important one-time opportunities or through longterm leadership commitments and lifelong engagement, they make Rockhurst an extraordinary place to be.”
The main volunteer leadership group is the Board of Trustees, which comprises 23 members. The chairman of the board is Mark Teahan ’78, who is beginning his first year in that role. He replaced Jonathan Haden ’75, who served a standard three-year term as chairman and recently concluded his overall service after 11 years. The board governs activities and affairs of the school in conjunction with the institution’s administration, led by Laughlin. Board members can serve up to nine years and are overseen by the Board of Members, who must be members of the Society of Jesus, according to the bylaws of the school, and are charged with maintaining the institution’s Jesuit identity.
Rockhurst’s Board of Trustees comprises local leaders in their communities, businesses and churches.

On Aug. 13, 2019, Head Football Coach Tony Severino announced to his players that he will retire from coaching following the 2019 season. Coach Severino has been an educator at Rockhurst since 1983 and has helped with the formation of thousands of young men both on and off the field. In his 42 years as a head football coach, he has notched 381 career wins. MILLER FAMILY FUNDS IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY CENTER AT ROCKHURST HIGH SCHOOL
The Bob Miller ’46 family celebrated Mass prior to the opening of the Ignatian Spirituality facilities on May 21, 2019.
The Ignatian Spirituality Center of Kansas City and Rockhurst High School strengthened their connection by opening a mutual office, conference room and private consultation spaces on the Greenlease Memorial campus at Rockhurst High School. Construction of the facilities was made possible by a $100,000 grant from the AMDG Foundation established by the Carol and Bob Miller family. A formal blessing of the spaces took place on May 21, 2019. “The Society of Jesus has invited Jesuit works to consider their metropolitan work as an apostolic platform where together we work to deepen the rich fruits of the Spiritual Exercises,” said David Laughlin, president of Rockhurst High School. This collaboration with the Ignatian Spirituality Center of Kansas City is a great example of such a vision and reflects one of the recently named Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society of Jesus: Discernment and the Spiritual Exercises. “Rockhurst High School and the Spirituality Center share a deeply felt desire to help people to understand themselves, Christ, and the world around them. We are profoundly grateful to the Miller family for making it possible for us to create a holy environment where faith can grow for the mission of Jesus Christ.” In the late 1980s, members of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) from Rockhurst University, St. Francis Xavier Parish and Rockhurst High School began providing opportunities for lay people to experience the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Over the next 10 years the number of people making the Spiritual Exercises increased, so much so that in August 2001 an “Ignatian Spirituality Program” was formally established by Rev. James G. Blumeyer, SJ.
The program grew into the Ignatian Spirituality Center serving the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. “Faith formation has always been a core value of our family,” said Sean Miller ’77, chairman of the AMDG Foundation and the Miller Group. “When the opportunity was presented to help these two Jesuit apostolates of the Catholic Church to offer even more invitations for people to deepen their relationship with God, we of course wanted to be a part of it. Their good works are truly devoted to God’s greater honor and glory.” Robert “Bob” Miller ’46 founded the company that bears his name and the values he held dear: “God, family, and community come first!” The Miller Group’s motto is “Miller Cares.” It is one of the largest and most successful insurance brokers in Kansas City, as well as offering a number of other client-based services across a broad spectrum of business fields. Although Bob Miller passed away in 2010, his spirit still animates his family. The AMDG Foundation keeps his Christ-centered way of living alive with grants to organizations devoted to the Catholic faith across the Midwest. “The Spiritual Exercises was life-changing for me,” said James M. Caccamo, Ph.D., executive director of the Ignatian Spirituality Center. “Our Ignatian formation is a gift from God; however, it is not one we should keep … we must give it away every single day for the betterment of God’s Kingdom here on Earth. Spirituality can be so foundational to living life to its fullest for God and everyone and everything around us. These new spaces give us a special place to share those beliefs as a faith community.”
ROCKHURST COMMUNITY MEMBERS CELEBRATE VOCATIONAL MILESTONES Several Jesuits in the Rockhurst High School family recently celebrated benchmarks within their vocations. This includes alumni and former presidents, teachers and Alum Service Corps (ASC) volunteers at Rockhurst. Two alumni are enjoying Jubilee years. Rev. Richard Comboy, SJ, ’56 is in his 50th year as a priest and Rev. Robert Hagan, SJ, is in his 60th year as a Jesuit.

Two former presidents are also celebrating Jubilee years; Rev. Thomas Cummings, SJ, is in his 50th year as a priest and Rev. John Hunthausen, SJ, is in his 60th year as a Jesuit. Rev. Matt Stewart, SJ, a teacher at Rockhurst from 2002-03, was ordained to the diaconate on Sept. 21, 2019, at the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola at Boston College. Nick Blair, SJ, an ASC member at Rockhurst from 2016-17, and River Simpson, SJ, who spent time at Rockhurst in 2018 as part of his Jesuit experience, pronounced their perpetual vows on Aug. 10, 2019, at the Novitiate of St. Stanislaus Kostka in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. Timothy Bishop, nSJ, a 2015 graduate of Rockhurst, entered his second year as a novice and Richard Joubert, nSJ, an ASC member at Rockhurst from 2015-16, joined the novitiate as a novice in August 2019.
FACULTY AND STAFF MEMBERS MAKE SPIRITUAL EXERCISES In partnership with the Ignatian Spirituality Center of Kansas City, Rockhurst High School offers the opportunity for faculty and staff to make the “Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life.” The Spiritual Exercises are a compilation of meditations, prayers and contemplative practices developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola to help people deepen their relationship with God. For centuries the Exercises were most commonly given as a “long retreat” of about 30 days in solitude and silence. In recent years, there has been a renewed emphasis on the Spiritual Exercises as a retreat accessible for laypeople. The most common way of going through the Exercises now is a “retreat in daily life,” which involves a monthslong program of daily prayer and regular meetings with a spiritual director.
During the 2018-19 school year, five members of Rockhurst’s faculty and staff made the Exercises, and four more are making the Exercises in 2019-20. “All members of the Rockhurst community share a responsibility for carrying out the Jesuit mission of the school,” said Richard Sullivan, Ignatian Identity Director at Rockhurst. “Engaging in faith formation, and more specifically the Spiritual Exercises, allows the faculty and staff to participate more fully in this mission.”

President’s Report 2018-19
PRESIDENT’S REPORT Rockhurst High School has many wonderful stories that distinguish it as an institution of achievement. Perhaps none is more impactful than our annual President’s Report, which lists donors who have offered charitable gifts during the past full fiscal year to support Jesuit education in Kansas City. Have you ever wondered what makes a school a special place to be? The answer is always the same: Schools become extraordinary because of the incredible students, faculty, parents, alumni and community partners who bring it to life each day, including our donors. The Rockhurst High School community is truly grateful for the resources benefactors offer so our students have the opportunity to do something significant for God’s greater honor and glory. The Honor Roll of Donors for Fiscal Year 2018-2019 includes a list of all benefactors to Rockhurst High School whose contributions
David Laughlin, Rockhurst High School president, interacts with students during activity period.
were received between July 1, 2018, and June 30, 2019. Every attempt has been made to present an accurate record. Please contact the Advancement Office with errors and accept our apologies. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam

A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Alumni and Friends of Rockhurst, Many great things are happening at Rockhurst these days! This school year’s theme was announced by President David Laughlin in July: Reconciliation. The faculty and staff prayed with this theme at their two in-service days in mid-August and experienced this theme through a bus tour called “The City You Never See” and Rev. Vincent Giacabazi, SJ a series of presentations by Operation Principal, Rockhurst High School Breakthrough. Our student body continues to experience this theme of Reconciliation with service and immersion projects throughout the school year, including upcoming trips to Guatemala and Mexico. After welcoming the Class of 2023 and their parents in mid-August through a Mass, a party and addresses by President Laughlin and me, the school year was launched with great success with 14 new, former-and-now-returning, or repositioned faculty and staff members and four new ASC volunteers, including Rockhurst’s first woman ASC educator in the 29 years of the program’s existence.
On August 28, Rockhurst’s newest Jesuit, the Rev. Gary Menard, SJ, presided and preached at the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit, with several concelebrating priests joining our community from the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph and the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. We also welcomed back the Rev. Richard Hadel, SJ, of the Class of 1952 to preach at our annual Homecoming Mass, during which we honored M. James VanDyke of the Class of 1972 as Alumnus of the Year. We are profoundly grateful to God for our students’ many successes in academics, their growth in their faith lives, their athleticism in our sports programs, their labors in our service projects, and their active participation in the many other cocurricular organizations and activities Rockhurst offers. Thanks be to God for the young “men for others” of Rockhurst High! AMDG,
Rev. Vincent Giacabazi, SJ Principal, Rockhurst High School
ROCKHURST’S ENROLLMENT REMAINS STRONG
Seniors sing along to “Take Me Home, Country Roads” in their cowboythemed outfits to close out the first school pep rally of the year on Sept. 13, 2019.
The 2019-20 academic year at Rockhurst High School kicked off in August with the student body near capacity. The school continues to enjoy widespread enrollment from across the greater Kansas City area.
The school year began with a student body of 987 young men from 95 different ZIP codes across the bistate region in Missouri and Kansas. These students represented 120 grade schools.
The freshman class includes 245 students. The class comes from 62 different middle schools, representing 73 different ZIP codes. There is a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio. The majority of the student body resides in Missouri (60%) and most are Catholic (80%). The school has a 20% rate of diversity, with ethnic backgrounds that include African American, Asian American, Caucasian, Hispanic American, Native American and those who declare themselves of “mixed descent.” Rockhurst is awarding $2.7 million in aid to 47% of the student body in 2019-20, with the average gift being $5,800 per student with assistance. Alumni and friends who support the school’s Annual Fund and annual auction provide the funding. Rockhurst looks forward to the class of 2024 joining in fall 2020. The priority application and priority financial aid deadlines are Dec. 16, 2019. There are two dates for the High School Placement Test (HSPT): Dec. 7, 2019 and Jan. 11, 2020.
STUDENTS SPEND SUMMER IN IGNATIAN SERVICE Each summer, Rockhurst High School students have the opportunity to put “men for others” into action, at a local, national and international level. Four “Total Ignatian Experience (TIE)” trips are offered for current students. In summer 2019, more than 100 students participated in service trips. TIE Kansas City is for rising sophomores, volunteering on a local level. Jerusalem Farm hosts students in historic northeast Kansas City. Staying with Jerusalem Farm involves living simply, conserving resources, working hard, sharing stories and even cooking. Each day the group works in the home of a community member on house-related projects such as painting, installing siding or flooring, or drywalling. Students enjoy evenings focused on community living and learning about social justice issues present here in their hometown. Twenty-one members of the class of 2022 participated in TIE KC in summer 2019.
Twenty-one rising sophomores volunteered at TIE Kansas City.
TIE Appalachia is for rising juniors, volunteering on a national level. Working with Habitat for Humanity, students focus their efforts on completing a major phase of constructing a home for a family in need. Students enjoy community meals and spend time with members of the community in Robbins, Tennessee, for a week while working on the project. Habitat Appalachia is the second oldest Habitat site in the world, and they have a strong tradition of hard work and Southern hospitality. There were two TIE Appalachia trips in summer 2019 and 46 total members of the class of 2021 participated. TIE Tijuana is for rising seniors, volunteering on an international level. In Tijuana, Mexico, the organization Esperanza operates to construct housing with human dignity in mind. The trip involves traveling to San Diego, driving 30 minutes across the U.S./Mexican border and remaining in the La Gloria neighborhood of Tijuana for the week. Each day, students work hard to dig foundations, construct concrete walls, pour ceilings and have some fun along the way. Thirtyseven members of the class of 2020 participated in TIE Tijuana in summer 2019.

HURTADO SCHOLARS PROGRAM COMPLETES MATURATION The Hurtado Scholars Program at Rockhurst High School was founded in 2012 with a group of rising sixth-graders from inner-city diocesan schools who showed great Thirty-six sixth- through eighth-graders are enrolled the Hurtado Scholars Program for 2019-20. They gathered before beginning their potential, but for 2019 summer studies. whom a Catholic, college preparatory education may not have been attainable. The program now has 66 students spanning grades 6-12. Scholars enroll in the program during the summer prior to their sixth grade year. Admission into the program is based on a recommendation from the principal of one of the three feeder schools for the program: St. Regis Academy, Our Lady
of Hope and Holy Cross (Missouri). Scholars then spend their sixth- through eighth-grade summers and two days per week during the school year improving academic and study skills through additional classes and tutoring from Rockhurst teachers and student volunteers. Scholars also enjoy field trips, grow spiritually and work with the “Thinking through Art” Program at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Once a Scholar graduates from the program as an eighthgrader, he will be enrolled into Rockhurst and will receive the necessary financial assistance all four years, thanks to generous benefactors. Rockhurst’s class of 2020 includes seven Hurtado Scholars, the first to graduate from the program and from Rockhurst. There are currently 36 Scholars who are in the program, in grades six through eight, and 30 graduates who are current Rockhurst students.
ENGINEERING STUDENTS CONSTRUCT TWO HALLOWEEN COSTUMES Engineering students at Rockhurst High School constructed Halloween costumes for wheelchair-bound children for the third consecutive year. Rockhurst partners with Walkin’ & Rollin’ Costumes, which works to provide these children with amazing costumes that fit over their wheelchairs, free of charge. Students in Engineering 2 collaborated to design and construct Cinderella’s carriage for 5-year-old Zoe and a Morgana Bus from “Persona 5” for 9-year-old Sage. They spent several weeks of class time and personal free time to complete the costumes. “Seeing Zoe that happy when we presented her with the carriage was a great feeling,” said David King ’20. “Our group spent a lot of time designing, measuring and constructing and we’re proud that she liked it.” The costumes were initially presented to Zoe and Sage on Oct. 10 to ensure that they were compatible with their wheelchairs. They were officially revealed at Walkin’ & Rollin’ Costumes’ Twisted Halloween Party at the Independence Center, during which 12 children received their Halloween creations.
Students in Robotics Engineering 2 class designed and created a Morgana Bus for 9-year-old Sage.

SIX SENIORS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS Six Rockhurst High School seniors have been announced as National Merit Semifinalists. They are: Joseph Berglund, Watson Deacon, Brendan Kiefer, Michael Navato, Casey O’Halloran and Caleb Phillips. On average, approximately 1.6 million high school students took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and around 50,000 earned the highest index score to qualify for National Merit Scholarship Program recognition. Of those top students, approximately one-third, or about 16,000, are then named as Semifinalists. Looking forward to February, some 15,000 Semifinalists will be notified that they have been named Finalists. Joseph Berglund on his National Merit Semifinalist selection: “This validates that studying hard can pay off. It will also help my parents financially with any scholarships that I might receive as a result of the selection. “My favorite things about Rockhurst are the community and the opportunity. I think that Rockhurst is a positive place. Many teachers make themselves available before, during, or after school for help, and most are coaches or club moderators of some sort, so you can get to know them a little better as people.”
Michael Navato on his National Merit Semifinalist selection: “This selection means a lot to me. I always want feedback on how I’m doing, and being selected as a National Merit Semifinalist really lets me know I’m on the right track. My favorite thing about Rockhurst is the performing arts program. Though small, most everyone in it has a relentless passion for what they do. In choir, in band, in theater, we all care about the art that we produce.” Casey O’Halloran on his National Merit Semifinalist selection: “Being selected as a Semifinalist is a great honor; it feels really gratifying to be recognized for my hard work. Here at Rockhurst, I love the people and the overall community. We have great academics and sports programs, and I am involved in the SGA, Math Club and Chess Club.” Caleb Phillips on his National Merit Semifinalist selection: “The National Merit Semifinalist selection opens up so many doors for my future. I have the opportunity to receive many different merit scholarships that will make it easier to pay for private schooling. I love how interconnected the students and teachers are at Rockhurst. They take a special interest in our lives, especially seen in clubs and sports.”
Watson Deacon on his National Merit Semifinalist selection: “It means a lot to me, because it’s possible that I’ll have the option to graduate debt-free at some colleges and get significant scholarships at others. My favorite things about Rockhurst are the people with whom I’ve built relationships, especially through my involvement in Mock Trial, Entrepreneurship Club and Gardening and Philosophy Club.” Brendan Kiefer on his National Merit Semifinalist selection: “To me, becoming a National Merit Semifinalist is not only an indicator of doing well on a test, but also a testament to the opportunities I have on account of coming to Rockhurst. Without this supportive academic community, I would have never achieved what I did here. This is just one of the multitude of reasons I am happy to call Rockhurst my home away from home.”
Six members of the Class of 2020 have been named National Merit Semifinalists. Pictured between Rev. Vincent Giacabazi, SJ, principal, and David Laughlin, president are: (L-R) Michael Navato, Casey O’Halloran, Brendan Kiefer, Watson Deacon, Caleb Phillips and Joseph Berglund.

CHOIR PERFORMS AT KAUFFMAN CENTER On May 6, 2019, more than 225 Rockhurst High School singers had the opportunity to perform at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Through the generosity of donors, Rockhurst’s four student choirs sang in front of nearly 1,200 Rockhurst friends and family in Helzberg Hall. Sam Anderson, Choral Director, and Josh Lawlor, Accompanist, led the beautiful pieces. “Helzberg Hall is an incredible place to sing. The audience encircles the performers on the stage, and with a packed house it was an amazing experience for our Rockhurst community,” said Anderson. “The acoustics of the hall enhanced our choirs’ sound, and the students stepped up their performance with the added thrill of singing in such a beautiful space. This was a culminating moment of so much work and investment that the students and families at Rockhurst have put in over many years.” Rockhurst’s choirs performed in Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts on May 6, 2019. Pictured is the Concert Choir.
The choral program will have the opportunity to perform at the Kauffman Center again on April 29, 2020.
FILMMAKING STUDENTS WIN PSA COMPETITION For the third consecutive year, students from Rockhurst High School won “The Greatest Save Program” PSA Contest for Kansas City. The Greatest Save works to empower children and teens through peer-to-peer education.
John Paris ’20, Ian Mulkey ’21 and Ian McDonald ’21 were members of the winning team of Kansas City’s “The Greatest Save Program” PSA contest.
For the PSA contest, student teams from across the state and country create short films to promote healthy teen living. The Rockhurst team of John Paris ’20, Ian McDonald ’21 and Ian Mulkey ’21 filmed and edited their “Just Drive” PSA that encouraged their peers to keep their cellphones away when driving. Their submission was selected as the winner among Kansas City area school applicants and was entered into the national contest. As part of their prize, the team members joined the Royals on the field prior to the June 12, 2019 home game and were recognized for their efforts.

Luke McLellan ’00 is the moderator of one of Rockhurst High School’s most popular student groups, the Outdoors Club. Members plan and experience a variety of outdoor activities, from camping trips to one-day fishing or rock climbing excursions. In July 2019, a group of 20 students and four adults journeyed to WrangellSt. Elias National Park in Alaska. At 13.2 million acres, it is the largest park in the United States. The Outdoors Club spent two weeks pack rafting and ice climbing on or alongside glaciers, backpacking in small groups in the backcountry, learning about park history and King Salmon fishing. McLellan also led a group of 11 Rockhurst alumni and 10 friends of the school to Mount Everest Base Camp in June. It has an elevation of 17,600 feet and took the group nine days to get there.

Therefore, this will be the first year when the school knows that every single student in the building experienced computational thinking and programming coursework. All told, 2,820 students have enrolled in a computer science course over the past four years (371 this year). That is more than 19 million minutes of computer science education (roughly the age of a 36-year-old) received by Rockhurst students! In addition to students taking a variety of AP Science courses and electives such as Astronomy, 17 students are currently enrolled in the Fundamentals of Science Research course. Last year was the first year students took this class, and the 15 students produced 15 separate research projects. Projects varied widely, such as harvesting platinum from a catalytic converter, designing a guitar pedal from scratch, building a laser cutter, and launching a weather balloon 100,000 feet in the air while collecting and transmitting data for the National Weather Service. One way the Rockhurst curriculum puts the school’s motto, “men for others,” into action is through its Entrepreneurship for Others
course. After two strong years of 43 and 54 students in 2017-18 and 2018-19, respectively, enrollment has jumped to 108 students for the 2019-20 academic year. Students work in teams on solving a problem in their community. They validate their problem through interviews with real people, prototype and run mini experiments of their solution, then pitch their solution at the end of the semester public pitch night. Throughout the semester, students work with multiple adult mentors who assist them along the way through this true-to-life entrepreneurial experience. Within the Robotics and Engineering 2 course, students are learning about the engineering design process through some very real-world projects. Through a partnership with the nonprofit Walkin’ & Rollin’ Costumes, students are designing two Halloween costumes for two wheelchair-bound students. Additionally, students are building a mechanical proof of the Pythagorean theorem, which will play a major role in this fall’s theater production. The semester will conclude with students competing in the ITEEA Reach Challenge building adaptive technology. By the end of the course, students will each earn credentials in 3D modeling software. The above examples describe the educational landscape at Rockhurst High School. These learning experiences have already helped Rockhurst students earn high-quality internships through YEP KC (Young Entrepreneurs Program, Kansas City). Last year, three Rockhurst students earned spots at this highly competitive opportunity. As students continue to experience real-world learning opportunities through earning numerous college credits, industry credentials, entrepreneurial experiences and internships, Rockhurst looks forward to celebrating their success when they graduate and go on to improve their community, modeling what it means to be a “man for and with others.”
