WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE LOVING?

At Rockhurst being loving translates to many things; one those things is "Brotherhood". Being physically strong, creatively strong, and intellectually strong are all very important components in the formation of young men, but being emotionally strong is something that Rockhurst takes pride in instilling in our students. Whether it is our commitment to serving others through service, the brotherhood fostered among classmates and peers, or the ability to be vulnerable in our retreat and social-emotional counseling opportunities, Rockhurst knows an emotionally strong young man is a successful young man.

4

YEAR IGNATIAN RETREAT PROGRAM

Our counseling department has developed a peer-led program to combat the stigma around mental illness and it has led to interventions for those seeking help or in need. The unique aspect of this program is it's designed for students to recognize signs of distress in their peers and what to do when they are worried about a friend. Teaching our students to be advocates for those in need is a core value of the Rockhurst education.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE RELIGIOUS?

It goes without saying that the foundation of a Catholic School is religious formation. But what makes a Jesuit education different? At Jesuit schools like Rockhurst we are part of a model that highlights the following things as important: Metropolitan - Rockhurst High School serves the greater Kansas City area by educating Ignatian leaders, “men for others”, in the Roman Catholic, Jesuit, college preparatory tradition. In the spirit of Saint Ignatius Loyola, its goal is the formation of the whole person within a diverse and disciplined environment. We serve those across the city in several different zip codes (95) and feeder schools (112).

Advocates for Faith - Our students advocate and share their faith beyond the walls of Rockhurst. Our students participate in activities like the March for Life and the Ignatian Family Teach-In to promote our Catholic values to the outside world. In a recent survey of graduates from the years 2007-2014, 72% of graduates of Rockhurst say they have stayed active in faith-related activities after Rockhurst, 40% higher than the national average. Rockhurst offers daily Mass and weekly reconciliation and adoration. Monthly, students meet for class Masses in the Rose Theater, and our whole student body meets throughout the year on Holy Days of Obligation for all-school Masses.

Spiritually Guided - With a robust, four-year, Ignatian retreat program, Rockhurst focuses on guiding your son through his spiritual growth during the formative years in a student's spiritual life. Our retreat program puts the leadership of many of the aspects in students' hands, especially our Freshman Retreat, produced and guided by more than 100 upperclassmen.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE COMMITTEDÂ TO JUSTICE? Following the Jesuit theme of "Walking with the Excluded," the Ignatian Service Program gives year-round to the community. How can we serve others in need around us? That is the question underlying all four years of the Rockhurst formation. The answer is presented in one very clear commitment required of every Rockhurst student: service for or with others. It may be considered a requirement for graduation, but if you ask our students it is treated as more of a lifechanging opportunity to see how our actions can positively impact those around us.

SERVICE IMMERSION TRIPS

Our service begins the very first day of freshman year with Freshman Service Day and continues throughout the next four years, culminating with Senior Service Projects. Senior Service Projects are a three-week intensive service program through agencies and organizations within Kansas City metropolitan area and around the continent. Students are given the opportunity to give back to the organization of their choice complementing the affective learning outcomes of the classroom curriculum with experiential opportunities that serve to transform their hearts more toward the Heart of Christ. Our dedication to service comes from the life and example of Jesus Christ in the Gospels, from the Catechism, Catholic Social Teaching, and the centuries-old and more recent Jesuit documents that call for "the service of faith and promotion of justice.

MEN OF THE FUTURE

Freshmen begin meeting with their college counselor in the spring semester to start laying the path for college. This builds a strong 3.5-year relationship with their college counselor who can advise them on the college planning process.

-THE 21ST CENTURY LEARNER-

What do you need to compete in a modern world? In a survey of 2007-2014 graduates of Rockhurst High School, 99% went on to a four-year college or university. Of that 99%, 73% went on to finish their degree in four years or fewer, which is 23% higher than the national average. Also, those students brought with them an average of 15 college credits from their time at Rockhurst. This is due in part to the rigorous, college preparatory, curriculum and our extensive, four-year college counseling program.

Rockhurst students are prepared to compete in an everchanging work environment. Rockhurst prides itself on being the first school in Missouri or Kansas to earn the national AdvancED STEM Accreditation. Rockhurst's STEAM program offers a robust, four-year curriculum that promotes 21st century learning and intertwines with a rich liberal arts foundation. All freshmen are required to take a computer science course in order to learn how to code. Beyond that, we offer coursework in engineering, computer science, robotics, entrepreneurship, and opportunities for independent science study.
