Dear Reader,

Jorrie Johnson and Shweta Raikar

In this 2015 edition of Rochester Women’s Business & Resource Directory, we feature 24 women on the cover with mini articles (advertorials) about them inside, “Networking and Service Organizations” and an article about modern day mentorships. I’ve met many women in the community and mentored women to go beyond their roles with RochesterWomen magazine. I recently read on Facebook, “Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t,” according to Bill Nye the Science Guy. With this in mind, the word networking should not sound threatening. Find out who people are, who they know and what is new with them and their organization(s). I participate in a variety of networking/social/ service groups. At a triathlon club social gathering a member asked me, “What do you do?” I didn’t know if she was asking what I do professionally, what athletic events I compete in or how I train. She was actually referring to my professional endeavors. While hosting a meal for Interfaith Hospitality Network, I met a couple of hosts and the family we were serving. It was a good networking opportunity for each of us. Networking can be done in many settings through formal membership organizations, a place of worship or at a sporting event. In this 2015 Women’s Business & Resource Directory, there are more than 200 resources (non-profit) listings of non-profit ”service” organizations in Rochester area. If you are looking for a way to connect with people who share an interest, there is probably an organization listed. If not, I encourage you to start one and let me know, so I can list it in next year’s directory. Women who have previously worked with me for Rochester Women magazine continue to amaze me, becoming teachers, owning their own publications and writing for The Huffington Post. I like to think that I and others on RochesterWomen magazine team mentored them, giving them experience and encouraging them to believe in themselves and their dreams. I have also mentored women more formally as high school mentees and college interns. This fall, Shweta Raikar is interning with me to complete credits for her degree in business administration from Winona State University. During the time I spend with Shweta, I hope she learns a little about publishing while I learn to slow down, examine what I am doing and explain. Yes, mentoring a student or a professional is a huge time investment, with returns tenfold. I hope you take time to read through the advertorials, articles, Business and Resource listings in this 2015 Rochester Women’s Business & Resource Directory. I’m sure you will find someone or something you didn’t already know. All the best in 2015! Jorrie L. Johnson, Publisher 507-259-6362 jorrie@RWmagazine.com RWmagazine.com

“Making friends while having a blast dancing!” 2015 Rochester Women’s Business & Resource Directory 15

Unlike Weigel, Lauren Smith has been working at her job for less than a year. She is a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota Rochester’s Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program. She is 23. Yet, as social strategist for the Rochester-based web company BrandHoot, she regularly finds herself in the unlikely role of mentor, teaching non-techsavvy, older business professionals how to navigate the digital world.

Modern Mentors Engaging, Encouraging, Emerging

“Not everyone likes technology,” Smith remarks. “I treat my customers just as I would like to be treated when I’m learning something new. I start with the basics.”

By Sarah Oslund

I

can still hear the collective groan of the classroom when I think back to my college, high school, and even elementary school years and recall a teacher or professor say, “Let’s break up into small groups.” Or even worse, “Partner up.” Despite the fact that we know working together produces more diverse, dynamic results, we live in an “I can do it on my own” society. If we’re going to succeed at something, we want it to be our success done our way on our terms. If our collective society could go back and find a way to spell “team” with an “i” in it, you can bet we would.

Misconceptions of Mentorships When my (male) boss suggested to me that I might benefit from having a female mentor, it was on the heels of an interpersonal work situation where I turned to him for advice that a female peer may have been better suited to provide. While I figured he was probably right, the mere thought of scheduling twohour weekly meetings with someone more successful than I am who was probably going to preach to me about how to achieve my career goals and give me assignments I didn’t have time for sounded less than enjoyable. I procrastinated and invited a friend to happy hour to commiserate about the work situation. It was then, over a couple hours of conversation and a couple glasses of wine, that I realized my long-time friend was already my mentor – for several years. She told me how I would benefit from reading Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In.” She encouraged me to own my role when I participated in meetings and on committees. She played devil’s advocate and forced me to answer the hard questions honestly. I already had a mentor, but hadn’t realized it.

Seek Out Someone You Admire Karel Weigel has been an active and passionate pillar of the Rochester community. In her 30 years at the Mayo Clinic, Weigel served in a variety of positions, concluding her career as Mayo’s first Administrator for Community Relations from 1999 until she retired in 2009. Weigel now serves as the Rotary District Governor, one of only three people from Rochester to ever serve in this role and one of very few women to achieve this accomplishment.

Conversation is key to being both a good mentor and a good mentee. “Importantly, mentees come with ideas of what they want to do. If they expect me to just give them answers,” Weigel continues, “they will be disappointed. We both have a responsibility to own our part in the relationship.”

“Conversation is key to being both a good mentor and a good mentee.” Weigel is a vocal advocate of informal mentorships. “While I know some assigned mentorships are successful,” Weigel says, “many of them run a close second to an arranged marriage: a painful obligation.” As is the case for most successful relationships, Weigel sees a good mentoring relationship as one of respect and recommends seeking out someone whose style or background you admire. “In my professional life and in the leadership roles I’ve had in the community, I have found mentoring to be a byproduct of relationships already developed.” Not often does mentoring take place through an official “now we’ve begun a mentoring relationship” conversation, but rather “it is often just an extension of a conversation already occurring,” Weigel remarks.

feel everyone benefits from having and being a mentor. Life throws curveballs. Occasionally, you need someone to help you through the obstacles, no matter what their age.”

Lauren Smith, a social strategist with BrandHoot, regularly finds herself in a mentoring role with older business professionals.

“I treat my customers just as I would like to be treated when I’m learning something new. I start with the basics.”

Smith understands that some of her clients may not want to learn about social strategies or how to write a strong 140-character Tweet. Some just want to see results. “You don’t want to talk technology jargon to someone who hardly knows how to navigate Facebook, but to see and understand results, you have to know what you’re looking at. Even a few minutes of simple instruction can go a long way.”

Sarah Oslund is a freelance writer and is no longer mentor-resistant.

By being a “reverse mentor” to her clients, Smith is able to provide more meaning and acceptance to this newer form of marketing, helping them to become more comfortable with the idea of straying from tradition. “I

Karel Weigel serves as the Rotary District Governor and is an advocate for mentoring.

Reverse Mentorships to Teach Technolgy The spectrum of mentorship in business is changing. We have been conditioned to believe that older means wiser. But today’s mentors are no longer just seasoned professionals shepherding along their respective organization’s newbies. With the incredibly fast pace at which technology is advancing, in order for leaders to stay credible and at the top of game, they need to be able to keep up with the latest in digital and social media advances. Enter the concept of “reverse mentoring.”

Networking and Service Organizations I nvolvement gives back personally and professionally

Whether you’re looking to expand your network, seeking ways to give back to the community, or both, networking groups and service clubs can benefit both your personal and professional lives. Rochester offers a plethora of options to choose from, but trying to decide which type of group will best meet your needs with so many options available can seem like a job itself.

Networking for Business

In the simplest of terms, networking is leveraging your social and professional contacts to generate business. True business networking is focused, strategic, and results in more than casual relationships. BNI, also known as Business Networking, Inc., is the world’s largest business networking organization. In 2013, BNI generated 5.4 million referrals which resulted in $6.5 billion dollars in business for its members. “BNI focuses on building trusted relationships which will lead to referrals,” says Barbara Wright-Quarton, a founding member of the Zumbro Valley BNI chapter and member for 14 years. “Having an established group to reach out to as trusted resources or to send a client to is desirable for a number of reasons.” Like BNI, Master Networks works to enhance business relationships and increase referrals but is focused more narrowly on small business professionals. Master Networks operates on the tried-andtrue best method of advertising: word of mouth. Tami Greenslade is a self-employed realtor who was looking to get out of her home office, engage with some like-minded professionals, and meet people in other industries. “Master Networks’ solid weekly agenda gives everyone a chance to talk about their businesses,” Greenslade explains. “I wanted something more than a social gathering. I wanted a group that actually produced results for my business.”

Networking via social media and connecting with other professionals online is easier than ever, allowing us to connect with a great number of people, but quantity shouldn’t trump quality. It’s important not to neglect traditional methods of relationship development. “Face-to-face meetings allow people to get to know each other, ask pertinent questions, get clarifications, and thereby build trust,” says Wright-Quarton.

Serving the Community

While networking is important for career development, some women are looking for ways to personally give back to their communities. For these individuals, joining an organization focused on service is a better option. Lions, Sertoma, Kiwanis, and Elks are just a few of the many service-based options available to them. While networking can happen naturally in any group, Stacie Salo, a member of the Rochester Morning Pride Lions Club since 2006, was looking for a group solely to give back. “It’s not about advancing my career. It’s about helping others.” Salo’s mission these days is recruiting younger members. “The Lions are the largest service organization in the world,” Salo said, “but the average Lion is 60 years old.” Recruitment of younger service club members is not unique to the Lions; the average age of Kiwanis, Rotarians, and Elks is also

increasing. Salo recently traveled to San Juan, Puerto Rico to speak on a panel at the USA/Canada Leadership Forum. “It was an exhilarating experience. It got me very excited about the steps we’re taking to attract and accommodate a younger demographic,” she said. “They are the future of service.”

expand her professional network. “I have made a number of connections,” Holmes says, “both personally and professionally.” She attributes connections through Rotary and other means of networking in helping her land a newly created role as the vice president of marketing for RAEDI (Rochester Area Economic Development, Inc.). While Holmes initially saw Rotary as a networking opportunity, she quickly took the club’s “Service Above Self ” motto to heart. “I’m still amazed at the number of opportunities the club offers. If you’re interested in reading and education, there are literacy and youth mentorship programs. You can host a student through the foreign exchange program. You can serve abroad through Rotary International. The options are endless.”

Heather Holmes is the vice president of marketing for RAEDT and an active Rotarian.

Service organizations attract members by focusing on causes. Michon Rogers was nominated to the Elks by several friends, but the Elks’ focus on youth development was what ultimately drew her in. “The Elks’ philanthropic philosophy and focus on providing opportunities to deserving youth through scholarships and camps made joining an easy decision for me,” Rogers stated. “It’s also a perk to be able to give back while spending time with friends.”

Holmes’ most meaningful experience so far has been serving dinners at the Salvation Army with fellow Rotarians. “I’ve been touched by the gratefulness of the individuals I’ve served,” Holmes states. “I feel blessed to interact with them and share a smile.” Whatever type of organization you choose, the meaningful relationships you create with other professionals can open doors to incredibly rewarding experiences. There are over two hundred non-profit resources listed in the Rochester Women’s Business & Resource Directory. Find one that fits your passions.

It’s no secret that a great networking group can be career- and life-changing. A Rotarian for just over a year, Heather Holmes joined Rotary to

Advice for Life Wealth Beyond Money

Coming in 2015! Securities and advisory services offered through ProEquities, Inc Member FINRA & SIPC. Full Circle Financial and Women’s Wealth Studio are independent of ProEquities, and do not offer legal or tax advice.

Why are so many Rochester Women making the switch to work with Szablis and her multi-disciplinary team of financial professionals? After an initial consult earlier this year it was said best.

“This is something you just

have to experience for yourself.”

From the first appointment you can feel the difference. It’s hard to nail down exactly what makes her program so comfortable and her clients feel so confident. The Personal Financial Websites each client receives definitely provide a “wow” factor. But more likely, it’s Szablis’ is approachable, comfortable, easy to understand, and very down-to-earth. But don’t let that fool you. Though modest about it, she is a very seasoned and experienced financial professional with over 14 years of experience, some of them as a senior executive for a large bank investment program in Minneapolis. Her team is comprised of exceptionally dedicated and experienced financial planning partners, a client service staff with over 20 years of combined experience, and multi-disciplinary financial professionals who can address each client’s specialty needs from insurance, to investments, to estate and tax planning. Many clients say they feel more like family than clients, and that’s just how she and her team think of them. “We all care for our clients and provide plans and advice as if they are our family”, says Kim Jungas-Samson, Branch Operations Specialist who has worked with members of Szablis’ team for over 12 years. It says a lot when you are the first call a client makes when they find out they have cancer. Or when you’re among the first to know about a new baby on the way. It’s also rewarding to get a thank-you note from a client who retired early, because before you helped them plan for it they had no idea they could! This happens all the time here, and to Szablis’ and her team, it means they are serving clients in a meaningful way.
