appy Holidays! As we put together our final issue of the year, we want to take a moment and wish everyone the best of the holiday season! It’s been an interesting year, to say the least. As most of you know, we have been slowly transitioning away from a print publication every month and focusing more on our digital product. Although we understand that many of you miss having a print issue to hold in your hands and read, our economic times dictate that we look into alternative means of producing your favorite publication. The main reason to move all digital is, of course, financial. It is much more cost effective to produce a publication in a digital format which allows us to keep our costs down and gives us an opportunity to provide more affordable rates to our advertisers. A digital issue also gives us more flexibility and allows us to create an interactive and ultimately more engaging publication. Look for even more innovative changes in the coming year as we move further into the digital age. Including a new name for 2017, new features and column, new media partnerships, and so much more! Plus, a digital only publication is better for the environment. We can provide a publication to an unlimited audience without one issue ever landing in a landfill. In our final issue of 2016, we focus on holiday gift giving. Head to page 16 for our special Fab Finds section filled with unique and local gift ideas for everyone on your list. Our cover story features a listing of all of the fantastic holiday shows you can enjoy this

Kelly and her husband own three restaurants in Village Gate: Salenas Mexican Restaurant, NOX, and now RYCE. Along with running three successful businesses, Kelly is also raising three kids under the age of ten. That’s a monumental task for most people, but somehow Kelly manages to keep it all going. Read her inspiring story on page 36. Thanks to everyone who came out to our Ultimate Women’s Expo on November 17th. It was a great event filled with shopping, music, fun and incredible fashions. CAN THERE BE A POSITIVE SIDE TO BEING

Trumped? In thinking of December, it is a time of giving, celebration, holidays and officially kicks off the anticipation of a New Year. It’s time for resolution, planning, and renewal. Focus is often placed on how individuals can become better in the year to come. It is also the time of year society is left to deal with the aftermath of the November election. The last election, four years ago, we saw history in the making, our first African-American president-Obama. I recall thinking “We as a country have come a long way.” The first lady, Michelle, brought a sense of style to the table the nation never encountered before and it was refreshing. I must admit, I like many others are very surprised with this year’s election results. Our country was presented the opportunity to make history again, the first woman president. Wouldn’t Susan B. Anthony be proud? It seemed like it was a reality. Many people believed the time was now. Let’s do it again, history in the making. Sadly, the dream faded quickly. Not today Mr. President. The election and the days leading up to the election can be described as nothing short of eating popcorn at the circus waiting to bring in the clowns”. Topics of discussion on the Trump side of it represented everything this country does not tolerate in the quest for being the melting pot, the land of opportunity and liberty and justice for all. Starting off in the debates, Trump called a female journalist a sleaze, grabbed another’s hand shoving down a phone refusing to answer a question regarding women and lastly, the most known demeaning comment of the day “ Grab her by

the P----“. This banter did not leave women feeling very confident. How was Trump was the candidate to represent us? Let’s not forget claims of sexual harassment etc. and his involvement in berating 1996 Miss Universe by referring to her as “Miss Piggy” for a 12-pound weight gain. What about the assault on immigration? The United States of America, say it isn’t so, the land of the free, home of the brave, once known as the land of opportunity, opening all doors to allow immigrants to come to America, now purposing to build a wall in Mexico and have Mexico pay for it. How will this all work out? Mr. President, when elected promised prioritizing jobs ensuring the security of the American people and reworking immigration with the focus on select candidates based on the ability to achieve financial self-sufficiency (1) As frightening as it may be, Mr. Trump won the election fair-and-square and now this is our president for the next four years. As a country, we must find a bright side, as our mothers used to tell us. Can there be a positive side to being Trumped? There is always the system of checks and balances. A president-elect is not just allowed to do whatever he wants to. We must hope this system withstands being Trumped. So, Mr. President, Mr. Trump is a successful businessman. Maybe he has what it takes to balance the budget, a problem for all politicians. Tax the rich and give to the poor may not be his slogan of how taxes will be. There is one area where politicians, usually stay away from because in general, they must

all be “tough on crime”. New York state is actually a prime example, where there is an enormous amount of tax-payer dollars being wasted and there is also a tie to immigration which most Americans would not be offended by sending mass numbers home. Who as a taxpayer wants to spend more money on taxes unnecessarily? As a defense attorney, I know much more about crime and prisons than the average human being would want to. It is not as exciting as all the Law and Order shows make it out to be, I tell you. It is sad and disheartening to watch, as a system designed for rehabilitation turns into ”all about the Benjamin’s”. Franklins that is. Money makes the world go around. In crimes and prisons, the dollar sign is no different. Coming through the years, we as a nation witnessed the “War on Drugs”, the need for “truth-in-sentencing-grants and ensuring violent felons are put away off our streets, the felony-murder rule where, if an individual takes part in a felony and someone is killed they can be charged with murder and the “three strikes you’re out” sentence enhancement crime initiatives which have resulted in what is now known as mass incarceration. The United States of America, the land of the free and the home of the brave is now incarceration nation. So in America, if a person ventures here from another country to the land of opportunity and commits a crime, guess what? They are subject to deportation. That’s right kicked out! Sent back to where they came from!

LAW AND

hip hop BY CHERYL L. KATES-BENMAN ESQ.

But this export business is okay because the individual committed a crime against “the People”. Here’s the kicker, though, the individual is sent to prison at the taxpayer’s expense and housed in prison for as many years as the sentence requires. For instance, a sentence of (20-Life) indicates the individual serves 20 years in prison prior to becoming eligible for parole release. At this time, the inmate appears before the Parole Board. After their interview, a decision is rendered granting parole or denying parole. In NYS, the hold period is up to 2 years. This process could continue for the rest of the inmate’s life. In thinking about this situation logically, people cannot commit crimes here and not receive punishment. As a nation, portraying being “tough on crime” acts as a deterrent. Deter others from doing bad things. Lead by example, “don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time!” Isn’t that right Mr. President? When we add up the numbers, for the

28

DECEMBER 2016 :: ROCHESTERWOMANMAG.COM

incarceration nation the cost is astronomical. Billions of dollars are spent to house and care for the condemned across the nation. In fact, there are two million convicted criminal aliens in the United States (2). Nationally, 25,000 of those individuals are convicted of committing homicides (2). Our government recognizes correctional savings as currently, an immigration control policy exists. The “Institutional Removal Program” functions considering public safety by removing criminal aliens from the United States using deportation (3). In NYS, foreignborn inmates make up 10% of the inmate population (3). As of December 31, 2013, using the IRP program, releasing foreign-born inmates early for deportation in operating and capital costs saved $157 million dollars (3). In NYS, the program is called Early Conditional Parole for Deportation Only ( 3). In 2013, 5,248 inmates in NYS fit this category (3). The use of this program

documents only a 2% recidivism rate (3). Communities are safe and the taxpayers do not suffer the burden of financing housing inmates, sometimes for decades beyond their minimum release date. Mr. President, as a business man we all win with deportation of all eligible criminal aliens. The savings to taxpayers will be astronomical. In closing, find the bright side. (1). FASHION

forward BY JOAN LINCOLN

As I reflect on the numerous fashion articles and blogs that I have had the pleasure of writing over the years, I am reminded how the Holiday Season allows us to really express how we embrace our individual style and express ourselves by way of our enthusiasm for this festive season. Throughout the Holiday and through the New Year, I beg you to remember that some celebrations aren’t always the happiest of times for many. Hug a little longer, listen a bit more intently and share a smile more than ever before! So get out that magic “Sparkle” wand a spread a little glitter and sunshine throughout the season. A client reminded me recently that there was a report and a video documenting the behavior of people throughout New York State and Rochester happened to be recognized as one of the happiest. The report shared that we were more eager to hold the door for one another, we acknowledged each other and smiled while passing on the sidewalk or in common areas, and Rochester didn’t hesitate to engage with strangers. As a small business owner, I am proud to say I am a transplant Rochesterian now and attempt to spread the same HUG that Rochester has given me, my family and my three local businesses. Go ahead~ “Sparkle Like you mean it! So as I was preparing to write my final Fashion Forward article for the year about the hottest Holiday and New Year Celebrations looks, and there are many to share with you, I am reminded to suggest that you start every day with that one incredible accessory that can’t be bought, put in a box or found under the tree... put on that smile that tells the world that you are happy with who you are, spread that with as many family, friends and strangers as you can and always remember, you use fewer facial muscles when smiling than when frowning. “Sparkle like you mean it” Speaking of Sparkle there is plenty of it! Throughout my many buying trips for my new women’s clothing boutique, Trilogy Fashion Foundry, that I opened this past August, I was amazed that the glitter sparkle game of embellished clothing was being suggested for more day wear than just the traditional evening, gala, and holiday celebrations. So what this means is put a little more glitz in your glam and make the sparkle the “hero” of your holiday outfits. So sequin and beading may not be your daywear go-to look, so add a little “arm candy” meaning wear your sparkle on your wrists this ability to mix and match jewelry - particularly bracelets, watches, and other wrist accouterments is a more subtle way to ~”Sparkle like you mean it” Sparkle not your thing but still want that feminine look of sheer perfection? Yup, you got it add a touch of sheer to the hemline, wrist or neckline to capture the mystery of elusiveness. For the past couple of seasons, we’ve been going sheer crazy. Sheer skirts, sheer shirts, sheer dresses – you name it, if it’s sheer, we’ll wear it! Maybe a tutu is going a bit too far but some say “life is more fun in a tutu”, so I say give it a whirl with your own style and flair!

Sparkle

LIKE YOU MEAN IT!

My final flirty fashion forward holiday suggestion is the the silk blouse and more particularly the famous “pussy-bow tie” blouse! Use the seventies as your reference point when this look was all the rage, allow me to remind you, fashion always comes back. For those of us who may have watched our past political campaign from more of a Fashion perspective (and boy was there lots to watch) we saw that the seventies silhouette of color, full flare pants, and the suggested pussy-bow blouses were apparent - or were these outfits selected to make a political statement more than a fashion statement! HE WAFFLE FACTORY that lends to a great deal of his inspiration today.

BY JULIA ANTENUCCI | PHOTOS BY BRANDON VICK

A Confectionery Delight The smell of confectionery sugar and browning waffles hit my nose as soon as I entered The Waffle Factory, as I happily took refuge from the snow falling rapidly outside. The counter boasted their concise yet imaginative menu, as well as the day’s specials and a box of “stroopwafels,” a caramel waffle treat that Nick Musson, owner, and operator, grew up warming and melting over hot coffee. Decorated modestly but smartly, the small building seemed more like a close family member’s home than a “factory.” But in a lot of ways, I think this is what Musson wanted: a place where family tradition and imagination come together to make something fantastical. Though not professionally trained, Nick grew up in the world of food. Musson is of Greek and Belgian descent and spent his formative years in the kitchens of his family’s local eateries. For 40 years, his grandmother owned and operated The Royal Knight, a well-loved Greek diner. And before that, she ran the Candy Kitchen, where Nick was exposed to a world of confectionery wonder

But Nick did not originally see himself in the food service industry. In college, he studied international marketing and from there, went into the corporate world. But true to most stories of passion, Nick wasn’t satisfied in the world of business. “I realized that I wasn’t passionate about what I was doing,” he said. So in 2012, Nick left that life behind and opened a small Belgian waffle truck in Rochester. The venture was immediately a hit. In 2014, he left Rochester for Manhattan to take a job managing a tennis club in New York City. But again, the world of waffles called to him. So Nick packed his bags and returned to Rochester in July of 2016. Only months later, The Waffle Factory of Webster opened its doors. As straightforward as its title, The Waffle Factory is a small eatery where diners can indulge in classic Belgian waffles in countless, whimsical iterations. The Belgian waffle is nothing short of a dream, their texture and flavor are due in part to their preparation: yeast-raised waffles flavored with

dense and concentrated, making it susceptible to higher melting points that render crispy, caramelized waffles. Along with the yeast, the pearl sugar creates airy pockets. Combined with the crunch, and whatever toppings you so choose to indulge in, the nooks, crannies and fluffy texture of the waffle can have even the most mature of adults feeling like a kid in a candy store.

“I’ll be laying in bed and a combination will come to me and I’ll write it down, then and there.”

And indeed, tasting these waffles, I was transported to a simpler time where chocolate was an accepted food group and waffles were an appropriate substitute for bread. The menu boasts a plethora of exciting waffle combinations, from a classic waffle with butter and pure maple syrup to the fantastical, 34

DECEMBER 2016 :: ROCHESTERWOMANMAG.COM

In my brief but very sweet visit at the Waffle Factory, I had a run-in with a few of the most popular contenders on the menu. Take the Elvis for example, a waffle topped with peanut butter, banana, bacon and maple syrup. This nostalgic combination hit all the marks: sweet, salty, creamy, nutty, fatty. And for a bacon lover, nothing is more exciting than putting bacon on literally everything. Then there was my personal favorite: the Italian Dreamin. This twisted waffle fantasy come to life consisted of a classic Belgian waffle topped

with housemade factory fudge, cannoli cream drizzle, Nutella, and was accompanied by a whole Ferrero Rocher and cannoli. For the ice cream lovers, there’s even a Wafflewich, which, of course, is soft serve ice cream sandwiched between two perfectly crispy waffles, finished off by a light dusting of confectioners sugar. Moral of the story? Anything tastes good on a Belgian waffle, and Waffle Factory isn’t afraid to push the boundaries and see how far they can go. And Nick is far from finished when it comes to pushing boundaries. In early December, he plans to roll out a series of savory waffles on the menu. In the spring, he plans on transforming the backyard into a traditional European Biergarten, complete with a patio, a swinging grill, and televisions for guests to watch sports games.

Kelly Metras: FOOD, FAMILY, AND PURPOSE

I first met Kelly Metras a few months ago at the Play Ball, which is Strong Museum’s annual fundraising gala. Sitting off at a corner table and chatting with her that night, little did I know she would become one of my most interesting interviews. Kelly has three children of her own, Callan age 6, Harper age 4, and Lennox, who is 10 months old. In addition to being a Mom, she and her husband Aaron own three Village Gate restaurants: Salena’s Mexican Restaurant, Nox, and RYCE. What really prompted me to ask her for an interview was the honest way she spoke about her family life and business.

Kelly presents her true self from the moment you meet her, but I wanted to know more. First question, how does she find time to raise three children age 6 and under while running three restaurants? The answer to my first question was support. Kelly has help, with grandparents willing to watch the children, but she does admit that all her accomplishments wouldn’t be possible if her husband wasn’t in the same profession. In this case, not only is Aaron in the same profession but a co-owner and business partner. “We are both passionate about our businesses and it’s not a problem for us to talk about work,” she said. “It isn’t boring with him because he is right there with you knowing what you are talking about. We are very lucky in that respect.” Kelly and Aaron bought Salena’s Mexican Restaurant about 5.5 years ago when the previous owner asked them to take over. Although neither of them had culinary aspirations, it was all about timing. With the birth of their first daughter, Callan, they were both looking for an opportunity to take their careers in a different direction. Also, after about 12 years working every job at Salena’s from washing dishes to management, they felt a sense of responsibility. Kelly remarked, “Who was going to take care of this place; we loved Salena’s.” As a personal aside, I am

grateful to them for buying the restaurant with the best salsa in town. Soon after they became restaurant owners, the jazz club next to Salena’s closed and they were offered the space. It was an opportunity to become their own neighbors and to create something from scratch. With the addition of two partners, Nox was opened in 2015. The idea was to create a restaurant and lounge that people could be comfortable in or as Kelly put it, “a coffee shop and dive bar feel without the diveness”.Following their success with Nox, Kelly and Aaron took the remaining space from the jazz club and transitioned it from an office to RYCE (Rochester Youth Culinary Experience). It was during a drive in a winter storm, where she was struck by an idea to create a self-sustaining restaurant run by students with help from a management team. In partnership with East High School’s Chef/Culinary Arts Teacher, Jeff Christiano, a select group of students work to develop everything from the décor to deciding what goes on the menu. “Everyone wants to own a restaurant,” said Kelly, “they often don’t have enough knowledge of what it actually takes.” This not-for-profit is designed as a three-year program where high school juniors participate in onsite training at East High School and then move on to working at RYCE their senior year, with an option to stay on the year after they graduate.

When Kelly showed up for our interview, she had just come from the first half of her day, which included a workout, shower, and putting up a fresh coat of paint at RYCE. The students decided on a colorful décor and Carribean/Soul Food fusion menu with entrée items that include Jamaican Stewed Goat and Trinidad Fried Chicken. While the food is very important, it is the real heart of the endeavor that will keep us coming back for more. RYCE is the culmination of Kelly’s passions for education, for youth, for food, and most importantly, for Rochester. “I am bringing it 38

full circle. I really feel like this is where my life has been leading me,” she said. Although RYCE is still in need of funding, they are ready and projected to open the week before Christmas 2016. At the end of each interview, I ask the Mompreneur if she has any words of wisdom or advice on how to balance her roles as a Mom and business owner. Kelly smiled and said, “Doesn’t matter if its normal, you have to find your own thing. For my family, that thing is getting together for breakfast every morning because it doesn’t have to be dinner.”

What struck me most about Kelly’s personality is that she doesn’t see limitations, only opportunity. She is open to taking those opportunities because she doesn’t let herself dwell on perfection as the goal. “I fail a little bit at everything,” she said, “but you have to accept it.” Iris Zimmermann is an Olympian and Coowner of the Rochester Fencing Club (when she is not running around after her two daughters, going on play dates, cooking dinner, cleaning, or any other Mom duties.)

weight loss THE HIDDEN SECRET… ACUPUNCTURE HELPS WITH

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season upon us, we find ourselves not eating as healthily as we should be. Between Thanksgiving to New Year’s, a lot of people tend to fall off the wagon and eat whatever they want saying once the new year rolls around they will start back at the gym, or start a weight loss program for their New Year’s Resolution.

There are a lot of myths about how much people really gain during the holiday season. I’ve heard that it is between 5-10lbs, but when you really look at the limited research that has been done, people normally only gain 1-2lbs. The problem is that those who gain don’t tend to lose that 1-2lbs and they carry it into the next holiday season. As each season comes upon us that 1-2lbs gets another 1-2lbs added each year. The real trick is getting through the holiday season without falling off the wagon. How do you do this you ask? That is the question everyone asks and really the only person who asked can answer. Each person is different and each person has their own motivations to staying healthy. So each person has to answer that question for themselves, but there are things that can help along the way. First things first, is starting out with a plan of getting healthy and deciding in which direction you want to take your health in. Do you want to start a diet? Do you want to start an exercise program? Do you want to change your whole lifestyle? If you decide to start with changing your way of eating, then you have to start by picking which kind of diet you can stick with. There are a ton of different diets and more

pop up each day. You have the Atkins diet, Weight Watcher’s, Paleo, Gluten Free, a million different types of cleanses. Where does one start? Your best bet is to start with your primary care doctor and find out if you are in good health. Diets and exercise can be taxing to the body. After checking in with your primary care the next step would be to sit down with a nutritionist and they can help direct you in the right direction.

If you are looking to go the exercise route starting with the primary care doctor is also a very good start. After making sure that you are healthy for exercise the next step is to figure out what kind of exercising you will be doing. Will you do a cardio work out? Weightlifting program? Toning program? Yoga program? A good start would be talking with a personal trainer and having them build you a program. This will give you a person to ask questions and gives you someone who will push toward your goals. Let’s say you have tried all of this and you haven’t found it to be successful and you are now looking at alternative ways of losing weight. Some people turn to diet pills, others turn to different kinds of surgery. Unfortunately, diet pills only work when you continuously use them, and surgery only lasts as long as you stick with a good diet plan. But there is another alternative method that can help with hunger control and weight loss, acupuncture. Acupuncture affects the whole body, including the brain, nervous system, endocrine system and connective tissue. It causes biological responses to occur, including the release of serotonin, endorphins, hormones, and anti-inflammatory agents to help the body heal.

To find out if acupuncture is going to work for you, you need to have a consultation so the acupuncturist can design a treatment plan that is going to work for you. There are hundreds of different points on the body and each point is associated with different ailments and can affect the body in different ways. In the consultation, you will fill out a very detailed health history to help the Acupuncturist determine the right points that need to be work. Discussing with the acupuncturist your true eating, drinking, and exercise regimen will also help.

In a weight loss treatment, you may find needles to be inserted in the ear because of all the acupuncture points on the ear that help with hunger control. The ear has points associated with the mouth, stomach, hunger, endocrine, spleen, adrenal, kidney, thyroid and many others. The number of acupuncture treatments all depends on how the patient responds and what the goals of the patient are. Acupuncture is not a replacement for a good healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle change. Acupuncture can help with hunger control and weight loss but it has to be used in conjunction with dieting and exercising. Acupuncture can also help with stress. As we all know stress is a factor in overeating and eating poorly. We live in a very fast-paced world which doesn’t always allow for the healthiest of lifestyles. So it will take discipline and motivation to change your unhealthy habits, but the first step is taking the first step to health. Give yourself the gift of health this holiday season.

ALL ABOUT

m.e. BY M.E. NESSER

When I was 13, I started having pain in random parts of my body. By college, the symptoms got worse and the night terrors began. At 25, my dad was in a horrific accident, I became pregnant with my first child, and the pain intensified. Three months after giving birth to my son, I found myself pregnant again, and the pain was unbearable. Since then, I have never gone a day without some pain, somewhere. To make my situation even more interesting, the pain isn’t mutually exclusive. For some reason, it feels the need to travel to different places in my body so that no parts ever feel neglected. Lucky m.e.

eleven of the points were sensitive, then I had it. All eighteen points hurt. That was when she agreed something was definitely wrong with me. More importantly, she sympathized with my plight and didn’t think I was crazy. I knew I wasn’t a hypochondriac and that my pain was real. I can’t tell you how good it felt to put a name on all the weird things that were going on in my body. Unfortunately, she told me that until I experienced arthritic concerns, there was nothing she could do to help me and insurance would not cover any more visits with her. I was on my own.

Over the years, I went to a myriad of doctors. I had numbness in my extremities, so I sought out a neurologist. I had pain in my joints, so I went to an orthopedist. Neither physician could come up with an explanation. I kept going back to my general practitioner; he didn’t know what to do with me. His best answer was to have me try a plethora of medications, which did nothing but cause secondary problems. He suggested I see a nutritionist since my diet could have been a contributing factor. The nutritionist told me I had a better diet than she did and couldn’t help me. I did acupuncture for a while, but it was expensive and time-consuming. And, even though it relieved some of the symptoms, I still hurt. I went to a slew of chiropractors but discovered that any kind of adjustment or manipulation caused a bizarre inflammatory response that led to immobility and even greater pain. I saw several massage therapists on a regular basis, but the relief was temporary and the service was often very painful. By 30 years old, I thought I was going crazy.

So now what? I’m told I’ve got this obscure autoimmune disease that doesn’t have a cause or a cure. She didn’t have much to tell me about fibro so I went and bought a few books on the subject. They didn’t offer many more options than I had already tried. It did feel good to know I wasn’t alone in the world and that other people suffered like I did. So I did what we all do in this day and age - I surfed the Internet for everything I could find out about this weird condition I had.

I finally got a referral to a rheumatologist. At first, she didn’t suspect that I had fibromyalgia because I wasn’t overweight, lethargic, or depressed. Back then, those were classic symptoms, in addition to inexplicable pain. Regardless of how I felt, I always made a point of trying to look good. Having people know how I was feeling wasn’t going to make me feel any better, so I focused on doing whatever I could to be happy and make every day a good one. My outgoing personality and positive outlook have saved me. I never suffered from depression. I’ve had issues with anxiety, but that’s because having continual injuries and constant has really pissed me off. I’ve never wanted pity; it serves no purpose. So I made it impossible for others to know what I was going through. I was suffering in silence. Testing for fibro is much different than testing for other diseases. All it took was a simple trigger point test to determine if I had it or not. The rheumatologist put pressure on eighteen parts of my body with her hand. She told me that if

It was so frustrating to have a doctor say that there is no definitive cause or treatment for fibro. Over the years, I’ve come up with a few theories of my own. I truly believe that physical or emotional trauma can trigger the disease. I’ve helped people who have been diagnosed with fibro to go back to the time when it started and try to remember what was going on at that point in their lives. You’d be surprised how many times a life tragedy or bad accident was the catalyst. There were only a few medications fifteen years ago that were prescribed to alleviate some of the symptoms, but they had a lot of side effects. Death was often a side effect. No thanks. I like being alive. When I was diagnosed, antidepressants were the most common drugs that were prescribed. I did try them, even though I wasn’t depressed. The outcome? I got depressed and cried a lot. Fortunately, it was temporary. The caveat to having fibro is that you can be hypersensitive to medications, which can make treatment even more difficult. There were things I could try to feel better, but, for the most part, I was on my own to deal with the pain, numbness, and exhaustion. One of the things that made it bearable was the realization that the disease wasn’t life threatening. My sister had stage three breast cancer. She had extensive radiation and chemotherapy after enduring a complicated mastectomy. She could have died. My issues are inconvenient and uncomfortable, but they won’t kill me. So what has helped me deal with fibro? Love, laughter, and writing. When I was in my mid-

twenties, I changed careers to work in the salon business with my husband Mark. I love working with him. He has been the most supportive man to me, professionally and personally. I also had three children that brought me so much joy. In beauty school, I learned how to wax. I couldn’t believe how fun it was to rip hair off of women’s bodies. I decided this could be a good service to bring to the salon. Suddenly, I became a ridiculously busy Brazilian wax technician. I realized that if I was going to do something to another person that was going to cause him or her pain, I needed to make the experience fast and funny. I make people laugh with crazy stories about things clients do or say. It’s unbelievable how a client’s reaction to getting waxed will provide stories, expressions, and shenanigans that are hysterical. One day, I realized that laughter became my way of dealing with the pain I felt during the day. Several years ago, I started blogging funny stories about my job. It made me happy to know that I could make people smile when they woke up in the morning. And since the morning is an extremely painful time for me, I found that writing made me feel better as well. I discovered that writing was so cathartic that I actually wrote three nonfiction books about Brazilians for the same reason. Laughter has made my life so much fuller and has made living with constant pain a lot more bearable. Putting the stories in print has kept the joy going. If you are suffering from chronic pain, think about keeping a journal or writing a blog. It doesn’t have to be about the pain. It can be about anything. Heck, I wrote three books about ripping out pubic hair! After I finished The Happy Hoo-Ha Trilogy, I started writing an edgy romance series. Not only do I enjoy entertaining people, telling a story has become a necessary hobby for me. Writing has brought incredible joy to my life. It has been the perfect diversion to the obstacles that I have had to deal with. So you aren’t a person that likes to write? That’s okay. Find a hobby that makes you happy. The more positivity you can add to your life, the better you will feel. Am I tired? Absolutely. Do I have a list of body parts that always hurt? I sure do. Are they life threatening? Nope. Am I letting the fibro win? Not in this lifetime. Have a happy day! M.E. Nesser is the co-owner of the Mark & M.E. Salon in Rochester, N.Y. Her twenty-year career in waxing has given her enough material to write The Happy Hoo-Ha Trilogy and A Promise of Passion, which are both available on Amazon.

Did you say, December? Where did 2016 go? It’s already that time of year again to show our loved ones we appreciate them by showering them with gifts for the holidays! Are you a last minute shopper or one who shops everywhere you go from the first of January until Christmas? I am the latter…the one who sees something in June that is the perfect gift so I buy it and safely store it until Christmas. The wrapping is what I typically procrastinate, not the purchasing. Nevertheless, on my recent mission trip to Haiti, I decided to make a conscious effort to have my Christmas list handy. Yes, I waited this year until November to do my Christmas shopping which is unheard of for this practical shopper as I typically have started and sometimes almost finished my shopping by the time the leaves fall. As difficult as it was for me to be patient and put the visions of long shopping lines aside, I was able to bless some remarkable people in the country of Haiti for their dedication and creativity by purchasing beautiful handmade jewelry, accessories, clothing, and coffee. As I strolled the dirt paths and makeshift roadways of Haiti, I became engrossed in their artisanship and pride they take in their work. Despite the lack of amenities and comforts found here in America, these men and women work sedulously without complaining. If they have to travel to work, the roads are dangerous. No, stop signs or street lights. No speed limits. Imagine the chaos! And the heat can be stifling. The only place I felt air conditioning was in three locations: a portion of the airport, a hotel room I stayed in for one night that was powered by a dieselfueled generator, and a restaurant near the airport that seemed to be a place in which Americans and visitors bought food that tasted like a weak attempt at “American” food. They work so hard but the paycheck for these sweet people is minimal. They may eventually earn enough to pay for a small, 5 foot by 10-foot wide concrete block house and food to sustain the family. Nothing about Haiti is lush and abundant,

except for the bananas and mangos! Despite the gorgeous blue ocean, fresh water is scarce to none. It’s hard to explain just how immensely different the Haitian culture is from “America the beautiful” or is it “America the beautiful because we are so spoiled?” In contrast, how many of us work in offices with air conditioning? Drive to work in a nice car on paved roads without the stress of lawlessness? Eat enough food on our lunch break to feed a Haitian family of 4? This is our country, gushing with financial blessings in which we could give back at least just a portion in return. I feel a sense of responsibility to invest my time, resources and money into those who work diligently to survive. I am privileged to do so, so I did. While in Haiti, I checked off my Christmas list one by one and in turn, provided for at least a few people’s livelihood. How have you given to give back this holiday season?

This incredible voice-activated device allows you to play music, manage your schedule, create shopping and to-do lists, automate your home, and well, you get the picture. There are currently three versions of Echo in the marketplace: the original Echo which comes with its own speaker, the Echo Tap which is a battery operated version of the Echo and the newest member of the family, and the Echo Dot which is about the size of a hockey puck because it comes with a small speaker.

If you are into home automation, this is where Alexa really excels. As I stated before, she will link to most popular thermostats: Honeywell, Nest, and Ecobee. Plus you can get “smart” plugs and switches for your home and you can ask Alexa to turn lights and appliances on and off. (because flipping a switch is so 1990’s). As a writer, I found that Alexa can be an invaluable tool. Looking for just the right word, just ask Alexa and she can provide it for you without ever leaving your document.

When the original Echo came out I read some of the articles on it and watched some videos and although I thought it was very cool, I felt that $179 was a lot of money for something that, let’s face it is not really a necessity. Enter the Echo Dot. Launched earlier this year, it is already in its second generation. At just $49 it was much easier on my budget. On Black Friday, the price dropped to $39, and now it was time to buy. The Echo Dot arrived at my doorstep this week and after a pretty simple setup process(download the app to your phone and connect it to your wifi), we were good to go. The app works in conjunction with Alexa, this is where you can enable “skills” for Alexa, and where your to-do and shopping lists are stored. Alexa can do a number of practical and useful things. I have it connected to my thermostat so that I can adjust the temperature just by asking. Sure we could get up and walk the 10 feet to the thermostat, but what fun would that be! Alexa can set timers and alarms just by asking too. One of my favorite features is managing my shopping list. If I run out of something I can just say “Alexa, add eggs to my grocery list” and immediately it’s there. It’s a great feature especially since you can add it as you are thinking about it rather than wait till you get to your phone or the list on the fridge (which I invariably leave home).

Need a definition? Alexa can provide that too. She’s also great for spelling, which makes my life easier because now my husband can ask her how to spell something rather bothering me all the time. Love listening to music? Alexa can link to Amazon Music, Pandora, and Spotify. Simply ask her for a specific, artist, genre or playlist and music will fill the room. You can also ask her to turn the volume up or down, skip a song or if you like it you can even purchase the song on the spot. If you enjoy cooking you can get recipes through Alexa as well. The are many useful cooking skills that can be found on The Food Network and Allrecipes sites just by asking Alexa to get them for you. She can also convert measurements for you like “how many cups in a pint” just in case you forgot

your 5th-grade math. As with most Amazon products, Alexa can easily make purchases through Amazon. In some cases, there are additional discounts offered if items are ordered through Alexa. Simply ask Alexa “What are your deals?” and she will give you a rundown of some special offers and ask you if you want to purchase them. If you are a Prime Member Alexa will always choose items that are eligible for Prime shipping. It’s a handy feature (and a great way to make money for Amazon), but it can be dangerous if you have children. One woman said that her three-year-old ordered $17 worth of jelly beans through Alexa. Needless to say, Amazon was very understanding about letting her return them. In fact, all items ordered through Alexa are eligible for free returns. You can set up a pin code for purchases so that your child isn’t ordering every Lego kit available on Amazon. So what is the final analysis? In my opinion, AI devices like Alexa are in their infancy. Although there are a lot of fun and gimmicky things you can do with it, it does have the potential to become a handy device to make our lives a little easier as evidenced by the other companies that are jumping on the bandwagon. Google has just launched Google Home and word is that Apple is working on Apple Home to enter the market as well. As more and more smart appliances enter the market, devices like the Echo will become increasingly more useful. Amazon has created the Amazon Skills Kit to allow outside developers to create additional skills for the software. This will allow Echo to become even more useful as time goes on. With the pricing discounts that Amazon offered for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it’s a good bet that there will be many of these devices given as gifts this year. The Dot was sold out when I ordered it and I had to wait a little longer to receive it. The Echo has a lot of fun features. You can play lots of games and gather lots of useless information which make it kind of “gimmicky”, but it also has a lot of useful features to help make your life a little more efficient. For now, this “geek” is a happy customer and I am looking forward to all the new ways for Alexa to make my life a little easier.

MENOPAUSE

moment

BY JAMES WOODS, M.D., AND ELIZABETH WARNER, M.D. BY MARK FORREST PATRICK, CDT VA CCMT

MENOPAUSE, METABOLISM, AND VISCERAL FAT ACCUMULATION Our bodies, anthropologically, function solely to reproduce in order to preserve our species. But reproduction requires adequate metabolic energy. Witness the increase in body fat as one enters puberty or the negative effect on fertility for patients with anorexia nervosa, for those engaging in strenuous exercise, or those subjected to famine and starvation. Yet, as our ability to reproduce ceases at the other end of the age spectrum, we experience a reduction in metabolism, redistribution of fat to our abdominal area and, thus, the cardiovascular and diabetic risks of metabolic syndrome. The key to these interactions resides in our hypothalamus where reproduction and metabolism are controlled. Reproduction is initiated by three small groups of neurons in our hypothalamus called the KNDy neurons (kisspeptin, neurokinin B, and dynorphin) pronounced “candy.” In the adolescent child, as puberty approaches, suppressor genes that have kept these neurons quiet since birth lose their inhibitory effect. These KNDy neurons, with direct connections to our gonadotrophinreleasing hormone (GnRH) neurons, stimulate the release of the gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH). GnRH, in turn, activates the pituitary to produce a pulsatile luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), both of which stimulate the ovaries to begin to produce cyclic estrogen and progesterone, and the reproductive cycle begins. These KNDy neurons, however, also play an important role in regulating metabolism by responding to feedback from peripheral hormones that are responsible for appetite and nutritional absorption. While more complex than stated here,

in brief, leptin released from our white fat and insulin from our pancreas decrease our appetite and tell us to eat less. In contrast, ghrelin, from our gut, increases our appetite, usually causing us to eat more. Evidence that our metabolism and reproductive function interact is demonstrated by the fact that caloric restriction leading to ghrelin secretion reduces pulsatile GnRH release from the gonadotrophin-releasing neurons, thereby impairing ovulation. Although metabolism and reproduction must work collaboratively, reproductive processes do not respond directly to metabolic cues. For example, GnRH neurons have no leptin or ghrelin receptors, and KNDy neurons have no ghrelin receptors. The higher order control of metabolism to support reproduction is believed to reside at the arcuate nucleus in the hypothalamus, which has access to circulating molecules outside the blood-brain barrier. It also has receptors for leptin, insulin, and ghrelin, and contains regulators of the KNDy and GnRH neurons. Connecting the dots, however, has left us with one question: “Why does visceral fat form in the months or years leading into menopause?” The initiating factor may be fluctuation and then the loss of ovarian estradiol with its antiinflammatory properties in the menopause transition, thus altering the immune characteristics of our intestinal bacteria and their control over nutritional absorption. Falling estradiol levels also produce alterations in KNDy neurons (now believed to be the origin of hot flashes) and could facilitate changes in how we metabolize our food. Evidence supporting this theory is found in breast cancer patients treated with aromatase

inhibitors who have lowered estrogen levels and both an increasing incidence of hot flashes and increasing abdominal obesity. A contrasting theory, supported by animal and clinical studies, indicates an association between higher androgen levels and visceral fat accumulation. Perhaps both low estrogen and relatively elevated androgen levels contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome phenotype in genetically predisposed perimenopausal women. Other hormones, like thyroid hormone and cortisol, obviously have some role in this process as well. Visceral fat cells, although only a small component of our overall body fat, accumulate non-esterified free fatty acids faster than subcutaneous fat cells. These visceral fat cells deliver free fatty acids (FFA) via the portal vein directly to our liver, thus contributing a higher proportion of overall hepatic FFA in individuals with greater visceral fat. The results are an increase in very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) and insulin resistance, hallmarks of type 2 diabetes and increased cardiovascular risk. The biologies of reproduction and of metabolism once thought of as silos, now seem more integrated. This observation raises new possibilities for novel treatments to prevent metabolic syndrome. Eating BY TRACY ECHEVERRI

with your HANDS So I’ve known the editors of Rochester Woman Magazine for many years and have taken part in numerous events for one reason or another but have never written an article for the magazine. When Kelly asked me if I would write In the Health and Fitness column I hesitated at first. Yes I live-I would say a healthy lifestyle but who am I to tell anyone how they should go about their life? Maybe or maybe not but I do know what worked for me. So why not spread some holiday cheer or I mean holiday tips? There’s a rolling stone song that came to my mind the instant I started writing this article. “You can’t always get what you want.” A lot of folks in the fitness business promote of course healthy eating and physical activity and tell you what foods to stay away from. Never eat this- only eat that. Blah blah blah. So during the holiday season where everything you shouldn’t eat is in front of you what do you do? STARVE? Irritate your family and only eat the salad saying “I’m watching what I eat” as everyone gasps and makes you feel like a total jerk. No, don’t do that. I have the solution. Eat everything. And yes you can get what you want! I live a healthy life and I eat well but when it comes to the holidays you are surrounded by every bad food you could possibly consume. So instead of telling yourself you cannot eat anything I would recommend portion control. Not only during the holidays but every day of your life. Then you can still eat things you like but in moderation and you won’t have

the guilt because you’re living in balance. I think people have this mindset that they want to get in shape and they want to lose weight and that they never will be able to eat anything bad again. “It’s lettuce and carrots for me! I can never have a glass of wine and I can never ever have that cheesecake for the rest of my life if I want to be slim.” That actually is how you gain more weight and yo-yo from diet to diet-counting points and skipping all carbs and never eating sugar for “20 days.” My thought is, death to the diet and birth to the lifestyle. You need to find a happy medium where you can enjoy the treats and still live a healthy lifestyle. You cannot be on a diet your whole life and that’s why they don’t work so learning how to eat right is the key to being healthier and happier with your shape. So to tell you a little bit about myself- I lost around 50 pounds a couple years ago because I decided I did not like how I looked. I didn’t like how I felt and I was not in a good place and I knew it. I drank too much. I ate like crap and I wasn’t being physically active. I was unhappy inside and out and I think a lot of people could relate which is why you then eat more and drink more and it’s just a domino effect. So one day I said enough! I started going to the gym. I cut back on drinking. I started eating healthier and now I am the happiest I have been my whole life. It wasn’t rocket science my friends but, I do know it’s hard to get started and begin a journey such as that when maybe not others in your circle want to do the same or your spouse isn’t interested

in getting healthier or you think you’re not even ready I get it. So back to portion control. I’m not asking you to buy certain containers or go on a detailed diet using specific products. I want you to use your hands. When eating any vegetables I would say eat as much as you want. A textbook would say two open hands full of vegetables is a great portion. Then when you’re eating meat choose a piece that is roughly the size of your palm. When choosing fruit, pasta, potatoes or any other carbs and starches, use a portion the size of your fist. Lastly with dessert; pie or cake slices measure out to be the size of two fingers and ice cream a half of a fist! Some of this may vary if you were to look online but ultimately it’s a guide. We cannot be measuring out our food at a restaurant or at a friend’s house using measuring cups. Or at least I know I won’t. When at a restaurant measure out the sizes and only eat that much and bring the rest home for a nice lunch the next day! So during the holiday time don’t stress over the food. Moderation is the key to a healthy life. You can eat cake and you can also enjoy a good steak with a smooth glass of red wine but you just can’t have it every day. Writer Virginia Woolf once said, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” Virginia maybe wasn’t talking about eating healthy but that quote seems clear as day to me. Happy Holidays!! Enjoy!

SNAP OUT OF

IT!

BY MARGARET MADIGAN

HOLIDAYS...A time of Hope, Peace

Happy Holidays, folks! The holidays are a time of hopes, dreams, and wishes. So I think it only fitting that I tell you about a wish of mine that came true. I have now started a radio show and podcast entitled “You’re Soaking in It with Madge”. It airs every Wednesday night at 7:00pm on WXIR 100.9fm and is available online as a podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, and SoundCloud at https://soundcloud.com/ madgemadigan. It’s a talk show filled with humor and insight, pretty much like I attempt here in my column. I’m so thrilled because I was in radio many years ago and I went to college for broadcasting as well. It’s always something I loved but never could do it the way I wanted to. Now with new technology and the invention of podcasts, I can do it like Frank said, “My Way”. So tune in and check it out! I thought it would be fitting to revisit an excerpt from a column I wrote a couple years ago on “How to Make the Holidays Not Suck”. I think we need to be reminded every once in a while that holidays are not a competition. So here is a bit of advice… “So back to the Christmas. Enough already! Enough with the buying and the wrapping, and the baking, and the decorating and the parties… no, wait, the parties can stay. It’s one thing if you really love this stuff, then do it, just don’t be a martyr all over the place about it. Trust me, nobody likes a martyr. You know how to survive these holidays?

Just chillax. What gets done, will get done. No one will notice that you forgot to put out your Wayne Newton dressed as Santa statuette. No one will notice that you only made a batch of sugar cookies and not peanut butter cookies. The kids won’t care if you wrapped their stocking stuffers or not. Just try to enjoy the spirit of Christmas, family, and friends. (yes, even if you hate your family)

And speaking of that… what if you are thrust into a situation where you have to be with people you don’t particularly care for, nay even hate? Suck it up and deal. Be nice and civil. Remember you’re not the only person in the room. I know you have your pride but why ruin everyone else’s holiday as well as yours? Don’t be antagonistic, stay away from touchy subjects and hold your tongue if you are provoked. That will beat the hell out of having to post bail on Christmas Eve for aggravated assault. I know some women have fantasies about exacting revenge on their mother-in-law that might look like Alexis and Krystle from Dynasty, rolling around slapping and ripping out shoulder pads. But most of the time those things end up looking like Snookie and Angela pulling out weaves on Jersey Shore with their skirt over their head showing their butt in a thong. Not pretty. Next thing you know you’re on an episode of Cops. As matter of fact, even if you like the people you will be spending the holiday with, just stay away from controversial topics all together that might start arguments – religion, politics, sex, and Grandma’s will.

Back to the overdoing it and not being a competition with every other parent or homemaker in town… You might say, “What about the kids? It’s important for the kids.” Guess what? The kids will get over it; they don’t need every gift under the sun or to live in a winter wonderland every day of the holidays. I believe you might be teaching your kids a far more valuable lesson in life if they don’t get everything they want this year. I kid you not, there were years when things were rough being a single parent and my kids got construction paper or earrings or mittens from the Dollar Store. I cried and cried. Yes, I felt terrible that I couldn’t give my children everything I wanted to, but my children have learned that life isn’t fair and to be thankful for what they do get. I’d like to think I won’t be raising a bunch of spoiled ingrates. However, as a loving Mother, I wish I had the means to raise spoiled ingrates just so they could have nice things, but I realize the life lesson and not having ingrates is better and will last a lifetime, unlike an iPad or Beats by Dre.

Hey, didn’t that Christmas angel say, “Peace on Earth, goodwill toward men”? THAT’s what it’s about! Please everyone, spread peace and good will to others, and accept peace yourself. That’s really the key, peace within yourself; it feels wonderful and it’s uncanny how it spreads to others. Take a deep breath and relish the simple joys. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Festivus, Happy Kwanza to all and to all a good night! And most importantly… Peace!”
