Men’s golf enjoys national spotlight Men’s golf at JALC is one of the premier programs in the country. The Volunteers have won two NJCAA National championships, 2009 and 2011. They also have two runner-up finishes in 2004 and 2010. Two Volunteers have claimed national medalist honors, Marcelo Rozo (2010) and Filip Timmerman (2011). Logan has qualified for 12 consecutive appearances in the NJCAA National Tournament and never finished lower than eighth place. Last year, the team placed third at Nationals. The Vols are also the reigning Great Rivers Athletic Conference and Region 24 Tournament champions, earning that distinction 10 of the past 12 years. Logan has produced nine of the last 10 individual Region 24 Tournament medalists, and 15 Volunteers have earned All-American honors, including current players Steve Souchek and Tucker Guisewite. Last year, the Vols were named an Academic Spring Team of the Year by the NJCAA, and two players were selected NJCAA Academic All-Americans. Tom Ferris became the head coach for Logan’s men’s golf team in 1999, and he has turned the program into a perennial national contender. He has been named Region 24 Coach of the Year 10 times and earned National Coach of the Year honors in 2011. Before taking over the men’s program, he coached the College’s women’s golf team when it was created in 1998. The Lady Vols won the Region 24 Tournament title in 1998 and qualified for nationals both years that he was at the helm. In addition to his coaching duties, Ferris serves as the Athletic Department’s network coordinator. He has been providing play-by-play and color commentary for Logan basketball games since they began airing on the radio. A key voice on the Volunteer Network, he was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as a broadcaster. He is a 1962 graduate of Wichita State University where he played football and baseball. The father of three, he and his wife, Kay, reside in Marion.
