MOTIVATION LETTER My relationship with architecture first appeared from a profound connection with drawing during my life. In my early memories, I remember having this strong interest towards representing things, interpreting the reality around me and expressing it, sometimes through drawings or illustrations, sometimes through objects. I started to realize then that ‘creating things’ really captivated my interest, even though I had the smallest notion of what that could actually mean. The concern towards building things (that often looked likewise inceptive models) and combining them with other things that fit well together, or that could be arranged to compose something else, became a great passion to me. During the academic career, I had started to have this understanding that I would not be an architect without the notion of drawing, or without a piece of paper in my hands, or without having contact with people, or even without music. I realized that having an open mind to analyze and interpret what surrounds me and trying to understand the environment and nature - in which we live and are a part of, and which allow us to be who we are -, I believe to be important elements when it comes to improve architectural skills. To me, I find this entire process a fundamental part of the architectural creation itself. Furthermore, I think architecture implies the ability to dialogue with urban landscape and environment. Both subjects (architecture and urbanism) should walk together in order to achieve a fully, or at least, a better comprehension of Architecture in our time. Research, interpretation, investigation, and creativity linked to the acquaintance of the contemporary issues of our cities and buildings, and why they are how they are now..., I consider being keys for a better use, understanding and implementation of the new techniques and technologies that are available today. That may allow us, architects, to build better places and buildings, and to achieve a sustainable future for our cities.

INDEPENDENT PROJECTS PROJECT: Baptist Church - IEB PLACE: Recife, Brazil. 2011 PROJECT DIRECTORS: André Figueirêdo, Eduardo Kenji, Francisco Azevedo, Ludmila Campos and Roberta Faria Neves The Baptist Church IEB is an under commission project by the Atelier da Imagem e do Espaço. Besides the church itself, the project includes an administrative block, a kindergarten, a library, a music studio, a nursery, some playgrounds, a subterranean car parking and a school for the regular visitors and participants of the church. The main challenge of this project was to articulate all parts of the architecture program in the 864m² available terrain. Since it was not posible to create more than 6 paviments according to the current urban legislation of this particular district, it was decided to use as much of the terrain area as posible to create large areas of roof gardens that could dialogue with the main gardens at the sides areas of the building. The church itself is located at the floorplan with 450 seats and also has a galery with more 300 seats at an upper level (7,15m). About the formal aspects of the church, it has an squared form in which the entrance path that leads to the altar, creates a diagonal line throught the nave. The building is 6 paviments tall and has 1 subterranean paviment too.

INDEPENDENT PROJECTS PROJECT: Project under commission for a stores and office building PLACE: Camaragibe, Brazil. 2012 PROJECT DIRECTORS: André Figueirêdo, Eduardo Kenji , Francisco Azevedo, Ludmila Campos and Roberta Faria Neves Aldeia is a district of Camaragibe, a satellite town near Pernambuco’s capital Recife, that has one of the most important atlantic forest reservation areas, which are under strict preservation laws. The site of the building faces the biggest street of Aldeia, the one that connects the whole district. The Cajazeira Business Emporium is an architectural project by me and and the Atelier da Imagem e do Espaço. The foundation of this project is to integrate nature and the big leafy trees located in the building site. The name we decided do give to this project (Cajazeira) is after the biggest tree in the terrain, which has been incorporated to the architectural concept. The main conceptual idea of the project is to create an interior opened plaza which houses the cajazeira tree and connects the building to the exterior landscape. It creates a permeable space that articulates the interior and the outside environment of the building, in a way to naturally generate an inviting place to have a coffee and relax while enjoying the beautiful nature that surrounds it.

INDEPENDENT PROJECTS PROJECT: Project under commission of weekend flats “Porto do Sol Beach Flat”. PLACE: Porto de Galinhas Beach, Ipojuca (Brazil). 2011 PROJECT DIRECTORS: André Figueirêdo, Eduardo Kenji , Francisco Azevedo, Ludmila Campos and Roberta Faria Neves Porto de Galinhas is a beach at the south coast of Pernambuco, at Ipojuca town. The project is a 4 pavements building with 34 flats, including 4 different types of apartments. The project also contemplates a swimming pool, a conference room, a restaurant, a kitchen, a car parking and hotel services such as 24 hours reception and administration. At the underground pavement there are 34 car parkings and 34 deposits, one for each flat. The groundfloor have 8 flats at the same level as there is the pool, the conference room, the restaurant and the pool deck. The first 2 pavements have both 13 flats. The 3rd pavement have bigger flats, there are only 9 flats all with a mezzanine. The idea of creating different sizes of flats was a request from the client, that asked for a project that could provide diversity for the users.

PROJECT: Project Final Thesis “Moradia Rio Branco + Rua da Guia: anteprojeto para edifício multifamiliar misto no Bairro do Recife”. Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. PLACE: Bairro do Recife, Recife. (Brazil). 2011 PROJECT DIRECTOR: Roberta Faria Neves PROJECT TUTOR: Architect and Professor Antenor Vieira de Melo This project is an intervention in the oldest district of Recife, Barrio do Recife, at Recife’s Old town. This intervention is located in a historical area protected by Photo of the site of the project. Roberta Faria Neves, 2011. the federal patrimony institute (IPHAN, Brazil). It proposes a building with mixed uses, such as residencial, comercial and for services in general. The chosen allotment for the project is an empty and abandoned allotment that has no constructions since the 1950’s decade, after the demolition of the primary eclectic building. It is part of a urban tissue that was fully renovated in the sanitarian urban renewal from the early twenty’s century (1910-1920) that changed completely the old urban district desing and also its buildings, in order to become an eclectic one. Before the eclectic renewal, the Barrio do Recife was mainly a portuary waterfront district. The urban diagnostics before the project was lead by Jane Jacob’s “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” (1961) and by Kevin Lynch’s “The image of the city” (1960). The building proposed afterwords is an intent to show the results carried by this previous diagnostic. The formal aspects of the building respect the urban environment that surrounds it, such as the buildings height next to the proposed one, and other architectural and urban particularities of the site. Also the project is in agreement with the legislation that was then aplied to this district of the city. The project is influenced by the very rich modern architecture of Recife (19401970), such as the work of architects Delfim Amorim and Acácio Gil Borsoi, and also by the gardens of Roberto Burle Marx. The project attempts to incorporate the legacy of this architects and a series of architecture articles by Lucio Costa about brazilian modern architecture. So, in the end, the project is an intent to create a revival of this very important moment of Brazilian architecture and of icons of Recife’s architecture too, all incorporated to the building located at the most ‘recifense’ district, a district that carries with itself the identity and the Facade study by Lucio Costa. COSTA, Lucio. Documentação necessária, Revista do Serviço do Patrimonio Historico e Artístico Nacional, N. 1, 1937. spirit of the entire city.

Rooftop with a common area for the residents and users of the building inspired by many of the modern gardens of Burle Marx, in special the one from Gustavo Capanema’s building by Lucio Costa, Le Corbusiser and Oscar Niemeyer.

Tile panel design by Roberta Faria Neves, based on elements from Brazil’s modern architecture. The panel appears on the principal facade of the building. The leaked elements of the balconies have also this same appeal.

PROJECT: Interiors and media spaces for Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico PLACE: Mexico City, Mexico (2015). PROJECT DIRECTORS: David Xirau, Teia Roures, Francesc Masip The biggest challenge in this project was to create different types of spaces, prototypes and mobiles that would be used for audio visual experiences at various rooms of the refered museum. I was part of a work group of over 7 profesionals of different areas (designers, software engeneers, architects...) in which every one of us had to acomplish an especific task. Besides me, there was two other architects that worked in this project. The interdisciplinar work concept of this project was essencial to achieve a very complete result, that would start from the building structures to the tipografy or the final touches of each equipment and installation of the museum.

PROJECT: Virtual Art PLACE: Barcelona, Spain (2015). PROJECT DIRECTORS: David Xirau, Marta Gimeno, Sergi Segas This project is a prototype of a museum instalation that would be able to fit in different kinds of exhibitions. It was thought to be a very light metalic structure to support small box chambers containing each one a big screen. To do so, we projected four different ideas before getting to two final prototypes, both very different in therms of the audio visual experience each one is to provide. Next I gattered some images of the creative process:

PROJECT: Cascina Merlata Educational Institute PLACE: Milan, Italy (2013) PROJECT DIRECTORS: Benedetta Tagliabue, Joan Callís and Valentina Noris The Cascina Merlata Educational Institute is a project for a contest by invitation in which the architectural office EMBT Miralles Tagliabue was one of the studios worldwide invited to participate. I worked in this project as a special colaborator while I was an intern of the refered studio performing taks such as model building, collages, autocad drawing, 3D modeling and image editing. The location is at the country side of Milan, in the region known as Cascina Merlata. The school project takes place in an allotment where used to be an obsolete factory and furnace (the latter is still there), which is part of a bigger project lead by Milan’s City Hall. The intervention fits with respect to the ancient Water Furnace, which integrates into the project by transforming the galleries in interior walls, corridors and exhibition spaces. The project was born from the idea to pay homage to the ancient quercieto of Merlata, shown in the map of Claricio 1659, by creating a compact building like a theatrical backdrop of trees, shielding the view at the Cemetery, from which the leaves that fall to the ground disperse in the Park. The institution will host: a kindergarten consisting of 200 children; elementary school for 375 students, and 225 middle school students and a fitness facility that will host the game of volleyball and basketball. As part of the creative process adopted by the Studio, collages and paper models are the first step for creating the project’s conceptual ideas.

PROJECT: The Green Tower of Xiamen PLACE: Xiamen, China (2013) PROJECT DIRECTORS: Benedetta Tagliabue and Joan Callís This is a 95m tall building designed to be a reference as architectural quality. The EMBT Studio propose high standard apartments for the upper floors and the Green Architecture Institute for the Podium. I have worked in this project as a special colaborator while I was an intern of the refered studio performing taks such as model building, collages, autocad drawing, 3D modeling and image editing. This building is an Information centre for the promotion of sustainable architecture and construction to offer information for the interested public, but also the possibility for specialized firms in the field to expose their products, always related to the sustainability. The building itself will be a vivid exhibition for environmental friendly architecture where you can see “on work” all these strategies applied in day by day life, and it can be visited by the public. It would be a pioneer centre of these characteristics in China. The main credit categories take into account: the impact of building on ecosystems, innovative strategies for building energy performance, sustainable building materials, reducing waste, daylight, views and indoor air quality. LEED CERTIFICATIONS: SILVER, GOLD AND PLATINUM. As said before, as part of the creative process adopted by the Studio, collages and paper models are the first step for creating the project’s conceptual ideas.

About the concept of the Podium at the bottom of the building: The spaces of the Podium are organized around a very special three-dimensional element that cross the building from up to down and conducts light through the building until the ground floor, bringing subtle reflexes of the pool’s water into the interior with its diamondlike cut faces. The façade of the podium is transparent but there is an organic-shaped element that recalls the dragon’s skin. This element can be observed from the exterior but also from the interior, like a giant animal that just passed by the window. This element also accompanies all the main spaces, and it can be partially translucent, like a screen, playing his part in the effects of the interior space.

PROJECT: Redevelopment of Viale Rinaldo Piaggio in Pontedera PLACE: Pontedera, Italia (2013) PROJECT DIRECTORS: Benedetta Tagliabue and Salvador Gilabert The redevelopment of the Viale Rinaldo Piaggio in Pondera was one of three focus proposed project by the municipality for the “Innovation Park in Pontedera,” new urban location and access road to the city, and through the redevelopment at urban planning - the environmental area would create a place by the strong identification, the merger between history, production, culture, and science: a park that tied the functions established foresaw. The urban context here is part of the avenue Piaggio is strongly influenced by presence of the headquarters of the Piaggio, local and excellence, today as decades ago, heart dynamic of the city. This urban artery represents the backbone, on it engage the main entrance to the factory. This axis, which extends from east to west and parallel to the headquarters station, the time, is highly congested by the presence of numerous cars workers and employees in the company who pass and stop it. Problematic situation despite its sides there are multiple spaces intended for stop. In response to this problem the municipality intends to build a parking that will have multi-entry and exit right on that avenue. Along the avenue are other points of interest of the city panorama schools, research centers, cultural centers and commercial activities, which at the moment are isolated and not interconnected. The guiding principles of the concept were born from the city’s history, from the rivers, from trade and the industry. People, workers, furnaces and pasta. The serial production of mechanical components, the economic boom that brings glory and wealth. Thoughts and forms are mixed, architecture comes to life. Forms and materials of the components conquer space, we shed along the avenue: they same rise, define it, wrap it up, form and function come together. If the city and attracts users: guided and welcomed in this scenic backdrop materials and modern lines and rievocatrici: a look to the future, remembering the past.
