Arts

Enriching Life By Gail Tansill Lambert

W

Through Visual Arts

e are all visual artists when we pause to look at an icicle glistening in the sunlight or a rosy-cheeked child asleep on his grandmother’s lap. There is also the desire to leave one’s mark on the material world -- the heart carved into the bark of the biggest oak tree announcing “Michael loves Amy.” And the sand castles on the beach encircled by multiple moats and walls forbidding in vain the incoming tide’s entry with its power of total erasure.

graduate Annie Dillard gives credit to her early love of art for her ability to paint pictures with words.

Whether endowed with a special talent for creating works of art that appeal to others or not, the pursuit of a form of art such as painting or drawing brings with it life-long pleasure that increases with experience and effort. Charlotte Hanks, long-time teacher of watercolor and drawing at the Brambleton Center, is taking the year off following surgery, but the vitality in her voice is evident when the subject turns to art. A life-long lover of art, she used it in every facet of teaching elementary school in the Roanoke City Public Schools from drawing leaves and cell structure for science to creative projects for social studies and English instruction. “Art is not something to add on,” she says, “but is an essential part of education where the use of art actually increases intelligence.”

Others have gone on to a second career selling their art in galleries that have sprung up in downtown Roanoke near the Taubman Art Museum as well as outlying areas. Art also enriches the lives of people who surround themselves with art created by others, using paintings on the wall to fill empty space with images that may provoke a sense of wonder or of peace. One such home bears the work of young children hung in frames on the walls; the artists are now young people putting those creative sparks into academic endeavors seemingly far removed from those bold and colorful free-flowing shapes and lines done in elementary school.

A high school foreign language teacher concurs, encouraging her students to draw pictures of words they intend to master. Visual learners profit from the challenge of communicating ideas by means of shapes and colors in addition to the written word. In her autobiography, Pulitzer Prize-winning Hollins

10

Leslie Wellner paints a still life at the Brambleton Center

Hanks’ interest in teaching watercolor includes the joy of camaraderie with her students as they work together to meet artistic challenges. Apart from the Brambleton Center, former students get together to recreate the Brambleton Center atmosphere with scheduled work sessions, peer input, and critiques.

Formal art instruction was always a luxury mainly enjoyed by the wealthy elite. Such is not the case in the Roanoke Valley, thanks in part to the facilities and wonderful teachers at the Brambleton Center, where students’ lives are invariably touched by the experience of creating art in a setting that expands imaginations and affects ways of seeing things with fresh eyes. Give art a chance to enrich your life!

Oil Painting in the Grisaille Technique

This class shows the student how to produce realistic subject matter using a modification of an old master’s technique known as grisaille (pronounced griss - sal) painting. This style of painting utilizes a dry monochrome underpainting on a toned canvas. The student has more control in this type of painting due to the fact that in the underpainting stage, the important element of light/ shadow is the sole focus, making the final step of adding color more simplified. Fee includes all supplies except brushes and palette knife. Details given at registration. Instructor: Ed Gowen. Ages

Extend the Life

of Your Computer

Proper maintenance helps your computer stay healthy!

By Gary Foutz

Y

ou clean your living room, clean your car and occasionally even clean out the garage. But when was the last time you cleaned your computer? By that I mean getting rid of the temporary internet files along with cookies and history. Keeping your computer clean is important both to enhance safety and security of your personal documents and to extend the lifespan of your PC. Experts recommend that you “defrag” your computer and run a scan disk at least once a month. Also, run an Anti Spyware program monthly to keep your computer safe. One of the best is Spybot Search & Destroy. Anti virus programs like these need to be run regularly but be aware that some of these programs are so good that they may slow your computer down. Never run two anti virus programs at the same time because they will fight against each other, making both less effective and possibly allowing a virus to slip through. Security from viruses and other attacks on your personal information is critically important in your home office. Microsoft founder Bill Gates said, “Security is, I would say, our top priority because for all the exciting things you will be able to do with computers - organizing your lives, staying in touch with people, being creative - if we don’t solve these security problems, then people will hold back.” A good rule of thumb is to stay off of web sites that you do not trust. Google has checked out many web sites and put a check mark on the ones they have found to be safe. Also the Google tool bar is good because it has a pop up blocker that keeps you from having to deal with a lot of advertisements. Another rule of thumb is never open pop ups if you do not know who it is. Many ads are methods of delivering viruses to your computer. It is good to read up on the signs and symptoms of viruses.

16

Just like cleaning your home, your computer needs care. Every six months you need to take the side off of your computer and spray well with a can of compressed air. Remember to also spray the CD ROM and DVD drawers along with the keyboard. Keeping dust out of your computer keeps the components from getting hot. Periodically wipe the bottom of your mouse and your pad with a little alcohol. Another little hint for protecting your computer is to be aware of thunderstorms. Do not use your computer during electrical storms and do not trust a power strip to protect your computer. You can invest in an expensive surge protector or just unplug your computer from its power source to be safe. Want to know more about computer operation and maintenance? Sign up for one of several basic computer classes offered by Roanoke County Parks. Your computer will be glad you did!

Did you Know

life

Are you really comparing apples to apples? When looking for a funeral home, some funeral services promise very low rates and compare their base price to ours. But, what they fail to mention is that our base price includes an organist, a lead car, death certificate courier service, hairdresser and a number of other services. At Oakey’s, we consider these items standard in providing the exceptional service that is synonymous with the Oakey’s name. Oakey’s has been here for over 100 years because we are dedicated to the families we serve.

Safety First!

High Standards Save Lives

G

reen Ridge Recreation Center aims to provide high quality programs and services to the Roanoke community. From the day we opened our doors over one year ago, the aquatics area at Green Ridge has been a part of the nation’s most rigorous safety programs to ensure that our members and guests are guaranteed a safe and enjoyable experience when visiting both our indoor and outdoor water parks. Aquatics may seem from the outside as its own entity here at Green Ridge with its own staff, rules, and schedule, but it is much more than that. The aquatics management at Green Ridge follows the lifeguarding standards from Ellis and Associates International Lifeguard Training Program. Back in the 1980’s, a man by the name of Jeff Ellis realized that water parks and other aquatic environments needed a comprehensive safety program based on their specific needs, which differ from those of a traditional rectangular aquatic space. He created the National Pool & Waterpark Lifeguard Training course as well as a risk management program. The staff and associates of Ellis come from a variety of backgrounds ranging from physical education, recreation, education, psychology, para-medicine, and law. This unique group of individuals has created a safety program which now sets the standard for the industry worldwide. Currently, Ellis & Associates is being used in 42 states and 10 countries. The Ellis method is outcome based, and focuses on strict training and safety standards. According to Ellis, “We are proactive and more interested in spending our time finding and identifying a problem before it becomes catastrophic. We do not want to wind up in a situation where we’re recovering a body.”

The requirements set by Ellis nurture a culture of safety throughout the aquatics team, and create a sense of which cannot be matched by any other aquatic safety program. The Ellis standards keep staff on their toes while working and holds each individual accountable for their actions while on duty here at Green Ridge. What does this mean for you as our member and guest? It means that whenever you enter our aquatic facilities here at Green Ridge, you will be entering not only a fun and enjoyable family environment, but a place where safety is our main objective. Each of our lifeguards and managers have taken extensive training courses and have ongoing bi-monthly training on site to review and practice lifesaving skills. Member Cindy Huber has been visiting the pool for over a month, and says “I’ve never been anywhere with such attentive lifeguards. They rotate frequently and there are always so many of them watching the pool.” The lifeguards must maintain very high standards to retain their Ellis certification. For our guests, that means they are not always able to take the time to chat and answer your questions in great detail. Green Ridge Recreation Center has however, created a Guest Services table which is always staffed by a Head Lifeguard. Visitors can pick up US Coast Guard approved life jackets here to use while they’re here. The Head Lifeguards are not only on deck as backup in the event of an emergency, but they are constantly checking the pool chemicals for your safety and they are always able to answer any questions you may have regarding aquatics. As we enter our second year of operation, the aquatics staff at Green Ridge will continue to put safety first through high lifeguarding standards.

Green Ridge Recreation Center follows the guidelines of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim, Preschool and Parent-Child swimming lesson programs. Red Cross standards help us maintain the quality, consistency and credibility of our Aquatics Program. Our facility provides a safe and fun learning environment utilizing certified water safety instructors. Each level is a progression through basic swimming skills and water safety. Students must be able to follow directions and to take turns in order to participate in group lessons. Classes may be offered as combination classes and/or cancelled due to lack of enrollment.

Y

our body mass index (BMI) is an assessment of your weight in connection to your height. This figure classifies your weight as underweight, normal, overweight or obese. To calculate your BMI, divide your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared, then multiply that figure by 704.5. There are many BMI calculators on the web that can help you do the math. In general, a BMI between 25 and 30 is considered overweight. A BMI of 30 or greater indicates obesity.

Five Steps

To a Healthy Weight

I

t seems like everyone is bombarded with media images and advertisements promising a quick, easy way to lose weight. You may be tempted by ads with slogans such as “Lose 20 pounds in two weeks with this product” or “This supplement will give you the perfect body.” In many cases, the products promoted are ineffective and could be harmful to your health. Diet trends come and go, but one strategy for reaching a healthy weight has remained tried and true: adopting a lifestyle that includes a nutritious, balanced diet and regular exercise.

3

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, approximately 66% of American adults are either overweight or obese. A combination of genetics, poor diet and a lack of physical activity can cause many adults to gain extra pounds. If you’re unhappy with your weight and want to improve your lifestyle, now is the time to take action. You can help ward off certain weightrelated complications, including high blood pressure and diabetes, by taking measures to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. The following are five steps for reaching your goals.

4

1

Settle on a number. Your healthcare professional can determine a healthy weight for you. This number may not be your ideal weight, but it can help you establish sensible goals. For many adults, the effort needed to lose those extra pounds is not extreme. However, with any weight-loss program, it’s important to focus on long-term goals rather than overexerting your body by exercising strenuously, eating too little or losing weight rapidly.

2

Keep portions in check. It’s a common assumption that to lose weight you need to say goodbye to your favorite foods. The truth is that you can still eat a variety of foods, but in moderation. To lose weight, you may need to reduce portion sizes and increase physical fitness to burn calories.

Stay on the go. An active lifestyle – one that includes a consistent exercise program – can help shed extra pounds. Exercising regularly may also reduce the risk of certain diseases and cancers. If you haven’t exercised before, a fitness professional can help you establish a routine that fits your interests.

Wellness

Provided by:

Green Ridge member Bill Jones has lost over 100 pounds with the help of personal trainers, diet and exercise.

Watch out for diet-busters. Certain foods and drinks, such as processed baked goods, soft drinks and fried foods, are loaded with unhealthy calories. If you’re craving a bag of cookies or potato chips, try reaching for fresh fruit and vegetables, unbuttered popcorn or whole-grain crackers instead.

5

Once you achieve a healthy weight, develop a system to maintain it. Your healthcare professional can help you create a plan for eating right, exercising and keeping the weight off. Maintaining a healthy weight is highly important because fat is the number one influence on risk of cancer: the more fat, the higher the risk. For more information about losing weight the healthy way, call Carilion at 266-6000 or 800-422-842.

T’ai Chi

T’ai Chi Chaun can be described as an exercise consisting of slow, relaxed movements that help us develop internal and external balance and harmony. The moves are practiced in a slow controlled fashion that builds strength as well as balance. T’ai Chi Chaun requires mindful concentration similar to meditation. The slow rhythmic movements relax the body and clear the mind. The movements are done with a feeling of buoyancy and lightness as if swimming in air. Youth Sports By Travis Wells Sports Anchor

I

Life Lessons

t’s often been said that sports are a great metaphor for life. Some might disagree, but I am a firm believer in that. Youth sports programs are more popular than ever, despite the video game age that we live in.

Having said that, exercise is probably the biggest benefit of youth recreation. Kids need to stay active and get enough physical activity to stay healthy. Plus, it helps to develop healthy exercise habits later in life. Because, as we all know, it becomes tougher and tougher to stay fit, the older we get. Socially, youth sports are a great way to promote interaction and making new friends. Unfortunately, there is a myth out there that you have to actually be good at a sport to make friends with others on the team. That’s simply untrue. As long as kids are enjoying themselves and supporting their teammates, that is what it’s all about.

Sports also teach us how to fight through adversity and how to lose. Let’s face it, no one likes to lose. That is a fact of life. It’s not about winning, it’s about trying hard, doing the best you

Roanoke County Parks, Recreation & Tourism offers youth athletics programs in cooperation with local Recreation Clubs. Youth Athletic participants must sign up through the local Recreation Club that serves the child’s area determined by their elementary school. If you have questions about which Recreation Club serves your school area, or if you need more information about various sports offered by each Recreation Club, please contact us at 387-6078 or visit www.roanokecountyva.gov/recclubs. Participants must be a Roanoke County resident or attend Roanoke County Public Schools to be eligible, and must play in their age bracket. Each club will have cut-off dates for sign-ups, so sign-up EARLY!

can and having fun. Those are all ideals that even as adults we lose sight of too readily. As a parent whose kids are just now starting to play rec league sports, I am obviously excited, but also know that there is a fine line between encouraging them and pushing them too hard. The odds of making it as a professional athlete are about 1 in 20 thousand. The odds of playing a sport in college are only slightly better. Yet, for some parents, perception and reality are worlds apart, and that’s unfortunate. We need to let our kids be kids and not force anything upon them. Finding that rec sport that you love can carry through to your adult life, building friendships, interests, and a lifestyle of activity that keeps you young and involved. Whether it be running, tennis, lifting, playing golf or just walking the neighborhood, many of life’s lessons can be traced back to that first rec sport you played.

Rec programs also teach youngsters how to be a part of a team, working towards a common goal. Reaching that goal helps to build self esteem and helps kids realize the importance of working hard. You probably take part in some sort of teamwork everyday, whether it’s within your family, dividing up chores, at school, or at your workplace. It’s amazing what a group can accomplish, that an individual would never come close to. I like the adage that “Teamwork makes the dream work.” And don’t forget, “There is no ‘I’ in ‘team’.” Being a part of a team teaches kids to respect each other and their coaches.

It’s not about winning, it’s about teamwork.

Walking Outside

By 2014, walk by greenway from Vinton to Green Hill

By Janet Scheid and Pete Eshelman

A Greenway Update

E

Outdoors

very day, we hear that Americans are becoming more obese; now the number of obese individuals exceeds one in four people. The average American male has gained 17.1 pounds (20.2 in Virginia) and the average American female has added 15.4 pounds (16.7 in Virginia) since 1988. One of the best ways to get active again is to get in step with a walking routine. Did you know the recommended guideline, according to health care professionals, is to walk 10,000 steps a day? With an average stride length of about 2.5 feet, that’s about five miles a day. Many Americans just aren’t getting in all those steps every day. Fortunately, Roanoke County and government partners throughout the valley are making it easier to find a place to walk, as the Roanoke River Greenway continues to be expanded. When complete, the greenway will be a 31-mile bicycle and pedestrian trail through the entire Roanoke Valley connecting western Roanoke County, the Cities of Roanoke and Salem and the Town of Vinton. Currently over 7 miles of the Roanoke River Greenway are completed and heavily used by citizens of all walks of life. The greenway will provide linkages to neighborhoods, industrial facilities, commercial areas, parks, schools and other destinations. In addition to recreational and transportation benefits, the greenway provides the opportunity to conserve trees, protect riparian buffers and provide wildlife habitat.

36

This is an exciting time for the Roanoke County greenway program. The Roanoke River Greenway in Green Hill Park is slightly less than one mile in length but is a very popular attraction for walkers, joggers and bicyclists. Since it’s opening in the fall of 2008, this greenway has hosted several races including the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in 2010 and the Race for Open Space in 2009 and 2010. The County will soon be starting the public input process for a proposed 1.5 mile greenway along the Roanoke River, connecting the Green Hill Park section to another section of greenway being completed in Salem. The County is fortunate to have almost $3.5 million dollars in funding for the engineering, design and construction of this project. With the completion of this section, anticipated in 2014, and the completion of a section in Salem between Mill Lane and the Moyer Complex in 2011, we are anticipating a continuous greenway between Green Hill Park in western Roanoke County and Rotary Park off Rt. 419 near the Roanoke City line. In addition, the County has just submitted a grant application for additional funding for the eastern section of the Roanoke River Greenway from the Waste Water Treatment Plant to the Blue Ridge Parkway. This greenway section, 2.7 miles in length, will provide access to some of the most beautiful scenery along the Roanoke River. Fast, Easy, Secure. Online registration makes it easy!

South Dakota

Come face to face with history on an all-inclusive vacation!

By Myra Sellers

Black Hills & Badlands

M

illions of years of wind, water and erosion have created the chiseled spires, deep canyons and jagged buttes of this territory. On-going rains, freezes and thaws have revealed millions of years of sediment that paint a colorful landscape on the prairies of southwestern South Dakota. These are the legendary Black Hills of South Dakota, an oasis of pine-clad mountains of the Great Plains. The mountains and forests of the Black hills include a treasury of six national parks, 101 miles of National Scenic Byways, waterfalls, watchable wildlife and acclaimed recreational trails. The Badlands National Park is famous for its deep gorges and sharp lunar-like spires. The Lakota gave this its name, “mako sica,” meaning “land bad.” The park consists of 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires blended with the largest protected mixed grass prairie in the United States. It is desolation at its truest, where you can look for miles and see no sign of civilization.

Crazy Horse Memorial is the world’s largest sculpture still in progress. The nine-story-high face of Crazy Horse, a visionary leader committed to preserving the traditions and values of the Lakota way of life, was completed in 1998 when work shifted to the 22-story-high massive horse’s head.

This region features an exciting mix of Old West history and breath-taking scenery. It’s beyond all expectations!

Few attractions stir the emotions of visitors the way Mount Rushmore does. Since its completion in 1941, it has joined the Statue of Liberty and the Stars & Stripes as one of America’s most inspiring symbols of democracy.

Another exciting attraction of the area is the 1870’s settlement of Deadwood. The town attained notoriety for the murder of Wild Bill Hickok, and the Mount Moriah Cemetery remains the final resting place of Hickok and Calamity Jane. Today, Deadwood is a rollicking, rambling western town named as a national historic landmark with authentic recreations of turn-ofthe-century street lamps and accurately restored architecture.
