History of the Green Ridge Project

Beginning in 2005, Roanoke County’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism went through an extensive Master Plan process to determine what the future of Roanoke County’s parks system should look like. These recommendations were compiled from citizen surveys, community meetings and general public hearings. The plan was adopted by the Board of Supervisors in September 2007. Among the top needs cited by citizens in this plan included places to exercise such as walking tracks, indoor fitness facilities and family leisure pools. Green Ridge was designed to meet the needs of our citizens while accomplishing the larger regional goals of attracting and retaining young professionals, attracting tourists, enhancing real estate values, and attracting new businesses. We know the finished product is something EVERYONE can be proud of!

Here’s what we already have planned:

Members Only LAND Group Exercise Body Pump — by Les Mills©

M e m b e r s O n l y W AT E R G r o u p E x e r c i s e A.M. Jump Start

Body Flow — by Les Mills©

Hydro-Fit

This is the original barbell class that strengthens your entire body. This program features a balance of endurance and functional strength training with weight room exercises like squats, presses, lifts and curls. By emphasizing a low-weight, high-repetition workout, the risk of injury is reduced while participants gain strength. This is a Yoga/Tai Chi-style exercise program that builds flexibility and strength and leaves you feeling centered and calm. Controlled breathing, concentration and a carefully structured series of stretches, moves and poses to music creates a holistic workout that brings the body into a state of harmony and balance.

Cycling

A class with varying speeds, resistance levels and intensities that you can tailor to meet your personal goals and needs. Cycling is a great way to raise your heart rate, tone your lower body and improve your fitness level. *Newcomers should plan to arrive early to be fitted to their cycle*

This medium-to-high intensity class is a total body workout that includes 20-30 minutes of short cardio segments, strength and resistance exercises. Develop your flexibility, core strength, muscle strength, and muscular endurance. The use of a variety of water fitness equipment will be utilized.

Joints in Motion

The warmth, buoyancy and added resistance of water properties can help decrease pain and/or stiffness and help improve and maintain joint flexibility. A low-impact class centered on slow movements to improve joint and muscle flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, total body awareness and post rehabilitation.

Wave Walker/Runner

Step

This class will challenge your body and mind using combinations of step patterns, specifically a mixture of high and low impact on a step with an adjustable platform. With simple choreographed routines, you will challenge your cardiovascular system and your legs!

Pilates Sculpt

Similar to basic mat, this class will take the principles of Pilates and carry them over into traditional muscle conditioning exercises.

Cardio Combo

This class combines at least 2 different cardio styles: hi-lo aerobics, basic step, kickboxing and/or cardio circuits. Sculpting exercises may also be integrated throughout the class.

Yoga

Beginners and intermediates benefit in flexibility, posture and balance. Wear loose, comfortable clothes and enjoy the many benefits of yoga.

Abs, Abs, Abs

This class is designed to work on your body core. A strong torso is necessary for quality of life and prevention of injuries. Stretching is included at the end of each class.

8

Get your body moving early with a high-energy class at the beginner to intermediate fitness level. No swimming ability is required. Jump start offers LOTS of fun and shallow water moves to improve agility, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. Provided water fitness equipment will be used for added resistance to develop strength, balance and coordination.

This instructor-led class is held in our current channel, using the resistance of the water to build strength and give you a high-level cardiovascular workout and overall body toning. Water shoes are highly recommended. Participants can structure the necessary resistance according to their fitness levels.

KidZone

Don’t worry about keeping an eye on the little ones while you’re at Green Ridge Recreation Center — we will do that for you. Staff and plenty of structured activities will keep the kids busy while you’re taking a class, playing basketball or working out. The KidZone provides a two-hour child watch service for members while they are using Green Ridge Recreation Center. Children from 6 weeks to 8 years of age are welcome. At least one parent or guardian must be present in the Center to use this service. KidZone hours are: Monday through Friday 8:00am-2:00pm 4:00pm-8:00pm Saturday 8:00am-5:00pm Sunday 10:00am-5:00pm

Do you have corporate membership rates?

Yes. Facts show corporations who bring fitness and health awareness to their employees have experienced a reduction in the number of sick days, increased productivity, improved morale and a reduction in absenteeism. Green Ridge Recreation Center is partnering with local businesses and corporations to help improve the quality of life for everyone. How? By offering a corporate rate! When 20 or more of your employees sign up for a membership at our Center, all of your employees will be eligible for our lowest rate offered — the “County Resident” rate — regardless of where they reside. Plus, reaching this goal will get your company logo on our website to show your commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle for your employees. We would love the opportunity to share our Green Ridge membership information with you and your employees. For more details contact the Green Ridge membership sales office at 387-6078 x 494, or email Denise Pully at dpully@roanokecountyva.gov.

New! Know before you go! That is the focus of this three-part classroom clinic held at the new Green Ridge Center. In this clinic we will discuss the many factors that go into a safe and enjoyable overnight backpacking trip, such as packing your pack, clothing selection, weather, gear choice, environmental ethic and other topics. This is a great opportunity for you and your family to learn the in’s and out’s of backpacking. Space is limited to 15 participants. Instructor: Charlie Biesecker.

Introduction to Backpacking
