Fall 2009 Program Guide

Building healthy fun... by expanding recreation options for EVERYONE in the valley!

We’re gearing up for the opening of Green Ridge Recreation Center in January 2010. This 75,000 square foot facility will be unlike anything else in the region, featuring family oriented indoor and outdoor aquatics, wellness and fitness areas, and program space for our fantastic lineup of offerings. In anticipation of the center’s opening, we’ve provided 6 pages of detailed information about Green Ridge and how you can be a part of it. While this guide lists all of our recreation programs through the month of December, we’ll be adding a smaller supplemental edition of REConnection Magazine halfway through the Fall season to keep you up to date with our expanding programs. Look for the supplement in your mailboxes in late October or early November. Enjoy the guide and let us know if there’s something you’re interested in. We’re Your Recreation Connection! Scott D. First night is an introduction to Digital Audio Recording, where you’ll learn to use industry standard software to create, record and save audio tracks. Next is an audio production class where you’ll learn concepts like recording concepts like signal flow, microphone types & techniques, preamps, and how to capture high quality source audio whatever the instrument - voice, drums, guitar, bass, strings, keys, and so on. We will also explore the use of sample & loop based audio. The third class will feature an in-depth look at recording and editing individual tracks, allowing you to build and arrange a song. The final class focuses on mixing, both the art and science. We’ll objectively examine exactly what mixing is and then delve into a more subjective conversation on “what constitutes a good mix?” We’ll take a look and listen to some of the best mixing engineers in the music industry and the songs they crafted. Students will learn what distinguishes an engineer from a producer and the role both of these individuals play in the recording process. Tai Chi Level 1

T’ai Chi Chaun can be described as an exercise consisting of slow, relaxed movements that help us develop internal and external balance and harmony. The moves are practiced in a slow controlled fashion that builds strength as well as balance. T’ai Chi Chaun requires mindful concentration similar to meditation. The slow rhythmic movements relax the body and clear the mind. The movements are done with a feeling of buoyancy and lightness as if swimming in air. Another important aspect is the positive effect it has on circulation and stimulating blood flow to the organs. Twelve week program. Instructor: April Ackerman. Ages

Historic Valdese, NC

Valdese is known for its deeply rooted Christian heritage and unforgettable story of the Waldenses. More than 150 years ago, this tiny religious sect left the French Alps of Italy to find a new home, where they could worship without persecution. They were forced to take refuge and remain in seclusion until they received their religious freedom in 1848. Walk the Trail of Faith, an outdoor series of 15 exhibits that chronicles early settler life and the events of the flight of the Waldenses from Italy to the foothills of North Carolina. A visit to the Waldensian Museum includes many artifacts and furnishings. Concluding the day is a stop at the Village Park wall Mural, a stunning outdoor painting depicting Waldensian life. Lunch consists of salad, chicken parmesan, green beans, potatoes, roll & dessert. Fee includes breakfast biscuit, all tour fees, lunch, transportation & escort. Bus departs Brambleton Center at 6:00 AM returns at 8:45 PM; departs Hollins Library at 6:30 AM returns at 8:15 PM. Ages

120 years ago, a dapper young man, Jule Gilmer Korner, broke ground on what he intended to be a showplace & a temporary home. He set out to create a combination bachelor’s quarters, artist’studio, office, billiard room, carriage house & stables. The eccentric structure offers 22 rooms spread out over three floors & seven levels, with ceiling heights ranging from six feet to 25 feet. It was a work-inprogress from the beginning. The Folly defies simple description. No two doorways are exactly alike & the 15 fireplaces have differing designs. You must see this home to believe it & the Christmas decorations make it that much more special. Also, a tour of Replacements, Ltd. in Greensboro. Learn how a small business started in an attic & grew into a facility the size of four football fields. Lunch is at the Fire Mountain Steakhouse.
