Over the past decade, Chowan has experienced a remarkable resurgence with record enrollments, academic quality and financial soundness. Ranked as the fastest growing private college or university in North Carolina, Chowan University continues its expansion this summer with Phase II of the Whites Crossing student apartment community - three additional buildings joining the previous two. The new Pond Football Center will be completed for use by the fall 2014 football season. The Rose Family Tennis Complex, with its eight championship-style courts, will have a new clubhouse pavilion added later

this year. Work to restore the pool facility and renovate its adjacent Helms Center is being completed, as well as the renovation to the Music Department’s recital center in Daniel Hall. The university is in close proximity to the Outer Banks and Hampton Roads Virginia. Chowan’s park-like campus features 390 acres including Lake Vann, the beloved “Squirrel Park” and the original McDowell Columns Building, erected in 1851 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Accredited with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Chowan offers over 80 undergraduate academic programs among The School of Arts and Sciences, The School of Education and The School of Business, and offers Masters Degrees through the School of Graduate Studies. Several departments are also individually accredited, such as Teacher Education Program’s accreditation by NCDPI and NCATE, as well as the Music program’s institutional accreditation by NASM. Chowan of-

fers 16 varsity sports, as well as co-ed cheerleading, with 12 programs in the CIAA conference and all with dualaffiliation in the NCAA D-II and NCCAA. Chowan was founded by Dr. Godwin Cotton Moore in 1848 as Chowan Baptist Female Institute, a four-year women's college. The McDowell Columns building, which houses the administrative offices of the college, was constructed in 1851. Between 1850-1867, the school changed names to the Chowan Female Collegiate Institute, then switched back to the Chowan Baptist Female Institute. The school was renamed Chowan College in 1910 when it began awarding baccalaureate degrees, and began admitting male students in 1931. Financial strain from the effects of the Great Depression forced the school to become a two-year institution in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four-year status when it admitted a junior class. The school's Board of Trustees elected to officially change the name to Chowan University on April 6, 2006, and the change in status took place on September 1, 2006. For the men, the sports programs offered include baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer and tennis. Women can enjoy competition in the sports of basketball, bowling, cross-country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Chowan boasts of four main athletic venues - the storied James G. Garrison Stadium, home of the football Hawks and named in honor of Chowan’s longtime coach and athletic director (now retired) who is a member of the North Carolina Sports Hall

of Fame; Hawkins Field (baseball), bearing the name of now retired Chowan coach Jerry Hawkins; The Jenkins Center (the campus Fitness Center) and the Helms Center, constructed in 1977 and is home to the volleyball team and the men’s and women’s basketball programs. The Helms Center seats 2,500 people and can convert into three full-size regulation basketball or volleyball courts. The building also has three racquetball courts, a large free-weight based weight room, a recently updated indoor batting cage, a training room, and houses many of the team’s locker rooms. The Helms Center also serves as the office center for most of the athletic department coaches as well as its administration.

University Articulation A new 2+2 Articulation Agreement between Chowan University and Roanoke-Chowan Community College makes it possible for R-CCC graduates of their two-year Associate in Arts, Associate in Fine Arts and Associate in Science degree programs to be assured admission to Chowan University with junior year status. Assuming no other academic or social factors might prevent acceptance, an R-CCC student earning 60-61 semester hours in approved transfer courses with a GPA of 2.0 or greater and a grade of “C” or better in all RCCC general education core courses will now be considered to have fulfilled Chowan University’s general course requirements, with minimal exceptions, and will receive at least 60-61 semester hours of academic credit upon admission to Chowan University. “One year ago, when I accepted the position as President of R-CCC, the board directed me to increase opportunities for our students to transfer and to accelerate their pathways to the workforce,” stated Dr. Michael Elam, President of Roanoke-Chowan Community College. “These agreements essentially help to accomplish that di-

rective and are the first of many that will help our students reach their educational and career goals expeditiously.” There are many majors that will immediately benefit from the new agreement like Business Administration and Criminal Justice, and especially students interested in the field of Education. “Chowan University’s School of Education is excited about receiving students from Roanoke-Chowan Community College who wish to continue their work in our Teacher Education programs and are appropriately prepared,” explained Dr. Brenda Tinkham, Dean of Chowan’s School of Education. “This agreement ensures that students who qualify will be able to graduate and apply for a teaching license within two years from their date of enrollment for most Teacher Education programs.” For more information, contact Scott Parker, Director of Transfer Admissions at Chowan University, at enroll@chowan.edu or 1(888) 4-CHOWAN.

Chowan History Chowan University has a rich Baptist heritage that stems back to Mulberry Grove, a plantation in the St. Johns community located in Hertford County, North Carolina. It was at the dining table of Baptist deacon Dr. Godwin Cotton Moore, a distinguished North Carolina Baptist, that the concept of what would become Chowan University was formed. The founding of the historic McDowell Columns Building can be traced to the laying of its cornerstone on July 4th, 1851. In 1910, the Chowan Baptist Female Institute officially became Chowan College. Chowan had to lessen operations to a junior college status in 1937 due to the impact of the Great Depression. A few years before that in 1931, Chowan had first admitted men as students as a means to offset the depression’s effects. After closing its doors in 1943 due to World War II, supporters insisted that Chowan reopen. In 1949, Governor W. Kerr Scott of North Carolina was among the 5,000 persons who turned out for the Centennial Celebration in Murfreesboro commemorating the grand reopening of Chowan’s doors. Chowan grew to include a Graphic Arts Building (later dedicated as the Horner Graphic Communication Center in 1984); the men’s dormitory Mixon Hall; the then science building Green Hall which is now the Department of Visual Arts; Jenkins Hall women’s dormitory in 1958; a new cafeteria in 1959; another men’s dormitory now known as

Simons Hall in 1960; Garrison Stadium; in 1963; Robert Marks Hall, Dunn Hall, Belk Hall and a cafeteria annex in 1964; Whitaker Library and Parker Hall dormitory opened later in the 60’s; Camp Hall science facility in 1972; the Helms Athletic Center in 1980; and the Jenkins Wellness Center in 2003. Among great accolades in 1992, Chowan returned to its senior college status, and once again graduated four year Bachelor degree students in 1994 after 57 years. 2006 marked another major milestone in Chowan’s history when the school officially became Chowan University and the new Hawks mascot was unveiled. Now with more than 1,300 students enrolled and over 65 academic areas of study, Chowan University continues to expand its reach and influence to a whole new generation, as well as the continued expansion of the campus itself. Growing upon the success of the Whites Crossing student apartment community first established in 2012, Phase II of the project adds three additional buildings this year to the two previous built. The new Pond Football Center will be completed for use by the Fall 2014 football season. The Rose Family Tennis Complex, with its eight championship-style courts, will have a new clubhouse pavilion added later this year. Work to restore the pool facility and renovate its adjacent Helms Center is being completed, as well as the renovation to the Music Department’s recital center in Daniel Hall.
