elcome to the September 2014 edition of Road Today and thanks for your continued interest in the awardwinning magazine for Canada’s multicultural trucking industry. Inside you will find the latest updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. Kids are now back to school following the summer break and we wish all students, parents and teachers a fabulous learning year filled with happy moments. However, we need to remember that more children will be walking and biking on our roads as they attend school. Younger children often have limited experience with traffic and lack the skills to negotiate traffic safely. Motorists need to take special care while driving and especially around the bus stop and school zone areas. Please remember that road safety is a shared responsibility and everyone plays a significant role. The National Trucking Week 2014 will be held this month from September 7-14. This week is a special occasion to acknowledge and spotlight the contributions of the hundreds of thousands of men and women of the Canadian trucking industry who keep the country’s freight moving, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We take this opportunity to congratulate and thank every one who has chosen to build a career in the trucking industry, make valuable contributions and raise the industry profile. The Commercial Vehicle Safety

Alliance’s (CVSA) Brake Safety Week/ Operation Air Brake - an outreach and enforcement campaign designed to improve commercial vehicle brake safety throughout North America is coming up from Sep 7-13. Improperly installed or poorly maintained brake systems can reduce the braking capacity and stopping distance of trucks or buses, which poses a serious risk to driver and public safety. We encourage our patrons to keep their commercial vehicles fully maintained all the time. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has announced major construction and expansion at two major highways in the GTA – Hwy 410 and 427. While these improvements are aimed at reducing gridlock and better movement of people and goods, it also calls for extra patience and caution for motorists while driving around construction zones. Be prepared for traffic delays over the next few years with a hope for better things to come ahead. If you haven’t booked yet, there is still time to wrap up the 2014 golf season by playing at the 4th Annual Road Today Golf Classic being held on September 23rd at the Eagle Ridge (a ClubLink property) in Georgetown. Join us for an afternoon of great golf, scrumptious food, fun-filled day of networking and fabulous giveaways. Contact us for more details. Meanwhile, enjoy the last few weeks of summer and do stay in touch. Manan Gupta Editor

Mack Trucks Academy Receives CASE Accreditation

H

ighlighting Mack’s focus on developing quality training programs to encourage better service for its customers, Mack Trucks Academy recently received Continuing Automotive Service Education (CASE) accreditation from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). The accreditation acknowledges Mack’s focus on quality and offering customers superior after-purchase support and service. Mack Trucks Academy was evaluated against established industry standards to ensure that continuing education training meets best practices. Training programs play an integral part in Mack’s customer support strategy and prepare dealer technicians and service personnel to support customers in each area of Mack’s Pedigree Uptime Protection service and support suite – service management, maintenance plans and vehicle diagnostics. Mack Trucks Academy provides extensive training for 14 different dealership job roles, including sales, parts, service and technician, as well as training for drivers. Courses are available through e-learning and instructor-led classes conducted at seven locations in the U.S. and Canada. ASE is a non-profit organization established to improve the competence of automotive technicians through voluntary testing and certification. ASE established CASE Accreditation as a

voluntary program after perceiving the need for ongoing training of experienced service technicians to keep up with increasingly complex technology. Mack’s ongoing investment in technician training also includes a partnership with WyoTech, a premier technical school. WyoTech offers degree and diploma programs in the fields of automotive, diesel, collision/refinishing, motorcycle, marine and construction trades. WyoTech students enrolled in the Diesel Advanced Technology Education program receive specialized training on Mack engines, electronics, emissions, powertrain and chassis components. TRUCKING HR CANADA Roundtables to Examine Truck Driving, Training Standards

T

rucking industry representatives from across Canada will soon take part in a series of regional roundtables that will help to clearly define the knowledge, skills, and abilities that truck drivers are expected to demonstrate on the job. It is the latest phase of Trucking HR Canada’s Driving the Future project, which is supported by the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) and every provincial trucking association. The end result will be detailed information that will help guide schools when developing training programs, ensure that graduating drivers are more employable, and better meet the trucking industry ’s needs. The work also represents an important step toward mandatory entry-level driver training, and efforts to recognize truck driving as a skilled occupation.

“Each provincial association will invite a broad cross section of industry members to participate in the roundtables,” says Angela Splinter, CEO of Trucking HR Canada. “These moderated sessions will help us tap into their expertise so that we clearly understand what drivers need to know, and ensure that the information reflects regional realities.” Regional roundtables are being scheduled for September and October. The draft standard that emerges will then be circulated throughout the trucking industry for review and comments. The three-year Driving the Future project is supported with $1.2 million in funding from Employment and Social Development Canada. The work is also a direct response to recent recommendations by the CTA’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Truck Driver Shortage in Canada, and a landmark Conference Board of Canada RT report on the shortage.

Remote Panels Enable Greater Access to Carrier Transicold Refrigeration Unit Controls

C

arrier Transicold’s new APX™ remote panels add convenience and efficiency for refrigerated transport operations by placing trailer refrigeration controls in locations more easily accessible to operators. The remote panels are available in two configurations: “flush-mount,” designed for mounting inside the trailer near the rear doors, and “surface-mount” for use on trailer exteriors. Flush-mount panels are especially useful at distribution centers, where personnel can configure the refrigeration unit control by walking into the trailer from a loading dock. Surface-mount panels provide similar practicality and are typically mounted near the front of the trailer, opposite the main unit control located behind the driver, providing safer curbside access for the operator when the rig is parked along a traffic corridor. “Remote panels provide the ability to control the refrigeration system from secondary locations that are more convenient for drivers and distribution operations,” said Mark Fragnito, product manager, Carrier Transicold. The remote panels include the same dashboard display – a large, backlit screen, flanked by labeled control buttons and menu keys – that makes operation easy and intuitive. Easy to install, the new remote panels incorporate the same plug-and-play control architecture of Carrier Transicold’s latest units by using CAN bus communications protocols. This makes installation much simpler and reliable since it requires only four wires – far fewer than remote panels made for older generation trailer refrigeration units. APX remote panels can be specified as part of new equipment purchases or can be added to units already in the RT field.

GUESTCOLUMN

Why provide training and a daily driver support plan? There are a number of quality fleets staffed with professional drivers who have been properly screened and provided with quality Defensive Driving training. The drivers are managed by a staff of professional dispatchers/driver managers who create and foster a high level of safety awareness. These fleets’ take safety to the next level and are easily recognized. They are typically fully staffed with little or no driver turn over, and they are rarely at the rear of the scale house. The only time they are in the spotlight, is when they are on stage receiving fleet awards and kudos.

14

SEPTEMBER 2014

I

don’t like to use the work “accident”. Within the definition of the word – you find descriptive words like chance, unplanned, without apparent cause, and unfortunate. I prefer the word collision, and unlike the word accident - collisions do not happen by chance. Collisions are the direct result of not practicing a set of defensive driving techniques and a lack of management focus. We all know that drivers work in an ever changing environment (traffic & road conditions) that requires their full and undivided attention. To be the best – they simply can’t take their eye off the ball. Professional drivers rely on tried and true Defensive Driving (DD) techniques. These DD skills can be taught, but the real key is to keep these techniques fresh in your drivers’ minds - so they are practiced on a daily basis. A professional truck driver needs to be alert and able to react to all “the fools” and “the distracted” that they share the road with every day. Its’ a tough task. So, how can management effectively assist their drivers beyond providing them with DD training? Professional fleet support staff (dispatch / operations) can greatly help make the driver’s day safer by providing them with key information and support minimizing distraction and worry. A proactive driver manager works with his drivers well before the start of the trip - through to delivery. Driver’s need to know that support is there and that the company really has their back - if and when the need arises. Call it a daily trip plan! /roadtoday

At hiring, the carrier needs to educate its’ drivers on the formalized plan and procedures that it has in place to assist drivers while operating “over the road”. It starts with driver education on hiring. By taking as much guess work out of the driver’s day you can help settle him/her down to the task at hand – minimizing their distractions and worries. All company contact while the driver is working should be via messaging – through voice mail or message system. Never call and expect your drivers to answer the phone while driving, otherwise you may be part of the problem. Dispatch must develop positive relationships through daily dialogue. The days of the “cranky old dispatcher” are gone. Dispatchers need to be the driver’s life line. Any and all conversations should start with – how’s your day going? All conversations should be ending with “have a safe day driver! Dispatch should go through a formal trip planning exercise with every driver prior to dispatch. This plan would assist the driver to select correct routing - so they will not encounter any surprise low bridges, road closures, or an approaching weather front. Other information to help the driver better plan his or her trip should include information on load securement, border crossings, load height, and a suggested plan for their day – such as suggested fuel and meal stops along the route. The daily trip plan should suggest times and locations for breaks and end of the day shut down. The plan should provide confirmed delivery appointment time and directions to the final delivery point. A review

roadtoday www.roadtoday.com

and agreement regarding routing and expected time of arrival will ensure the trip plan is reasonable and in compliance with the driver’s HOS limitations. Dispatchers need to know and understand how to calculate reasonable run-time mileages. During my operation planning days, we always estimated truck travel time based on a vehicle averaging no more than 45 miles per hour. Unreasonable shipper expectations should never be downloaded onto a driver. Management must empower its’ drivers to make common sense decisions regarding adverse road conditions. Nothing can be more stressful to a driver than feeling pressure to complete a trip in adverse weather. Everyone has a comfort level, and pushing people outside of theirs’ is a recipe for an event. A driver should never be worrying about issues that are the responsibility of fleet management staff such as the handling of emergency roadside repairs. Fleet owners must provide equipment that is maintained to “best in class” standards, allowing their driver to feel confident that roadside inspections are not to be feared or avoided. This takes another huge worry off of a driver’s mind. In the event that a roadside repair is needed, a proactive carrier (not the driver) will have an established roadside repair plan in place to handle tire failures and mechanical breakdowns nationwide. Professional drivers need to stay focused to deal with distracted driving, aggressive drivers, and the mistakes being routinely made by others. Keep them focused with a daily plan that builds their confidence and keeps them on task. Commercial drivers will always be held to a higher standard. To meet these expectations carriers need to provide training and support. DEFENSIVE DRIVER TRAINING is imperative. Select only quality training. You can source this training from any of the members of the Ontario Truck Training Association or through firms like Smith Systems. To enhance driver knowledge you may want to use some on-line training - so you can periodically deliver refresher training to keep driver’s knowledge fresh. Providing DD skills training and a daily dispatch plan will pay dividends to those fleets that make the investment. Finally – to keep the program effective – ask your drivers for input on how your dispatch support plan and RT training might be improved.

Bestpass Network Continues to Expand Toll management and discount services now available at Niagara Falls Bridge Commission international border crossings

B

estpass Inc., providers of bulk purchasing and streamlined toll management services to commercial fleets, has announced that beginning August 16, 2014 Niagara Falls Bridge Commission (NFBC) managed bridges, including the Rainbow, Whirlpool, and Lewiston-Queenston international bridges, are now part of the Bestpass toll service. The expansion of the Bestpass toll network is the result of the recent implementation of the E-ZPass tolling program by the NFBC. “The addition of NFBC tolls to the E-ZPass network will further streamline toll management for our customers using those border crossings,” said John Andrews, president and COO of Bestpass. “These additional tolling locations are the latest in our ongoing expansion of partnerships with highway and toll authorities, and as we continue to expand we are expecting more key additions to the Bestpass service network in the upcoming months.” The new addition to the Bestpass network means that

16

SEPTEMBER 2014

the growing number of trucking operations that are using the company ’s toll management and discount services, from owner-operators to some of the country ’s largest fleets, can automatically use their existing Bestpass transponders at NFBC bridges. Additionally, any service related issues at NFBC tolls can now be handled by the Bestpass service center. Bestpass customers with ExpressPass, ExpressPass Commercial, and NEXUS cards can cancel their accounts. Information on refunds is available by accessing the Electronic Toll tab at http://www.niagarafallsbridges.com. Bestpass uses its bulk purchasing power to provide commercial motor carriers with savings beyond standard toll charge discounts. Savings are also derived by maximizing efficiency through its toll management solutions, including user-friendly account management tools and consolidated billing, and by providing a single transponder for both toll and weigh station bypass. To date, Bestpass has provided customers with $30 million in toll cost savings. RT

USEFUL INFO

VEHICLE EMERGENCY KITS CAN BE A LIFE SAVER No matter where you drive, you never know when something could go wrong. It could be a flat tire, getting stuck in traffic, an accident, a car break down, or sliding into a ditch on a less travelled road. This is why it is important to always be prepared and part of being prepared involves having an emergency kit.

—By Glenn Cooper

H

aving an emergency kit in your car can be very helpful when you are in a bind. While some people overlook its importance because they rely on road side assistance, the reality is that you never know how long it will take for help to arrive. “Even if you have road side assistance coverage you may have to wait a while for help to arrive, especially in poor weather conditions,” says Achiel Goossens, the senior manager of auto claims with Aviva Canada. “An emergency kit can help make things more comfortable while you are waiting for help to

arrive.” While there is no limit to what items you can include in your emergency kit, there are a number of things that Goossens suggests you need. These items include: • A cell phone (if you don’t carry one with you); • A first aid kit; • Bottled water and snacks; • A blanket, gloves, and additional warm clothing for the winter months; • Flashlight and batteries; • Tire gauge and jumper cables; • A small tool kit. This is a minimum. Depending on your specific situation, you may include other items based on your driving frequency and the climate where you drive. Regardless of how often and where you drive, having an emergency kit is common sense. If you don’t have one already, investing in one is not only important, it could be a lifesaver. More detailed information is available from your insurance broker or at AvivaCanada.com. (NC) RT

Ontario Leads Canadian Provinces in Legalizing Full Length Boat Tail Aerodynamic Devices to Reduce Fuel Consumption and Carbon Emissions ATDynamics Drives Regulatory Change with Potential to Deliver $3 Billion in Fuel Savings to Canadian Trucking Industry

18

A

ATDynamics, a Silicon Valley based transportation technology company has announced that the Province of Ontario has begun a deferred enforcement program allowing fleets to operate full length, patented TrailerTail devices up to five feet long within the Province as of August 11, 2014. Ontario is the first Province in Canada to take a proactive measure permitting fleets operating in its territory to immediately take advantage of the longer, maximum fuel efficiency TrailerTail models that US fleets enjoy. In December 2013, Transport Canada amended its Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MVSA) to allow boat tail devices up to five feet in length to operate on Canadian roadways, as compared to previous regulations which only allowed boat tail devices under two feet in length. It is now up to each Province to amend its local vehicle codes to reflect the amended MVSA. Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation shared with ATDynamics that “the fuel savings (estimated by the National Research Council as being up to 5 percent) and the associated reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are too significant to ignore or be postponed until there is an appropriate opportunity to amend the regulation.” In third party fuel efficiency testing conducted, the longer boat tail lengths have repeatedly demonstrated significantly greater fuel savings than shorter boat tail designs and devices which

SEPTEMBER 2014

/roadtoday

simply curve the back edges of the trailer. “ATDynamics has worked with Canadian regulators since 2009 to amend the commercial vehicle weight and dimension regulations to allow maximum efficiency boat tail technologies to operate in Canada,” said Andrew Smith, CEO of ATDynamics. Thirty thousand TrailerTails have operated over 2 billion miles on US highways to date. ATDynamics TrailerTail technology has the potential to reduce the fuel consumption of Canadian trucking operations by more than 63 million gallons of diesel fuel per year, saving the Canadian economy nearly $3 billion USD in the next decade. Every TrailerTail in operation reduces carbon emissions by approximately the same amount as removing one passenger vehicle from the roads. Previous to this decision, Canadian motor carriers with drivers and customers in the US could only operate TrailerTail devices within the US border and were required to close them upon entry into Canada, giving up substantial fuel savings. “Until all the Provinces adopt a similar program as Ontario, motor carriers hauling freight in those Provinces will be operating at a 5 percent cost disadvantage as compared to fleets utilizing their TrailerTails in Ontario, not to mention the environmental and air quality benefits lost in each Province,” said Al Smith. “TrailerTail installations will begin on Ontario based trucking fleets immediately.” ATDynamics TrailerTail technology streamlines airflow at the rear of a semi-trailer to reduce aerodynamic drag. The patented folding origami designs can be installed on a semi-trailer in under 45 minutes and deploy automatically at highway speed to enhance vehicle aerodynamics, fuel economy and RT safety.

SUCCESS STORY

VERDUYN TARPS CELEBRATES MILESTONES The next three years will be a very exciting time for Verduyn Tarps. They have just announced that they will be opening a 3rd location in the fall of 2014. 2015 will mark the 10th Anniversary of their first U.S location in Detroit, followed by the 30th anniversary of the original Hamilton store in 2016.

W

e are very pleased to announce the opening of our 3rd location at 3333 Grant Street, Gary, IN, just ½ mile from the I-80/94later this year. I think it will allow us to serve our customers better, and to further cement ourselves as a leader in the flatbed trucking industry moving forward,” says Lloyd Verduyn, President and Founder of Verduyn Tarps. “We have built this business for nearly 30 years on the principles I have found most important since day 1, Quality, Honesty, and Service. Without those, you aren’t going to last too long in this business.” Verduyn Tarps prides itself in being a true ‘one-stop-shop’ for the flatbed trucking industry. Their flagship product is the Eagle Smart Tarp Retractable System. Designed for performance and profitability, the Eagle Smart Tarp allows customers to tarp their loads in minutes, all while staying safely from the ground.

“Over the years, we have always tried to continuously improve the Eagle Smart Tarp. To do this, the most important factor is talking to the drivers, seeing what they like, what they don’t like. Drivers are the ones actually using our product day in and day out. Their feedback is the most important thing.” While the Eagle Smart Tarp is their premier product, Verduyn Tarps services the flatbed industry in many other ways. Verduyn Tarps carries all of the cargo control equipment driver’s would need for any situation. They have everything ranging from your basic tarps, chains and straps, to aluminum accessories, safety gear and specialty equipment. Truly a “Trucker’s Toy Store” If you can’t make it in to their store, they do offer a free

delivery service that covers a large portion of Southern Ontario. As a part of their delivery service, they will also pick up tarps in need of repair and drop them off when they are completed. To make things even more convenient for their customers, you will also be able to place your orders online this fall. Verduyn Tarps will be launching their new website on October 1st. It will give customers the ability to browse all of Verduyn Tarps products and place their orders online. Verduyn Tarps offers a full repair service for any make or model of tarp system. In certain situations, they can also do immediate repairs while you wait. “I know that time is money, and when one of my customer’s units is down, we do everything we can to get them back on the road.” The Verduyn Tarps Team would like you to come visit them in their Hamilton and Detroit locations for quality products and services. Their ambition is to get you back on the road and back to profitability as soon as possible. If you are in the flatbed trucking industry, Verduyn Tarps is there to help. RT

ROAD SAFETY

Make sure that Rover isn’t a driving distraction —By Glenn Cooper

M

ost people wouldn't think twice about grabbing their pet and taking them for a ride in the car to run some errands or to visit friends and family. However, with an increased focus on distracted driving and overall driving safety, there is growing concern about pet safety in the car. “Many people overlook the potential distraction that a pet can be, especially if they are loose in your vehicle,” says Achiel Goossens, the senior manager of auto claims with Aviva Canada. “They can distract you from the road, impair your vision, and even attempt to climb on you while driving. Properly securing your pet will ensure you are both safe.” GOOSSENS OFFERS THE FOLLOWING TIPS WHEN YOU GO FOR A RIDE: • Don't let your pets run loose in the car. • Don't let your dog hang its head outside the window. • Secure your pets using a pet-friendly seat belt or safety harness. • Crate small pets at all times. • Avoid letting your pets sit on your lap when driving. • Never leave your animal in the car unattended, especially in the summer months.

Consider installing a dog barrier in your vehicle if you have a hatchback, van or SUV. Properly securing your pets and insuring they are safe in the car before you hit the road will give you one less distraction. There are already enough things that require your attention on the road, and your pet should not be one of them. More detailed information is available from your insurance broker or at AvivaCanada.com. (NC) RT

GUESTCOLUMN

If you add your life points, what will your score be? Are you like me and sometimes feel as though life is one big video game. Think about it. If we assign points for different points in your life and then tally up your score at the end to see if you won the game, how would you fare? Let’s say all points were integrated so your life points and CSA points, driver’s license points, or other important functions were all graded together. Your goal at the end of your life is to come out with 1000 points or more. Maybe you get 10 points for every grade of school you completed, or if you are a lousy driver and had 9 points on your license then you would lose 9 points from your score. Maybe every time you did something nice for someone you gained 5 points. If life were graded by points how would you do? Where would you be on the point scale of life?

S

ome of you would be off the charts, such as the Nelson Mandela’s of the world. His years of captivity put him at a million points. The Pope and others are of course way off the charts, but what about the normal person? What about you and me? Let’s take a look at me. The school thing, not very good there. Low points in the grades completed. My work ethic is very good so hopefully I gained some points there. My driving record is good so hopefully I gained points there. I try to be nice to people and treat people as I like to be treated so hopefully I gained some points. I sometimes can have a temper so I am sure I lost some points in that area, just ask my wife. I was away a lot on the road when I was trucking so I may have lost some points in the Dad category to for being gone. I try

help people and make people feel important; I am passionate about my work so hopefully I have gained points there. So at the end of the day, being in my 50’s I would estimate, if I was keeping score that I may be at around 750 points. That isn’t bad considering I hopefully still have some time left to go and more things that I hope to accomplish. What would your score be? How many people have you helped, how is your education? The good thing is unless you are a criminal that has several bad offences against you anyone can change at any time. For instance I hated school. I thought it was the biggest waste of time ever. I do

however think education is important and believe that learning comes from everywhere and not just in the walls of a school building. I went back to school in my 40’s and now love to learn and do so everyday. I have found my learning comes from reading about my passions, people I respect, my industry, and my future goals. So if we were applying the point system to life I may have lost points for leaving school in my childhood but gained many back for learning later in my life. Think about that old lady we have heard about who got her college degree in her 90’s. It’s never too late to gain your points back, even those in jail can still make a comeback. So think about where you are, how you have been living your life, and where you are going? If your score isn’t adding up then maybe it is time for a change. You may not win the game but at least you will be in the running. I’ll see you on the finish line! RT

LEAVE A LANE. IT ' S THE LAW.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

HEALTHCOLUMN

Oral Thrush Oral thrush is a fungal infection in the lining of the mouth which is caused by a fungus called Candida albicans.

A

lthough anyone can develop oral thrush, some individuals are at higher risk. The two groups at highest risk are infants and those with compromised immune systems. Other health conditions such as anaemia and diabetes may also increase the risk. Certain medications such as antibiotics or inhaled corticosteroids have been shown to raise the chances of developing oral thrush. Finally, oral thrush infections are more common in those who smoke cigarettes. Initially, the infection will not cause any noticeable symptoms. However, as the infection progresses signs and symptoms will begin to appear. In most cases, oral thrush causes whit lesions on the tongue and/or inner cheeks. In more severe infections, oral thrush can spread to other parts of the mouth including the throat, gums and tonsils. Oral thrush may or may not cause pain. Some patients report mild pain and bleeding after scraping the white lesions. Loss of taste and dry mouth are also experienced by some people. It is important to seek medical attention if the oral thrush infection is persistent. A doctor can usually diagnosis it by performing a physical examination. If the doctor is unsure, they will look at small sample under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis.

The goal of treatment with oral thrush is to stop the spread of the fungus. For healthy adults, the most common form of medical treatment is antifungal medications. These come in several forms which include mouth wash, tablets and lozenges. It is important to note that some fungal medications may cause liver damage. As a result, the doctor will most likely order periodic bloods tests to monitor liver function if prolonged use of the medication is required. There are a few self help tips that may speed up the recovery from an oral thrush infection. First of all, practicing good oral hygiene is very important. Brush your teeth at least two times per day and floss at least once per day. Also, replace your tooth brush often until the infection is cleared up. Warm salt water rinses may also be helpful. Seeing your dentist on a regular basis especially if you wear dentures will aid in keeping the mouth and teeth clean and healthy. Some studies have shown that ingesting probiotics which contain good bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium can help to balance the normal bacterial flora with in the body. Finally, limiting the amount of sugar and yeast consumed will discourage the growth of fungus. As you can see, in most cases oral thrush is not a life threatening condition. However, persistent infections can become a real nuisance. As with most medical conditions, early detection is the key. Thus, it is important to contact your health care professional promptly if you suspect that you have oral RT thrush.Until next month, drive safely.

ith Volvo’s model year 2016 vehicles come an even greater value of ownership as we continue to refine the aerodynamic profile of our VN series tractors and redefine traditional expectations of powertrain performance through our integrated Volvo engines and I-Shift transmission,” said Göran Nyberg, president, Volvo Trucks North American Sales & Marketing. “Our latest enhancements provide a strong complement to the fuel efficiency improvements of up to three percent provided through last year’s introduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) 2014-certified engines.”

Efficiency – powertrain packages, Volvo will offer an XE-Adaptive Gearing package to further boost fuel efficiency for operations that go out loaded and return empty or lightly loaded, like bulk haulers, liquid tankers and flatbed carriers. XE-Adaptive Gearing provides the same benefits for dry van trailers operating under the same conditions. The system is both a direct and overdrive driveline depending on rear axle load, which the system senses in real-time. When loaded, the transmission locks out the 12th gear and provides the performance and fuel efficiency benefits of direct drive. During unloaded or lightly loaded trips, the driveline operates in overdrive, providing enhanced fuel efficiency and even greater driver comfort.
