asked to tie a MADD red ribbon to a vehicle, backpack, purse, key chain or briefcase. This symbolizes a commitment to drive sober during the holiday season and throughout the year. It also serves as a tribute to victims of impaired driving. Every day, an average of four Canadians are killed, and 174 are injured, as a result of impaired driving crashes. Canada’s National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims will be held on November 19th. It’s the day Canadians stop to recognize and remember those individuals who have lost their lives on one of our nation’s roads, while also remembering friends, family and colleagues who have been affected by these tragedies. The objective of the day is to raise awareness in Canada and specifically among those with high-risk driving behaviours as to the impact of road crashes on their communities. Avoiding the four high risk driving behaviours can save lives. When it comes to road crashes, the following are key to avoid: distracted driving, aggressive driving, impaired driving and non-use of seat belts. Now that winter is closing in, road conditions are far less than favourable. Are you and your vehicles fully prepared for the deepfreeze challenges? If not, please go through the tips appearing on Page 31 which will help to keep you confident in the driver’s seat. Please accept best wishes on a joyous holiday season. Conduct yourselves safely and shall see you next month! Manan Gupta Editor

Volvo Trucks Modifies North American Alternative Fuels Plan Adapting to the pace of the North American alternative fuel market, Volvo Trucks has put on hold plans to launch its own compression ignition liquefied natural gas (LNG) engine for North America. Field testing of Volvo’s dimethyl ether (DME)-powered vehicles will continue, and the company will continue to offer spark-ignited natural gas engines in its VNM and VNL models.

D

evelopment of the natural gas infrastructure to support long-haul trucking has been modest over the last year, and the needs of customers in the primary markets for natural gas vehicles – regional haul and dedicated routes – are being met with the company’s current natural gas line-up. Volvo Trucks continues to believe that DME – which can be produced from natural gas – holds promise as a heavy-truck fuel. Customer field tests of DME-powered vehicles will continue, but the company has decided not to establish a commercialization date as it continues monitoring market and stakeholder interest RT in the fuel.

ROAD SAFETY

Minister Steven Del Duca

Province Introducing New Legislation to Make Ontario’s Roads Safer

O

Ontario is introducing legislation that, if passed, would help keep the province’s roads among the safest in North America by reducing collisions, injuries and fatalities. If passed, the proposed legislation and supporting amendments to the Highway Traffic Act will make highways and roads safer by: • Increasing fines for distracted driving from its current range of $60 to $500 to a range of $300 to $1,000; assigning three demerit points upon conviction; and adding distracted driving to the existing list of novice driver conditions. • Applying current alcohol impaired sanctions to drivers who are drug impaired. • Introducing additional measures to address repeat offenders of alcohol impaired driving. • Requiring drivers to wait until a

Quick Facts •

• pedestrian has completely crossed the road before proceeding at school crossings and pedestrian crossovers. • Increasing fines and demerits for drivers who door cyclists, and requiring all drivers to maintain a distance of one metre when passing cyclists, where practicable. • Helping municipalities collect unpaid fines by expanding licence plate denial for drivers who do not pay Provincial Offences Act fines. Ensuring Ontario’s roads and highways are safe is part of the government’s economic plan for Ontario. The four part plan is building Ontario up by investing in people’s talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives, and building a secure savings plan so everyone can afford to retire. RT

According to recent statistics, over 45 per cent of drivers killed in Ontario were found to have drugs or a combination of drugs and alcohol in their system. If current collision trends continue, fatalities from distracted driving may exceed those from drinking and driving by 2016. Pedestrians represent about one in six motor vehiclerelated fatalities on Ontario roads — 41 per cent of which occurred at intersections. The proposed legislation would build on existing measures Ontario has introduced to improve road safety, including making booster seats mandatory, ensuring every person wears a seatbelt, introducing stiffer penalties for street racing, bringing in tougher impaired driving laws, and banning hand-held devices while driving.

New White Paper from Freightliner Trucks Examines Real Cost of Ownership

F

leets and owner-operators seeking to maximize profitability must consider their trucks as a critical part of their business, according to a new white paper released last month from Freightliner Trucks. Available on FreightlinerTrucks.com/RCO, “Increasing Profitability by Lowering Your Real Cost of Ownership” takes a close look at hard and soft costs over the lifetime of a vehicle, and the impact those factors can have on a business. “Maximizing profitability is no longer just about fuel efficiency and maintenance costs. Fleet managers and owner-operators today need to incorporate a much broader set of parameters to analyze the Real Cost of Ownership that contributes to running a successful business,” said Mary Aufdemberg, director of product marketing for Freightliner Trucks. Freightliner has defined the five main Real Cost of Ownership factors for on-highway customers as fuel efficiency, connectivity, safety, quality and uptime. The white paper studies each of these categories, and incorporates insights from fleet managers, professional drivers, and industry associations. The white paper also includes new information on technology, driver recruitment and safety. Added Aufdemberg: “By considering real-life challenges with operational costs, we are able to take a deep dive into all of the factors RT that can impact a business.”

Showing their vulnerable side: van drivers have to be prepared to cope with sudden gusts of wind. In the Sprinter with the current version of Adaptive ESP they can now count on the support of Crosswind Assist, available as a retrofit solution.

rosswind Assist is now also available as a retrofit solution for numerous variants of the Sprinter. The most important prerequisite: the vehicle must be fitted with the current version of Adaptive ESP, available since January 2012. Almost all owners of vehicles built between 2012 and mid-2013 are therefore now able to retrofit this highly effective safety feature to their vehicle. The mid-2013 model change saw Crosswind Assist become part of the standard specification of all the most common Sprinter variants. Mercedes-Benz dealerships will provide customers in their area with information about the specific options for and procedures involved in arranging professional retrofitting. In all cases retrofitting is an inexpensive solution that, in Germany for example, costs less than 200 euros, including installation.

november 2014

/roadtoday

Crosswind Assist is one of five new safety systems that last year saw the new Sprinter advance into a completely new dimension of safety technology in the van segment. Its sensors detect forces acting on the vehicle from buffeting crosswinds – be it on a bridge or when overtaking a truck. Through a brake actuation via ESP at the wheels of the vehicle side facing the wind, a yaw motion develops and counteracts the crosswind interference. The track offset is thus significantly reduced. This results in tangible relief of strain for the driver. Their feeling of safety and comfort increases, and inappropriate driver reactions in gusts of wind are prevented. Via an indicator lamp in the instrument cluster the driver’s attention is also drawn to the system’s intervention. The Crosswind Assist is activated from a speed of 80 km/h. Since 2013 Mercedes-Benz has been the only manufacturer to offer Crosswind Assist as standard on a RT vehicle in the Large Van category.

Carrier Transicold Bolsters Vector Trailer Refrigeration Unit Warranties

C

arrier Transicold has enhanced the warranty coverage for its Vector trailer refrigeration units, reflecting the series’ reputation for reliability. Carrier Transicold helps improve global transport and shipping of temperaturecontrolled cargoes with a complete line of equipment for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers. The warranties for the hybrid Vector 8500 and Vector 8600MT units now include 48-month/8,000-hour major component coverage for the engine, generator and compressor. This compares with 36-month/6,000hour coverage on earlier models. Additionally, the APX control’s microprocessor and stepper valve modules are warrantied for 60 months/10,000 hours – one year longer than comparative control systems. The Vector units continue to offer 12 months of unlimited coverage and 36-month/6,000-hour limited coverage for the entire unit. On the multi-temp Vector 8600MT, basic warranty coverage for the new, smarter remote evaporators has been extended to 36 months/6,000 hours, triple the warranty for prior remote evaporators. The Vector 8100 engineless unit for stationary cold storage applications also now features improved warranty coverage, with the run-hours limit for 36-month basic coverage and 48-month major component coverage now extended to 10,000 hours. The Vector platform’s signature E-Drive all-electric refrigeration technology means refrigeration and heating operations are 100 percent electric. All models can be plugged into an AC electrical supply when parked, providing full refrigeration capacity without engine noise, emissions or fuel consumption. Over the road, the 8500 and 8600MT units are powered by an on-board generator driven by the unit’s diesel engine, whereas the Vector 8100 unit does not require the engine-generator combination, because it is designed for RT stationary cold storage. @roadtoday

riska Holdings Limited (Kriska) is pleased to announce it has been selected as the 2014 Volvo Trucks Safety Award winner in the large fleet category during a ceremony at the American Trucking Associations Management Conference & Exhibition in San Diego, California. This award is given out on an annual basis based on the recipient’s safety and training programs, as well as their safety scores in Canada and the United States. “This award is a testament to the caliber of driver we have at Kriska,” notes Mark Seymour, CEO of Kriska. “Our company drivers and owner operators are true professionals, who treat the safety of the motoring public with the utmost of care and importance. Our drivers represent the very best of the trucking

industry, and this award is something all of our employees at Kriska – both inside the office and over the road – should be very proud of.” Kriska provides its new drivers with at least four weeks of in-cab training from one of 16 veteran driver trainers. Drivers also have the ability to enhance their skills and knowledge through the use of the company’s in-house driver simulator. Kriska also developed a Safety & Performance Bonus Program, which rewards Kriska operators with cash incentives for driving three months without a safety incident. “By investing in innovative training programs, Kriska achieved tremendous safety performance during the past year,” said Gran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North American Sales & Marketing. “These results show that safety does not happen by chance, it happens by choice.” RT

Ontario to Introduce Mandatory Entry Level Training for Class A Truck Drivers

T

he Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) is applauding an announcement from Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, Steven Del Duca, calling for mandatory entry level training for Class A truck drivers in the province. In an article in Toronto Star published October 16th, the minister is quoted as saying: “We are going to go forward (with mandatory entry level training). We’re going to move as quickly as we can but we want to make sure that we get it right.” He added he believes “it should take place as quickly as possible, but in a manner that actually produces the end result that we all want, which is the safest roads in North America, which is part of my responsibility.” The minister also raised the prospect of a national training standard at a recent meeting of the Council of Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety in Montreal. Ontario is the first province to announce that it is prepared to make an entry level standard mandatory. An in-depth investigation into truck driver training and licensing conducted by the Star published last month highlighted concerns raised by OTA and others over the inconsistent level of training received by new Class A drivers, the proliferation of so-called “licensing mills”, and weaknesses in the provincial licence test for commercial truck drivers. David Bradley, OTA’s president and CEO, applauded the Minister’s statements saying the commitment to mandatory entry level training is “a watershed moment for the trucking industry.” While the Class A licence test needs to be updated and consistently applied, Bradley said “the key is mandatory

18

november 2014

/roadtoday

entry level training – to an industry developed standard – that must be completed before a prospective driver can take the licence test.” “The mere fact that someone holds a Class A licence does not ensure that person has the skills to be a safe and productive transport driver,” says Bradley. “Even an improved test will never fully determine a new driver’s skill level. Mandatory entry level training will at least assure trucking companies that when they hire a new driver, he or she has some basic level of skill that with additional training and experience can eventually lead to that person becoming a fully qualified professional driver.” Bradley also contends that mandatory entry level training is an essential prerequisite for getting the tractortrailer driving profession deemed to be a skilled occupation – something a Canadian Trucking Alliance blue ribbon task force of industry CEO’s and senior executives says is key to resolving the looming chronic shortage of qualified drivers. The association has built a coalition of support for mandatory entry level training that includes all the major truck insurance companies, the association representing the province’s truck driver training industry, safety groups and the national association of shippers. A working group of carriers is currently revising the National Occupational Standard which will form the foundation for a mandatory entry level training standard. The project is being managed by Trucking HR Canada in co-operation with CTA and is being supported by a grant from the federal department of Employment and Social RT Development Canada.

winter driving

Winter drivers should always check vehicle tire inflation

W

hen the snow flies, Canadian drivers have to be prepared. Temperature swings, which are common across Canada during the fall and winter months, can result in significant changes in tire pressure. For example, did you know that for every 5ยบC drop in temperature, tire pressure drops by one pound per square inch (psi)? So if the temperature were to drop to -15ยบC, tires could lose three psi of tire pressure. For some tires that means a 10 per cent loss in inflation. By maintaining proper tire inflation, consumers can save money at the pumps and reduce harmful emissions. Most importantly, they can increase the safety and performance of their vehicles by ensuring that their tires are being used within the correct operating specifications and conditions for the vehicle. As well, because properly inflated tires will last longer, you could save the cost of one or two sets of tires over the life of your vehicle. According to the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada, even though many drivers use all-season tires because they do provide safe all-weather performance, winter tires are actually more efficient once the mercury starts to dip. The association says modern winter tires offer up to 50 per cent or more traction than

20

all-season tires. If fuel efficiency and safe winter driving are important to you, there are some very helpful tips and tools on the Natural Resources Canada website at vehicles.gc.ca such as the EnerGuide Label for Vehicles and the annual Fuel Consumption Guide. You can also call 1-800- 387-2000 to receive more information about fuel efficiency. (NC)

This year’s featured employers include: • Bison Transport • Erb Group of Companies • Home Hardware • J&R Hall Transport, Inc. • Kindersley Transport • Kriska Transportation • Logikor Inc. • MacKinnon Transport Inc. • SLH Transport • Transpro Freight Systems Ltd. “These recognized fleets lead by example,” says Angela Splinter, Chief Executive Officer of Trucking HR Canada. “We look forward to even more fleets joining their ranks in 2015 – reflecting their individual commitments to following the

best practices in human resources.” The Top Fleet Employers selection criteria reflects Canadian human resources issues, trends and working environments, and has been validated by a panel of trucking industry experts and a Certified Human Resource Professional (CHRP). It also echoes Trucking HR Canada’s standards of excellence and considers every position in a fleet. The criteria applied to for-hire fleets was firmly rooted in the core values of Canadian Trucking Alliance’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Driver Shortage, while private fleets were scored using a system that reflects their unique working environments and requirements . Centennial College prof contributes to Targa Newfoundland wins

S

carborough’s Hume Media racing team had its most successful year at Targa Newfoundland this September thanks, in part, to the technical skills of Centennial College professor Garrett Nalepka, who worked hard to keep the team’s three cars running during the grueling five-day race. When the dust settled and the 14th annual competition around the island province concluded, Hume’s three-car team finished first, second and second in their respective divisions. The race began and finished in the city of St. John’s, involving 1,800 km of paved and gravel roads and 40 high-speed stages. Almost one-third of the vehicles that start the race typically do not finish due to mechanical failure, and many of the cars that do finish are held together with duct tape and zip ties. Having a skilled and inventive technician on hand is key to completing the race route. That’s where Centennial’s Garrett Nalepka comes in. “Garrett was a huge asset to the team. Without him we would not have had those two second-place finishes we managed to pull off with the 2006 Mini GP and the 2004 BMW M3,” said team leader John Hume Sr. Garrett is an automotive tech professor in Centennial’s TADA/Chrysler co-op program, and has experience supporting a Dodge Viper racing team in the World Challenge B Series, which tours many tracks in the U.S. This was his first experience wrenching for an open-road rally event. “I’ve never been in a race that lasted five days! It’s all about endurance and keeping the cars going and keeping the drivers safe,” says Garrett, who admits the early morning starts

and late-night repairs made for an exhausting schedule. He was the lone technician on the team, responsible for keeping three race cars running. “Typical fixes involved suspension adjustments and repairs. The Minis had to be raised on their suspensions to minimize damage on the rough roads,” he explains. A lot of repairs were done after hours in hockey arenas set up as makeshift garages. Garrett had to fabricate parts in some instances, since his minivan could only carry so many spare parts. And he largely worked with hand tools. “We had a few breakdowns in and between races,” Hume explained. “Garrett was there each time to get the cars back into action without missing a beat. His ability to think and react instantly on the fly saved us from missing any race legs and hence losing any unnecessary penalty points.” In the end, skill and perseverance prevailed and the Hume Team cars crossed the finish line with excellent scores. The team also managed to raise $23,000 towards multiple sclerosis (MS) research from its generous donors – a great outcome that amounts to a win for everyone. RT www.centennialcollege.ca

top tips for driving through a Canadian winter Now that winter is closing in, road conditions are far less than favourable. Are you and your car fully prepared for the deep-freeze challenges? If not, the following tips will help to keep you confident in the driver’s seat:

Have the right

Prepare for the

Understand your

equipment

worst case scenario protection

Have you put your winter tires on yet? When conditions get slick or icy, all-season tires may not be enough to maintain control. A recent study conducted by Western Financial Group found that only one quarter of Canadians have winter tires on their vehicles when the season begins. In fact, just over half (56 per cent) say that they make the change before setting out. “Not only do those who lack winter tires put themselves at risk, they also endanger others,” says Shirley Parchoma, an insurance expert with Western Financial Group. “You likely wouldn’t drive without working brakes or a seatbelt. Similarly, winter tires should be a major priority. In fact, in certain places, drivers with winter tires receive discounted automotive insurance.”

From increased traffic accidents to vehicle failures, winter driving presents more risks than driving in other periods of the year. While you may not be able to prepare for every possibility, you can take certain precautions. For instance, you should carry a winter emergency safety kit in your vehicle. “Only one third of Canadians follow that advice,” observes Parchoma. She points out that according to federal government guidelines, safety kits should include items such as energy bars, water in plastic bottles, blankets, extra clothing, a first aid kit, a small shovel, a scraper, a snowbrush, a wind-up flashlight, road flares, and a tow rope. “It’s such a simple thing, so try not to overlook it.”

While it may sound obvious, many drivers do not fully understand their insurance coverage or what to do in the case that they should need it. As many as 55 per cent of those surveyed said that emergency road services are not covered. Do you know if yours are? “It is very important to have a firm grasp of your coverage, no matter the time of year, so talk to your broker to ascertain the extent of your protection,” advises Parchoma. Additionally, drivers should make sure that they have collision coverage in the winter months. If you are parking your car on streets and in lots frequently throughout the winter, talk to your broker about the coverage needed to ensure that your vehicle is protected. Once done, bundle up and start your engines. More information on car insurance is available at www.westernfinancialgroup.ca. (NC)

Penske Truck Leasing Now SmartWay Transport Partnership Affiliate in Canada

P

enske Truck Leasing is an Affiliate in the Canada SmartWay Transport Partnership. Created by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the SmartWay program is administered by Natural Resources Canada. The United States EPA launched SmartWay in 2004 to help business improve the sustainability of their freight supply chains. NRCan introduced the program to Canada in 2012. The SmartWay Transport Partnership is a joint U.S.-Canada network connecting over 3,000 companies with a shared goal of saving fuel and reducing emissions from their freight supply chain. With SmartWay, companies have access to free, standardized tools to help them benchmark their freight operations and find areas to improve their productivity and competitiveness.

In 2013, over 300 Canadian SmartWay partners saved more than $65 million CAD in fuel costs, and reduced their emissions by an amount equal to taking more than 100,000 cars off the road for an entire year. Find out how to join SmartWay in Canada at www.smartway.nrcan.gc.ca. “We appreciate the opportunity to gain SmartWay membership in Canada,” said Drew Cullen, Penske Vice President of Fuels and Environmental Affairs. “Our company has long-term leasing, rental, used truck sales and logistics operations in Canada. We are now able to assist our transportation customers with standardizing their sustainability programs outside the U.S.” In the U.S., Penske Truck Leasing is a consecutive winner of the SmartWay Affiliate Challenge Award. In 2013, Penske Logistics was given a SmartWay Excellence Award. Penske Truck Leasing is an affiliate partner. Penske Logistics is a partner in the trucking carrier and logistics categories.. RT

The Leaves are Changing, Are You? F all is a great time of year. The leaves are changing with beautiful colours as we transition into another season making way for the realities of winter. This is nature’s way of getting rid of the old and preparing for the new. As much as it is nice to enjoy the changes going on outside in nature I have found this is also a great time to change on the organizational front. I find around this time I automatically fall into goal mode in my mind. Maybe it’s because our year end for our business is around this time and we begin changing over things like files and data? Maybe it’s because we are in the last quarter of the year and are beginning that process of planning for next year? Maybe it is just the fact that the time of year is somehow changing the energy of our bodies and it starts changing our thought processes? Who knows why it happens every year at this time, but it does for many of us. One of the common questions I get is why change? Maybe you are an owner operator and don’t have large files or data that needs changing on a regular basis? Many folks are not goal oriented like myself and don’t feel they have to plan how the next year will fall because it is not up to them, they have a travel agent named Dispatch. Many feel that it is only large corporations or busy professionals that need to change office files and so on, but that is where they are wrong! It doesn’t matter if all your business will fit into a brown manila envelope every year, you should change the files each year and organize them. It’s not the space requirement but the psychological benefit

that is the important part of the process. If you’re like many owner operators out there you may not be looking at the numbers in your business very often. If that is happening you may be missing some important information that is telling you about problems in your business. At least you’re looking at your business once per year and it gives you that feeling of a fresh start which may give you a new outlook on your business. If you don’t reorganize yourself on a regular basis then you may be in even more trouble than you think. If things are down in your business and you don’t feel as though it is where it should be how do you know how to fix it? Where do you get that new energy to try something new? How do psychologically make a new start? Being organized helps you in all those areas. It may just give you the new start you need to improve your business. You are going through your files and looking down your balance sheet you notice that some numbers are way out of whack on the cost side. You make a mental note to review those numbers more carefully. That helps you create a new goal for next year to lower that cost by investigating new plans or products. The next year you are going through the same cycle and find that you saved yourself $1000.00 due to the change you made last year. That is how the process works and it will help set you up for success. What if you worked that way through some of your other costs and were able to save more money? Use this time of year for more than pretty scenery, use it to tackle the organizational front in your business and you will see it will soon be the best time of the year.

LEAVE A LANE. IT ' S THE LAW.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely.

Major North American Natural Gas Truck Project Links Canada and the United States

N

orth America’s first major north-south natural gas truck project will soon be underway with 100 compressed natural gas (CNG) commercial heavy trucks travelling between Quebec and Texas. The project was announced last month by Ryder System Inc. who has signed a full-service lease agreement for the vehicles with C.A.T. Inc. The new trucks will replace almost one-third of existing fleet and operate on a long-haul route of an estimated 3,400 kilometers with fueling provided by an undisclosed third party. “This is a timely and important development for the North American transportation sector,” said Alicia Milner, President of the Canadian Natural Gas Vehicle Alliance. “Greater use of natural gas as a vehicle fuel can contribute to economic and environmental objectives for Canada and the United States.” In late August, the Harper Government and the Obama Administration released the Canada-United States Regulatory Cooperation Council’s Joint Forward Plan with natural gas for transportation being one of 24 priority areas identified for improvements in the way regulatory departments and agencies in both countries work together.

Based in Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec, C.A.T. Inc. has been in operation since 1978 providing transportation services to the automotive, food, beverage, consumer goods, and electronics industries. “C.A.T. Inc’s natural gas fleet program will enable us to be extremely successful in supporting our customers’ sustainability efforts. We are excited to work with Ryder System Inc. to transfer our diesel fleet to a CNG fleet in Canada,” said C.A.T.’s President Daniel Goyette. The natural gas fleet is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 2,564 tonnes per year. The project will benefit from $15,000 per truck from the Government of Quebec’s ecoCamionnage incentive funding program. Ryder System Inc. is an industry leader in natural gas vehicle solutions for the commercial transportation market with more than 27 million miles of natural gas operating experience. This project is Ryder’s first in Canada and their largest single natural gas fleet project to date. The company will provide maintenance for the 100 CNG trucks at their Montreal service facility, which is being upgraded for compliance with natural gas standards. To date, Ryder has deployed CNG and liquefied natural gas (LNG) vehicles in fleets in California, New York, Michigan, Texas, Arizona, Utah, RT Georgia, and Louisiana.

The right man “For this job we need someone who is responsible,” said the employer. “Then I’m your man,” answered the potential employee. “On my last job, every time anything went wrong, they said I was responsible.” Bitter facts One night at the dinner table, the wife commented, “When we got married, you took the smaller piece of steak and gave me the other one. Now you take the large one. You don’t love me any more...” “Nonsense, darling,” replied the husband, “you just cook better now.” Demand and supply A gentleman, fresh out-of-gift ideas, bought his mother-in-law a large plot in an expensive cemetery. On her next birthday, he bought her nothing. She was quick to comment, loud and long, on his thoughtlessness. The son-in-law said: “Well, you haven’t used the gift I gave you last year.” Adventure ride The driver of a car with an ice-covered windshield had several minor accidents before he was stopped by a police car. “Don’t you think it would help if you cleaned the ice from the windshield?” the officer asked. “I don’t think so,” was the reply. “I left my glasses at home.”

Indigestion

healthcolumn

I

ndigestion is not a disease or illness but rather a collection of symptoms that may be experienced by an individual. The medical term for indigestion is dyspepsia which is a general term that is used to describe discomfort in the upper abdomen. Although indigestion is very common, the type and severity of the symptoms vary from person to person. One of the most common symptoms of indigestion is early fullness during a meal. Some individuals may only be able to eat a few spoonfuls of their meal before feeling full. Other people complain of discomfort or burning in the upper abdomen after eating a meal. Other possible symptoms of indigestion include nausea, vomiting and belching. There are many possible causes of indigestion. Oftentimes, indigestion is caused by lifestyle choices and may be triggered by food, drink or medication. Common causes include overeating or eating too quickly and eating fatty or spicy foods. Caffeine, alcohol and nicotine may also cause indigestion. In addition, certain medications such as antibiotics and pain relievers have been shown to cause indigestion in certain patients. In most cases, mild indigestion is nothing to worry about. However, it is important to consult with a doctor if your symptoms last more that a few weeks or if your indigestion is accompanied by unintentional weight loss or loss of appetite, black stools, vomiting blood, or difficulty swallowing. All of these symptoms may indicate a more serious condition that needs immediate medical attention. If your family physician is unable to identify the cause of your indigestion, he or she may refer you to a specialist (gastroenterologist) for further testing.

If you have been diagnosed with mild indigestion, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes to help ease the symptoms. Avoiding food triggers is usually a good place to start. Also, eating smaller meals more frequently may help reduce the symptoms. Oftentimes, doctors will recommend eliminating alcohol and caffeine completely. If possible avoid certain pain medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Maintaining a healthy weight and regular exercise also promotes better digestion. New evidence is showing that reducing stress and anxiety may also help with indigestion. If your indigestion persists after making lifestyle changes, your doctor may suggest medications such as antacids or other prescription medications that will reduce the production of stomach acids. Antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications may also be beneficial. Alternative or complimentary forms of treatment may also help to ease indigestion. However, it is important to consult with your doctor before starting any alternative treatment. Some people find that herbal teas which contain peppermint help reduce the symptoms of indigestion. Others find acupuncture very helpful. Finally, yoga and relaxation techniques may help reduce stress and anxiety. As you can see, most cases of indigestion do not cause any serious complications. However, it can significantly affect the quality of your life. Next time you feel a bit of indigestion, keep in mind the simple lifestyle tips that were mentioned above. RT Until next month, drive safely.
