From the Editor’s Desk

T

The Road Safety Challenge (RSC) sponsored by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is a provincial campaign (May 15th – June 11th 2017) with a goal to engage the participation of community groups and private sector to raise awareness of road safety issues and work together to make Ontario’s roads safer.

Thanks for your continued patronage to our award-winning magazine serving Canada’s multicultural transportation industry! Inside this edition, you will find the latest developments and updates related to the industry plus all the regular columns and features. Ontario is creating jobs and keeping people moving by widening 18 kilometers of Highway 401 from the Credit River in Mississauga to Regional Road 25 in Milton. We welcome this major infrastructure project, as widening the 401 from existing six lane configuration to a combination of ten-twelve lanes will relieve congestion, allow for a more efficient transportation and flow of goods, and will help accommodate continued population and employment growth in the region. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has firmed up its 2016 traffic data, which revealed increases in many fatality categories, including the most tragic snowmobile season in 14 years. Every year, without exception, the majority of the fatalities are attributed to the “Big Four” main causal factors in road deaths. Three are linked to driver behaviour (aggressive, inattentive and impaired driving). The fourth (lack of seat belt use) applies to drivers and passengers. These behaviours were responsible for 165 (more than half) of last year’s 307 deaths with little change over the previous year. Road safety is a shared responsibility and we all need to play an active role. Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) has published a new study to investigate knowledge, attitudes and perceptions among women in Ontario and their experiences in relation to drinking and driving. Although there has consistently been a lower rate of impaired driving among women as compared to men, incidents among women have increased in the past two decades. We carry more details on page 24. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 30th annual International Roadcheck will take place June 6-8, 2017. Over a 72hour period, CVSA-certified commercial motor vehicle inspectors in jurisdictions throughout North America will conduct inspections of commercial motor vehicles and their drivers. This year’s focus is cargo securement and we encourage you to be well prepared. Coming up later this month is the 9th Annual Road Today Show & Job Fair, which will be organized at the Soccer Centre in Brampton on Saturday, May 27th. We are very pleased to share that the day has been proclaimed as Road Safety Challenge Day in the City of Brampton. The event will display educational activities focusing on distracted driving, pedestrian safety, impaired driving, commercial vehicle safety, trade show, job fair, kids & family entertainment and lots more. Entry and parking is always free. Enjoy the pleasant weather. Always remember; road safety starts with you. Shall see you at the Road Today Show! Manan Gupta Editor @guptamanan

he Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has firmed up its 2016 traffic data, which revealed increases in many fatality categories, including the most tragic snowmobile season in 14 years. The OPP is sharing the data publicly to raise awareness of the impact ongoing behaviours have on the number of deaths on Ontario roads, waterways and trails. Motor Vehicle Collision Deaths (All data applies to OPP jurisdictions only) A total of 307 people were killed in motor vehicle collisions in 2016, marking a four-year high. Every year, without exception, the majority of the fatalities are attributed to the “Big Four” main causal factors in road deaths. Last year saw little change in collisions involving large commercial transport trucks. The data is another stark reminder of the significantly greater threat these collisions pose when compared to those involving regular-sized vehicles. Collisions involving transport trucks resulted in more than three times the number of fatalities than those involving regular-sized vehicles – a statistic that holds steady from year to year. As was the case in 2015, the majority of those who died in last year’s transport truck collisions were occupants of other involved vehicles. Many of these fatalities are attributed to the Big Four. Smart Truckers are Prepared at Road Test Time!

T

he message was loud and clear, be prepared! Candidates that just plan on showing up and going through the motions have little chance of success in the competitive world of finding a job with the carriers of today. Be prepared, have your own equipment, and present yourself in a professional manner were the criteria outlined at a recent seminar for the trucking industry called Smart Trucker. The guest speaker Guy Broderick who is the recruiter and lead trainer for Apps Transportation in Mississauga outlined what he sees as big problems when applicants show up at his door. In his presentation he reviewed where many drivers go wrong when showing up for road tests with carriers. Guy who is a former Ontario Road Knight with an impeccable record and very well respected in the industry says he is looking for a certain knowledge level, professionalism, and dedication to the job that many new drivers lack when arriving for a position with the company. “People just aren’t prepared! I get drivers who show up and think we will give them a safety vest, hammer, gloves, and other equipment which they should have with them. New candidates seem to think that we will supply that for them, but those are the basics of being prepared for a road test. You are expected to bring that with you on a road test with our company” said Guy. What was also clear was that safety professionals with the company have the right to terminate a road test at any time if they feel safety is compromised on the road. Guy tells the story of a driver that was conducting a road test and began to get road rage while performing the test. He had been fine on the highway, but when

22

May 2017

driving in a city environment his attitude changed. The test was terminated part way through with the trainer driving the truck back to the yard. A road test is more than just testing driving skills with many carriers looking for applicants today. They are testing your knowledge when conducting an inspection. They are looking at how you interact with customers on the job. They are testing your professionalism and dress when showing up for work, and of course they are testing your driving skills. The most important test which may not be on paper but is part of your test is your ATTITUDE! Your attitude is the most important piece of the puzzle and success when trying to get hired on with carriers. Are you willing to learn, listen, and improve over time. Another message that came through during the recent seminar was the fact that people show up at the company not realizing that they will see a company representative while filling out an application. “We have a process that a team member is called when an applicant arrives

at our Bruce Outridge location. If is transportation available consultant with over we try to 30 years experience in meet the the industry. He is the person right host of The Lead Pedal away to get Podcast for drivers ( a feel for www.theleadpedalpodthem before cast.com), author of scheduling the books Running By an interview. The Mile, and Driven to I am always Drive, and is a trainer amazed and consultant for how many the industry. You can drivers learn more about Bruce weren’t and his work at www. expecting to bruceoutridge.com see anyone when applying,” said Guy. If you are looking for a position as a driver in transportation today realize you are expected to be able to do certain things and first impressions count. Give yourself a professional makeover before heading out into the landscape of transportation. Here are some points to go over before heading out to your next interview. • I s your resume in good order, neat and clean? • D o you have your own safety equipment? • D o you look professional? • A re you prepared to conduct a proper pre-trip inspection? • H ave you researched the company and know the type of operation they have? • D o you have the proper documents the recruiter requires? Go through this checklist before each interview or road test and you will be well on your way to being successful when applying on the job front. Thanks to Guy Broderick for being our guest speaker at the recent Smart Trucker Seminar. To learn about future seminars, visit roadtoday.com/smarttrucker

RESEARCH INDUSTRY NEWS FINDINGS

New Report: Drinking & Driving Among Women in Ontario: A Qualitative Study

T

raffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) has published a new study to investigate knowledge, attitudes and perceptions among women in Ontario and their experiences in relation to drinking and driving. The project was undertaken with support from the Ontario Women’s Health Network (OWHN) and was funded by Beer Canada through its continued support of Change the Conversation. Drinking and driving continues to be a cause for concern despite a substantial decline in

alcohol impaired driving rates in Canada over the last 30 years. Although there has consistently been a lower rate of impaired driving among women as compared to men, incidents among women have increased in the past two decades. In 2015, women account for 1 in 5 reported incidents of impaired driving whereas in 1986 they represented just 1 in 13. The goal of this research project was to explore the factors that may contribute to driving after drinking behaviours among women.

Key findings from this project will inform the development of more targeted prevention messaging that reflects the experiences of women, and more effective strategies to reach this audience to help to reverse this trend. Products emerging from the study will contain tailored preventive messaging and include several resources and fact sheets that will be shared through Change the Conversation, TIRF’s national education program on impaired driving. Ontario Budget Establishes Long-Term Infrastructure Plan, Invests in Autonomous Vehicle R&D

T

he 2017 Ontario Budget released on April 27th mostly echoes the highway infrastructure and environmental commitments the government made last year; while also recognizing a need to map out future infrastructure plans, including investments in autonomous vehicle technology research and development. On top of the 10-year infrastructure plan unveiled in the 2016 Budget, Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa announced plans to create a “Long-Term Infrastructure Plan” by the end of 2017 that describes the province’s existing infrastructure portfolio, outlines anticipated needs and proposes strategies for all of Ontario’s infrastructure plans. The map out would cover all infrastructure strategies, including roads and highways. As part of that commitment, the province will invest $80 million over five years to create the Autonomous

Vehicle (AV) Innovation Network, in partnership with Ontario Centres of Excellence. The network will capitalize on the economic potential of AVs and help the province’s transportation systems and infrastructure adapt to AV technology. The money will support industry-led AV R&D projects, create sites across the province to develop, test and validate new technology, including a Demonstration Zone in

Stratford. The Ontario Trucking Association and Canadian Trucking Alliance are actively involved in many stakeholder efforts in both Canada and the U.S on the issue of autonomous vehicle. The OTA looks forward to working with provincial officials on navigating the operational, infrastructure and regulatory considerations related to highly automated vehicles in Ontario. OTA and CTA, which are watching trade issues closely these days, also welcomed the province’s stated commitment in promoting stronger trade relations with the U.S. The budget said the province will, among other efforts, establish a Premier’s Committee on Ontario-U.S. Economic and Trade Relations and actively support the federal government’s efforts to create a positive dialogue with partners in the United States as the two nations prepare to discuss possible changes to NAFTA. In his never-ending quest for exploration of nature and knowledge of different cultures, Varinder has sought to attain celestial-cum-practical experiences through his vast journeys deep through Canada, U.S.A, Taiwan and Nepal. What has been making him rejoice in colours of life were colours of fall in the backdrop of scenic Canada countryside and the love showered upon him by one and all—family, some special friends, colleagues at work, and seniors. Varinder has a passionate link with Punjabi diaspora living in every nook and corner of the world and he keeps raising important issues concerning them. During a recent visit to Toronto, he appeared on multiple media platforms and attended numerous community events where he shared his insight on the state of affairs impacting the lives of Indo-Canadians. Believing in humility to the core, Varinder always believes in seeking blessings and wishes of his revered mentors, ever-well-wishing friends, supportive family members, teachers, guiding seniors and colleagues. “Life goes on and on and so is its journey,” says a smiling Varinder with a child-like simplicity and curiosity. His slogan in life is—Keep Walking with a Smile.

INTERNATIONAL TRUCK LAUNCHES RH SERIES

I

nternational Truck has launched the International RH Series, its new Class 8 regional haul tractor powered by the new International A26 12.4L engine, designed to deliver best-in-class uptime, improved visibility, and outstanding fuel economy. The RH Series was also designed to provide a visible difference in safety and productivity for the driver. Drivers will benefit from the redesigned side windows and mirrors which provide enhanced side visibility. The interior was conceived from a study of interaction points between the driver and truck – everything from what a driver sees to how he moves and reacts in virtually any situation. Features like a large swept-back windshield, optimized

mirror placement and an aerodynamic sloped hood for a clearer view, can all contribute to greater visibility and an improved ride in the RH Series. The RH Series was engineered to offer optimal maneuverability that enables drivers to navigate through tight city streets or cramped loading docks. The RH Series provides an inside wheel cut of up to 50 degrees delivering a curbto-curb turning radius of only 27’ 10”, helping drivers negotiate the tightest city streets. In keeping with the company’s DriverFirst product design philosophy, International undertook extensive research with truck drivers, including driver clinics that gathered input from hundreds of drivers. International

used this data to design an all-new interior, and identified multiple new and improved features that enhance driver appeal. The RH Series is powered by the new International A26 engine, a 12.4-liter engine designed to provide industryleading uptime to the Class 8 market. Built from the proven MAN D26 engine crankcase, the A26 produces up to 450 horsepower and 1,750 lb.-ft. of torque from a design that’s 600-700 lbs. lighter than a traditional 15L big bore engine. The RH Series will be offered in multiple configurations, including day cab, 56” low roof sleeper, 56” hirise sleeper, day cab with roof fairing, and 56” hi-rise sleeper with roof fairing. From a safety standpoint, the Bendix Wingman Advanced Collision Mitigation system comes standard in the RH Series – an industry first in the regional haul market. The company is taking orders and will begin production in early June. RT

Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

HELP SAVE LIVES. MOVE OVER.

PMTC to Host Next Regional Seminar in Calgary

Dr. Melissa Adler will touch on what fatigue is, what sleep apnea is, how fatigue impacts one’s ability to perform safety sensitive duties, and how you can test for fatigue.

T

he Private Motor Truck Council of Canada has announced the next regional seminar in its ongoing series of cross country educational half day conferences. The seminar in Calgary will be held on Wednesday, May 17th from 8:30am to 11:30am. It will cover three topics that are at the forefront of the Trucking Industry : Marijuana in the Workplace, Sleep Apnea and an ELD Update. “Canadian Cannabis Craze, Marijuana in the workplace” Medical Marijuana authorisations continue to increase at an alarming rate across Canada, and with the federal Liberal government announcing its intention to legalise marijuana in the near future, concerns are being raised regarding the impact this will have on employees and the workplace, especially when it comes to safety sensitive positions. The job of a Professional CMV operator is one of

these safety sensitive positions, whose workplace is shared with not only employees, but the public. Dr. Melissa Snider-Adler, Chief Medical review officer for Drivercheck Inc, will provide up to date information on Marijuana in the workplace, and what companies can do to protect themselves. “Sleep Apnea, Fatigue Management” The understanding of fatigue has been evolving quickly over the last few years. Fatigue is more readily being recognised as an impairment that is just as dangerous as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A fatigued driver simply will not have the same reaction time as a well rested driver, and fatigue is one of the leading causes of CMV accidents. Sleep Apnea is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. Studies have indicated that as many as 1/3 of CMV drivers have Sleep Apnea.

The ELD Mandate, are you ready? As of December 18th of this year, any truck operating in the USA will be required to operate with an ELD. Those who have existing technology that is not compliant with the US standard, will have until December 16th of 2019 to come into compliance. Are you ready for the mandate? When will the mandate come into effect for Canadian only carriers? In this seminar, Mike Millian, the President of the PMTC, who has been involved with the consultations with Transport Canada on the upcoming ELD mandate for Canadian carriers, will bring attendee’s up to date on the ELD mandate, where the timelines sit, and what carriers need to know to ensure they are ready and compliant with the mandate on both sides of the border. Register Now Space is limited, so people are encouraged to register early by contacting Vanessa Cox at info@pmtc. ca. You can also register online at www.pmtc.ca. Registration is just $50 for a PMTC and Drivercheck member, and $125.00 for a non-mem RT ber.

PATELLAR TENDONITISJUMPER’S KNEE

A

t first glance, truck driving may not seem like a profession that would be prone to knee injuries. However, due to the physical demands of their job, many drivers develop painful and sometimes debilitating knee conditions. A common knee injury sustained by drivers is called patellar tendonitis, which is better known as jumper’s knee. This is a condition that affects the tendon that connects your knee cap to your shin bone. The patella tendon functions to help your muscles straighten your knee like when you are walking up or down stairs or kicking a soccer ball. Patellar tendonitis is caused by repeated stress and strain on the tendon. Eventually the stress leads to small tears in the tendon itself. As more and more tears occur, inflammation and pain in the tendon start to appear. For truck drivers, the most common causes of this injury are climbing in and out of trucks, jumping off trailers and long hours operating the clutch and gas pedals. Other risk factors that may affect drivers include tight leg muscles, muscular imbalances and access weight. The first symptom of patellar tendonitis is usually pain just under

the knee cap. Initially, the pain will only be present during physical activity. The pain is usually sharp in nature but disappears once the activity is stopped. As the condition worsens, the pain may become constant. In most cases, the diagnosis of patellar tendonitis is determined based on the patient’s signs and symptoms as well as a physical exam. However, if it is still unclear, diagnostic testing such as x-rays ultrasound, and MRI may be necessary. It is important for your doctor to rule out other more serious knee conditions. Once a diagnosis of patellar tendonitis is reached, your doctor will discuss possible treatment options. The good news is that most people respond very favorably to conservative treatment and surgery is not usually required. The first mode of treatment is to rest and reducing the amount of strain on the knee. Next, ice and anti-inflammatory medications are used to reduce the swelling in the tendon. Massage and gentle stretching are also effective to reduce the pain and irritation. Finally, in the later stages of treatment your doctor may recommend strengthening exercises and body mechanic modification all of which

an agronomist, Dr Christopher H. Singh physical therapist Chiropractor, runs Trans or chiropractor can Canada Chiropractic at 230 help you with. If Truck Stop in Woodstock, all else fails and Ont. He can be reached no significant at 519-421-2024 E.mail: improvement is chris_singh@sympatico.ca observed after 10 to 12 months of conservative treatment, surgery may be considered. The goal of surgery is to repair any tears or remove severely damaged sections of the tendon. Although you can not completely prevent this condition, you can reduce your risk of developing it. For starters, avoid activities that may put access strain on the patellar tendon such as jumping off of your trailer. In addition, try to use proper mechanics when getting in and out of your cab i.e. “Three point technique.” Lastly, try to maintain a healthy body weight and perform lower body stretches regularly. As you can see, patellar tendonitis is not a life threatening injury, however, if left untreated, it could develop into a very painful and debilitating condition. Just try to keep some of these simple hints in mind and you will be well on your way to having pain free knees. Until next time, drive safely! RT
