Ontario’s Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca is pledging to improve winter highway maintenance across the province after an Auditor General report found service levels performed by contractors has declined and available equipment for removing snow and ice from roads is insufficient. We hope appropriate measures are strictly put in place to clear highways at the earliest during and after a storm to make it safer for motorists. Each day some 500 children die worldwide from road traffic crashes, thousands more are injured and the situation is only getting worse, the United Nations has warned as it launched #SaveKidsLives, a global campaign to generate action to make streets safe for children. We are happy to extend our support and will be sharing road safety initiatives with the families at the Road Today Show as a part of Road Safety Challenge 2015 towards making Ontario’s roads the safest in the world. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 28th annual International Roadcheck will take place June 2-4, 2015. Approximately 10,000 CVSA-certified local, state, provincial and federal inspectors in jurisdictions across North America will perform truck and bus inspections. The special emphasis for this year is cargo securement. While checking for compliance with safe loading regulations is always part of roadside inspections, CVSA is highlighting cargo safety as a reminder to drivers and carriers. The proper loading and securing of cargo on vehicles is a matter of public safety. For many types of loads, particularly those that are not sealed or otherwise inaccessible to the driver, regulations require the driver to stop within the first several miles of a trip and recheck the tie downs and other load-securing equipment. We urge you to follow all safety regulations and don’t put precious life on risk. With trespassing remaining the leading cause of rail-related fatalities in Canada, a public awareness campaign stressing the deadly risks of trespassing on railway tracks and property has been launched. nternational Truck has announced the launch of its industry-leading, open architecture remote diagnostics system, OnCommand Connection, to the Canadian market. With the recent addition of ISAAC Instruments and the support of existing providers, OnCommand Connection offers Canadian customers more options for their telematics data and hardware. “OnCommand Connection demonstrates our commitment to uptime and our Canadian customers while proving our ability to be the integration leader,” said Mike Cerilli, vice president and general manager, Navistar Connected Vehicle Business. “We are excited to have ISAAC on board, and we are working with even more telematics providers in Canada to provide customers the solutions they need.” OnCommand Connection works with a customer’s existing telematics provider, pulling diagnostic-related data to create easy-to-understand vehicle health reports. With increased visibility into the operational health of the vehicle, customers are empowered to understand the severity of vehicle issues and determine the appropriate actions—ultimately leading to increased uptime. “The prompt, clear description of vehicle fault codes we receive from OnCommand Connection allows the maintenance staff to communicate with drivers, prevent equipment damage and maintain high customer satisfaction levels,” said Jim

olvo Trucks’ powerful Volvo VNX 630 model, designed for high gross weight applications and heavy-haul tasks like heavy equipment hauling, oil and gas delivery and timber transport, is now offered with a tridem rear axle group, offering maximum traction and an increased payload for customers. CVSA’S INTERNATIONAL ROADCHECK TO TAKE PLACE JUNE 2-4, 2015

T

he Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 28th annual International Roadcheck will take place June 2-4, 2015. International Roadcheck is a 72-hour period when approximately 10,000 CVSA-certified local, state, provincial and federal inspectors in jurisdictions across North America perform truck and bus inspections. International Roadcheck is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world, with nearly 17 trucks or buses inspected, on average, every minute in Canada, the United States and Mexico during a 72-hour period. During the annual threeday event, CVSA-certified inspectors conduct compliance, enforcement and educational initiatives targeted at various elements of motor carrier, vehicle, driver, and cargo safety and security. Each year, International Roadcheck places special emphasis on a category of violations. The special emphasis for International Roadcheck 2015 is cargo securement. While checking for compliance with safe loading regulations is always part of roadside inspections, CVSA is highlighting cargo safety as a reminder to drivers and carriers. The proper loading and securing of cargo on vehicles is a matter of public safety. For many types of loads, particularly those that are not sealed or otherwise inaccessible to the driver, regulations require the driver to stop within the first several miles of a trip and re-check the tie downs and other load-securing equipment. Inspectors will primarily be conducting the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is the most thorough roadside inspection. It is a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both the driver and vehicle. Drivers will be asked to provide items such as their license, endorsements, medical card and hours-ofservice documentation, and will be checked for seat belt usage and the use of alcohol and/or drugs. The vehicle inspection includes checking items such as the braking system, coupling devices, exhaust system, frame, fuel system, lights, safe loading, steering mechanism, drive line, suspension, tires, van and open-top trailer bodies, wheels and rims, windshield wipers, and emergency exits

s a professional driver you face a lot of stress and pressure each day just trying to do your job. Maneuvering through congested highways with aggressive car drivers darting around you can be difficult since all too often everyone is in a rush to get where they are going. It may make you want to gamble a bit by taking unnecessary risks. But your risk goes up exponentially for each violation you receive. The seriousness of violations is more than monetary, unless you're willing to pay with your life. And we're not just talking about your life. When you gamble, you are also gambling your family's future and the future of many other innocent parties. Don't take that gamble, it's just not worth the risk.

PREVENTING TRUCK FIRES

T

he National Fire Prevention Association reports that truck fires are often a result of mechanical or electrical failures. When you inspect your vehicle regularly, you can catch some of the problems that lead to a fire and correct them. Let’s look at four main areas where a fire can start.

Electrical system Electrical fires can start from malfunctioning or worn electrical parts in the cab, sleeper or engine compartment. Watch for loose, worn or chafed wiring. Make sure that all electrical modifications are done by trained technicians and that you don’t overload the circuits in your cab! Engine When mechanical components (e.g, in the suspension, exhaust, or fuel systems) are cracked, loose or missing, they can cause friction in the engine and provide the heat source for a fire. Leaks from mechanical failures can provide fuel to help ignite a fire as well. Cargo Cargo fires are relatively rare, but they can occur because of defective or improperly installed cargo heaters, spontaneous combustion, or exposure to a source of fire such as a cigarette. Tires A tire fire might seem like one of the easiest kinds of vehicle fires to access and put out, but it’s a very dangerous kind of fire to be near. Tires are pressurized, and anything pressurized has a tendency to explode when it’s heated. In addition, tires tend to reignite if they are not cooled sufficiently. One reason for tire fires is because of imbalanced cargo. The cargo puts pressure on the tires and can eventually start a fire. However, the second reason is more common and can easily be prevented: Improper inflation Improper inflation is the cause of most tire failures and affects tire life, jeopardizes safety, and impacts fuel economy. The American Trucking Association’s Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) calculates that tires underinflated by 10% wear out 9% to 16% faster than properly inflated tires.

WOMEN WITH DRIVE LEADERSHIP SUMMIT TO RETURN FOR SECOND YEAR

rucking HR Canada’s Women with Drive Leadership Summit will be back in Toronto for a return engagement on March 3, 2016. About 135 delegates attended this year’s inaugural event, which shed new light on the steps to recruit, retain and mentor women in Canada’s trucking industry. “Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback we received, it’s clear that those who attended the summit want even more information to help address some of the industry’s most pressing recruiting and retention challenges,” says Angela Splinter, CEO of Trucking HR Canada. “We’re encouraging men and women throughout the industry to save March 3, 2016 in their calendars, and join us as we build on the event’s success.” Speakers during this year’s Women with Drive Summit

included Brenda Andress, commissioner of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, and Dr. Kellie Leitch, minister of labour and minister of status of women. The Conference Board of Canada projects the need for another 25,000 to 33,000 for-hire truck drivers as early as 2020. While women represent 48% of Canada’s available labour pool, they currently account for just 3% of the nation’s truck drivers, mechanics, technicians and cargo workers. The summit is part of Trucking HR Canada’s three-year action plan to help tackle the shortage of women in the trucking industry. Other commitments involve creating mentorship programs, identifying best practices, and developing workplace tools and procedures for inclusive workplaces. RT

TRAILCON LEASING “ROCKS ‘N’ ROLLS” TO ADVANCED NEW FACILITY IN BRAMPTON TRAILCON LEASING HAS MADE THE BIG MOVE FROM ITS LONG-TIME HOME IN MISSISSAUGA TO AN IMPRESSIVE NEW FACILITY AT 15 SPAR DRIVE IN NEIGHBOURING BRAMPTON. AND THEY TOOK THEIR ICONIC ROCKS WITH THEM.

T

railcon is a Canadian leader in the trucking industry in trailer rental, leasing, and maintenance. Over the last 19 years, employees, visitors, and passersby have come and gone at 6950 Kenderry Gate in Mississauga, in the heart of the Ontario Transportation Centre. Much has changed, but one thing remained: the prominent rocks embedded with the Trailcon logo, welcoming people to the building. Years ago, the area around Kenderry Gate was only partially developed. With Pearson International Airport nearby, and the Trailcon facility sitting in line with an existing flight path, restrictions prohibited brightly lit exterior signage. Trailcon President Alan Boughton came up with the idea of using a rock, similar to those he was used to seeing when driving through Caledon East, Ontario. And so, in mid-April, the rocks made the move to Brampton, along with hundreds of trailers and the nearly 100 staff and technicians who work out of Trailcon’s head office and Greater Toronto Area service facility. Trailcon began operating in 1992 with just one employee: President Alan Boughton. Today, more than 60 administrative, sales, and operations staff are employed across Canada, with an additional 65 mechanics. The last 19 years have also seen Trailcon’s own fleet grow from 2,000 units to more than 6,500, which service for-hire carriers, private fleets, and some of the largest grocery and retail chains in the country. Its dedicated fleet maintenance operation looks after more than 15,000 Trailcon and customerowned units across Canada. The massive Spar Drive facility is more than three times larger than the Kenderry Gate site, with 28,000 square feet sitting on a 15-acre property. Trailcon invested $22 million in acquiring the land and constructing the building. The standout property includes parking for more than 400 trailers (strategically grouped for easy access and quick release) and a sheltered work bay where mechanics can work comfortably on up to 41 units. location is five times larger, with extra capacity for more bulk shipments - and improved pricing for customers. his LRT is a new public transit project, led by Metrolinx, that will bring 23 kilometres of rapid transit to Mississauga and Brampton. The LRT line is proposed to have 26 stops, including three stops within downtown Mississauga and two stops in downtown Brampton. The service will move more people faster through these corridors than the existing bus service. Through the Moving Ontario Forward plan the government is investing in priority rapid transit projects that will connect to the GO Transit network and other transit systems across the Greater Toronto

enworth has introduced a new remote, keyless entry system as an option for the Kenworth T680 and T880. Kenworth’s remote keyless entry provides two key fobs programmed to lock and un-lock the doors. I

recently attended an event for entrepreneurs. These events are more like wine and cheese parties and you just mingle around hoping to catch someone’s eye and start a conversation. This is the reason so many people look like stalkers at these events as you are trying to catch the eye of a person you have no connection with and then hope it will break into a great friendship that results in business. Yeah right! It’s not that the events are good or bad but the way people approach these events in their minds. Even though this story is about an entrepreneurial event the same types of events go on in every industry including transportation. So as we wander around looking for someone to talk to you can see people coming. I call this speed dating for businesses. My technique is to find a spot at the bar and

watch the world go by. It’s not much of a networking technique but people will always come to you so it saves me walking around bug eyed. At this particular event I had found what I call my home and was talking with people I know as they walked by. Eventually a new person came up to me and we began a conversation. With a true interest in what we were both doing in business we began to forget those around us. Often times there will be other people standing in the wings of any conversation hoping to hear something that will allow them to interrupt and start a conversation. This is fine however there is a time to do this, and this lady missed her mark. As I was talking about the training division of my business to this business owner, things were going good and we decided to exchange business cards for future opportunities. This lady who had not been part of the conversation to this point, but felt she could offer similar training stuck her arm in-between us with her card waving about. As she did this she was mentioning that she delivers the same training but also in French. Both of us looked at each other with dismay not sure where she had even come from. She may have had the criteria required to help this business but she just shot herself in the foot with her approach. Remember that first impressions count! She did a number of things wrong with her approach. First when two people are in an in-depth conversation then it is best to leave them alone unless it is very important. Even if you have the same service it is best to be part of the discussion and respect others that are already talking. Marketing and networking are about both of you getting your name out there, but there also is a fine line that can easily be crossed without some restraint. It would have been better for that lady to start another conversation after we had stopped talking. Don’t give your business a bad name by marketing too hard, it may leave a bad impression! @roadtoday

FREIGHTLINER TRUCKS ADDS NEW DRIVER-FRIENDLY OPTIONS FOR CASCADIA AND CASCADIA EVOLUTION MODELS

ew options from Freightliner Trucks for the Freightliner Cascadia and Cascadia Evolution will add to the driver’s overall comfort, safety and productivity. New options for the Cascadia and Cascadia Evolution include: Bose Ride system II truck seat suspension. Studies have shown that almost half of all truck drivers suffer from fatigue and pain levels serious enough to interfere with their work. Featuring advanced technologies including sensors and a powerful regenerative electromagnetic motor, the system counteracts the shaking and jarring potentially experienced by drivers on the road. Introduced earlier this year, this next-generation Bose Ride system features a Ride Control selector, allowing drivers to customize their ride; enhanced seat-top ergonomics for improved driver comfort; and a new built-in driver orientation module to help first-time users understand how to get the most from the system. SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) from Bendix CVS. Improper tire inflation both increases tire-related costs and has a detrimental impact on fuel efficiency. SmarTire TPMS

shows real-time pressure and temperature status on a dash display, instantly informing the driver if there is a tire problem on the road. The sensor is mounted inside of the tire on the wheel to capture accurate tire temperature and pressure and to protect the sensor from damage. Flat Screen TV mount with antenna. The Cascadia and Cascadia Evolution roomy cabs offer features such as a plush memory foam mattress, ample storage and waist-level refrigerator. CARRIER TRANSICOLD COMMEMORATES 75 YEARS OF ROAD TRANSPORT REFRIGERATION

C

arrier Transicold is celebrating a double anniversary this year: 75 years of Carrier road transport refrigeration innovation and the 45th anniversary of the Carrier Transicold business. Carrier Transicold helps improve global transport and shipping of temperature controlled cargoes with a complete line of equipment for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers, and is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. “Carrier’s history encompasses more than a century of innovation in air conditioning and refrigeration, and pioneering achievements in truck and trailer refrigeration have been an integral part of this story,” said David Appel, president, Carrier Transicold & Refrigeration Systems. “Now in our 75th year of providing products for road transport refrigeration, we continue

to drive the industry forward with highperformance, environmentally sustainable refrigeration solutions.” The Carrier Transicold brand was formed in 1970, when Carrier acquired the California-based transport refrigeration equipment maker Transicold Co. and combined it with its Special Products Division, which had experience in trucking applications extending back to 1940. The business was responsible for all types of transport refrigeration, including oceangoing container refrigeration that it had pioneered in 1968. Carrier’s first foray into truck refrigeration in 1940 included the application of its model 7K refrigeration compressors in early systems. Although haulers had experimented with mechanical refrigeration since the 1920s, most transport refrigeration methods by 1940 still used ice/salt or dry-ice/gravity flow refrigeration systems.

The initial success with the rugged 7K compressor led to the development of a complete truck refrigeration system for trucks and trailers, Carrier’s Type 68D unit. Available in two sizes, the Type 68D used a four-cylinder gasoline engine coupled to a high-speed compressor. The relatively compact and adjustment-free unit boasted minimal moving parts, making it durable enough for the often rough conditions encountered by refrigerated trucks with bodies ranging up to 35 feet in length. In contrast to those early systems, today’s transport refrigeration units provide cooling power to haul perishable and frozen loads in 53-foot trailers, intermodal containers and railcars ranging up to 72 feet in interior length. Recent innovations from Carrier Transicold, driven by Tier 4 engine emissions regulations, have further improved fuel economy and reduced carbon RT emissions. @roadtoday

PREVENTABLE RAIL CROSSING TRAGEDIES CONTINUE TO AFFECT CANADIANS

A

ny accident has the potential to be a tragedy. But preventable accidents are true tragedies, and virtually all rail crossing accidents can be prevented. Crossing accidents represented one of the most serious types of rail incidents in 2014, with 26 per cent of these accidents resulting in either serious or fatal injuries. These tragedies can be prevented simply by obeying the crossing protection that is in place. Trains cannot stop quickly and they cannot swerve to avoid a collision. There were 180 crossing accidents in Canada in 2014, with 21 of these resulting in fatalities and 25 resulting in serious injuries. Despite the presence of protective devices, most crossing accidents occur at automated public crossings protected by bells, lights and sometimes crossing arms. Non-automated crossings are protected by warning signs that alert motorists that they are approaching a railway track, and that a train may

approach the crossing at any time. “Disobeying railway crossing signals is dangerous and illegal, said CN Police Chief Stephen Covey. “We will not tolerate that individuals put their lives and those of others at risk. Through a combination of education and enforcement, CN Police aim to change attitudes and behaviours towards rail crossing safety. But safety is very much a shared responsibility if we are to reduce accidents. The public must also do their part in observing the rules at all times.” CN Police work year-round to reduce crossing accidents by educating motorists about crossing safety, and enforcing provincial highway traffic laws regarding crossing safety across our network. In 2015, CN Police will be attending hundreds of crossings across Canada, handing out information on crossing safety and ticketing any transgressors they encounter. PRIVATE MOTOR TRUCK COUNCIL ALIGNS WITH TRUCK TRAINING SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION OF ONTARIO

T

he Truck Training Schools Association of Ontario (TTSAO) continues to grow in all areas of its membership. Last month they have added the Private Motor Truck Council of Canada (PMTC) as an associate member and strategic partner. Historically, carrier members of PMTC have been insulated from the driver shortage but executives of PMTC are starting to see signs that hiring competent drivers is becoming an issue. The TTSAO will be a conduit for PMTC members to consider hiring TTSAO certified drivers. Yvette Lagrois, President of the TTSAO says. “It is an exciting time at TTSAO and we are very pleased that the PMTC sees value in working together on the many issues we are challenged with in our industry.”

“Carrier members of PMTC will find that the TTSAO schools produce an excellent entry-level driver that will fit in nicely with the private sector. It is our goal to work with associations like PMTC and the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) on key industry initiatives,” she added. The TTSAO has had a solid working relationship with the OTA for years and there are a number of TTSAO schools who are members of both associations. In other news, TTSAO continues to work diligently with the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities on the Mandatory Entry Level Driver Training project, as well as working with SERCO (Drivetest) Centers to improve how commercial road tests are delivered. THE MUMPS I

n the past few months the mumps have been a hot topic in mainstream media. Mostly because of small outbreak of cases that affected several NHL players. I am sure most of you saw the images of Sidney Crosby’s swollen face either in the news papers or on television. The mumps is simply a viral infection that most often affects the parotid glands in the face. The parotid glands are salivary glands that are located just below and in front of the ears. One or both parotid glands can be affected. Until modern vaccinations, the mumps was a very common condition in North America. However, since the introduction of routine vaccinations, the number of cases has significantly dropped. Thus, the probability of catching the mumps is very low. The mumps virus is usually spread from person to person through infected saliva. Therefore, it is important that you let your doctor’s office know that you suspect the mumps before going to office so that they can take the necessary precautions. Also, cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing and avoid sharing eating utensils and the like. The symptoms associated with the mumps can vary from person to person. Some individuals that are infected with the mumps may not exhibit any signs or symptoms at all. Others may develop mild to severe symptoms. In most cases the symptoms develop about two to three weeks after exposure to the virus. Symptoms may include swollen parotid glands, fever, headache, weakness and fatigue. The most common and well known symptom is

swollen salivary glands which cause the cheeks to puff out giving the characteristic swollen face associated with the mumps. Other less common symptoms include severe weakness and fatigue and loss of appetite. In very rare cases, the mumps may cause inflammation in other parts of the body such as the testicles in males and ovaries and breasts in females. Swelling of the brain and spinal cord have also been documented. It is very important for pregnant women to avoid contact with a person infected with the mumps. Although the scientific evidence is not conclusive, there is an association between the mumps and miscarriages. If you suspect that you have contracted the mumps, it is important to consult with a doctor. It is important to rule out any other condition that could be causing similar symptoms. For example, inflamed tonsils or a blocked salivary gland may produce signs symptoms that may be mistaken for the mumps. There is no specific treatment for the mumps. Just like other viral infections, antibiotics are not effective. The virus must naturally just run its course. In most cases, patients recover fully within two weeks. Most experts agree that you are no long contagious one week after being diagnosed with the mumps. Over the counter medications such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen may be used to help ease the pain and symptoms. However, it is best to consult with physician before taking and medications.
