With the growing popularity of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and other social media sites, it’s important to be careful about how much information we share, where, and with whom. Canadians lose millions of dollars every year from these kinds of vicious attacks, so be on the lookout at all times.

Thanks for your continued patronage to our award-winning magazine serving Canada’s multicultural transportation industry! Inside you will find the latest developments and updates related to the industry plus all the regular columns and features. The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) and the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which enables both groups to forge a mutually beneficial relationship for their respective members as well as co-marketing educational events to attract leaders in the trucking industry. This agreement will enhance the relationship between OTA member carriers and transportation companies in the South Asian community. This is a first step towards more opportunities to collaborate and we heartily welcome this announcement. The Government of Canada is working closely with the Government of Ontario and Municipalities to invest in important transit initiatives that will strengthen communities across Ontario by growing the middle-class, fostering long-term prosperity and getting Canadians to their daily activities on time and home at the end of the day. We welcome the recent announcements and projects towards building an affordable and efficient public transit infrastructure that meets the needs of Canadians now and for generations to come. March is Fraud Prevention Month and we encourage all readers to get informed about fraud and how they can protect themselves. Fraud is a crime that threatens every Canadian, regardless of their education, age or income. From January 2014 to December 2016, it is estimated that Canadians lost over $290 million to fraudsters. reightliner Trucks has begun production on its new Cascadia. Designed and engineered with an emphasis on six Real Cost of Ownership solutions the new Cascadia sets the benchmark for fuel efficiency, safety, connectivity, quality, uptime and driver experience. The new Cascadia (equipped with AeroX and Integrated Detroit Powertrain (IDP) including a GHG17 DD15 engine, DT12 with Intelligent Powertrain Management (IPM4) and 2.16 direct drive axle ratio) boasts up to an 8-percent fuel economy increase over a similarly spec’d 2016 Cascadia Evolution. The new Detroit rear axles have features such as lower sump volume, gear-set coating, friction reducing gear cutting and optional Axle Lubrication Management that reduces parasitic loss and improves fuel economy. Standard enhancements such as an upper door seal, ellipticalshaped mirrors, sloped hood, bumper with integrated air deflector and integrated antennas all minimize drag. The optional Aero and AeroX packages provide additional aerodynamic benefits to manage airflow, including a low ground clearance bumper with flexible air dam, longer side extenders, lower chassis fairings, drive wheel covers and proprietarydesigned drive wheel fairings. The new Cascadia is loaded with improvements ranging from the

layout of gauges and switches in the driver compartment to features inside the sleeper area, including a new Driver Loft configuration. Available in a variety of cab configurations, the new Cascadia is all about customizable livingspace options that address the realities of professional drivers while they’re on the road. The sleeper area has been redesigned to include more cabinets, as well as larger spaces that can accommodate standard appliances. For entertainment, a sturdy television swivel bracket holds up to a 26” flat panel TV for movietheater-like viewing. Double-bunk and a new Driver Loft option is also available that incorporates a unique folding workspace/dinette with a full-size Murphy style bed. A new cargo shelf option allows drivers to store containers or duffle bags easily. New splayed frame rails create more room in the engine compartment to allow technicians easy access for maintenance tasks, and most electronic control units are now stored securely in the cab in the new eVault for easier convenience and

protection from the elements. The optional Detroit Assurance 4.0 suite of safety systems includes Active Brake Assist that now provides full braking on stationary objects, moving pedestrian warning & partial braking, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Departure Warning with optional video capture. Customers will benefit from the proprietary connectivity platform introduced by Detroit exclusively for the new Cascadia. The new platform, which will use cellular service from AT&T, will facilitate the delivery of current Detroit Connect features, such as Virtual Technician remote diagnostic service, as well as new features designed to provide deeper insights on fuel efficiency and safety performance. TRANSIT INFRASTRUCTURE

Governments of Canada and Ontario invest in public transit in Brampton 29 new projects across Ontario to benefit from the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund

T

he governments of Canada and Ontario are making investments to create jobs and grow the middle class, while building a foundation for a strong, sustainable economic future. Investing in public infrastructure supports efficient and affordable transit services that help Canadians to safely get to and from work, school and other activities on time. On February 10th, Hon’ Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, on behalf of the Hon’ Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Hon’ Steven Del Duca, Ontario Minister of Transportation and Linda Jeffrey, Mayor of Brampton, announced six newly approved projects that will benefit Brampton under the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF). The federal government is providing up to 50 per cent of funding for these projects—just over $32.4 million. Local MPs, MPPs and Council members were also in attendance. The list of projects includes significant investments across the City of Brampton. For example, a project to extend the Züm Bovaird transit service along Airport Road will improve mobility, security and reliability on this important transit corridor. Also, a project to expand the Sandalwood Transit Facility will help support the forecasted growth of transit fleet services and improve service reliability. Other projects include the acquisition of 20 replacement buses

and three new articulated buses, and the expansion of the automated vehicle monitoring system to most of Brampton’s transit fleet. In addition, the expansion and replacement of transit shelters will improve accessibility and safety for transit users. In addition to these projects, Minister Bains and Minister Del Duca also announced that 23 public transit projects will benefit 12 other communities across Ontario. This investment is part of an agreement between Canada and Ontario for the Public Transit Infrastructure RT Fund.

WESTERN STAR TRUCKS BEGINS ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

W

estern Star Trucks kicked off its yearlong 50th-anniversary celebration at its annual dealer meeting held last month. Western Star will mark its 50th anniversary of manufacturing legendarily awesome trucks with a year’s worth of special events, truck show appearances and an enhanced website. The first Western Star trucks were made in 1967 in Kelowna, British Columbia, to serve the mining, lumber and oil industries. Those jobs are hard on a truck so Western Star made its trucks even tougher, hand building each model to ensure they met the highest standards, and adding features to make the driver more comfortable, safer and productive. Now owned by Daimler Trucks North America and manufactured in Portland, Ore., and Cleveland, N.C., Western Star continues to set the global standard for vocational and work trucks. It also entered the on-highway market in 2015 with the 5700XE, its first aerodynamic truck. “50 years is nothing short of extraordinary, but we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our customers and their desire to have the most badass trucks on the road. Whether it’s the versatility of the 4900, the ruggedness of the 6900 or the beauty and efficiency of the 5700 our customers count on the quality that Western Star is known for,” said Kelley Platt, president, Western Star Trucks. “While we remember and honor our roots in celebrating this historic milestone it is important that we continue to push the boundaries of innovation and toughness. Please join us this year as we celebrate together!” For more information, go to: www.westernstar. com/50 RT

Did you know? About 1,000 snowplows and salt/sand spreaders are used to clear nearly 17,000 km of Ontario’s highways.

Snowplows begin working when there is 2 cm of snow or slush on the highway. Road salt helps clear ice and snow until the temperature drops below -12OC.

In colder temperatures, sand is used to improve traction. Please be patient. Crews work hard to clear the highways during and after winter storms to make driving safer.

New Genuine Mack Engine Oil Extends Drain Intervals, Reduces Customer Costs

M

ack Trucks has announced extended engine oil drain intervals for customers using its newly formulated genuine Mack Engine Oil EOS-4.5. Depending on the application, oil drain intervals have been extended by up to 15,000 miles compared with previous formulations, helping reduce customer maintenance costs. Introduced as the factory fill in Mack’s 2017 engines, genuine Mack Engine Oil EOS-4.5 also extends drain intervals for all 2011 and newer Mack engines. “There is a

misconception that Mack Engine Oil EOS-4.5 is simply a rebranded version of the other engine oils on the shelf, and nothing could be further from the truth,” said Scott Barraclough, Mack technology product manager. “Mack Engine Oil EOS-4.5 is a proprietary formula that is tested and approved with Mack equipment, which allows us to extend drain intervals.” With Mack Engine Oil EOS-4.5, drain intervals have been extended to 60,000, 50,000 and 40,000 miles for long-haul, regional-haul and heavy-haul applications respectively. During the life of a Mack truck, these extensions allow

customers to skip between four and 16 oil drains, helping save hundreds of dollars per year per truck. Mack Engine Oil EOS-4.5 is available in 10W30 and 15W40 weights and meets Mack’s stringent EOS-4.5 engine oil standard, which offers protection above and beyond the new American Petroleum Institute (API) CK-4 specification by requiring enhanced performance for oil oxidation and oil aeration control. It is also formulated with a lower viscosity, helping improve fuel efficiency, even under high loads and high ambient temperatures. Mack Engine Oil EOS-4.5 can be used anywhere API CK-4 oils are recommended and is also fully backward compatible with all API CJ-4 applications. RT

Attracting Youth to the Industry…time to stop talking about it and take action

I

joined this industry in 1990 at the age of 18, even then, I was an abnormality. Most of the drivers were nearing or above 40, and attracting youth to the industry was a challenge. What has changed in the last 27 years? The average age of a truck driver is now nearing 50, per a 2014 study by the Conference Board of Canada, even less youth are coming into the industry, and at the High School level, for the most part, our Industry is simply nonexistent as far as a potential career goes. For years, we as an industry have laid blame on the inability of being able to attract youth to our Industry to almost anyone we could, blaming Guidance Counsellors for not promoting us, the government for not declaring us a skilled trade, the media for covering only the negative side of the industry, and on it goes…..for the most part we complained to each other with in the industry…. however we did not promote ourselves outside of our own circle or find a way to connect with the youth….is that everyone else’s issue, or is that our own? It is time we quit complaining about the youth we can’t attract, come together as an Industry and find a way to attract them ourselves. I recently attended the TTSAO striving for excellence in Training Conference. One of the panels was entitled “Rebuilding the Image of Trucking”. The panel consisted of professionals outside of the Trucking Industry. The purpose was to give attendee’s the view of the Industry from those not directly involved in it. The comments from the panelists need to serve as an eyeopener. Jacquie Latham, a consultant with the Ontario School Counsellors Association, commented “Students have no perception of the Industry as they have no real knowledge of it”. No knowledge of it is a sad statement on our ability to promote our Industry to them…. no perception is a good thing, as that means the canvas is open for us to get our messaging out there and promote the opportunities within our Industry. Alyson Truax, Employment Ontario Specialist, York Region, indicated that a lot of the people who come to her with knowledge

Mike Millian is the of the industry see nothing but President of Private road blocks in front of them, be it Motor Truck Council age, long periods away from home, of Canada (PMTC), the long hours, separation from family. only Canadian asAlyson and Jacquie also indicated sociation dedicated to that we as an Industry need to be the interests of private better at promoting ourselves through fleet operators. The the channels that people in todays PMTC provides forums society will consume and share with for fleet operators and their network of friends. It was made industry stakeholders apparent that when the industry to exchange views and did contact schools or employment resolve issues together, offices, for the most part they still and is at the forefront provided brochures and pamphlets. in representing protectPeople today, especially the ing and promoting their youth, simply are not interested. To interests. For more attract the youth, we were advised info, visit www.pmtc. to try things like creating a link to ca or call 1-877-501a portal on our website, promote PMTC (7682) the benefits of the industry, the many job opportunities, ensure it has pictures, video’s, short and interesting stories. We need to use social media more to attract attention to our companies and our industry. We need to attend career fairs, go to our local schools, promote ourselves to the drivers of tomorrow. We need to change our way of thinking and change the way we operate our businesses….society and the youth are not going to change to suit our needs…so we better change to suit theirs, otherwise we will be left in the rear view mirror…. The PMTC plans on taking a leading role in this initiative. With the guidance of our Young Leaders Group, we will explore ways to connect with School Guidance counsellors, develop a social media marketing plan to target youth, update and provide links to our website that will promote the industry…we need to start somewhere, and we plan to do our part. If you have ideas to share, please reach out to our office, we will be glad to listen. March 2017

Kenworth - T680 Advantage 76-inch Sleeper

Kenworth Enhances Predictive Cruise Control for T680 and T880 with 2017 Engines

K

enworth has announced an update to its Predictive Cruise Control functionality available for the Kenworth T680 and T880 with the new 2017 PACCAR MX-11, PACCAR MX-13 and Cummins X15 engines. “This update, which was made in conjunction with the launch of the new 2017 emission engines, provides our customers up to a 1 percent improvement in fuel economy over the performance of the current version of our Predictive Cruise Control, said Patrick Dean, Kenworth chief engineer. Kenworth Predictive Cruise Control combines GPS with cruise control to deliver optimum fuel economy. Predictive Cruise Control optimizes cruising speed based on topographical GPS data inputs. As the truck enters certain types of

terrain, such as rolling hills, the system modulates cruising speed to optimize performance. For example, as the truck ascends and crests a hill, Predictive Cruise Control will allow the vehicle speed to drop slightly

below the set cruise speed. This boosts fuel economy since the truck is now using momentum instead of fuel to maintain set cruise speed. RT

Get Ready for Your Carrier of Choice

I

f the perfect carrier knocked on your door tomorrow, would you be ready for the opportunity? You may wonder why I ask such a question, but it does make a difference. Here is the issue, I talk to drivers all the time and many of them are in search of the perfect carrier. They want great pay, they want great equipment, and they want to be respected. We all want those things from a carrier but it just doesn’t happen because you have your licence. It takes hard work, dedication to professionalism, and building a brand that will create opportunities for you. I recently attended a conference for the Truck Training School Association of Ontario where much of the topics focused on the image of the driver. One of the messages coming from those in the room is that carriers are looking to attract the right people and not just anyone that comes along with a licence. With the changes in the testing and training requirements from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation coming into effect on July 1, 2017 with the Mandatory Entry Level Training Program (M.E.L.T.) drivers will need to have a basic amount of training to get their feet in the door of a carrier. The new training standards have forced the MTO to change their testing standards which will make the driving test harder for new applicants. All of this is in place to make the roads safer and ensure drivers have basic training when receiving their licence. How does that help you get the perfect job? Carriers are looking for professionalism. The new standards will ensure a driver has the basic training required to pass the road test. It’s a good first step but it won’t get you to the final destination. Carriers want professionals! The way to become a professional is to keep stepping up above what is called for and learn to be the best you can be. Many new drivers try to get by with the minimum amount of training and testing because often they don’t like the school part of the training program. Those classes teach you the

The better consultant with over you learn the items taught in those 30 years experience in classes the better a driver you will be. the industry. He is the Sadly many drivers don’t take that host of The Lead Pedal information seriously and lose the Podcast for drivers opportunities that will be presented (www.theleadpedalpodto them. cast.com), author of Where are you? the books Running By If you are someone looking at The Mile, and Driven to the industry then you need decent Drive, and is a trainer training. Even with the new M.E.L.T. and consultant for standards many feel it may not be the industry. You can enough. Insurance have ratings for learn more about Bruce new drivers that start with a 200 and his work at www. hour course which are already out on bruceoutridge.com the market with certified schools such as those at the TTSAO. If insurance companies already have their policies set at 200 hours the new standards may still not be enough. So go to a certified school and get proper training or you really will be wasting your money and your time. You can start by visiting www. ttsao.com. If you already have your licence but have found carriers won’t talk to you because you weren’t certified by a recognized training facility then here is an idea to try. Call a certified school and ask about upgrading your training with certificates. You shouldn’t have to take the driving test again but many have what they call refresher courses that can upgrade you and get you certified. They will assess you and upgrade you where required. Once you have your certifications you will be able to start applying at those carriers that wouldn’t look at your resume previously. The final piece is to keep learning and upgrading yourself even when the formal training stops. Always try to improve your efficiency, get better with trip planning, and keep up with technology. To be successful in trucking it means continually learning and improving. If you can do that you will have a successful career, I did! March 2017

any of us love sharing on social networks — whether that’s pictures of our family, information about an upcoming vacation, or updates on a new fitness trend we’re trying out. But with so much personal information out there, it’s easy for scammers to get hold of your money or steal your identity. With the growing popularity of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and other social media sites, it’s important to be careful about how much information we share, where, and with whom. Canadians lose millions of dollars every year from these kinds of vicious attacks, so be on the lookout at all times. Protect yourself by being mindful when using social media: 1. Be password savvy. Create strong passwords and ensure that they’re unique and challenging so scammers won’t be able to guess them. A good password is one that’s easy to remember but hard to guess. Make it a habit to change your passwords regularly and use different ones for different sites. Don’t save them to your

Remember, just because you post something in a private group or with advanced privacy settings doesn’t mean that someone won’t take a screen shot and share it.

4. Be careful where you click. There are many attention-grabbing links, photos and articles that pop-up, but don’t click on just anything. While these sites may look legitimate, they can contain programs that attempt to take your contact information and share it. 5. Stay alert and cautious. Be vigilant about who you communicate with online and how you verify their identity. Be extra cautious when people online ask you to do something. Never click on suspicious links, and never share personal or financial information unless you can absolutely trust the person on the other end and verify that they are who they say they are. Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely. Obeying this law will save lives! Violating it can result in a $2,000 fine and three demerit points.

HELP SAVE LIVES. MOVE OVER.

RABIES R

abies is a dangerous virus that can be deadly to both humans and animals. The rabies virus is most commonly found in the saliva of infected animals. In most cases, the virus is transmitted to humans through a bite from an animal which is already infected by the virus. Although rare, it is possible for rabies to be transmitted when infected saliva enters through broken skin. This could occur if an infected animal were to lick an open wound. In North America, wild animals such as foxes, bats, coyotes, racoons and skunks are most likely to transmit the rabies virus to humans. Pets and farm animals such as dogs, cats and horses may also transmit the virus. The symptoms of rabies vary from person to person. However, the first symptoms of rabies may resemble that of a common flu virus. These symptoms generally last for a few days. As the

infection progresses, symptoms may include fever, vomiting, anxiety and headache. More serious symptoms such as confusion, difficulty swallowing, excessive salivation and paralysis may develop at the later stages of infection. One thing to keep in mind is that once a person begins to show signs and symptoms of the infection, the risk of death is significantly higher. Therefore, it is important to seek medical attention if you have been bitten by any animal, especially if the animal is suspected to have rabies. After taking a detailed medical history and performing a physical examination, your doctor will be able to decide if treatment is necessary. The bad news is that once a rabies infection has established itself in the body, the disease is usually fatal. As a result, if your doctor thinks that you have been exposed to a virus, you will be administered a series of injections to

prevent the virus from infecting you. The first shot will be a fast-acting medication that will prevent the infection from taking hold in your body. Next you will be giving four shots over the next two weeks which contain a vaccine to help your body fight the rabies infection. If at all possible, Dr Christopher H. Singh it is a good idea to Chiropractor, runs Trans test the animal that Canada Chiropractic at 230 bit you to determine Truck Stop in Woodstock, if it is infected with Ont. He can be reached rabies. This will help at 519-421-2024 E.mail: avoid unnecessary chris_singh@sympatico.ca treatment. However, in the case of wild animals this may not be possible. There are a few simple things you can do to minimize your risk coming in contact with the rabies virus. First of all, household pets such as dogs and cats may be vaccinated. To add to this, keeping a close eye on your pets when they are outdoors will reduce the chances of contact with wild animals that may be infected. Finally avoid physical contact with wild animals and report any stray animals to local authorities. It may also be wise to consider getting a rabies vaccine if you are travelling to other parts of the world where rabies is more prevalent. If in doubt, ask your doctor for advice. As you can see, although rare, rabies can lead to a serious or even fatal medical condition. Please keep in mind these simple prevention tips and you will greatly reduce your risk. Until next month, drive safely. RT
