The Conference Board of Canada estimates that self-driving cars could be on the roads by 202025 and economic benefits for Canada could total over $65 billion per year. Jobs and trades will change as direct and indirect employment displacement may occur in transport, truck and courier services, taxi and bus drivers, auto insurance, driving instructors and parking attendance. On the positive side, there will be new business opportunities for the auto and technological industries related to the design and manufacture of sensors, software, etc. for AVs. While transit and transportation industries will be directly affected, AV roll out will also impact any business involved in freight or passenger transportation: car-sharing, carrental companies, insurance companies, retail and commercial building management (who provide large parking spaces). Check out our special report inside this edition. Road Today is pleased to support the upcoming Women with Drive Leadership Summit being held by Trucking HR Canada on March 5th in Toronto. This will be a landmark event for everyone who recruits, retains or mentors women in Canada’s trucking industry. The 7th Annual Road Today Truck Show will be organized in Brampton on May 23rd and 24th. Like previous years, there will be plenty of activities including trade show, job fair, kids & family entertainment and lots more. Stay tuned and connected! Please drive safe as per weather conditions. Always remember; someone home is waiting for you. Manan Gupta Editor

hanks for your continued patronage to our award-winning magazine for Canada’s multicultural trucking industry! Inside you will find the latest developments and updates related to the trucking industry plus all regular features like Trucking Quotient Quiz, Road Safety Tips, Entertainment, Health Column, Kids Corner, and much more. The Government of Canada has recently announced $268,000 to support the Manitoba Trucking Association to provide drivers and company managers with on-line and in-person skills training and knowledge transfer as well as technology demonstrations geared to encourage the adoption of the latest transportation technologies such as digital driver logs and logistics software. While welcoming this financial support, we look forward to hear similar initiatives and investment for other parts of the country as well. Ontario is introducing bilingual, fullcolour electronic highway signs that include images to help keep drivers safe and manage traffic conditions. The use of colour, along with internationally-recognized images and symbols, with less text on the new signs will allow drivers to easily see important road safety information and react to traffic conditions or choose alternate routes. We welcome this step aimed at helping all drivers easily understand road conditions and safety messages. Automated vehicles (AVs), already on the road in some form, will continue to rapidly enter the on-ramps, highways and Canadian roadways, packed with time-saving benefits and reducing road collisions. OTA Hosting Carrier Session to Discuss Toronto Downtown Delivery Plan

T

he Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) over the past month has been engaged in ongoing discussions with the City of Toronto regarding downtown deliveries. The current public focus is on the courier sector; however, it is very clear that the City of Toronto wants to develop a freight delivery plan for all commercial vehicles serving all sectors of the downtown economy – waste vehicles, straight trucks, dry vans, refers amongst a host of others. OTA will be working with its members and other stakeholders over 2015 to develop a freight delivery plan for the City of Toronto that reflects the needs of all of its members, the demands of the supply chain and the political realties within the City of Toronto. This will not be an easy task, but with members’ input we can create a vision for the downtown core which our various membership sectors may be able to support.

To start this process, OTA will be hosting a meeting on Wednesday March 4 from 10 am – 2pm. Throughout the morning OTA staff will walk carriers through the various options and will be seeking guidance and volunteers to assist in the development of a study plan for freight delivery in the City of Toronto. This meeting will be an opportunity for carriers to plug themselves into the process, with a final goal towards providing the City of Toronto with concrete guidance in the development of a freight delivery plan. Following lunch, and time permitting, OTA will also provide members in attendance with a briefing on off-peak delivery options during the Pan-Am Games; congestion information available during the Pan-Am games; roundabouts and municipal truck routes. To attend the March 4 meeting at OTA’s offices please e-mail Jonathan Blackham at jonathan.blackham@ontruck.org RT

I

n an effort to simplify service needs for customers in the highly demanding concrete pumper application, Mack Trucks now offers specialized Uptime support. Mack GuardDog Connect, its integrated telematics solution, will be standard on Mack TerraPro concrete pumper models ordered as of April, making it the first such proactive support service available in the trucking industry for pumper applications. Included in Mack’s concrete pumper solution is specialized body builder support, also unique to the industry. Designed to maximize uptime by streamlining service needs, Mack’s concrete pumper support combines the expertise of Mack OneCall, Mack’s 24/7 customer support service agents, and technical and dealership experts with specialized body builder knowledge. The result is a simplified network of focused customer support, minimizing potential customer downtime. Mack GuardDog Connect has been standard on the Mack Pinnacle, Mack Granite and Titan by Mack models since

2013. GuardDog Connect is Mack’s proactive diagnostic and repair planning system. It monitors fault codes that could potentially shut down a truck or lead to an unplanned visit to the dealer. Combined with the support of the Mack OneCall agents, dealership personnel and tech and body builder support, Mack’s comprehensive concrete pumper support program is unmatched in the industry. Once an issue is detected, a case is automatically opened in Mack ASIST, Mack’s web-based fleet service management platform, the owner or fleet service manager is contacted and the repair planning process begins through a customer-chosen dealer. ASIST ensures timely information sharing, communication and tracking of a service event among the customer, dealer and support staff. Mack GuardDog Connect for TerraPro concrete pumpers will RT be available for order in April. .

Volvo Trucks Achieves Record Canadian Market Share in 2014

Volvo Trucks reached a company record share of 15.3 percent of the Canadian heavy-duty retail market in 2014, according to data compiled by the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association and IHS Automotive. Volvo also achieved a 12.4 percent market share for the combined U.S. and Canadian heavy-duty retail market, another all-time high for the company. The company attributed the high marks to customers’ continued positive response to Volvo’s fuel-efficient products and Uptime services.

V

olvo market share climbed 2.2 percentage points in Canada, with a retail volume of 4,510 vehicles compared with 3,652 in 2013. For the combined U.S. and Canadian market, Volvo achieved a retail volume of 31,065 vehicles versus 24,310 in 2013. Volvo’s U.S. retail share, recorded by WardsAuto Group, was 12 percent in 2014 (26,555 vehicles), compared with 11.2 percent in 2013 (20,658 vehicles). “This achievement is evidence of the market’s acceptance of our aerodynamic trucks, fuel-efficient powertrains and commitment to maximizing Uptime support for our customers,” said Gӧran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North American Sales and Marketing. “Continuing our focus on these customer needs, as well as driver productivity and safety, will well-position Volvo Trucks for the future as fleets continue to seek products that increase their return on investment.” Nyberg said the Volvo I-Shift automated manual transmission and XE – eXceptional Efficiency – powertrain packages were key drivers to the market share achievements. Volvo I-Shift penetration was a record 75 percent in 2014, and more than 28 percent of all trucks sold in 2014 featured an XE package. Volvo offers the XE powertrain package for its 11-liter D11, 13-liter D13 and 16-liter D16 engines.

10

february 2015

/roadtoday

XE packages improve fuel efficiency by lowering engine rpm at a given vehicle speed, a concept Volvo calls “downspeeding.” Made possible through the combination of I-Shift and a Volvo engine with modified software, XE allows the engine to cruise about 200 rpm less than the average truck sold today. Volvo’s focus on Uptime also was a key driver, Nyberg said. Volvo recently opened its new North American Uptime Center, bringing together key support employees and technology under one roof to help ensure that customers’ trucks keep moving. The Uptime Center is the home for Volvo Action Service (VAS) staff, Volvo’s 24/7 support experts, who receive alerts via Remote Diagnostics when monitored fault codes appear. Remote Diagnostics is Volvo’s telematics-based proactive diagnostic and repair planning system that monitors critical fault codes. Remote Diagnostics identifies what parts will be needed and provides technicians with straightforward repair instructions – even before the truck arrives for service. Remote Diagnostics can reduce the diagnostic time by up to 70 percent and lower repair time by more than 20 percent. Over 50,000 Volvo trucks are equipped with the system, which has been standard on all Volvo-powered models since 2013. RT

ROAD SAFETY

Ontario’s Bilingual Electronic Highway Signs Going Colour Province Keeping Drivers Safe and Reducing Congestion

O

12

february 2015

/roadtoday

Highways are crucial to the province’s economic prosperity and help keep people and businesses moving. The state-of-the-art, bilingual signs with images will help all drivers easily understand road conditions and safety messages. Ontario is taking the next step in keeping our roads safer.”

— Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation QUICK FACTS

ntario is introducing bilingual, fullcolour electronic highway signs that include images to help keep drivers safe and manage traffic conditions. The use of colour, along with internationally-recognized images and symbols, with less text on the new signs allows drivers to easily see important road safety information and react to traffic conditions or choose alternate routes. Twenty-one signs have already been introduced in southern Ontario, including on Highway 401 near Toronto and Pickering, and QEW near Niagara, Burlington and Mississauga, as well as seven signs in northeastern Ontario, on Highway 11 and Highway 17. Strengthening the province’s transportation network is part of the government’s economic plan for Ontario. The four-part plan is building Ontario up by investing in people’s talents and skills, building new public infrastructure like roads and transit, creating a dynamic, supportive environment where business thrives, and building a secure savings plan RT so everyone can afford to retire.

• The new bilingual signs in French designated areas meet the requirements of the French Language Services Act. • The signs are manufactured at Ledstar, an Ontario-based company located in Vaughan that employs 42 people. • In total, there are about 50 variable message signs that will gradually transition to the new sign type as they reach the end of their lifecycle.

Kenworth T880 Vocational Truck Named ATD Truck of the Year

T

he Kenworth T880 Vocational Truck with the PACCAR MX-13 engine has been named the 2015 Truck of the Year by the American Truck Dealers (ATD) at the annual ATD Convention and Expo in San Francisco, Calif. This year’s competition focused on the vocational and heavy haul/severe duty truck category. During the competition, a panel of judges conducted test drives and evaluated each truck entry in key categories, which included innovation, design, safety, driver ergonomics and comfort. “The Kenworth T880 establishes a new standard of excellence and builds upon Kenworth’s heritage of quality, innovation and technology to produce industry-leading, rugged and reliable vocational trucks,” said Preston Feight, Kenworth general manager. “This 2015 ATD Truck of the Year award reflects the many positive comments we have received from our customers about the T880’s outstanding performance, driver comfort and quiet cab.” Available in day cab and 52-inch sleeper configurations, the Kenworth T880 is for vocational customers who require a durable, reliable and productive truck for demanding dump,

Hours of Service Exemptions During the Winter Season

A

lthough drivers must be aware of and adhere to Hours of Service (HOS) regulations, sometimes adverse driving conditions can occur, particularly during the winter season when the weather can be unpredictable. If unexpected adverse driving conditions slow you down, you may exceed driving and on-duty times by no more than 2 hours. However, for the exemption to the HOS regulations to be valid, the conditions must not have been known to the driver or operator before the trip began. It must also have been possible to complete the trip under normal driving conditions within the times set out in the HOS regulations. Adverse driving conditions include highway closures due to a crash, roads covered with ice or snow, and bad weather conditions such as snow, sleet and fog. Adverse driving conditions do not include situations that are anticipated, such as congested traffic during regular rush hour periods. An exemption can also be made to the driving and on-duty times in the event of an emergency, where the driver must take immediate action to protect the safety of the vehicle, cargo, occupants or other road users. There is no limit for the amount of time it can take to get to safety, but the situation is no longer deemed an emergency when the danger has passed. An “emergency does not include situations such as a shortage of drivers, shippers’ demands or a driver wanting to get home! Planning ahead is particularly important during the winter months. Remember to look up weather and traffic conditions before you head out and plan your route accordingly. If you do have to use the exemption rule, be sure and record it in the remarks section of your daily log, along with explanation of the circumstances. RT

C

anada’s trucking industry faces an intensifying shortage of qualified workers. The average age of existing employees continues to rise, meaning that a large number of the newest recruits will be needed just to offset retirements. This is on top of the recruits who are needed to support growing business activities or simply to replace people who quit. But the trucking industry appears to be overlooking about half the population in the search for people. A mere 3% of today’s truck drivers, mechanics, technicians and cargo workers are women. Women also account for just 11% of industry managers, 13% of parts technicians, 18% of dispatchers, and 25% of freight claims/safety and loss prevention specialists. Clearly, they must play a role in any long-term recruiting and retention strategies. Trucking HR Canada is helping to address the underlying issues with the help of a national advisory group of women who already fill senior management and leadership roles. One of their first steps has been to develop the Women with Drive Leadership Summit, scheduled for March 5 at the Sheraton Toronto Airport Hotel and Conference Centre. The summit is not just for women. It is for any manager who wants to learn more about programs and solutions to support female workers, and for the industry leaders who want to develop a female-friendly work culture. And it is a packed agenda. Cristina Falcone of UPS Canada, Joanne Mackenzie of Trucking for a Cure, and Ellen Voie of the Women in Trucking Associations will speak about mentorship opportunities that help to eliminate barriers in the trucking industry. Since trucking is not the only industry to face this challenge, we are also hearing about efforts

/roadtoday

to increase the number of women in other jobs. These best practices will be shared by Michelle Branigan of Electricity Human Resources Canada, RCMP Inspector Marlene Bzdel, Judy Lynn Archer of Women Building Futures, and Debby Newman of Goldcorp. The Kee Human Resources Luncheon builds on that theme with a keynote presentation by Brenda Andress, commissioner of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. In the afternoon, those who attend the conference will have a chance to learn more about Trucking HR Canada’s Women with Drive project, or hone their own leadership skills with the help of Denise McLean, a senior leadership consultant. Some of the highest-ranking women in the trucking industry will then share their personal stories and insights. We will hear from Cynthia Clark of Sterling Western Star Trucks Alberta, Vicki McKibbon of Armour Transportation, and Vicki Stafford of Cavalier Transport. And it all wraps up with the Navistar Networking Reception to salute International Women’s Day. Don’t miss the event. Register today at www. TruckingHR.com.

uckle up and get ready for the next big thing. Automated vehicles (AVs), already on the road in some form, will continue to rapidly enter the on-ramps, highways and Canadian roadways, packed with time-saving benefits and reducing road collisions. A new study from The Conference Board of Canada, in collaboration with the Van Horne Institute and Canadian Automated Vehicles Centre of Excellence (CAVCOE), titled Automated Vehicles: The Coming of the Next Disruptive Technology, estimates that self-driving cars could be on the roads by 2020-25 and economic benefits for Canada could total over $65 billion per year. “The potential scope for impacts of automated vehicles on Canada is profound,” said Vijay Gill, Director of Policy Research, at The Conference Board of Canada. “Self-driving cars could free up driving time, significantly reduce the number of car accidents, minimize road congestion and reduce the amount of fuel that we consume. However, these new vehicles will pose some economic and social challenges including possible job-displacement and required

24

february 2015

employment retraining.” The impact of AVs is significant with total potential benefits for Canada estimated at $65 billion. The cumulative potential benefits from the abovementioned factors are summarized as follows: • Fewer collisions - $37.4 billion • Saving drivers’ time - $20 billion • Fuel cost savings - $2.6 billion • Reduced traffic congestion - $5 billion There will also be wider economic and technological effects including substantial changes in land values as AVs increase sprawl and urban intensification. There is a strong likelihood that people will be willing to tolerate longer commutes if they are able to be productive in the vehicle, especially if it means trading a longer commute for cheaper housing. Jobs and trades will change as direct and indirect employment displacement may occur in transport, truck and courier services, taxi and bus drivers, auto insurance, driving instructors and parking attendance. On the positive side, there will be new business opportunities for the auto and technological industries related to the design and manufacture of sensors,

software, etc. for AVs. While transit and transportation industries will be directly affected, AV roll out will also impact any business involved in freight or passenger transportation: carsharing, car-rental companies, insurance companies, retail and commercial building management (who provide large parking spaces). As automated vehicles (AVs) merge with traditional vehicles and increase their visibility on our roadways, motorists and government officials need to prepare to integrate AVs within our current infrastructure. Governments at all levels need to plan for the arrival of AVs. New laws and regulations need to be passed. Governments in Canada need to start thinking about the benefits of AVs and how best to take advantage of them. Governments will play a major role, not only in permitting and regulating AVs, but also in helping to improve the impact AVs may have on certain sectors and the public who rely on driving to earn a living. AV developers are focusing on making AVs that can exist with our current infrastructure, rather than relying on the development of new infrastructure

oem news roadtoday www.roadtoday.com

to accommodate them. AVs will force us to redefine our infrastructure needs and adapt our infrastructure investment to take full advantage of the AVs capability. Some current roads may be subdivided into AV and non-AV lanes simply by restriping them. Introducing more roundabouts may also prove to be more efficient than traffic signals. Traffic and road signage may be phased out and replaced by local transmitters that send data directly to the vehicles. The arrival of automated taxis and people who opt to send their vehicles home may reduce the need for parking lots and/or park-and-ride lots, however there may also be a need for increased charging points for vehicles run by electric power. Planning for AVs will be important for major infrastructure projects. All future transportation-related infrastructure projects need to include a detailed AV impact study. With many of the new AVs being powered by electricity, governments need to address how to meet the new demand for power. Private sector businesses like those involved in freight and passenger transportation, car-rental companies need to also stay informed. RT

Free software update provides compliance with the December 2014 rule suspension

VDO RoadLog ELD Software Updated to Accommodate Revision to FMCSA

34-hour Restart Rule

VDO RoadLog ELD now accommodates the temporary suspension of the 34-hour restart rule change of July 2013.

C

ontinental Commercial Vehicles & Aftermarket, a global supplier of systems and components to automobile and truck manufacturers, and a leader in Electronic Logging Device Technology, has released a free VDO RoadLog ELD software update to address the FMCSA’s decision to temporarily suspend the 34-hour restart rule revision instituted in July 2013. The update is available effective Monday, January 26, 2015. The software updates are free and automatically available online to registered VDO RoadLog owners. On December 16, 2014, President Obama signed a $1 trillion fiscal 2015 funding bill that included a suspension of the FMCSA’s requirement that drivers take off two consecutive periods of 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. during a 34-hour restart and that they take only one 34-hour restart in any 168-hour period. The suspension is in force until September of 2015. Drivers still are required to account for a 30-minute break during their shifts that was instituted by the July

28

february 2015

/roadtoday

2013 hours-of-service regulations. A final ruling on the status of the 34-hour restart revision is still being debated. When the final determination is made, Continental will again provide free software updates, if required, to accommodate the final rules. VDO RoadLog is a breakthrough in log automation and one of the first stand-alone ELDs offered in North America, providing an affordable, easy to use, plug and play solution for compliance reporting. RoadLog combines GPS data with input from the vehicle to create a digital log that the driver can either download or print out as needed. The VDO RoadLog brings innovation to logbook automation and fleet management with an expanded range of new products and services. The portfolio now offers online and mobile connectivity for both fleets and owner operators that will not only improve operational efficiency for drivers and fleet managers, but also make the workload easier and less stressful. $35M upgrade to Windsor Detroit tunnel complete

T

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens, MP for Essex and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport Jeff Watson, and MPP for Cambridge and Parliamentary Assistant to the Ontario Minister of Transportation Kathryn McGarry, mark the completion of improvements at the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Canadian Plaza in Windsor, Ontario.

he Governments of Canada and Ontario have announced the completion of improvements to the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel Canadian Plaza. This project was the final construction project remaining in the Let’s Get Windsor-Essex Moving (LGWEM) strategy announced in 2004. The improvements to the Canadian plaza of the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel were undertaken to accommodate current and future traffic volumes and promote the use of the NEXUS program while removing the tunnel queues from city streets. Upgrades include new vehicle access lanes, new buildings for the Canada Border Services Agency and tunnel maintenance, new inspection booths for truck and passenger vehicle processing, and a reconfiguration of the duty-free parking area, municipal parking lots and existing intersections. RT

Quick Facts

• Construction of the improvements to the Canadian plaza of the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel began in September 2012, following an environmental study and detail design. • This $35-million project is jointly funded by the Governments of Canada and Ontario under the Let’s Get Windsor-Essex Moving (LGWEM) strategy, a $300-million commitment for several transportation infrastructure projects to improve efficiency and reduce congestion in Windsor and Essex County. Funding for this strategy comes from the Canada-Ontario Border Infrastructure Fund.

Take Control of Your Time and Make More Money!

I

Bruce Outridge is an entrepreneur with over 30 years experience in the transportation industry from driver to consultant. He is the author of the books Driven to Drive and Running by the Mile and offers training and consulting through his consulting business. For more information please visit his website at

www.outridgeenteerprises.ca

am sure you have heard the expression, “Time is Money!” There has been nothing truer than that statement in life. Time is the one factor that links everything we do together in our life. It links how long we work, how much time we spend with family, how we are paid, and how much recreational time we have. It links everything and most people don’t give it a second thought as to how it is affecting their lives. Yet we all want to make more at our jobs and have more quality time for ourselves. For many the way to make more money at their jobs is to work longer with overtime, or in the case of the truck driver to run more miles. If you understand how time works however you realize you will never be able to sustain that momentum for very long and you may earn more money, but you will lose your time along with it. So how do you make more money with less time? That is the magical question that all are trying to find out. You already know how many hours you work per week and we certainly are not looking to increase those working hours, we just want to work smarter. So how do we increase the amount we make while using the same amount of hours? A few ways to do this is by increasing your efficiency, delegating your workload, getting a raise, or having a product or service that can work for you on the off hours. For most of us these are the areas that will help us make more money. Now I am not suggesting you will get rich from these ideas but if they can bump your pay up by a little bit for each hour you will be doing good. Let’s look at the easiest ideas first. Can you increase your efficiency for your job so that you have more time for yourself, that is the same as giving yourself a raise? Increasing your efficiency is the easiest way to increase your pay especially as a driver. That starts with good trip planning. How about delegating some of your work? For owner operators, if you feel your per hour rate is $50 per

hour, should you be spending time doing your bookkeeping when someone else can be handling that for you at $30 per hour. Let them handle that duty and you try and get more miles where you are making a higher wage. Another way to increase your wage is to plain ask for a raise. Good luck with this one, but if you have been a good employee and it has been a while since you had a raise in the past then it may work. As for drivers, most likely won’t

see a raise unless the company bumps up the wage for everyone, however specializing in a certain area such as hazardous material or flatbed, or getting a dedicated run is the same as getting a raise and is very possible at any time. The final way to increase your income through time is to create a product, a service, or invest in something that doesn’t require your time but will bring in a return. Be very careful about this as it brings in all kinds of areas where you can lose money as quickly as earning it. The fact is that there are many ways to increase income, maybe you have a hobby that you can sell product through as a side business. The first step to taking control of your time is to seriously look at where it has been wasted. Figure out where you can best increase your profits within your realm of opportunity and you will see your income grow. Remember every penny helps. @roadtoday

LEAVE A LANE. IT ' S THE LAW.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel are often required to do their work on the shoulders of busy highways. For safety reasons, the law requires all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated. If the highway has more than one lane, the law also requires all drivers to move over leaving at least one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle, if it can be done safely.

Government of Canada Supports Greater Efficiency in Trucking Industry Across the West Training for Drivers and Managers Will Address Skills Development and Knowledge Transfer

G

overnment of Canada has announced $268,000 to support the Manitoba Trucking Association to provide western Canadian truck drivers and managers with skills training and technology demonstrations. This investment, through the Western Diversification Program, will provide drivers and company managers with on-line and in-person skills training and knowledge transfer as well as technology demonstrations geared to encourage the adoption of the latest transportation technologies such as digital driver logs and logistics software. A web training portal will be established to house the training material and provide convenient access to drivers while “on the road” to enhance participation. The Manitoba Trucking Association will develop the training materials in collaboration with their sister organizations in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. Through this project, the trucking industry will move to a more unified and effective approach to training across the West and will see greater adoption of technology to improve productivity. RT

DRIVE WITH CAUTION FUTURE AHEAD

Male factor

A boy, frustrated with all the rules he had to follow, asked his father, “Dad, how soon will I be old enough to do as I please?” The father answered immediately, “I just don’t know, son. No male, has ever lived that long yet.”

Bad boy

Son: “Mom, What’s a girlfriend?” Mom: “If you’re a good boy, you’ll get one when you’re older.” Son: “What if I’m not a good boy?” Mom: “You’ll get many.”

The scales

Two children went into their parent’s bathroom and noticed the scales in the corner. “Whatever you do,” cautioned one child to the younger one, “don’t step on it!” “Why not?” asked the sibling. “Because every time mom does, she lets out an awful scream!”

In a spot

The old gent was backing his Rolls into the last available parking space when a zippy red sports car whipped in behind him to take the spot. The young driver jumped out and said: “Sorry Pops, but you’ve got to be young and smart to do that.” The old man ignored the remark and kept reversing until the Rolls had crunched the sports car into a crumpled heap. “Sorry son, you’ve got to be old and rich to do that!”

Restless Leg Syndrome

F

or this month’s topic I have decided to talk about an interesting condition called restless leg syndrome (RLS). Have you ever been lying in your bunk at night trying to fall asleep and you suddenly feel the urge to move your legs continuously. If you answered “yes” than this article may apply to you. Let’s get started. RLS is a neurological condition that is characterized by the irresistible urge to move the legs while you are sitting or lying down. According to scientific studies there does not seem to be a specific demographic of people that RLS affects. RLS affects both sexes, can begin at any age and may worsen as you get older. The symptoms of RLS are very wide ranging. People typically describe symptoms as an unpleasant sensation in their calves, thighs and feet. Commonly, patients describe the feeling as tingling, burning, aching, crawling and/or creeping. In some cases, the patients are unable to describe the feeling however, they usually do not describe the condition as a muscle cramp or numbness. Although it is often difficult to describe this condition, there are a few characteristic signs and symptoms. Firstly, the sensations usually begin during inactivity when you are lying down or sitting for an extended period of time. In addition, the sensations of RLS are relieved by movements such as

stretching, walking, and jiggling the legs. It is this desire to move that gives RLS its name. Another common characteristic is that the symptoms seem to worsen in the evening. As a result, many people with RLS find it difficult to fall asleep or to stay asleep. The exact cause of RLS is still unknown. However, researchers suspect the conditions may be due to an imbalance of the brain chemical dopamine. This is the chemical that sends the messages to control muscle movements. There seems to be a hereditary component to this condition as researches have identified sites on the chromosomes where genes for RLS may be present. To add to this, stress and pregnancy tend to worsen the symptoms of RLS. This is probably due to the changes in hormones that occur as a result of these two conditions. Many people with RLS never seek medical help because they worry that they will not be able to describe the symptoms accurately. Although there is no blood or lab test specifically for diagnosing RLS, your doctor my order one or both of these tests to rule out other possible conditions. Your doctor may also order a muscle or nerve study. If all of your tests come back clear, your doctor may refer you to a sleep specialist for more testing. At the sleep clinic, doctors will be able to observe your sleep habits closely and check for leg

movements during sleep. In some cases of RLS, treating an underlying condition, such as iron deficiency or peripheral neuropathy, can greatly relieve the symptoms. However, if you have RLS without any associated condition, treatment focuses on lifestyle changes, and, if those are not effective, medications. Lifestyle factors such as good sleep patterns, exercise and stress reduction are often very effective in the treatment of RLS. In addition, patients with RLS should avoid things such as caffeine, alcohol and tobacco as these chemicals seem to increase or aggravate the symptoms of RLS. There are several prescription medication that are use to treat RLS, most of which were developed to treat other conditions. Your doctor may prescribe medications for Parkinson’s disease as these drugs reduce the amount of motion in your legs by affecting the level of the chemical messenger dopamine in the brain. Other medications such as muscle relaxants and sleep medications are also very common. It usually takes a bit of trial and error for your doctor to find the correct combination of medications and dosage that is right for you. Although RLS is a fairly rare condition, professional truck drivers, due to their lifestyles on the road, are at greater risk of developing it. Thus, if you do have any of the above mentioned symptoms it is important to see your doctor as soon as possible. Until next month, drive safely! RT
